The Uganda Senior National Team, Uganda Cranes, held their final training session this evening at the Obedi Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown, Botswana.
The team arrived earlier in the day at PG Matante International Airport and immediately settled into their pre-match routine as preparations intensify ahead of the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Botswana.
Uganda Cranes has safely landed at PG Matante International Airport in Francistown, Botswana.
This evening’s session, conducted under floodlights at 7:00 p.m. EAT, allowed Head Coach Paul Put and his technical team to fine-tune tactics and assess player readiness. The Cranes will be aiming to secure vital points in their quest for a historic World Cup qualification.
The Uganda U17 National Team has begun preparations for the FIFA U17 World Cup Qatar 2025 with great optimism and determination. Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo expressed his excitement as the players regrouped for their first training session since returning from the AFCON U17 Finals in Morocco.
‘After a long time since we came back from Morocco, we are excited to see the boys back with us preparing for the World Cup,’ said Coach Ssenyondo. ‘We are going to the world’s biggest stage. We know it will be tough, but we are not less than that; we are also tougher.’
He emphasised that the main objective is to advance from the group stage. ‘Before we stepped out for training, I told the boys that our first target is to come out of the group stage and then take it game by game. That is our main target; we do not want to put ourselves under too much pressure,’ he stated.
Coach Ssenyondo believes that progressing beyond the group will open further opportunities for the team. ‘If we get out of the group, anything is possible because the other games are knockout. It is a historical moment for all of us, for the federation and for Uganda, but especially for the players and the coaches,’ he said.
He further encouraged the young players to use this opportunity to demonstrate their potential. ‘I would want the players, and I believe the federation as well, to see them explore their talent to great heights. Many have the potential to progress to the U20 and senior national teams,’ he remarked.
In a personal reflection, Ssenyondo confirmed that this tournament will be his final assignment as Head Coach of the U17 team. He explained that this decision was reached following discussions with FUFA leadership.
‘Before we even qualified, I had a personal discussion with the FUFA President in Morocco. I told him that I believed we would qualify, but after the World Cup I would wish to step down from my position because this would be the apex,’ he shared. ‘After qualification, I formally wrote to FUFA to appreciate them for the opportunity, and they agreed with my decision. They saw it as the right step for me to move on to other national categories.’
He added, ‘I am an ambitious young man. I want to hit the heights of the game as a coach. I am very excited that I am stepping out of this position having done my best for Uganda and for myself. After my last game at the World Cup, that will mark the end of my tenure as head coach. I will move with my head held high, knowing that we did our best to achieve our dreams.’

The Uganda Cranes are on a quest to make history as the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers enter their final stretch. With a spot in the world’s premier football tournament within reach, the team is fully focused on securing qualification.
At the heart of the defense is Jordan Obita, a skilled defender with a dream of representing Uganda on the global stage. Currently second in the group, the Cranes need to capitalize on their remaining fixtures, with Algeria leading the table.
The collective ambition to reach the World Cup is palpable, fueling the players’ motivation and team spirit. Obita, who formed a solid partnership with Elio Capraddosi, played a key role in the team’s back to back wins with clean sheets against Mozambique and Somalia last September, keeping Uganda’s qualification hopes alive.
The soft spoken defender, who plays for Hibernian FC in Scotland, shared his insights with FUFA Communications.
Who is Jordan Obita?
I am Jordan Obita. I was raised in Oxford, England and grew up playing football. I joined the Reading Academy at eight and spent 18 years there, making my professional debut at 16 and becoming a regular first-team player by 18. Football has always been my passion as my dad taught me from the age of four, and it is all I have ever dreamed of. Being a professional footballer was not just a goal; it was my only aspiration.
Obita on his first Visit to Uganda
My first time in Uganda was incredible. I was excited to visit my dad’s homeland, and it exceeded my expectations. The country is beautiful and the people are incredibly welcoming. I flew into Entebbe and was struck by the vibrant atmosphere in Kampala. I am eager to return and share this experience with my family, my wife and three young children would love it here.
