Stanbic Uganda Cup joint record holders Express Football Club will face BUL FC in the quarterfinals. This comes after the draw was held on Wednesday at FUFA House in Mengo, Kampala

Express FC just like KCCA FC has won the prestigious knockout tournament ten times with their last triumph coming in 2007. The Red Eagles will face a tricky side in BUL FC who have always been tough opponents in as far as the previous league engagements are concerned.

In the last ten league games between the two sides, Express FC have only won twice with the Jinja-based outfit winning six while the other two games ended in stalemates.

To reach this stage, Express FC dumped out Police FC on kicks from the penalty mark (3-1 after normal time ended goalless) while BUL FC, on the other hand, outwitted Bukedea Town Council FC 4-1.

Former Express FC player Ashe Mukasa picked Express FC during the Stanbic Uganda Cup draws at FUFA House on Wedneday

Last season’s runners up Vipers SC will visit Proline FC at the StarTimes stadium Lugogo,  the first time the Venoms will play away this season inthe competition after dumping Rushere Growers(walkover),  Kansai Plascon and Kiboga Young FC all at home.

There will be renewal acquaintances after Kyetume FC were drawn at home against Wakiso Giants. The two teams are both in Elgon group of the StarTimes FUFA Big League and will be facing off for the second time this season. The league meeting ended in a one-all draw at Nakisunga playground.

Kyetume FC ousted Kitara FC in the round of 16  while the Purple Sharks eliminated Tooro United.

Nebbi Central FC another big league entity who dumped out Nkambi Coffee FC will host Bright Stars FC.

Former Uganda Cranes legend Ashe Mukasa and Ronald Muganzi, Head of Agent Banking at Stanbic Bank Uganda conducted the quarterfinal draws.

Mukasa famously known as the ‘football god’ with his left sweet foot is best known for his career at Express FC and the only Ugandan named on the best team during the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations.

He reminisced how the competition was tight at the time that he did not get the chance to lift the Uganda Cup-then the Kakungulu Cup.

“At the time when I played, we had very many good teams like KCC (now KCCA FC), Simba FC, Nsambya Fc, Maroons FC, and Coffee FC. So it was very hard for any team to win a trophy and I must say not winning this tournament still hurts me.” Said Mukasa who played for Nateete FC, Nakivubo Boys, Express FC among others.

Muganzi on the other expressed delight about the progress of the tournament and indicated Stanbic Bank will continue to offer their support.

“As Stanbic Bank, we are happy to associate with FUFA through the Uganda Cup a tournament that brings thrilling action throughout the country. We can only promise more commitment and support towards the tournament.”

Like it has been the case in the previous editions where FUFA attaches Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities to the tournament, the same will be done this year with the campaign officially launched today by FUFA Events Manager, Leila Nankya who called upon the public to embrace the cause.

“As we have done in the previous editions,  the 2019 Stanbic Uganda Cup will have a CSR activity where we collect clothes and give them to the less privileged at the end of the tournament. I therefore, call upon the public to show support to the cause by bringing the items here at FUFA House and Stanbic Bank branches around the country”

  • DECOLAS KIIZA: Financial Stability is key to Sporting Success

DECOLAS KIIZA: Financial Stability is key to Sporting Success

Financial Stability is key to Sporting Success

Sporting Organisations like the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) require funds for running activities like competitions, promotions, infrastructure, equipment, day-today administrative costs, training for human resource (coaches, referees, instructors, administrative staff, etc.), staff salaries and wages, taxes and other statutory obligations, among others.

Any institution should be in position to meet its obligations which is no mean feat.

The main sources of funding for FUFA include grants from mother international organisations (FIFA and CAF), Government funding, sponsorships,, membership contributions, gate collections from competition matches, fines, registration and licensing levies, sale of merchandise and regalia to mention.

Successful (sporting) organisations don’t undertake many things; they set specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-bound goals, objectives and targets; maximise revenue collection; and exercise prudence while spending.

In 2013 FUFA set to double its income over 4 years by doubling energies and efforts through appropriate policies and strategic goals which led to the projected revenue of Ugx 34 billion in 2019 way above the earlier set forecasts.

