CAF B Coaching Course Module Two Concludes at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru

The second module of the CAF B Coaching Course officially concluded today at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru. The course, which began on 9th June 2025, brought together 25 participants from various clubs across the country.

Speaking at the end of the session, FUFA Technical Director Ali Mwebe shared insights into the next phase of the programme.
“We are sending the coaches back to their respective clubs for internship. During this time, they will implement tasks assigned by the course instructors. After the 60-day internship period, the coaches will return to Njeru for the fourth and fifth modules, each comprising 40 hours of contact time with instructors,” Mwebe explained.

He further outlined that the final stage of the course will involve both theoretical and practical examinations.

‘The structure of this course is comprehensive. For instance, today the coaches were introduced to the use of Catapult technology—a key tool in modern football performance analysis.’

Mwebe also commended the FUFA leadership for prioritising sports science.

‘The FUFA President and Executive have invested heavily in sports science, which is a central component of the FUFA Technical Master Plan. However, it’s important that our elite coaches are educated on how to interpret and apply the data collected through such technology. This integration of science and technical knowledge is essential to producing the kind of coaches our country needs.’

The CAF B Coaching Course is part of FUFA’s broader strategy to elevate the standards of football through the structured development of coaches, ensuring that players—both girls and boys—receive proper training at all levels.

FUFA President Magogo hails URA FC’s historic FIFA recognition

FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim has extended his heartfelt congratulations to URA FC following the club’s historic recognition by FIFA for submitting a winning strategic plan proposal.

This achievement comes after URA FC participated in the FIFA Club Management and Professionalisation Programme held at Golden Tulip in Kampala, 2024, where they were certified by both FUFA and FIFA alongside other Ugandan clubs in the Uganda Premier League.

As part of the programme, each participating club was required to submit a strategic plan proposal in a particular area of interest. URA FC’s proposal stood out among dozens from clubs around the world, earning them a spot among the programme’s winners.

FIFA’s communication, sent by Picalló Aguilar Marcos, FIFA Senior Professional Football Manager and Development, to URA FC CEO Allan Munaaba, read in part:

‘We are pleased to announce the two winning submissions: ASEC Mimosas (Côte d’Ivoire) and URA FC (Uganda). We will be contacting the winning clubs shortly to coordinate their invitation to our upcoming Club Management Network Session in New York.’

As winners, URA FC will receive support, as determined by FIFA, to implement their approved strategic plan. This support will enable the club to further develop its professional capabilities and drive growth.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), President Magogo shared his pride in the Tax Collectors, writing: ‘Congratulations, @URAFC_Official, for the massive achievement. I am very proud of you.’

He added, ‘This achievement is a testament to URA FC’s dedication and commitment to excellence. We are thrilled that they will represent Ugandan football on the global stage.’

URA FC CEO Allan Munaaba expressed gratitude for the recognition.
‘We are incredibly grateful to the Government of Uganda and the Commissioner General, URA FC’s Patron, for their continued support to URA FC activities. A special thank you goes to the FUFA President for his tireless work in advancing professionalisation of club football in Uganda. This award is dedicated to our current and former players, coaches, executives, and the taxpayers for their invaluable support.’

The local football governing body notes that this accolade is not only a win for URA FC but also a proud moment for Ugandan football, further emphasizing FUFA’s ongoing efforts to raise professional standards within local clubs.

URA FC’s winning strategic proposal focused on nurturing talent for sustainable development, with a specific emphasis on developing players from grassroots to life after football, achieving governance, business and sport pyramid goals through balancing four perspectives; financial, internal processes, stakeholders, learning and growth.

  • Uganda Women’s National Team Head Coach Sheryl Botes Applauds Players Despite Loss to Kenya

Uganda Women’s National Team Head Coach Sheryl Botes Applauds Players Despite Loss to Kenya

Uganda women’s national team head coach Sheryl Botes has praised her players despite losing to Kenya.

In a CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship match played on Wednesday evening at the Azam Complex, the Crested Cranes were beaten 4–0. However, Coach Botes said her players gave their all but were outmatched by the Kenyans both physically and tactically.

‘We had four chances in the first half that could have made things more difficult for Kenya, but after conceding the first two goals, the girls lost confidence. The Kenyans were physically stronger and taller than our girls, which is why they resorted to long balls, something that wasn’t part of our game plan.’

