Ikpeazu Mubiru Delighted to Join Uganda Cranes Camp

Uchechukwu Mubiru Ikpeazu expressed his delight after taking part in his first training session with the Uganda Cranes at Namboole Stadium ahead of the FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. The forward, who returns to the national setup after previous setbacks, described the moment as long overdue.

‘Yeah, it feels good. It has been a long time coming because every time I have been caught up, I have had a situation, maybe injuries or last time there was COVID. So to finally obviously be here with the national team, obviously being in Uganda, because I have not been here for almost two decades, it is amazing. So yeah, I am excited,’ Ikpeazu told the media.

The Scotland-based striker joined his teammates for his first session on Monday and said the experience was both refreshing and important for team bonding.

‘Obviously, there was a lot of travelling yesterday, but I feel good now. I have got the first training session out of the way and it was good team bonding to be with the boys as well. I think to build that chemistry is important. So yeah, I am happy. I feel good. I feel fine.’

Ikpeazu emphasised that representing Uganda is a privilege and pledged to give his best for the team.

‘Playing for your national team is a privilege. Like I said, I have not been here for a while. So this is my country. This is where I’m from. It is a privilege to be in the position to want to represent your nation. So yeah, I am relishing it. And of course, there is going to be expectations and I want to be able to be the difference and help the team in any way to help us move forward.’

The forward also revealed that he has been closely following the Cranes in recent months and is eager to adapt to the team’s style under Coach Paul Joseph Put.

‘I have seen, I have watched a couple of games prior to me coming here. I have seen some highlights and I have been trying to understand the way we play and how the coach wants us to play. So yeah, it is been really good. I have seen the stadium packed.’

As camp progresses, twenty-three out of the thirty summoned players are so far in camp. They include Mutyaba Travis, Ronald Ssekiganda, Alionzi Nafian, Denis Onyango, Magoola Salim, Kakande Patrick, Serunjogi Joel, Ssemugabi Jude, Mpande Joseph, Achayi Herbert, Gavin Kizito, Rogers Torach, Mukundane Hillary, Allan Okello, Mpande Reagan, Omedi Denis, Mutakubwa Joel, Watambala Abdu Karim, Semakula Kenneth, Elio Capradossi, Rogers Mato, Uchechukwu Mubiru Ikpeazu and Toby Sibbick.

  • 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Onyango Relishes Return to Uganda Cranes Camp

2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Onyango Relishes Return to Uganda Cranes Camp

Veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango has described his return to the Uganda Cranes as a special moment, calling it an honour to once again wear national colours ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier matches against Mozambique and Somalia.

‘First of all, happy to be back. Round two. It was good news for me because I was also in camp for the club when the call-up came and I shared the news with the team and they were very happy for me because all of them knew that I had retired but some of them wanted to see me back for probably the final time. For me it was incredible to be called back to the national team and to represent the national team and of course the club because when I’m here I’m also representing the club that I play for. So it was good news for everyone at the club and they were wishing me all well,’ Onyango said.

The Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper added that he is relishing the chance to work alongside a new crop of players.

‘For the boys, most of them I have played with and some I have not. I am getting to know them better. Time will tell but it is a very young group, a very energetic group and ready to fight. So for me I am just happy to be with the young blood. They will work hard for me, I believe they will work hard.’

Onyango stressed that no player is guaranteed a place in the starting line-up, highlighting the competition for places among the goalkeepers.

‘There are no guarantees that I am to start. There is Jamal, there is Mutakubwa, there is also Alionzi but yes the position is there for grabs. There is no guarantees in football. Whoever is ready to represent and give the national team the best will play and all we want is for the team to win and get maximum results.’

Reflecting on the responsibility that comes with his return, Onyango noted that experience and unity will be key for the Cranes.

‘Well the responsibility remains the same because what is needed is the results. Regardless of whether I have come in for the second time or the first time, the performance is what speaks volumes. So what we need to do is to support each other and be positive because it is very, very important to stay positive and know that we are all fighting for the same goal. Of course every team needs senior players and young blood because the young blood gives more energy and the senior players help the players to calm down when there is pressure to help them to manage the game. The game requires a lot of experience but it also requires a lot of running which is done by the young ones and that is what we share. We share different ideas, we pick up the good ones and we get the results because no one can win with only youngsters. The team always needs senior players and youngsters to be blended so that they get the results.’