Some of the Delegates during the 94th FUFA Ordinary Assembly held in Kabale who passed the UGX 34bn budget for 2019.

One ought to know, analyse and satisfy the stakeholders’ interests and aspirations. International mother bodies (FIFA etal) set members’ obligations in addition to guidelines as conditions for their grants and compliance is the remedy. Set and practise policies that will meet the other party’s expectations for you to enjoy your rights and privileges to the maximum for your benefit and those of the membership.

Government is a key ally. You must be a good citizen!  FUFA has strategically and systematically engaged Government for its benefit and its members under the FLIP acronym; Funding, Legal framework, Infrastructure and Policies. Funds to sports activities from the National budget have since increased and FUFA has a national budget line of up to Ugx 10 billion this financial year to support the Uganda Cranes.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo hands over Uganda Cranes portrait to the President General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the 1st lady Janet Kataha Museveni at Entebbe State House. Government supports Uganda Cranes to a tune of UGX 10bn.

The sports law now under review should address the now professional environment as opposed to the amateur setting of the yester years. The necessary infrastructure must be secured, protected, and appropriate to support professional sports in the country. Government should set policies that give incentives for investment in sports.

The recently FUFA organised working luncheon with the leadership of sports federations and associations was, among others, intended to mobilise for a common voice in the efforts towards a professional sports setting and Government funding. The penny spent was worth it and many more such an interaction will continue.

Sponsorships and partnerships are important for sports organisations; they provide that extra shilling needed for operations and development. However they are best in win-win situations; both parties should be able to reap from the synergy created as a result of the partnership.

The continuous renewal of sponsorships and partnerships with FUFA and improved packages is a testimony that the relationships are meeting both parties’ expectations. The interest has extended to partnerships with the football family countrywide. We only need to accelerate the momentum now created.

The National Insurance Cooperation (NIC) is the latest to rekindle their stake as the official insurance partner of the Uganda Cranes with an increased package; insurance cover for players and technical staff of the Uganda Cranes, the FUFA Drum, etal against injury, illness, and air travel on top of a stand by generator at the extended FUFA Secretariat. Players’ confidence and morale is greatly enhanced as these risks are well catered for. FUFA need not execute any insurance bond for the players and staff while on national duty or in the competitions covered.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo (2nd R) with NIC Officials during the ceremony organised to renew the Insurance partnership for another 4 years.

Previous life threatening illnesses were adequately and promptly handled. Uganda Cranes Goalkeeping Coach Fred Kajoba developed complications while air borne and could have lost his life but NIC promptly bank rolled his medical bills at the prestigious Nakasero Hospital. Career threatening injuries to Vipers Sports Club Khalid Lwalilwa and Express’ Brian Umony, among others, were picked and the boys are alive and kicking (the ball).

The fans that always grace our activities in thick and thin should be respected as their needs and aspirations are well addressed at competition events. Their contribution could be taken as minimal and sometimes insignificant but they might be the reason Government cares, sponsors and partners come along and don’t want to leave, your sales of merchandise and regalia increase!

Keep your membership mobilised with the desire to strive and grow their organisation all the time. Let those that comply enjoy their rights and privileges to the maximum lest they moot ideas for internal strife and leadership replacement at the detriment of the institution.

Uganda Beach Soccer Association (UBSA) delegates pose for a group photo with some of the FUFA Electoral Committee members

Therefore the people in sports entities must endeavour to maintain financial stability in order to fulfill our dreams. FUFA under the current leadership with Eng. Moses Magogo at the helm has set the right example to emulate.

Defending champions Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC and Kampala Queens extended their lead in Victoria and Elizabeth group respectively with comfortable victories over the weekend in the FUFA Women Elite League 2018/19 season.

With the regular season into the final bend, teams are keen on sealing playoff slots hence making the games more competitive and counting.

Four time Champions Kawempe Muslim ran riot against Rines Women FC registering a 6-0 win to move to 25 points six above second placed Lady Doves. This therefore means that Kawempe need just three points in their remaining five games to confirm their berth in the playoffs.