This was Uganda’s third game of the tournament, with one remaining fixture against hosts Tanzania. Coach Botes noted that her players would need to regain their confidence ahead of the final group match.

‘I have seen Tanzania today, they have some tall players, so we will need to keep the ball on the ground to avoid competing for aerial balls.’

  • Crested Cranes Eye Victory Against Kenya After Dominant Win Over South Sudan

Crested Cranes Eye Victory Against Kenya After Dominant Win Over South Sudan

The Uganda women’s national team (Crested Cranes) will be back in action tomorrow against Kenya’s Harambee Scarlets in their third game of the CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship taking place in Tanzania.

The match will kick off at 7:00pm at the Azam Complex, and the Crested Cranes will be riding on the momentum of their previous 5–0 win against South Sudan.

The team held their final training session this morning at KMC Complex. Afterwards, head coach Sheryl Botes acknowledged Kenya’s strength, saying that while Kenya has a good team determined to win, she still believes in her players.

‘I watched their game against Burundi and I could see the maturity in the team, the strength on the wings, and how well they build from the back. It is going to be a tough match for us, but I believe in our team, in the potential and quality we have. We are really looking forward to the match’

Coach Botes also commented on playing styles, comparing possession-based football to the long-ball approach common in East Africa.

‘Where I come from, we believe in possession football. I am trying to teach our players that if we choose to go long, it must be for a purpose,’ Botes added.

Forward Jovia Nakagolo expressed her gratitude to the coaches for giving her a national team call-up and the chance to play in the first two games, even though she hasn’t yet met their expectations.

‘I am okay as a player and all my teammates are doing well. I thank my coaches for the national team call-up and for giving me playing time. I haven’t given them enough yet, but I am still pushing myself to score at least one goal in the remaining two games.’

  • Introducing the new FUFA Big League Trophy

Introducing the new FUFA Big League Trophy

The FUFA Big League Trophy has a rich story behind it, reflecting the spirit of competition and Uganda’s natural heritage.
The trophy is designed to symbolise the strength and unity of teams competing in the league, drawing inspiration from the buffalo, a wild creature known for its tenacity and collective strength.

The design features handles shaped like buffalo horns, representing defence, power, and unity. The four-tier base takes cues from the buffalo’s body parts-the mouth and nostrils, while the trunk and upper layers resemble the forehead and nose bridge. Standing at 455mm tall, the new FUFA Big League Trophy is made in silver, representing prestige and purity.

FUFA Communications Director Ahmed Hussein noted that the new design embodies the true spirit of competition and perseverance in the FUFA Big League, depicting the strength of each team and the famous wild creature, the buffalo. The trophy’s outline is composed of three main sections, with the top bulb gently curving upward and the middle trunk connecting the top and base through a sleek multi-level design.

The base is built with four slightly curving tiers, creating a well-built foundation, a metaphor for the league’s role in supporting football growth in Uganda.

The trophy’s handles are attached between the top bulb and the offset trunk tier, reinforcing the buffalo horn imagery while blending seamlessly with the body.

  • Crested Cranes Secure 5-0 Win Over South Sudan as Kabene Scores Hattrick

Crested Cranes Secure 5-0 Win Over South Sudan as Kabene Scores Hattrick

The Uganda women’s national team, the Crested Cranes, bounced back from their opening loss to Burundi with a commanding 5–0 victory over South Sudan in their second game of the ongoing CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship in Tanzania.

After losing to Burundi in the first match, the Crested Cranes responded in style on Sunday evening at the Azam Complex.

Uganda’s goals came in the first half, with Sylvia Kabene netting a hat-trick, while Shamirah Nalugya and Zainah Namuleme also found the back of the net. Kabene’s performance earned her the Woman of the Match award.

Crested Cranes head coach Sheryl Botes said the team had to win this game and by a large margin to keep their hopes in the tournament alive.

‘Today’s win was really important for us to stay in the tournament. We knew we had to score many goals, so we changed the formation by bringing in two strikers to reduce pressure on the midfield. We had analysed South Sudan’s game against Tanzania and noticed their defensive line sits high and leaves space behind, so we planned to exploit that,’ Botes explained.