Twenty-three out of the thirty summoned players are so far in camp. They include Mutyaba Travis, Ronald Ssekiganda, Alionzi Nafian, Denis Onyango, Magoola Salim, Kakande Patrick, Serunjogi Joel, Ssemugabi Jude, Mpande Joseph, Achayi Herbert, Gavin Kizito, Rogers Torach, Mukundane Hillary, Allan Okello, Mpande Reagan, Omedi Denis, Mutakubwa Joel, Watambala Abdu Karim, Semakula Kenneth, Elio Capradossi, Rogers Mato, Uchechukwu Mubiru Ikpeazu and Toby Sibbick.

  • Uganda Cranes Hold First Training Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, Put Impressed

Uganda Cranes Hold First Training Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, Put Impressed

The Uganda Cranes have held their first training session at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Uganda will face Mozambique on 5th September 2025 before playing Somalia on 8th September 2025 in two crucial back-to-back fixtures.

As of this evening, twenty-three out of the thirty summoned players are in camp. They include Mutyaba Travis, Ronald Ssekiganda, Alionzi Nafian, Denis Onyango, Magoola Salim, Kakande Patrick, Serunjogi Joel, Ssemugabi Jude, Mpande Joseph, Achayi Herbert, Gavin Kizito, Rogers Torach, Mukundane Hillary, Allan Okello, Mpande Reagan, Omedi Denis, Mutakubwa Joel, Watambala Abdu Karim, Semakula Kenneth, Elio Capradossi, Rogers Mato, Uchechukwu Mubiru Ikpeazu and Toby Sibbick.

Head Coach Paul Joseph Put admitted that the opening day of camp presented its challenges, especially with players travelling from different parts of the world after a busy weekend schedule with their clubs.

‘You know, the most difficult part for the coach is the first day, when the players are coming, and I told them, because with the national team you do not have time, it is not the preparation that you have for 3-4 weeks, you have only 2-3-4 days, and then you have to play. But I think they understand very well the message,’ he said.

Put further noted that more players are expected to join camp within the next 24 hours.

‘They have been playing in the weekend, and also you know in Africa it is not easy to travel, so there will be players coming tonight, tomorrow morning, but those who are coming tomorrow morning it will be difficult to get them on the field, we are going to work with them individually, but I think most of the players will be on the pitch tomorrow. We are normally complete if we have no injuries, so we have to go with the players we have. So I do not see any problems, only maybe Jude we have to see. We are going to do medical today to find out if it is not too serious. If it is not, then he will integrate also in the training.’

The coach also reflected on the progress of the CHAN players who earned their places in the senior team.

‘They have been working with me almost three months, every day from morning till night, so I know them, I know their progress, I have confidence in them. So I also have to put pressure on the players, that nobody is secure of their place. But the players who were called up for CHAN, I think they have been proven, they have been progressing, so it is up to them. With me, I don’t see if you are playing outside the country, or in Uganda, for me the best players will play.’

The Cranes will continue training daily at Namboole as the squad builds momentum for the doubleheader.

  • The Showdown 16: St Joseph’s College Layibi to Host the FUFA TV Cup Final Round

The Showdown 16: St Joseph’s College Layibi to Host the FUFA TV Cup Final Round

Gulu City is set for football excitement as St Joseph’s College Layibi hosts the final round of the FUFA TV Cup 2025, famously branded “The Showdown 16.” From 1st to 9th September 2025, the battle for this year’s trophy will take center stage in Northern Uganda.

Sixteen of the best schools from across the country will converge at Layibi, each carrying the pride of their regions. These schools earned their places by qualifying through regional chapters, and now all eyes are on who will rise to the occasion and be crowned champions. It is notable that the defending champions Nabumali High School is amongst the 16 ready to defend their trophy.

Three pioneer schools including Mengo Senior School, Jinja College and the Inaugural winner St Mary’s College Kisubi will also be in Layibi.

The teams are expected to arrive in Gulu on Monday, 1st September, with the action kicking off the next day. The opening ceremony match promises fireworks as the hosts, St Joseph’s College Layibi, take on Kako SSS at 4pm.

    The Tournament Format

The 16 schools were drawn into four groups of four. At the group stage, each team will face the others in a round-robin format. Only the top two schools from each group will progress to the knockout stages – quarterfinals, semifinals, and ultimately the grand final.

    The Groups

    • Group A: St. Joseph’s College Layibi, Kako SSS, Muntuyera High School, St. Charles Lwanga Kasasa
    • Group B: Nabumali High School, Mpanga SSS, Duhaga SS, Jinja College
    • Group C: St. Mary’s College Kisubi, Dr. Obote College Boroboro, Ngora High School, Mengo Senior School
    • Group D: Jinja SSS, St. Charles Lwanga College Koboko, Mbale SS, Kibuli SS

    Expectations and Talking Points

This year’s edition promises fierce competition. Traditional giants such as St. Mary’s College Kisubi and Kibuli SS will be looking to stamp their authority, while emerging forces like St. Charles Lwanga Koboko and Ngora High School arrive hungry to upset the order.