Warm welcome by teammates
Obita expressed appreciation for the welcoming nature of the players on the team noting that they speak good English which facilitates communication. However, he harbours a personal interest in learning Luganda, a local language, to connect more deeply with the culture and surprise his teammates. I would love to learn some Luganda, though it would be fun to surprise my teammates. My family is from Gulu and while I know a few words of Acholi, learning Luganda would be a great way to connect with the culture.
On the world cup qualification prospect
Our chances for World Cup qualification are high. We are second in the group and if we win both our remaining games, we could potentially take first place. We need to stay positive and focused.
Our team is striving to achieve the best we can, and with no fears, we are in a good position. Playing in the World Cup is every player’s dream and I am hopeful we can make it happen.
Obita on the AFCON 2027 Outlook
Expressing strong anticipation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 in Morocco, the soft spoken defender emphasised the potential to surprise many with their performance whilst acknowledging the difficulty of the group which includes strong teams like Nigeria, Tunisia and neighbouring Tanzania.
Despite the challenges, there is a hopeful tone about qualifying from the group and delivering a memorable experience for Ugandan fans, fulfilling long held aspirations.
I am looking forward to the AFCON 2025 games and the tournament. I really think that we can surprise a lot of people. Our group is going to be tough. But, you know, football is never easy. So, it is very nice that we can be playing top teams such as Nigeria, Tunisia and also our neighbours, Tanzania. I am looking forward to it. I hope we can do really well and qualify out of the group. It would be amasing for our country. I hope that we can give the fans everything that they have been dreaming of for a very long time.
Obita on Opportunities for players and challenges in African Football
Obita reflected on the technical capabilities observed in the Uganda Cranes squad, specifically referencing on the squads from the friendlies played in Morocco and the most recent World Cup qualifiers.
He noted that technical skill is prevalent among African players, but the primary challenge lies in access to scouting and opportunities to join European or UK teams.
I have seen some fantastic technical skill in the Uganda Cranes squad. The challenge for African players is getting scouted and joining European or UK teams. In the UK, opportunities come quickly, but in Africa, it is a lot more difficult. Players have to work harder to get noticed.
On his defensive partnership with Elio Capraddosi
Elio and I played together in Morocco, so we have a great understanding. We are both experienced players who love defending and are very organised. Our communication is excellent and we work well together. We have had some great results recently, and I am looking forward to continuing our partnership.
Thank you to Ugandans for the support
He went on to express deep gratitude to Ugandans for their continuous support and encouragement urging them to keep showing up in large numbers and maintain their belief in the team.
To all Ugandans, thank you for your support. Keep coming to the games and believing in us. We will do our best to put on a good performance and make you proud. I look forward to seeing you at every game.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has appointed former Ghanaian international, Mr Laryea Kingston, as the full-time coach in charge of Uganda’s youth men national teams. The unveiling took place during a press conference at FUFA House, where the Federation’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Edgar Watson, highlighted the move as a major step towards strengthening Uganda’s junior national teams through year-round preparation and talent development.
In his opening remarks, Mr Watson expressed appreciation to the media and stakeholders for their continued support and outlined the long-standing challenges that have affected the growth of youth football in Uganda. He noted that junior national teams have historically only assembled when competitions were imminent, leaving limited time for proper preparation and player development.
‘We have had situations where the identification of players at underage levels happens only when a tournament is around the corner,’ said Mr Watson. ‘This has not only limited exposure for young players but has also created gaps in consistency and development. FUFA has therefore developed a Technical Master Plan, particularly focusing on youth football, to address these concerns.’
Mr Watson explained that the Federation has already established a national scouting platform aimed at identifying and tracking young talent across the country, including from upcountry regions that are often overlooked. The initiative is part of FUFA’s broader strategy to ensure continuous preparation of national youth teams and equitable talent discovery.
He added that the appointment of Mr Kingston follows a deliberate effort to bring on board a full-time coach who will dedicate himself to building Uganda’s under-15, under-17, and under-20 national teams throughout the year. ‘We have been categoric in selecting a coach who is neutral, experienced in both African and international football, and capable of identifying and nurturing young talent,’ he noted.