Kabene, who scored a hat-trick, credited her teammates for their teamwork and support.

‘I thank the Almighty for this win. I managed to score three goals and was named Woman of the Match. I appreciate my teammates for their teamwork and my coach for giving me the opportunity to play today,’ she said.

‘As I said earlier, if I am given a chance on the national team, I will make the most of it and that’s what I did today. All I want is to make myself proud and make Busoga proud by scoring more goals for the Crested Cranes,” Kabene added.

Crested Cranes starting line-up vs South Sudan: Lillian Nakiirya (GK), Jolly Kobusingye, Desire Katisi Natooro, Zainah Namuleme (C), Margaret Kunihira, Jovia Nakagolo, Shamirah Nalugya, Docus Lwalisa, Jamilah Nabulime, Sylvia Kabene, and Zainah Nandede.

FUFA Extends Invitation to Parliament of Uganda to visit Kadiba

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has extended an invitation to the Parliament of Uganda to visit the newly constructed Kadiba Stadium and other key football facilities from June 16th to 18th, 2025. This visit is part of FUFA’s periodical review of infrastructure used by its members during various competitions throughout the season.

Given Parliament’s strong advocacy for increased funding to sports, this visit will further strengthen collaboration between FUFA and the legislative body. The legislators will tour Kadiba Stadium, Lugazi Stadium, Mutesa II Stadium Wankulukuku, and the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.

A thrilling football match between FUFA Presidents’ XI and the Parliament of Uganda Football Team will climax the activities. FUFA Communications Director Ahmed Hussein noted, ‘This initiative promotes football development and advocates for increased access to the sport for all Ugandans.’

The match promises excitement, featuring President’s XI stars like Hassan Mubiru, Hakim Magumba, Alex Isabirye, and Tony Mawejje, against Parliament’s team coached by former Uganda Cranes defender Tom Lwanga.

Crested Cranes Fall to Burundi in CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship 2025 Opener

The Uganda women’s national team, the Crested Cranes, suffered a 1–0 defeat to Burundi in their opening match of the CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship held on Friday 13th June 2025 at the Azam Complex.

The first half ended goalless, but in the 76th minute, Esperance Habonimana netted the only goal of the match to secure victory for Burundi.

Crested Cranes head coach, Sheryl Botes, made several changes during the match. Nakasi Latifah, Nabulime Jamila, Docus Lwalisa and Nakagolo Jovia were replaced by Sylvia Kabene, Sumayaha Nabuto, Brenda Munyana and Shakirah Nankwanga. However, the substitutions failed to produce an equaliser.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Coach Botes expressed her disappointment with the result.

‘We didn’t expect this outcome—we came looking for a win,’ she said. ‘I still believe we were the better team on the day and created good goal-scoring opportunities.’

Botes confirmed that Saturday would be a rest day for the team, ahead of their second group match against South Sudan on Sunday.

‘Our next game is against South Sudan, and we have to pick up the pieces. We must win all our remaining matches. I believe in this team—it can hold possession, build from the back, play through the lines, switch play, and press high,’ she added.

The Crested Cranes will face South Sudan on Sunday, 15th June, at 7:00 PM.

CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship 2025: Crested Cranes Coach Botes Says a Win Will Boost Players’ Confidence

The Uganda women’s national team, the Crested Cranes, will begin their CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship title defence against 2022 runners-up Burundi today at 4:00 p.m. at the Azam Complex in Tanzania.

Coach Sheryl Botes said that although Uganda has consistently defeated Burundi in previous meetings, football teams continue to improve, and that is why she has prepared her team thoroughly for the opening match—typically the most challenging for Uganda.

“I believe we are going to beat Burundi. I believe in my players. I have watched all of them play in the FUFA Women Super League. I know the first game is always difficult for Uganda, but our toughest opponents are Kenya and Tanzania,” said Coach Botes.

She also noted that the team has focused on various aspects during their three to four days of training, particularly confidence and mental strength.

“I am positive, and the players are positive. We have worked on team unity, the mental aspect, confidence, and self-belief,” she added.

Coach Botes called on all Ugandans to support the Crested Cranes, saying the players are determined to put smiles on their supporters’ faces.

Namuleme Zainah, the Crested Cranes captain, said the team’s target is to win tomorrow’s match in order to keep their title defence on track.