The hosts, St. Joseph’s College Layibi, carry the weight of home support and will be eager to make a strong statement in front of their fans. Northern Uganda is expected to come alive with vibrant crowds, school anthems, and youthful energy throughout the nine-day football action.

The spotlight will also be on individual brilliance, tactical battles, and the never-dying school spirit that makes the FUFA Tv Cup unique.

The big question remains: Which school will rise above the rest and take home the coveted trophy?

CHAN 2024: Lamlioui’s wonder strike seals Morocco’s record third CHAN crown against valiant Madagascar

Oussama Lamlioui’s long-range stunner ensured Morocco retained their grip on the African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Madagascar in the 2024 final at Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium.

The RS Berkane forward produced the moment of magic in the 80th minute, striking instinctively from nearly fifty yards to beat Madagascar goalkeeper Michel “Toldo” Ramandimbisoa, sealing Morocco’s record third CHAN title.

Madagascar, playing their first-ever continental final, stunned the Atlas Lions early when forward Felicite “Fely” Manohantsoa rifled home a sensational ninth-minute opener from distance to spark wild celebrations among the crowd.

But Morocco’s composure and tournament pedigree soon told. In the 27th minute, Youssef Mehri restored parity with a towering header from Khalid Baba’s cross before Lamlioui pounced on a deflected ball to give the North Africans a 2-1 halftime lead.

The Barea, however, refused to bow. Inspired substitutions and spirited play brought them level in the 68th minute when captain Nantenaina “Tony” Randiramanampisoa’s cross was flicked on by Fely for substitute “Toky” Rakotondraibe to finish sharply.

With the tie delicately poised at 2-2, Lamlioui once again rose to the occasion, punishing a loose clearance with his audacious strike that looped beyond Toldo’s fingertips.

The breathtaking final highlighted Morocco’s dominance in CHAN history while underlining Madagascar’s meteoric rise on the continental stage. The Atlas Lions celebrated a historic third crown, but the Barea departed Nairobi with pride and admiration after pushing the champions all the way.

  • Senegal Edge Sudan in Penalty Shootout to Seal CHAN Bronze

Senegal Edge Sudan in Penalty Shootout to Seal CHAN Bronze

Senegal secured third place at the CHAN (PAMOJA 2024) tournament after defeating Sudan 4-2 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on Friday evening.

The bronze medal marks a second successive podium finish for the defending champions, who had been denied a place in the final after falling to Morocco in the semi-finals. For Sudan, the wait for a third CHAN medal continues despite an impressive run and a spirited display in the play-off.

Sudan Strike First, Senegal Fight Back

Backed by a lively Kampala crowd, Sudan began on the front foot and took an early lead in the 6th minute. Mohamed Tia Asad rose highest to nod home Abdel Raouf Yagoub’s corner, giving the Falcons of Jediane a deserved 1-0 advantage.
That lead stood until half-time as Sudan displayed great discipline at the back, with goalkeeper Mohamed Abooja producing key saves to frustrate Senegal’s attacks.

But after the restart, Senegal responded with intensity. Their breakthrough came in the 58th minute when Seyni Ndiaye met Ousseynou Seck’s fine cross with a perfectly timed header to level matters at 1-1. From then on, the Lions of Teranga controlled much of the play, though Sudan remained dangerous on the counter.

    Penalties Decide the Tie

With no extra-time provision for the third-place playoff, the game went straight to penalties after 90 minutes.

Sudan faltered first—Walieldin Khdir missed the opening kick before Musab Makeen saw his effort saved by Marc Diouf. Although Mohamed Ahmed Saeed and Ahmed Tabanja converted theirs, the damage had been done.

Senegal, meanwhile, were flawless from the spot. Joseph Layousse, Issa Kane, Vieux Cissé, and Libasse Guèye all dispatched confidently to seal a 4-2 shootout triumph.

Senegal Redeem Themselves, Sudan Earn Respect

For head coach Souleymane Diallo, the victory offered a measure of redemption after missing out on the final. “This was about character,” he said. “The players showed maturity after the semi-final setback. We wanted to finish with something, and we did that.”

