    Buganda Province have gone down the books of history as the maiden winners of the FUFA Drum tournament.

    Buganda edged West Nile 2-1 on aggregate in the two legged final to win the inaugural edition of the inter- province championship of 16 teams.

    Carrying a 1-0 advantage heading into the return leg on Saturday at Green Light stadium in Arua, Buganda put up a resilient performance to emerge winners.

    West Nile who were backed with support from thousands of fans started the better side but the visitors too had their chances.

    The home side got the much desired lead after several attempts through BUL FC forward Villa Oromchan four minutes to the break.

    Oromchan jumped high to head home a well delivered cross from left back Rashid Okocha and this seemed to give West Nile momentum.

    The White Rhinos were however affected with injury blows in the second half-first with Geriga Atendere limping off while Rashid Toha too walked off after sustaining an ankle injury.

    With eleven minutes to time, Viane Ssekajugo who has had a sublime performance in the tournament levelled matters.

    Rashid Toha aims to clear the ball out of danger. He never completed the game due to injury.

    Dan Birikwalira, the captain for Buganda won possession in the midfield to lay up Ssekajugo on the rift. The diminutive winger cut inside on his strong left and with a low drive at the near post got to the back of the net.

    Buganda held off pressure to eventually win the trophy that came with a cash prize of 32 million shillings while the runners up West Nile got 15 million shillings.

    Ssekajugo was named man of the match and later on the Most Valuable player of the tournament.

    Buganda Kingdom Sports Minister Owek. Sekabembe Henry, Cultural leaders from Ringa, Alur and Lugbara were represented by their Prime Ministers and Kings. FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo was also in Arua as he handed over the trophy to the winners.

    Uganda Cranes kicked off preparations on Friday morning at Lugogo for the double AFCON 2019 Qualifiers against Lesotho to be played on 13th October 2018.  Sixteen local based players took part in the lively session at the StarTimes Stadium.
    The session started with warm up drills and later climaxed with shooting practices.

    The Uganda Cranes Head coach Sebastien Desabre highlighted the importance of the sessions conducted with the local based players who trained in the morning and a select Squad of U17, U20 & U23 players who will have their sessions at 3pm today on the same pitch. The same programme will continue tomorrow at Lugogo.

    ‘We shall conduct several sessions with the senior local based and the selected junior players to asses their levels of fitness and attitude The sessions will climax with trial match between the senior team and the selected team on Sunday morning at Lugogo’ said Desabre.

    Sebastien also revealed that Julius Poloto is injured and won’t be able to train with the team.
    The team continues with the preparations on Saturday morning (8am) and the select Squad (U17, U20 and U23) at 3pm on the StarTimes Stadium turf.

    FUFA releases breakdown of cash prizes 

    The FUFA Drum Organising Committee has released the breakdown of the cash prizes for teams and most outstanding individuals as the tournament climaxes on Saturday 6th October 2018 in Arua.

    West Nile trailing 1-0 from the first leg will host Buganda in the return leg match at Green Light Stadium Arua.

    FUFA announced at the start of the tournament that 100M would be staked in cash prizes for the tournament. The winner of the tournament that has featured 16 Provinces will take home UGX 32 M. The runner up will be given UGX 15 M. All semifinalists will be given UGX 5M each. Outstanding Individuals-Most Valuable player, Top Scorer, best fan, players in the best XI and return leg Final match referees will get UGX 1M each.

    The break-down is as follows;

    The training programme for the Uganda National team-Uganda Cranes and U20/U23 starts this Friday at the StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo.

    With the Uganda Cranes set to take on Lesotho in the back to back AFCON 2019 Qualifiers, the head coach Sebastien Desabre is not leaving any stone unturned.

    Desabre has already summoned a 33 man squad for the Cranes while a 20 man squad comprising two U-17 players and a selection from the U-20/U-23 category will also have sessions before climaxing with a match between the two Squads on Sunday.

    The training will start on Friday morning with the local based players from the StarTimes Uganda Premier League forming the Uganda Cranes.

    Key points about the FUFA U-19 Juniors League 

    • Players under 19 to feature in the FUFA Juniors League
    • The League will be called ‘FUFA U-19 Juniors League’
    • 16 teams attached to the  clubs in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League are taking part
    • Fixtures have been released as the League starts this weekend

    FUFA Competitions Department has released the fixtures for 2018/2019 FUFA U-19 Juniors League. The latest development also comes on the back of confirmation that players under 19 years of age will allowed to take part in the league. The league will revert to the U-17 Category next season to tap another crop of players in that category.

    The Official Logo of the FUFA Juniors League launched in 2015.

    The league kicks off on Sunday 7th October 2018.

    The league involves 16 teams that are divided into two groups codenamed -Treble and Hat-trick-8 teams per group.