“We are the defending champions of this tournament, so we need to win tomorrow’s game. But this can only be achieved if we put in a strong performance—not just for ourselves, but for all Ugandans,” said Zainah.

  • FUFA Talent ID Framework Rollout Gathers Pace, Three Regions Covered So Far

FUFA Talent ID Framework Rollout Gathers Pace, Three Regions Covered So Far

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) is making concerted efforts to ensure that football in Uganda develops in leaps and bounds. With a clear vision to become Africa’s leading footballing nation both on and off the pitch, FUFA has introduced tailor-made structures to achieve this ambitious goal.

In 2023, FUFA launched the Technical Master Plan (TMP), a comprehensive blueprint covering every stage of a footballer’s life — from grassroots to elite and professional levels, and even life after football.

One of the cornerstones of the TMP is the Talent Identification Framework, which focuses on charting a structured development pathway for young players aiming to break into elite football.

This initiative forms part of FUFA’s integration of FIFA’s Talent Development Schemes (TDS), a high-performance global football development programme that emerged from FIFA’s 2020 analysis of the global football talent ecosystem. The framework is designed to create an elite youth football environment under the theme “Giving Every Talent a Chance”.

FIFA, through its High-Performance Unit under the leadership of Arsène Wenger, Chief of Global Football Development, continues to support the initiative with educational resources, expert consultancy, and financial backing.

Following the launch of the framework, FUFA trained 24 scouts from its eight administrative regions in October last year. Since then, implementation has begun in earnest, starting with the North East region in Soroti City, followed by the Northern Region in Lira City, and most recently, the Eastern Region at Ssaza Grounds in Iganga Town.

To date, a total of 641 young players have participated in the talent identification exercise across these three regions. With guidance from the trained scouts, players undergo competitive trials, after which those who demonstrate promise are selected and categorised by age and gender.

The successful players are then entered into an online portal and considered for enrolment into Regional Centres of Football Excellence, which were established last year. At these centres, they undergo further evaluation before the most outstanding talents are selected for the National Football Academy.

The next phase of the programme resumes this weekend in the Kampala Region at Old Kampala Secondary School, before moving to the remaining regions — Western, West Nile, Buganda, and Kitara.

Jerome Katende, FUFA’s Chief Scout, expressed optimism about the programme’s progress.

“We have so far covered three regions, and I’m extremely impressed with the turnout and the level of talent we’ve seen. I believe that by the end of this exercise, we will have covered the entire country and unearthed remarkable talent,” he said.

FUFA Executive Committee members Dan Obote (Northern Region) and Richard Ochom (North East Region) echoed Katende’s sentiments, describing the initiative as a significant step towards the sustainable development of football in Uganda.

Crested Cranes Hold Final Training at Namboole, Ready for Departure to CECAFA Championship

The Uganda Women’s National Football Team, the Crested Cranes, held their final training session this morning at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, as they prepare for the upcoming CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship in Tanzania, which runs from 12th to 21st June 2025.

The team entered residential camp at FUFA Hotel in Kisaasi on Sunday, 8th June, and has had only two days of intensive training before their departure this afternoon.

Speaking after the session, head coach Sheryl Botes expressed her excitement and confidence in the squad. While highlighting the experience of several players, she singled out debutant Jovia Nakagolo as one to watch.

“I have seen all of you play on the national teams — Shamira Nalugya, Zainah Nandede, Daisy Nakaziro — you have more experience than the rest, so I’m sure you will support everyone,” Botes told her players. “I can’t wait to see Jovia Nakagolo score goals in Tanzania. It’s her first time on the national team and I’m really excited.”

Coach Botes named a 20-player squad for the regional tournament. Most of the players honoured the call-up, with two notable changes: Resty Kobusobozi, who is sitting for an examination on 14th June, has been replaced by Asiimwe Zida, while Nulu Nakyaze Babirye makes way for experienced goalkeeper Ruth Aturo.

The squad brings together a mix of youth and experience, with most players featuring in the domestic league. Only two players, Margret Kunihira and Ruth Aturo, ply their trade outside Uganda.

The Crested Cranes are scheduled to depart Entebbe International Airport at 3:00 PM today aboard Uganda Airlines.