Senegal’s bronze also highlighted their consistency, as they stretched their unbeaten record in open play to 10 CHAN matches.
Sudan, guided by Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah, bowed out with pride. Despite domestic football being disrupted by conflict, they defied the odds to reach the semi-finals, knocking out Nigeria and pushing Madagascar all the way.

Appiah saluted his team’s resilience: “We came very far with limited preparation. I am proud of how the players fought. Sudanese football has shown it still has heart.”

    Attention Turns to the Final

With Senegal taking bronze and Sudan narrowly missing out, focus now shifts to Nairobi, where Morocco will clash with Madagascar in Saturday’s final at Moi International Sports Centre.

BUL held, Express edge NEC in FUFA Super 8 First Leg

Defending champions BUL FC were held to a goalless draw by Maroons FC, while Express FC edged NEC FC 1-0 under the floodlights in Thursday’s FUFA Super 8 doubleheader at the Hamz Stadium Nakivubo.

In the early kickoff, BUL dominated possession but could not find a way past a disciplined Maroons defense.

Debutants Farouk Yawe and Kelvin Barni featured for BUL, while Maroons goalkeeper Hassan Matovu made two vital saves to secure a clean sheet. The two sides will settle the tie in the return leg on September 10th at Nakivubo Stadium, with a semifinal place at stake.

Later in the evening, Express FC sealed a narrow win over NEC thanks to Ali Ismael’s 13th-minute rebound strike. Despite NEC piling pressure in the second half, goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan stood out with a string of saves to keep them in contention. The two sides meet again in the reverse fixture on September 9th at Hamz Stadium, live on FUFA TV.

The FUFA Super 8 brings together the top eight teams from last season’s Uganda Premier League, with BUL seeking to defend the crown they won against Vipers last year.

Vipers SC opted out due to other engagements and were replaced by Express FC.

  • Eleven Players from TotalEnergies CHAN 2024 Trusted by Put for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Eleven Players from TotalEnergies CHAN 2024 Trusted by Put for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put announced his 28-man squad for the two games scheduled for September at an event held at FUFA Complex Mengo on Tuesday 27th August 2025. Uganda will face Mozambique on 5th September 2025 at Mandela National Stadium and later face Somalia on Monday, 8th September 2025 at the same venue. Both matches kick off at 7:00 PM.

While addressing the press, the head coach expressed confidence in the eleven players who featured in TotalEnergies CHAN 2024.

‘I am so proud of the boys and the technical team at large. It was very hot during the two months, and we saw players doing their best. I was very happy with the way they were working and from this, I am so confident that they will deliver. I was satisfied with their energy. If they can bring the work they played against South Africa, we are good to go. They have been progressing in each game; they deserve to be in the squad. I want them to connect more with the international players so that they can be more exposed,’ he said.

When asked about including Denis Onyango in the squad, the head coach expressed his thoughts.

‘He helped out the goalkeepers in the CHAN team and I got the opportunity to meet and understand him. He is very experienced, and being that he plays for Sundowns, we need that experience for the national team. Playing these two games will also help us prepare more for the AFCON tournament.’

Put showed gratitude to the fans who supported the team during the CHAN tournament.

‘I have never had a chance to thank the fans who supported the boys during CHAN. They pushed them and motivated them to play and make every minute on the pitch count. Thank you, fans, thank you Uganda. I have always experienced this with the senior team; they are always behind us. We ask for the same energy even in our upcoming games.’

The Cranes will kick off their training on September 1st and will start entering residential camp at the FUFA Hotel in Kisaasi on 31st August 2025.

    URA FC 2-1 Kitara FC
In the tournament opener, URA FC secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kitara FC in a match filled with chances and late drama. Under the guidance of coach Alex Isabirye Musongola, URA took the lead in the 33rd minute through a composed finish by Joseph Semujju.

The first goal came in the 35th minute when Hassan Mubiru capitalised on a defensive error to put Villa ahead with a sharp finish. Despite KCCA’s efforts to make a comeback in the second half, Villa made it worse for them as they scored the second goal in the 83rd minute through Andrew Otim. 2025 FUFA Super 8 Kicks Off Today with URA vs Kitara, KCCA vs SC Villa Blockbusters

The 2025 FUFA Super 8 tournament officially gets underway this evening at the MTN Omondi Stadium, setting the stage for another thrilling preseason showdown among Uganda’s top clubs.

Two mouthwatering fixtures headline match day one, with URA FC facing Kitara FC at 4:00pm before KCCA FC lock horns with SC Villa under the floodlights at 7:00pm.