    The Treble group: KCCA FC SA, Police Armless Brigade, Maroons FC JT, URA FC JT, Vipers SC JT, Paidha Black Angles FC JT, Onduparaka FC JT and Ndejje University FC JT.

    The Hat Trick group: Tooro United FC JT, Express FC JT, SC Villa FC JT, Bright Stars FC JT, Nyamityobora FC JT, Mbarara City FC JT, BUL FC JT, and Kirinya Jinja SS FC JT.

    The league shall be played over 3 rounds but matches for the third round will be determined by FUFA Competition rules 2018/2019.

    Vipers SC JT emerged champions of 2017/2018 season after beating Onduparaka FC JT in the final at StarTimes Stadium Lugogo.

    Held on 30th September  2018

    Ahead of the 94th FUFA Ordinary General Assembly in Kabale,  one of the 8 Member Assoctions of FUFA- Eastern Region Football Associations held its  Assembly on 30th September 2018 at Executive Hotel in Bugiri.

    The Regional Assembly was chaired by the Association’s Chairperson Issa Musiwa, together with the Executive Committee members Charles Namakola (Busia), Hussein Mwangu (Tororo), Isaac Mpaanso (Buyende), Yusuf Twala (Kapchorwa), Andrew Wanyama (Namayongo), Zaituni Mutesi (Bugiri), Abdullah Kayiwa (Mbale) among other members.

    In his address to the Delegates, Musiwa appealed to FUFA to release funds a bit early to enable the region execute their  activities accordingly.

    ‘I am thrilled that we realised almost 95% of the quorum for this Assembly. However, we have had constant challenges with financial hardships thus  affect early planning for our projects’ said Issa Musiwa.

    FUFA was ably represented by Executive Committee Member Issa Magoola Kakaire who delivered the FUFA President’s message .

    ‘I am here in various capacities but allow me on behalf of FUFA President to convey his sincere message of great thanks and appreciation towards the development of the game of football’ noted Issa Magoola.

    ‘The President is way in Cairo for official CAF duties. He wants to empower all the 8 regions to run their activities independently, allow CEO submit reports of activities smoothly’ added Magoola.

    Uganda Kobs to face South Sudan in the AFCON U-23 Qualifiers

    The Uganda U-23 team (Kobs) has been drawn to play South Sudan in the AFCON Qualifiers with the first round matches taking place between 12thand 20th November. The overall winner over the two legs, will meet Tunisia in the second round between 18th and 26th March 2019. 13 countries have been handed byes into the 2nd round of the competition that has attracted 43 teams. Egypt will host the finals in 2019.

    Meanwhile 20 players have been summoned for a two day non-residential training on Friday and Saturday-with the composition of U20 and U23 players. Two U17 National team players have also been included. The Squad will be handled by Mathias Lule under the supervision of Uganda Cranes head coach Sebastien Desabre.

    Viane Ssekajugo’s late winner was the difference as Buganda edged past West Nile in the first leg of the FUFA DRUM final at Bishop SS,Mukono on Sunday.

    After squandering several chances earlier in the game, it was Ssekajugo who struck home deep into stoppage time to hand Buganda the advantage ahead of the return leg in 6th October 2018 in Arua.

    Buganda dominated proceedings right from the onset and made several efforts at goal. As early as the second minute, Allan Kayiwa almost gave the hosts the lead but lanky defender Rashid Toha made a timely save to deny the former.

    There was a penalty claim by Buganda in the 19th minute after a challenge on Ssekajugo by Filbert Obenchan but centre referee George Olemu waved for play on.

    Four minutes later, Kayiwa had another chance just outside the area but goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi parried the ball away.

    West Nile were forced to make an early change when midfielder Ibrahim Faizul limped off after sustaining an injury and his place was taken by Cromwell Rwothomio Abang who plays for Paidha Black Angels.

    Brian Umony had a chance for the visitors three minutes to the hour mark. His ferocious strike however went a few inches wide.

    Toha’s goal bound ball was instead headed away by teammate Villa Oromchan. Initially, Mustafa Kizza’s well curled free kick was saved by goalkeeper Nicholas Ssebwato and fell into Toha’s path.

    Buganda kept surging forward even after recess with Kayiwa and Ssekajugo troubling West Nile’s back line.

    The White Rhinos made more changes introducing 20 year old Ezra Bida and Feni Ali for Umony and Abel Eturude respectively.

    Buganda too made changes with Baker Buyala and Solomon Walusimbi coming on for Shafik Kagimu and Brian Majwega in that order.

    With two minutes added, Ssekajugo scored a late winner to send the home fans into wild celebrations.

    Walusimbi’s initial effort rattled off the base of the goal post but Ssekajugo was well stationed to fire into the top of the back of the net.