Mr Watson described Mr Kingston as an ideal fit for the role, highlighting his extensive experience both as a player and as a coach. A former Ghana international, Kingston represented his country at the under-15, under-17, under-20, and senior levels, and also featured for clubs in Europe, including in Scotland. He holds a UEFA A and CAF B coaching licence and has previously worked with Ghana’s under-17 national team and the Right to Play Academy.
‘The coach will work closely with the FUFA Development Director, Mr Bashir Mutyaba, and the Technical Department to ensure that our youth teams are continuously scouted, trained, and ready for national duty,’ added Mr Watson. ‘He will be a resident coach working full-time over a two-year contract, with the main goal of producing competitive and well-prepared youth teams.’
Mr Watson also confirmed that the Uganda under-17 national team, which qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals, will continue to be managed by Coach Brian Senyondo during this assignment. He praised Mr Senyondo’s contribution and noted that this would be his final engagement with the under-17 side, after which he would be available for other coaching roles within FUFA’s structures.
Taking the podium, Mr Kingston expressed his gratitude to FUFA for the trust placed in him and reflected on his past encounters with Ugandan football. ‘I still remember vividly playing against Uganda during the 2006 World Cup qualifiers in Accra,’ he said. ‘It was one of the toughest matches for us, and since then, I have always had great respect for Ugandan football.’
He also shared fond memories of his playing days alongside former Uganda Cranes star David Obua in Scotland, describing him as a close friend and a player who helped him appreciate Uganda’s football culture.
Mr Kingston spoke passionately about his motivation to become a coach, emphasising his desire to give back to the game that transformed his life. ‘Football took me off the streets and gave me a future. That is why I decided to dedicate my life to helping young players achieve their dreams. My mission in Uganda is to educate, mentor, and empower these young athletes to become better players and responsible citizens,’ he stated.
He pledged to prioritise grassroots engagement and collaboration with local clubs, academies, and community structures to identify and nurture young talent. ‘We will focus on developing not only technical skills but also discipline, teamwork, and mental strength,’ he explained. ‘Together, with the support of the federation, coaches, and the community, we can create a strong foundation for the future of Ugandan football.’
Mr Kingston concluded his remarks by expressing optimism and commitment to the task ahead. ‘It is a great honour to be part of Uganda’s football journey. I invite everyone to join hands as we work towards building youth teams that will represent the country with pride on the international stage.’
FUFA has urged the media, football fans, and the public to rally behind the new coach and support the broader youth football development programme. Mr Watson reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to implementing the Technical Master Plan to ensure sustainable growth and competitiveness in all junior national teams.
Uganda Cranes’ experienced goalkeeper Denis Masinde Onyango has shared his insights on what the team must do to overcome Botswana ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Uganda face Botswana on Thursday, 9th October at Francistown Stadium before travelling to Algiers to play Algeria on Tuesday, 14th October, in matches that could shape their qualification hopes in Group G. The Cranes currently trail group leaders Algeria by four points.
Onyango is confident but realistic
‘The first motivation is we kept two clean sheets and won two of our previous games in Kampala against Mozambique and Somalia,’ Onyango said.
‘Also, me, Aucho and Jamal were part of the team that got maximum points against Botswana the last time we visited here in the AFCON Qualifiers about eight years ago, so I believe there is a big possibility to get positive results. We know they are not an easy opponent — they’ve got results at home and play well — but we have to be ready to fight for results.’
What Cranes must do to win
Onyango was clear on what Uganda must improve to secure victory in Francistown.
‘All teams from the Southern region play a similar style — quick in transition, good on the ball and strong on set pieces. They have good ball players, so we have to look after the ball and also be aware in set pieces such that we don’t concede as we press to score,’ he noted.
The Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper emphasised discipline and concentration as key, adding that the Cranes’ defensive organisation and composure in attack will make the difference in Botswana.
With the top spot still within reach, Uganda must collect maximum points in both fixtures to keep their World Cup dream alive, a mission being driven by Onyango’s leadership and experience.
Uganda Cranes skipper Khalid Aucho, England-based defender Toby Sibbick, and striker Steven Mukwala have voiced optimism and determination ahead of the team’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying double-header against Botswana and Algeria.