Coach Botes urged the players to embrace teamwork and resilience:

“Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Celebrate your teammates’ successes and lift them up when they fall short.”

Among the younger players on the squad is Sylvia Kabene, who shared her dreams of emulating her idols on the pitch.

“If given an opportunity, I want to score goals just like Fazila Ikwaput and Zainah Nandede,” Kabene said with a smile.

Uganda Cranes Put up improved performance in Marrakech stalemate with The Gambia

Uganda Cranes showed character and resilience to hold The Gambia Scorpions to a 1-1 draw in an international friendly match held at the Stade de Marrakech Annexe pitch on Monday, 9th June 2025.

Following a tough 3-0 defeat to Cameroon in their first build-up match on Friday, head coach Paul Joseph Put made several tactical changes to the starting lineup, which resulted in a more spirited and organized Cranes display against a familiar face, former Uganda head coach Jonathan McKinstry, now in charge of The Gambia.

The Cranes opened the scoring midway through the first half. Vardar Skopje winger Rogers Kassim Mato rose highest to nod home a beautifully curled corner by Patrick Jonah Kakande in the 25th minute, giving Uganda a deserved lead.

The Gambia came close to equalizing ten minutes later when a powerful effort struck the woodwork, with goalkeeper Isima Watenga already beaten. Their persistence eventually paid off when forward Alasana Manneh of Hibernian FC calmly slotted home a penalty, sending Watenga the wrong way to level matters before halftime.

Disaster struck for Uganda shortly after the break when captain and goalkeeper Isima Watenga sustained a knee injury and had to be stretchered off. Joel Mutakubwa came on in the 52nd minute to replace him and managed the remainder of the game confidently.

Coach Put introduced several fresh legs in the second half, including defenders Hilary Mukundane and Enock Ssebagala, and attacking options Travis Mutyaba, Denis Omedi, and Shafik Nana Kwikiriza. The youthful substitutions added more energy and creativity, with Omedi and Allan Oyirwoth both going close to restoring Uganda’s lead late in the game.

The result will give the Uganda Cranes coaching team encouragement as they continue preparations for the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers. The tactical discipline, defensive organization, and increased attacking intent were key improvements from their previous outing.

    Uganda Cranes Starting XI:
Isima Watenga (G.K, Captain), Kenneth Semakula, Isaac Muleme, Jordan Obita, Toby Sibbick, Bobosi Byaruhanga, Allan Oyirwoth, Abdu Karim Watambala, Arafat Usama, Rogers Kassim Mato, Patrick Jonah Kakande

    Substitutes Used:
Joel Mutakubwa (G.K), Hilary Mukundane, Travis Mutyaba, Denis Omedi, Shafik Nana Kwikiriza, Enock Ssebagala

The course is organised by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) in conjunction with CAF and has brought together 25 participants – mainly from first, second and third division leagues.

The coaches are expected to complete the course after three phases of intensive training that will stretch across a period of four months, and this will provide each participant a minimum of 200 hours of learning.

In the first phase, the participants will learn – planning and preparing training sessions, delivering a training session, developing a coaching philosophy, coach-coaching, understanding the game, offensive principles of play, defensive principles of play, team organisation and coaching methodology.

CAF instructors – Jackson Nyima and Douglas Bamweyana are facilitating phase one of the course. They will be joined by several CAF instructors at the latter stages of the training.

This program is strategically in line with FUFA’s Technical Master Plan (TMT) 2023-2030 which doesn’t only aim at nurturing elite youth football for boys and girls, but also caters for coach education.

    Speaking after the commencement of the course, FUFA Education Manager – Jackson Nyima said;

“I am here to inform the entire nation that we have started the CAF B Diploma Coaching Course, and we have registered 25 participants.”

“This program started with a pre-entry exercise that was carried out two weeks ago where we received 70 applications. It’s from those applicants that we picked the twenty-five who met the minimum requirements that we wanted.”

“The reason why we have embarked on this course is to make sure we implement what is in the Technical Master Plan where coach education is also catered for. I believe that the coaches who are here are very passionate, and ofcourse they are all active as they’re attached to clubs.”

“We shall be taking them through the practical and theory sessions of coaching for all their time here.”

“The course will take a minimum of 200 hours. There will be assessment of each and every participant, and by the end of the day, we will get the best coaches.”