    West Nile and Buganda Provinces will compete in the final of the inaugural edition of the FUFA Drum tournament.
    The tournament that kicked off in February had 16 provinces take part but it is Buganda and West Nile that managed to reach the final.
    Below is the journey for either province right from the group stages;
    Buganda Province
    Buganda had a dismal start losing their opening game 1-0 to Kigezi at Masaka Recreation ground under coach Mutono Stephen who was shown the exit immediately.
    This was followed with a goalless draw away to Acholi province in one of the most watched games in the tournament.

    The first victory for Buganda under the stewardship of coach Alex Isabirye came against Lango away in Lira. Allan Kayiwa scored the lone goal of the game.
    However, Buganda lost the return leg to Lango 3-1 despite leading the game played at Bishop SS Mukono.
    In the penultimate group game, Buganda nicked a hard fought 1-0 win away to Kigezi to boost their chances of advancing to the knockout stage. Diminutive forward Viane Ssekajugo scored the all important goal.
    The final group game was against Acholi and Buganda needed maximum points to progress. Goalkeeper Nicholas Ssebwato converted a penalty in Mukono to guide Buganda to the quarterfinals.
    At the quarterfinal stage, Buganda which finished second in group B on ten points had to face group C leaders and neighbors Kampala province.
    Buganda hosted the first leg in Mukono and Shafik Kagimu’s first half penalty was the difference. The return leg at Wankulukuku ended in a one all draw thus helping Buganda to advance to the semifinals 2-1 on aggregate.
    In the semifinals, Buganda hosted the first leg against Bukedi a game they won 1-0 courtesy of Allan Kayiwa but Bukedi replied in similar currency winning 1-0 as well in Tororo and thus the winner had to be determined on kicks from the penalty mark.

    Buganda won the tense penalty shoot out 5-3 to reach the final.

    West Nile Road to the final
    West Nile began their campaign away to Karamoja and the game ended in a one all stalemate. This is one of the shocking results of the tournament.
    Alfred Leku scored for West Nile while Vitalis Tabu failed to convert a penalty and the home side levelled matters through Majid Ayop.

    The White Rhinos however recovered to win their second group game at home(Bar Okoro stadium in Zombo District) against Ankole  province. Rashid Toha and Fred Amaku scored in the 2-0 win.
    The next game also at home but played in Arua ended in a goalless draw against visiting Tooro Province.
    West Nile made a daunting trip to Fort Portal for the return leg  and a solid and saw them edge Tooro at Buhinga stadium courtesy of Alfred Leku lone goal.
    In one of their best performances, West Nile run riot past Karamoja at Green light stadium with a 5-1 win on match day five.
    Despite ending the game with a player less after goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi had been sent off, West Nile registered comfortable victory.
    Gadaffi Wahab struck a hat trick while Rashid Toha and Ivan Wani added a goal each. Victory meant West Nile had advanced to the quarterfinals with a game to spare.

    The final group game was away to Ankole and West Nile were condemned to their first loss. Despite leading the game 2-0 through Fred Amaku and Alfred Leku, Ankole staged a comeback to win the game 3-2.
    At the quarterfinal stage, West Nile that had topped group D faced off with group A runners up Bugisu and the former won the contest 2-0 on aggregate.

    Identical wins of 1-0 wins both at home and away helped West Nile to progress to the semifinals. Fred Amaku scored away in Mbale while youngster Ezra Bida scored the home game.
    The semifinal clash against Busoga ended goalless over the two legs but West Nile won the penalty shoot out 5-4 to storm the final.

    Buganda and West Nile tacticians have named players to feature in the 1st leg encounter of the FUFA Drum Final at Bishops Ground in Mukono on Sunday 30th September 2018.

    The maiden final will be played on a home and away format that will see Buganda Province host West Nile Province in the 1st leg.

    Buganda Province head coach Isabirye Alex Musongola named 20 players for the job.

    In his squad, Musongola included Onduparaka FC players  Goalkeeper Nicholas Sebwato, Vianne Sekajugo and Muhammad Hassan who missed the semifinal return leg against Bukedi Province in Tororo. KCCA FC striker Patrick Kaddu also returned to the list after missing the 2nd leg semifinal.

    Ethiopian based midfielder Yasser Mugerwa is not part of the squad since he returned to  Ethiopian side Fasil Kenama. He featured in the semifinal 1st leg and made the assist for Allan Kayiwa’s goal against Bukedi.

    KCCA FC midfielder Gift Ali will not feature for West Nile due to injury problems but Maroons FC player Agau Rashid replaces him in the squad.

    Gadafi Wahab and Ceaser Okhuti of Onduparaka FC were not summoned as they are nursing injuries.

    The FUFA Referees Standing Committee (FRSC) has released the officials to handle fixtures on match day one of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. 6 matches will be played on Friday while the other on Saturday. Mbarara City have not been considered in the fixtures after failing to meet the club licensing requirements for the venue to be used to host their matches. However they have since appealed and now await a decision from the FUFA Appeals Committee.