The two matches will define Uganda’s fate in Group G, where they currently trail leaders Algeria by four points. Uganda plays against Botswana on Thursday, 9th October at the Francistown Stadium before travelling to face Algeria on Tuesday, 14th October at the Hocine Aït Ahmed Stadium in Algiers.
With the top spot still within reach, Uganda must collect maximum points to stay in contention for a first-ever World Cup appearance.
Aucho Confident and Motivated
Captain Khalid Aucho expressed confidence in the team’s preparations and mentality, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a winning spirit.
‘These two games are very exciting and important for the nation because we have a chance to qualify for the World Cup or at least the playoffs,’ Aucho said.
‘It is good to be with a winning mentality and I am happy to be here. The lads are fine and ready for the task ahead. I scored the last time we were here, and that motivates me to push my teammates for maximum points. We thank our fans for the support and promise them maximum points.’
Aucho, who plies his trade with Singida Black Stars in Tanzania, will once again anchor the midfield as Uganda chase vital victories.
Sibbick: ‘We Have to Keep Believing’
Defender Toby Sibbick, who features for Burton Albion in England, highlighted the significance of the fixtures in keeping Uganda’s qualification hopes alive and building momentum ahead of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
‘It’s a good experience and we know we have to win both games to put us in the best possible position for the World Cup qualifiers—and who knows, we can still win the group,’ Sibbick noted.
‘We have to keep believing, and if we win the two games, it will also be good motivation for the AFCON tournament in Morocco.’
Sibbick added that his experience playing against top African and European talents gives him confidence to contribute effectively to the team’s ambitions.
‘I want to play the next two games and as a team, we want to win them. We believe in ourselves. We have played big teams before and have faith we can win against Botswana and Algeria. I’m grateful for the support from Uganda and my club, Burton Albion.’
Mukwala: ‘Motivated to Deliver for My Country’
Tanzania-based forward Steven Mukwala, who plays for Simba SC, echoed similar sentiments, expressing pride and hunger to perform for the national team.
‘It is always a pleasure to represent my country and I am much motivated,’ Mukwala said.
‘We have been having games, so I believe with my experience and fitness, I will add up to the team and I am glad to be here as well.’
Mukwala’s form at club level, combined with his pace and goal-scoring instincts, will be vital as Uganda look to break down Botswana and Algeria’s defenses.
Victories in both fixtures would keep the Cranes’ dream alive, a dream the players, led by Aucho, Sibbick and Mukwala, are determined to turn into reality.
It is full house in Uganda Cranes camp at the Avani Resort Hotel in Botswana’s Capital Gaborone following the arrival of forwards Rogers Mato and Travis Mutyaba on Tuesday evening.
Mato who has been in fine form for his club, FK Vardar in North Macedonia will be a key figure for coach Paul Put.
The winger currently leads the scoring chart in North Macedonia with eight goals and was also on the scoresheet in the last international window, bagging a brace in Uganda’s 4-0 home win over Mozambique.
Mutyaba on the other hand is settling in well at his new club, CS Sfaxien in Tunisia.
The camp therefore has all the 26 players that were summoned by coach Paul Put last week to prepare for the final two FIFA World Cup qualifier games against Botswana and Algeria.
Uganda will face Botswana on Thursday, 9th October 2025 in Francistown and end the campaign away to Algeria on Tuesday, 14th October 2025.
The contingent is expected to travel by air from Gaborone to Francistown on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the game against the Zebras.
Uganda Currently occupies second place in Group G on 15 points, four behind leaders Algeria. The group also has Mozambique, Botswana, Somalia and Guinea.

“I am happy to join the rest of the players here in Botswana and I found the camp happy and everyone is ready for the games ahead of us. These two games are very crucial in determining our if we will be at the World Cup, so we will treat them with maximum focus and make sure we come out victorious.” He said.
In Uganda’s last visit to Botswana in 2016, Uganda managed to get a 2-1 win courtesy of goals from William Kizito Luwagga and Aucho.
Aucho is ready to replicate what he did in 2016 and indicates this motivates and encourages him that Uganda is capable to pick all three points.

