L-R Geoffrey Massa, Abdallah Mubiru and kitsman Frank Bumpenje

The team will depart for Bushenyi on Friday morning ahead of the Regional Tour game organized by the national team sponsors Airtel and Nile Special. According to Mubiru, the game will help him assess the areas he must put more emphasis before the team flies out a few days later to South Africa for the COSAFA tournament.

“I am happy with the morale and the response of the players I have worked with today,” Mubiru stated. “However, the fitness levels are a bit below the required standards but it is understandable because they are coming from a break after the league ended a fortnight back.”

Mubiru also expressed his pleasure in having Massa, who captained the team to its first AFCON qualification in 2017 after a period of 38 years, saying that his wealth of experience will go a long way in motivating and inspiring the predominantly young side.

“Massa is one of the greatest players in Uganda’s history when you consider his achievements. His presence in the team is a very great factor that is going to immensely build these players. I feel very pleased to be working with him,” added Mubiru.

KCCA FC players were not part of the first training session after being given permission to take part in their club’s league title parade around the capital city in Kampala.

The Uganda Cranes’ preparations for the Total AFCON Finals 2019 got underway on Monday with a preliminary squad of 19 players entering residential camp at Kabira Country Club, Bukoto.

Brief address by the Uganda Cranes Head coach Sebastien Desabre

While attending the first ever Media session (Question and Answer), Uganda Cranes Coach Sebastien Desabre told the press that he started with locally based players who are not in action since them have completed their fixtures.

The residential camp will take a fortnight in which period two practice games will be played on Thursday 23rd May (against the COSAFA bound Cranes) and the second one on the 25th May 2019 with a team yet to be known, both games at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

“We shall play two friendly matches against an unnamed opponent on 9th June 2019  and then with Ivory Coast on 15th June 2019, before flying to Cairo,” Desabre told the media.

    Selected Questions

Media: Can you brief us on players like Hassan Wasswa and Godfrey Walusimbi who currently aren’t engaged with any clubs?  Are you not concerned about their fitness or you have a special programme for them?

Sebastien Desabre: After the (final qualifier) Tanzania game, we put in place a methodology to monitor all players like Hassan Wasswa and Walusimbi Godfrey where we get routine feedback about their progress on fitness levels. We have also been monitoring players who were recovering from injury like Sadam Juma and Moses Waiswa.

Uganda Cranes coach Sebastien Desabre with FUFA Communications Manager Ahmed Hussein

Media: Don’t you have some other options than considering players who haven’t been active?

Sebastien Desabre: For me, the most important issue is preparing the boys to get ready for the game. Our job is to prepare players for the official date which is 22nd June 2019. Many players had their seasons end early and I’m sure they don’t share the same fitness levels but then we shall prepare them for the six weeks we are to spend with them and by the time of the first game, they will all be on the same level.

Media: You have named two squads-AFCON and COSAFA. Will you take charge of all the two teams?

Sebastien Desabre: I can’t take charge of both teams.  We have coaches who were appointed to take charge of the COSAFA team and those are Abdallah Mubiru as head coach assisted by Morley Byekwaso, Sadiq Wassa as the goalkeeping coach while Geoffrey Massa will be Team Coordinator.
