Co-hosts Uganda now know their complete list of Group C opponents for the upcoming TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, set to take place from 2nd to 30th August 2025 across Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Following the conclusion of the final qualification round, Group C has officially been confirmed to include: Uganda (Hosts) Niger Guinea Algeria South Africa
The final two teams to join the group Algeria and South Africa secured their spots in dramatic fashion over the weekend. Algeria sealed qualification with a commanding 3-0 second-leg win over The Gambia, following a goalless draw in the first leg. The North Africans return to the CHAN finals with a 3-0 aggregate victory, signalling their intent ahead of the tournament.
South Africa, on the other hand, showed resilience by overturning a 1-0 first-leg loss to Malawi. The Bafana Bafana won 2-0 in the return leg to advance 2-1 on aggregate and mark their return to CHAN with renewed ambition.
The addition of these two continental heavyweights makes Group C one of the most competitive pools of the tournament. Uganda will benefit from home support but face stiff competition from well-established sides like Guinea, Algeria, and South Africa.
This will be Uganda’s seventh appearance at the CHAN finals. The Cranes will be hoping to make history by advancing past the group stage for the first time, inspired by passionate home crowds and a deep connection to the local terrain.
The CHAN tournament exclusively features players active in their respective domestic leagues, offering a unique opportunity for emerging talent to shine on the continental stage.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has announced pivotal amendments to the Men’s and Women’s Club Licensing Regulations, taking effect from the 2025/2026 football season. These changes are part of the Federation’s broader commitment to the implementation of its Club Licensing System and the Technical Master Plan aimed at raising standards across Ugandan football.
Following a series of capacity-building programmes to boost the quality and quantity of football coaches and administrators in the country, FUFA has revised several provisions under the Administration and Personnel and Sporting Criteria of the licensing regulations.
Starting with the 2025/2026 season:
Uganda Premier League (UPL) clubs must appoint Head Coaches with a minimum of a CAF A Coaching Diploma.
FUFA Big League (FBL) clubs are now required to have Head Coaches with at least a CAF B Coaching Diploma.
For the FUFA Women Super League (FWSL), only coaches holding a CAF B Coaching Diploma will be eligible for head coach roles.
In a move to professionalise club management:
UPL clubs must contract CEOs with a minimum FAMACO III certificate.
CEOs in both the FWSL and the FBL must hold a minimum of a FAMACO II certificate.
Another landmark change under the sporting criteria mandates that:
All UPL clubs must operate a women’s football team, competing in either the FUFA Women Super League or the FUFA Women Elite League.
Clubs already operating women’s teams must ensure their participation in official FUFA competitions.
Additionally, in line with FUFA Circular No. 1189, all FWSL clubs must be affiliated to an active men’s football club in the Uganda Premier League, FUFA Big League, or the Regional League from the 2025/2026 season onward.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has officially released new regulations governing football academies in Uganda. In a landmark decision communicated through Circular No. 1199, FUFA has de-registered all existing academies and instituted a new registration framework that aligns with the recently enacted National Sports Act, 2023.
The reform aims to standardize the operations of football academies and ensure alignment with national legislation. Specifically, Part VII, Section 50(2) of the National Sports Act requires that any person intending to operate a sports academy must obtain a license from the National Council of Sports (NCS), subject to approval by the respective national sports federation — in this case, FUFA.
Key Highlights of the New Regulations:
Mandatory Licensing: All football academies must now be licensed by the NCS, based on FUFA’s recommendation. This process ensures that academies meet both national and federation-level standards.
De-registration of Existing Academies: Effective immediately, all previously registered academies are no longer recognized. These academies must now reapply under the new guidelines.
Biannual Registration Windows: FUFA has introduced two registration periods every year. Window 1 runs from 1st–31st January and Window 2 from 1st-31st July. The next available application window is set for July 2025.
Licensing Tiers: New licenses will be issued under a tiered classification system (A to D), valid for two years. The classification depends on criteria such as infrastructure, governance, administration, sporting performance, and financial stability.
Application Requirements: Interested academies must submit a completed application form, proof of payment for the application fee (as per Statutory Instrument No. 24 of 2025), a valid membership certificate from the Uganda Youth Football Association (UYFA) and a detailed list of players and coaches.
Compliance Clause: As stipulated in Regulation 29(2) of the National Sports Regulations 2025, FUFA will not issue recommendations for licensing unless the academy fully complies with its internal regulations.
Application guidelines and relevant documentation will be released at least 30 days before the start of each registration window.
Football stakeholders and academy operators are urged to thoroughly review the FUFA Football Academies Regulations 2025 and prepare accordingly.

KCCA FC and Vipers SC took significant steps toward reaching the 2025 Stanbic Uganda Cup final after securing crucial first-leg victories in their respective semi-final clashes.
At the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo, 10-time Uganda Cup winners KCCA FC cruised to a 3-0 win over Big League side Kataka FC. The Kasasiro Boys were dominant from kickoff, with goals from Emmanuel Anyama who bagged a brace and Ashraf Mugume putting them firmly in the driving seat ahead of the return leg on May 18.
Anyama opened the scoring just before halftime, capping off a well-worked team move. He added his second shortly after the break with a thunderous strike from outside the box. Mugume later punished a defensive lapse to seal the third, giving KCCA a commanding cushion.
Kataka, who had previously knocked out top-tier teams URA FC and Police FC via penalty shootouts, found themselves overwhelmed by KCCA’s superior pace, pressing, and technical quality.
In the other semi-final encounter played earlier at St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende, defending champions Kitara FC fell 1-0 to hosts Vipers SC. Substitute Yunus Junior Sentamu emerged the hero with a sensational 94th-minute volley, breaking the deadlock in dramatic fashion.
The match had been a tense and physical affair, with both sides locked in a midfield battle and chances hard to come by. Kitara’s Patrick Kaddu came closest in regulation time, smashing the crossbar in the first half.
The decisive second legs will be played over the weekend of May 17, with both finalists set to be determined ahead of the grand finale at the newly completed FUFA Kadiba Stadium in Kampala.