he 2025/2026 Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League officially returned on Friday 3 October 2025. The opening weekend produced goals galore, with victories for She Maroons FC and 2021/2022 champions She Corporate FC. Record champions Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC, defending champions Kampala Queens FC and debutants St Noa Girls Zana FC, Amus College WFC, Rines SS WFC and Makerere University WFC all settled for stalemates.
Here is a full roundup of the opening match week:
Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC 1–1 Kampala Queens FC
Kampala Queens FC began their title defence with a 1–1 draw against the Warriors on Friday at Kawempe Muslim SS Ground. The Queens looked blunt in midfield following the departure of last season’s MVP Shamira Nalugya, but salvaged a point when winger Kamiyat Naigaga capitalised on a goalmouth melee to tap home in the 58th minute. This cancelled out versatile Asia Nakibuuka’s strike on her second debut, as the defender-turned-forward rose above defenders to head past debutant Kaidu Sharon four minutes before half-time.
The Queens were second best on the day and will hope their new arrivals settle quickly as they look to build on last season’s impressive form. The Warriors showed flashes of brilliance throughout but their limited bench options could prove a challenge in adapting to different game moments.

She Corporate FC 4–1 Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga WFC
The Sharks made a flying start to the season with a 4–1 win over the Lubaga-based side at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru on Saturday morning.
Under new head coach Inanahazwe Balyse, She Corporate had five debutants – Lukiya Namubiru, Alima Nambafu, Adrine Birungi, Sandra Kisakye and Gillian Akandinda. The new arrivals have blended seamlessly into the line-up, giving the team a fresh look. Their impact was evident in a statement win, with Sandra Kisakye scoring once and assisting lethal striker Jesca Namanda, who bagged a brace. Rebecca Nakato added the other goal, while Nusulah Nakintu scored the visitors’ consolation.
The Sharks’ convincing win sends a strong message that they could be a team on a mission this season. With experience and depth in the squad, they will be one to watch.

Amus College WFC 1–1 St Noa Girls Zana FC
Under the stewardship of Tonny Mawejje, league debutants St Noa Girls Zana FC thought they had secured victory, but a late Shayline Opisa strike in stoppage time cancelled out Esther Babirye’s first-half goal, earning Amus a 1–1 draw on Saturday evening at Amus College Stadium.
Picking up a point on the road shows that the visitors are not here merely to make up the numbers. They came close to taking all three points in their first league match. For Amus College WFC, the draw is a fair result but it is clear they need more attacking options to complement Opisa’s brilliance if they are to mount a serious challenge this season.

Asubo Ladies FC 0–5 She Maroons FC
She Maroons FC made a bold statement with a resounding 5–0 victory, welcoming Asubo Ladies FC to the league in tough fashion.
It was a dominant display that showcased the Jailers’ strength and firepower. Norah Alupo led the charge with a brace, while debutant Lillian Mutuuzo and Lillian Kasuubo each scored once. Kiiza Immaculate added the icing on the cake to secure a comfortable win on the road.
With new head coach Maxwell Okello at the helm, captain Norah Alupo and Kasuubo in attack and debutant Mutuuzo showing promise, the Jailers possess a strong forward line that could drive their ambitions this season.

Makerere University WFC 1–1 Rines SS WFC
Both teams earned a point in their opening match at the Makerere University Ground on Sunday. Phiona Arach was a constant threat for the visitors and was eventually rewarded when her powerful shot slipped through the goalkeeper’s hands to give Rines SS WFC the lead in the 60th minute. However, Nakasaato Rebecca denied them victory with a header five minutes from time.
Both teams will take positives from the match and hope to build momentum ahead of Matchday Two.

Lady Doves FC 0–0 Olila High School WFC
In the only goalless game of the weekend, the visitors will be delighted with a point and a clean sheet at Katusabe Ground given their poor away record.
For the Believers, the result raises questions about their attacking strength, with much of the burden falling on last season’s top scorer Resty Kobusoboozi. They will need to regroup quickly and find new ways to break down defensively solid opponents.

Coach Ayub Khalifa believes the addition of striker Latifa Nakasi has boosted the team’s attacking options and that they are ready to collect maximum points against the Queens.