URA FC vs Kitara FC – Early Test for Isabirye’s Charges

URA FC come into the tournament fresh from unveiling four signings: experienced forward Nelson Senkatuka, defenders Arthur Kiggundu and Ronald Otti, plus last season’s FUFA Big League Best Goalkeeper Muhammad Ssekeba.

Head coach Alex Isabirye believes the Super 8 will provide a perfect platform to build cohesion ahead of the new StarTimes Uganda Premier League season.

“We are taking this tournament very seriously because it gives us a chance to fine-tune the team before the new season kicks off. The new players have integrated well and are adding real competition in the squad. Against Kitara, we expect a competitive match, but our focus is on improving every aspect of our game,” said Isabirye.

Kitara, the Royals, are also active in the transfer market and will be keen to make a strong statement in their opening clash against the Tax Collectors.

KCCA FC vs SC Villa – A Rivalry Under Floodlights

The day’s second fixture sees traditional giants KCCA FC and SC Villa renew their rivalry in what promises to be an explosive encounter. New KCCA coach Brian Ssenyondo admits it’s not the easiest of opening fixtures but welcomes the challenge.

“It’s never a fixture you wish to start with because of the rivalry between the two clubs, but at the same time, it’s the best test of character for the players. We want to see how they respond in such a big game,” noted Ssenyondo.

Kasasiro Boys’ defender Filbert Obenchan echoed his coach’s words, stressing the need for caution:

CHAN 2024: Morocco Edge Senegal on Penalties to Seal Final Spot

Morocco held their nerve to eliminate defending champions Senegal in a tense penalty shootout and book their place in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) final. The Atlas Lions triumphed 5-3 on spot kicks after a 1-1 stalemate in their semifinal clash played in Kampala, Uganda on Tuesday evening.

It was a fiercely contested encounter, with Senegal looking dangerous on the counter while Morocco dominated possession. The Teranga Lions struck first after 15 minutes when Layousse Samb rose highest to head home Libasse Guèye’s corner, punishing slack Moroccan marking.

The Atlas Lions, however, responded swiftly. A poor clearance from Senegal’s defense fell kindly to Morocco’s set-piece specialist Sabir Bougrine, who produced a stunning volley from the edge of the box that left goalkeeper Marc Philips Diouf with no chance.

Drama unfolded early in the second half when Morocco’s Marouane Louadni was initially shown a red card for fouling Vieux Cissé, seemingly denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. VAR intervened, downgrading the decision to a yellow after replays suggested Cissé went down too easily.

Both sides pushed for a winner but lacked the finishing touch. Ayoub Khairi went close for Morocco midway through the second half, while Senegal’s Ababacar Sarr headed wide with the goal at his mercy late on. With extra time failing to produce a breakthrough, penalties decided the contest.

Morocco captain Mohamed Hrimat confidently opened the shootout before Senegal defender Mbaye Ndiaye struck the crossbar with his effort, handing the advantage to the Atlas Lions. The North Africans converted all five of their penalties to claim victory and seal their passage to the final.

Two-time winners Morocco now have the chance to set a new record for CHAN titles when they face Madagascar in Saturday’s final at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya (15:00 GMT). Senegal will play Sudan in the third-place playoff on Friday in Kampala.

CHAN 2024: Uganda Cranes exit with pride after narrow loss to Senegal

Uganda Cranes’ fairytale run at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) came to a close on Saturday evening at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, following a narrow 1-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal in the quarterfinals.

A second-half strike from Oumar Ba proved decisive for the Lions of Teranga, but it did little to overshadow the gallant fight and resilience shown by the Cranes in front of their home fans.

The game was fiercely contested with both teams struggling to carve out clear opportunities. Cranes goalkeeper Joel Mutakubwa and his Senegalese counterpart Marc Philips Arona Diouf were largely untroubled in the first half, as the match turned into a tense battle of tactical discipline and patience.

Senegal’s moment came in the 62nd minute when Libasse Guèye broke down the left flank before setting up Ba, who finished clinically to give the holders the advantage.

Uganda, roared on by a passionate Namboole crowd, responded with urgency. Substitute Kiza Usama came agonisingly close late in the game after a spilled effort by Diouf led to a goalmouth scramble, but he could not keep his shot down.

Despite the result, the Cranes leave the tournament with heads held high, having made history by reaching the quarterfinals for the very first time after six previous attempts. Their performances throughout the tournament inspired pride and belief, signalling a bright future for Ugandan football.

With Kenya and Tanzania also bowing out at the same stage, Uganda’s journey remains a landmark moment for East African football, particularly as hosts.

FUFA salutes the players, coaches, and fans whose passion and dedication drove the Cranes to this historic milestone at CHAN 2024.