I also want to thank the Government of Uganda, headed by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Uganda, and the Minister in charge of Education and Sports and the entire Government apparatus for the support they give us.
I want to thank the parents, because we are talking about players who are below 17 years of age, who are still under parental control, that the parents have allowed us to have the children during school time, to be able to represent their Country.

Special thanks
The media, for the reporting, for being able to report what has been happening. Thank you so much for doing your job.
The fans, I am told there were fans as early as 5 o’clock in the morning at Entebbe International airport, waiting for the team. Thank you so much. You give us the fuel to run the game.
Let me extend special thanks to Mr. Ali Semyalo. He is not here. He is a former national team and Express FC player, but on his own cost, travelled to Morocco and stayed with the team throughout.
Congratulatory messages from the President, First Lady
I want to bring you congratulatory messages from His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Uganda, and Mama, the Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni. Yesterday (On Monday) we were in a meeting about AFCON and CHAN, and this is what they said. That they congratulate you very much and it was my duty to deliver this message.
FUFA’s Strategic Planning
As a Federation, this has been a strategy. You know everything is done by strategy. There are very many people who have said, these people are lucky. Yes, we are lucky. But luck loves those who plan, because whatever we are doing and seeing today, is planned.
Youth football development initiatives
We sit in the boardroom to come up with a strategy. For us to be able to succeed at the highest level, we need to deliberately make intentions about youth football in Uganda.
We started the FUFA U17 Juniors League, and many naysayers thought that it cannot happen, it’s not practical. But since 2015, when we launched the FUFA U17 Juniors League, there has been a lot of success already. We have also entered all our teams for available international competitions by CECAFA, CAF and FIFA.
Importance of early identification and development
If you do not play football at the right time, there is no accident that later you will come up and play football. It is no longer possible. We have also been able to introduce different competitions. I mentioned the FUFA U17 Juniors League, but we have also introduced FUFA Odilo for Primary Schools. The countries we look at and admire, they have done this for very many years.
Player development programmes
These competitions we are talking about, are competitions that we have not been engaged in. But they have been around. So, in 2015, we deliberately decided to invest in youth football. We have players who have come through and observed their art. In the FUFA Tv Cup, we had Owino and Magogo Shakur. There have also been products of the Odilo Cup that we started for the primary schools.
Technical Master Plan (TMP)
We have also launched the technical master plan… This is very, very intentional. And I am insisting on being intentional. The technical master plan is looking at the path of the player. For you to be able to get that player to the top, that player must be identified.
The FUFA Technical Master Plan is the foundation to help develop and improve the quality of football on the field with a specific mission to;

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) President, Hon. Hon. Magogo made these remarks during a welcome reception for the Uganda U17 team at Sheraton Hotel, following their historic qualification to the FIFA World Cup U17 in Qatar.
The FUFA President also extended his appreciation to the entire team for creating history in Ugandan football.
‘The coach and your entire team, this is your moment to enjoy but also for Ugandans’ noted Hon. Magogo with a beaming smile during his address.
The FUFA President took a moment to applaud the players for their discipline, determination, and maturity, emphasizing that their achievement was a result of years of hard work. He thanked the parents and schools for supporting the players, especially for allowing them to be part of the team during the academic term.
“We’re talking about players under the age of 17, still under parental care, and we appreciate that their guardians allowed them to represent their country. The schools also gave these children the opportunity to express their talent—thank you.”
He further acknowledged the role of academies and clubs in nurturing young players, highlighting that their development journey began many years ago, often from the age of 10 or 11.
Hon. Magogo highlighted FUFA’s efforts to nurture young football talent through initiatives like the double licensing system that allows players under 21 to participate in multiple leagues, gaining more playing time and exposure to increase their chances of getting signed by top clubs, the FUFA U17 Juniors League-founded in 2015 and has produced talented players like Rogers Mato, Muhammed Shaban, Bobosi Byaruhanga, Travis Mutyaba, Allan Okello, Gavin Kizito and Kenneth Ssemakula, who have gone on to play for the Uganda Cranes national senior team, the FUFA Tv Cup launched in 2023, a tournament that has provided additional opportunities for young players to develop their skills in the traditional schools in Uganda and the Pan African Schools Championships-a competition supporting the youth football strategy, which was further bolstered by Odilo in 2019 for the schools.
The FUFA President cited examples of successful players who have come through FUFA’s programmes including Joseph Langol, Simon Wanyama, Shakur Magogo, Lukyamuzi Ashraf, Gavin Kizito, John Brian Owino and Thomas Ogema.
The FUFA President outlined the federation’s vision for Ugandan football, centred around developing young talent through the FUFA Technical Master Plan, which includes scouts in every district and a web-based application to track player development, improving sports infrastructure with government support, FUFA aims to enhance football facilities and promote the sport nationwide.
Hon. Magogo emphasised the importance of strategic planning, saying;
‘FUFA has been strategic with its plans, and you cannot say we just got lucky. Luck finds those who have a strategy and plans’
The Uganda U17 team’s qualification for the FIFA World Cup U17 marks a significant milestone for Ugandan football.
FUFA’s initiatives and government support have contributed to this success and the organisation is poised to continue developing young talent and improving sports infrastructure.