Juliet Nalukenge scored a brace to take her goals tally to nine and she is now the joint top scorer with Hasifa Nassuuna of UCU Lady Cardinals.

The other goals for Kawempe Muslim were scored by Asia Nakibuuka (brace), Sharon Naddunga and Tracy Jones Akiror.

In the same group, Lady Doves secured a 2-0 win at home against Asubo Gafford Ladies to remain second on 18 points.

Nulu Nakyanzi and Kenyan striker Lilian Veronica Zeddy scored a goal apiece for the Masindi based team.

She Corporate FC moved to third place after a convincing 3-0 win against Dynamic SS Jjeza. This was the first time that Ali Zzinda’s coached side were scoring more than one goal in a game this season.

Aisha Namubiru scored twice and Jacky Ogol added the other goal to guide She Corporate to victory.

Ajax Queens and Muteesa I Royal University settled for a one all draw with Phiona Nabbumba and Margaret Namirimu scoring respectively.

In Elizabeth group, the competition for the playoff slots is still tight with about five teams in contention.

Kampala Queens FC routed Bugiri Town View 4-0 to lead the table on goal difference. They have the same number of points (18) with UCU Lady Cardinals and Olila High School.

Coached by Faridah Bulega who is also the Crested Cranes head coach, Kampala Queens FC have a better goal difference of eleven while UCU Lady Cardinals and Olila High School have eight and seven respectively.

Lilian Mutuuzo, Damalie Matama, Zaina Namuleme and Namwase Monica were all on the score sheet for Kampala Queens.

UCU Lady Cardinals needed a late winner courtesy of midfielder Jauhara Naluyima to edge Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga in a closely contested encounter.

Olila High School also won with the same scoreline against Lango Queens thanks to Siporosa Amoding’s goal.

Fauziah Najjemba scored a brace to help Israel Soccer Academy overcome a resilient She MAK in the game played at the Valley ground, Kawempe on Sunday.

The two goals took Najjemba’s tally to eight this season only one behind leading scorers Nassuna and Nalukenge.

The top two teams in each group at the end of the regular season qualify for the playoffs to determine the champion.

Emphasis on Transparency as FUFA Inducts Judicial Bodies

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has a vision to become the number one footballing nation in Africa on and off the pitch and that comes with several aspects.

In a bid to attain the aforementioned vision, FUFA through its Mission of developing, promoting and protecting the game must keep the preserve on the values through regulations.

On Saturday 16th February 2019, FUFA held a one day retreat for the different judicial bodies. The workshop held at Imperial Royale Hotel was first aimed at inducting the several committees but having members go through orientation.

The FUFA Legal Committee and FUFA Players Status Committee were invited for the orientation as well because of the nature of their work they handle in relation to football matters.

FUFA President, Eng. Moses Hassim Magogo who was the main Instructor emphasised transparency to the different committees when executing their duties.

    ‘It is another milestone for the game of football as we move towards our vision of becoming the number one football nation in Africa on and off the pitch. In order to uphold the ethics of the game, we need strong judicial bodies that are impartial, transparent and committed’ said Magogo before adding;

‘As FUFA we shall give the judicial bodies necessary support. Those that are found guilty must be put to book while the innocent ones need to be given their liberty to serve football again’

‘Judicial bodies are supposed to provide fast and fair justice to football stakeholders. We are also supposed to protect the game against vices like predetermination of results, hooliganism and corruption’ added the experienced Magogo who is a FIFA Instructor and CAF Executive Committee Member with vast knowledge on football matters.

  • FUFA’s response to the head of Uganda Boxing Federation

FUFA’s response to the head of Uganda Boxing Federation

FUFA is extremely disappointed by the choice of words and lack of facts in an offensive opinion by Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) President Mr. Moses Muhangi under the headline ‘FUFA planned Robbery of 10bn from Uganda Government’.

To the game of football and the institution of FUFA, the image and brand has cost us volumes of resources  in terms of time and money. We don’t take lightly casual and unfortunate phrases like those made by Mr. Muhangi.