‘Our scoring rate was low last season. We only depended on Agnes Nabukenya for goals. We decided to go for Latifa Nakasi and we are a better team now. We want to win all 22 games while playing entertaining football for the fans,’ said Ayub Khalifa, Head Coach of Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC.
Defenders Amina Nakato and Asia Nakibuuka have also signed for the Warriors to fill the void left by Jolly Kobusingye, who joined rivals Kampala Queens FC.
On the other hand, Kampala Queens FC have lost several key players including reigning Player of the Year Zainah Nandede, who joined Simba Queens in Tanzania, and Shamira Nalugya, last season’s Most Valuable Player, who signed for FC Minsk in Belarus. The Queens will also be without goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro, who kept 16 clean sheets last season.
However, Kampala Queens FC Assistant Coach Sharon Kizza is unfazed by the departures, stating that they have recruited well and that the ultimate target is to win back-to-back titles.
‘Good players are made by coaches. We have recruited well and we are ready to pick maximum points from the Valley like we did last season. We respect them but we do not fear them,’ said Sharon Kizza, Assistant Head Coach of Kampala Queens.
The Queens’ squad has been boosted by the arrival of striker Joanita Ainembabazi, defenders Catherine Wujja and Marion Amangat, as well as the Zambian duo Precious Phiri and Square Maiwase, and goalkeeper Sharon Kaidu.
Both teams will have to deal with injuries to key players which could affect their dynamics and strategy. Warriors midfielder Shakira Nyinagihirwa is not yet fully fit for selection, while Wayodi Merciline and Kwatulira Winfred will be out for Kampala Queens.
Last season, each team managed to beat the other on the road. The Queens won 4-1 at the Valley, while the Warriors triumphed 2-1 at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.
Matchday One action will continue on Saturday 4th with two fixtures. The 2021/2022 champions She Corporate FC will host Uganda Martyrs High School FC at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru. The Sharks, who hired Burundian international Head Coach Inanahazwe Balyse, will be hoping to redeem their past glory after failing to impress in recent campaigns. For the Kidawalime girls, the target is a top-three finish, though this will be a challenge given the departure of key players Latifa Nakasi and goalkeeper Sharon Kaidu.
The other match of the day will see debutants St Noa Girls Zana FC make a long trip east to face Amus College WFC at Amus College Stadium. Head Coach Frank Anyau will hope to prove that last season’s impressive performance was not a one-off. Amus College WFC finished fourth last season and also won the FUFA Women’s Cup 2025. Newcomers St Noa Girls Zana FC equally performed strongly in the second division to earn promotion, finishing the season unbeaten. They will hope to maintain their place in the league with a strong start under new head coach Tonny Mawejje.
Matchday One will be rounded off with three fixtures on Sunday 5th. Lady Doves FC will be at home against Olila High School FC at Katusabe Ground. The former have a strong home record and have made Masindi a difficult place to visit, losing only five games at Katusabe Ground since 2021. The latter struggled last season and narrowly avoided relegation, finishing only two points above the drop. The Soroti-based side also lost key players Marion Amangat and Dorcus Lwalisa, and will have much work to do to avoid relegation this time.
Makerere University WFC will welcome Rines SS WFC at Makerere University Ground. The university side lost skipper Zaina Namuleme to Kenya Police Bullets, but Coach Fred Ndawula insists that players can be replaced. They have strengthened their squad with two promising forwards, Halima Kampi and Allen Nassazi, who are expected to combine well with Eva Naggayi. However, Coach Bright Nyanzi’s Rines side have a promising, energetic and youthful squad that plays as a unit and could spring a surprise. This promises to be an exciting fixture.
The final match of the opening weekend will see newcomers Asubo Ladies host She Maroons FC at Kampala Quality Ground. Asubo have reinforced their squad with the addition of defender Fatuma Nakasumba and midfielders Shakira Nalule and Prossy Nalumansi in a bid to retain their place in the top flight. The Maroons, meanwhile, boast experienced players such as Norah Alupo and Kauthara Naluyima, alongside new signing Lillian Mutuzo. Under new head coach Maxwell Ogwal, the Prison Sentries will be favourites to secure maximum points if they avoid complacency.