    The Uganda Cranes Head coach Sebastien Desabre has summoned a 33 man Squad for the AFCON Qualifier match between Uganda and Lesotho to be played on 13th October, 2018 at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

    The Squad has 16 foreign based players and the rest are stars from the Uganda Premier League with some coming from the National U-20 team.

    Local based players will start training on 5th October before the rest of the squad joins three days later for the residential camp ahead of the back to back ties against Lesotho to be played in a space of four days.

    The final squad of 24 players for the residential camp will be named by the head coach on 7th October, 2018.

    Crested Cranes Return Home After COSAFA Expedition

    The Uganda senior ladies national football team, the Crested Cranes safely returned home on Monday  from South Africa where they took part in the just concluded COSAFA Women’s Championship.
    The Crested Cranes touched down at Entebbe International Airport at 2:00pm and were welcomed by a delegation from FUFA led by 2nd Vice President Darius Mugoye.

    Mugoye lauded the team for a brilliant performance and indicated the future of women’s football in Uganda is bright.
    ‘I take this opportunity to welcome back our gallant team and thank them for a job well done.  The ladies showed great character and made the country proud. We are optimistic as FUFA that the future of women’s football is bright’ said Mugoye.
    Chris Kalibala, a FUFA Executive Committee member and Leader of Delegation thanked FUFA for developing women’s football.

    Head coach Faridah Bulega stated that the tournament has given her team several lessons and asserts the progress of the team is evident.
    ‘I want to first thank the Federation for availing us with this opportunity. Secondly to thank the players for the commitment and commendable performance throughout the tournament. I believe we have picked several lessons and I believe it is a positive progress for the team’ said Bulega
    On playing against teams like South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia that feature at tournaments like the Africa Women Cup of Nations, Bulega insinuated it was important to face such opponents.
    ‘We weighed ourselves against some of the best teams on the continent and I believe we benefited a lot and the team managed to show character in all the games’ added Bulega.

    Team Captain Tracy Jones Akiror shared similar sentiments with the coach insisting the tournament helped them improve as a team.
    ‘We played with commitment and thanks be to God for the performance. We managed to get a bronze medal. I believe we benefited  as a team,  competing against several teams and managing to defeat them’ staked Akiror.
    Ruth Aturo who was named the best goalkeeper  at the tournament  credited her performance to unity.
    ‘I am delighted about the achievement but it was not an individual effort.  It was a collective effort and I am happy that we managed to bring accolade home’ said Aturo.

    The team was later treated to a lucheon at Jevine Hotel, Rubaga before the players returned to their respective homes.
    Uganda emerged third after defeating Zambia in the third place playoff 1-0. The Crested Cranes played a total of five games,  winning three, drawing once and losing on one occasion.

    Uganda Premier League: Club Licensing status for 2018/19 season released

    The FUFA Secretariat has received the final Club Licensing status for the eligible clubs to compete in the Uganda Premier League season 2018/19.  Thus, the FUFA Club Licensing Committee (CLC) has qualified the clubs into three categories as below;

    Eight (8) clubs have been granted full season Licenses, Five (5) clubs will be issued Provisional Licenses while Three (3) Clubs are given up to Tuesday 25th September 2018 17hrs to submit an MOU with CLC approved Grounds (Home Match Venue) of their choice; failure of which will lead to non-issuance of license to compete and may lead to exclusion from the fixtures completely.

    The Club Licensing Committee operates on principles of confidentiality and therefore may not provide further details on specific cases and please note the list below is arranged alphabetically.

    Resolutions from the FUFA Excom Meeting: Refereeing Matters, Change of names for clubs

    The 18th FUFA Executive Committee Meeting held on 20th September, 2018 at FUFA House, Mengo passed decisions on key issues following requests submitted through the office of the FUFA CEO.

     

    Refereeing matters

    Women referees

    The FUFA Executive passed a resolution that the number of female referees at National level will be increased to create a bigger pool of officials to handle the FUFA Women Elite League starting with the 2018/2019 season.

    Only female referees will officiate the FUFA Women Elite League.

     

    FIFA referees list 2019

    The Executive also passed a resolution that the list for 2019 FIFA referees should be submitted to FIFA by end of September for approval and allocation of slots, by the world soccer governing body.

     

    Change of names for clubs

    The FUFA Executive granted 8 out of 9 clubs their requests to change names. A request for change of name by Eastland Football Club (from Eastern Region Men’s team) to Lifeline Sports Academy was rejected as the matter was referred back to the North East Region Football Association for further clarification

     

    The following clubs have been granted permission to change names as follows but Wakiso Giants will play their home matches in Eastern Region.

    FUFA Communications Manager Ahmed Hussein noted that all decisions passed take immediate effect and all stakeholders are required to follow them in accordance with the FUFA Statutes.