Our discussion with Mr. Muhangi since the opinion broke out on various media platforms, clearly shows that he doesn’t know the history of the matter.

The approach he has taken may have more long term and detrimental consequences than the presumed objective as it throws our case of the professional sports industry creation and prioritisation debate off balance.

In the prevailing circumstances, FUFA will have no option but as usual to explain ourselves with the history, correspondences, facts and figures where need be.

During that historic meeting in Rwakitura in 2018 when HE the President of the Republic of Uganda directed the funding of a few strategic disciplines in the national budget, he mentioned how his own grandchildren were now talking about the Uganda Cranes and took pictures with the players. This did not come accidentally. It is called Brand Equity created by FUFA and we believe other federations are getting there.

However it was not until the qualification of the Uganda Cranes to the Africa Cup of Nations after 39 years and qualification of the She Cranes to the Netball World Cup that took the powers that are to consider funding to some federations. This is because of the brand equity that had been created by football and netball.

Our engagement with Government has been about Funding of the preparations and presentation of National Representative Teams and Athletes, the Law, Infrastructure and Policies for all Sports disciplines.  These ‘internal’ squabbles among the sports family will only undermine such efforts. We need synergy not squabbles.

Finally, image protection is a key element at FUFA and despite the private apology by Mr. Muhangi, we expect a public apology from the President of Uganda Boxing Federation.

The third edition of the FUFA Women’s Cup got underway over the weekend with several records made as far as the annual knockout competition is concerned.
Crested Cranes defender Shadia Nankya who plays for Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga was the star of the weekend helping her team progress to the next stage.
The lanky defender was lethal as Uganda Martyrs obliterated Watoto Women FC 10-0 in the game played at Lubiri SS on Sunday.
Despite being a defender, Nankya was this time employed as a forward and did not disappoint scoring seven of the ten goals on the day. Esther Naluyimba(brace) and Rashidah Nankya scored the other goals.
The result went down the books of history as the biggest victory in the competition since its inception in 2016. Additionally, Nankya also set up a new record as the first player to score seven goals in one game in women’s football in the FUFA recognized competitions (FUFA Women Elite League and FUFA Women’s Cup).
Nankya has so far scored five goals in the league thus taking her goal tally to twelve in all competitions.
Cup holders UCU Lady Cardinals suffered an early exit losing 3-1 to league champions Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC.
Anita Namata, Aisha Nantongo, Samalie Nacahwa scored a goal each for Kawempe while Maureen Kinavudori got the consolation for the University side.

In the other game involving two teams from the FUFA Elite League, last season’s losing finalists She Corporate FC edged past Ajax Queens FC winning the game 1-0 courtesy of new recruit Millicent Mwanzi.
Asubo Gafford Ladies recovered from their league loss against Ajax Queens FC to outwit Buganda regional league side Luweero Women FC.
Tanzanian striker Mariana Kimbuya scored a brace while Shakirah Mutiibwa, Joanita Nabirye Faridah Oyella. Sheebah Zalwango added a goal apiece.
Elsewhere, Kawempe Muslim Junior team overcame Highland SS with a 3-0 victory, Mwanda Foundation won 4-2 on kicks from the penalty mark against Jerome Uganda after normal time had ended goalless. In a similar fashion, Divine Girls stunned Rines WFC 4-2 on penalties following a barren stalemate in normal time.
Sagich Royal won 4-0 against Kamodi High. Kumi University, Bugiri Town View SS and Amuria High failed to honor their respective fixtures.
The round of 32 remaining fixtures will be played on 23rd February 2019. These include Isra Soccer Academy hosting Kampala Queens. The two teams are in the same group(Elizabeth) and drew 2-2 recently in a league game.
Bunyaruguru Girls will face Western United, Muteesa I Royal University FC will be at home to Lango Queens while Tooro United from Fort Portal takes on Dynamic Jjeza.
Wakiso Hills vs Lady Doves FC will be played on Wednesday 13th February 2019 at Wakisha Ground.
