Uganda Cubs Seek Redemption Against Tanzania in Crucial U17 AFCON Clash

Uganda and Tanzania will be eager to bounce back when they face off in a decisive Group A encounter at the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 today at 8 PM EAT at El Bachir Stadium, Mohammedia. Both teams come into this match after suffering heavy defeats in their opening fixtures. Uganda fell 5-0 to hosts Morocco, while Tanzania lost 4-1 to Zambia. With both sides chasing their first points of the tournament, this match carries significant weight.

Ssenyondo: “We Have No Other Chance Apart from Now”

Uganda Cubs head coach Brian Ssenyondo recognizes the importance of the clash, labeling it a “derby” due to the regional rivalry between the two teams. “They are our rivals, and we both lost our first games. This makes the match very difficult, but we have prepared well over the past days to ensure we present ourselves strongly against Tanzania. We have no other chance apart from tomorrow, and I believe we shall play very well to get maximum points,” said Ssenyondo.

Despite some injury concerns in the squad, he remains hopeful that his team can deliver. “We have a few injury concerns from our previous game, like Bogere, Magala, Torach, and Lukyamuzi, and we are waiting for the doctors’ final report,” he added.

Following the heavy loss to Morocco, Ssenyondo acknowledges the disappointment among fans but is confident the team will respond. “I know fans back home are disappointed with the previous result, and we are also disappointed, but football gives you another chance. We believe we shall make things right against Tanzania because our target is to qualify for the World Cup.”

    Players Ready to Step Up

Uganda forward James Bogere and midfielder Ethan Oyedele share their coach’s optimism, vowing to fight for a positive result. Bogere, who has previously faced Tanzania, stressed the importance of the right mentality. “We know Tanzania very well, having played against them twice recently. They are a good side, but we have to come with the right mentality and character. The boys are very motivated, and they know what this match means to us. As a player, I know what I am capable of doing, and I believe against Tanzania, I can do it.”

Oyedele echoed similar sentiments, determined to use this match as an opportunity for redemption. “The result against Morocco isn’t something we expected, and it left us disappointed, but we have a chance to redeem ourselves against Tanzania. We know it won’t be easy, but we have to fight to achieve our dream of qualifying for the World Cup.”

This will be the second meeting between Uganda and Tanzania at the U-17 AFCON finals. Their first encounter came in 2019, when Uganda defeated Tanzania 3-0 in Dar es Salaam, although both teams failed to progress past the group stage. Most recently, the two sides met in the qualifiers for Morocco 2025, drawing 1-1 in the group stage before Uganda won 2-1 in the final. Notably, Tanzania took the lead in both matches but failed to hold on.

2025 AFCON U17: Uganda Cubs fall to Morocco in opener

Uganda Cubs endured a tough start to their 2025 Total Energies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, falling 5-0 to hosts Morocco at El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia on Sunday night.

Despite the defeat, the young Ugandan side showed resilience and flashes of promise as they gained vital experience on the big stage.

Facing a highly clinical Moroccan side, Uganda found themselves trailing early when Ilies Belmokhtar, the eventual player of the match, opened the scoring in the 3rd minute. Morocco continued their aggressive start, with Aït Cheikh doubling the lead five minutes later with a bullet header from Abdellah Ouazane’s pinpoint cross.

The Cubs faced further adversity when a VAR-reviewed penalty in the 23rd minute saw Real Betis forward Ziyad Baha convert from the spot, increasing Morocco’s lead to three. The home side maintained their attacking momentum, with Belmokhtar adding his second goal of the night before the half-hour mark, making it 4-0 at halftime.

Despite the scoreline, Uganda returned with a more composed approach in the second half, trying to contain Morocco’s relentless attack. They showed improved defensive organization and moments of offensive intent. However, substitute El Aoud set up Baha for his second and Morocco’s final goal in the 71st minute, sealing the hosts’ emphatic victory.

Among those in attendance was Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) president Hon. Moses Magogo Hassim, who watched as Uganda Cubs fought hard against a well-drilled Moroccan side. The CECAFA champions will now shift focus to their crucial next match against regional rivals Tanzania on April 3rd, where victory will be key in keeping their FIFA U-17 World Cup qualification hopes alive.

Matchday 16 of the Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League is here with six exciting fixtures evenly distributed on Saturday and Sunday and a lot at stake for the different clubs as we get into the season’s closing stages.

Table leaders Kampala Queens will be hoping to further bolster their title charge by winning against Rines SS WFC who they are hosting at the MTN Omondi stadium on Saturday morning. Unbeaten in 15 matches, the ‘Queens of Soccer’ will also be playing to keep their flawless record intact. Even if they are to do it, they are expected to find it easy against a very stubborn side that has struggled to get results in second round.

Just one point separates Makerere University WFC in 8th on 16 points and She Corporates in 9th on 15 points two sides that are desperately in need of points to strengthen their position on the league table. A win for the hosts will see them leapfrog Rines into 7th if they fail to pick at least a point from Kampala Queens whereas a win for the Jinja-based ‘Sharks’ will see them leapfrog their hosts into the 8th position.

In their quest to avoid the drop, 10th placed Olila H/S WFC which is just 2 points above the relegation zone entertains 4th placed Lady Doves which boasts of current league top scorer Resty Kobusobozi. A win for Olila will see them switch places with She Corporates if they get anything less than a win against Makerere University. On the other hand Lady Doves want to win to keep peace with the leading pack and 3 points would see them tie with 3rd placed Amus College WFC on 26 points.

On Sunday, ‘the Kiddawalime girls’ of Uganda Martyrs Ladies will welcome Wakiso Hill WFC at the at the St Gerald stadium with 3 points on the back of their minds. Wakiso hill has the poorest record in the league having failed to win a single match out of the 15 so far played. They have lost 10 and drawn 5 and will need a miracle to beat the drop.  Their hosts on the other hand have turned around their fortunes after a poor first round to climb to 5th place on 19 points.

She Maroons hosts struggling Tooro Queens in the Prison grounds hoping to capitalize on home advantage to get the better of their visitors from Fort Portal. They are currently in 6th position tied on 19 points with Uganda Martyrs Ladies who have scored 3 more goals than them. On 12 points 11th placed Tooro Queens desperately needs to win lest they lose the battle as fellow would be relegation candidates Olila HS WFC are 2 points ahead of them and seem to be steadily getting away.

In Kawempe, the Valley ground will host what promises to be a very interesting encounter between the 2nd and 3rd separated by 4 points. Kawempe Muslim Ladies on 31 points hosts Amus College WFC who on 26 points don’t want to lose track of the leading two. The Faridah Bulega coached side who were promoted from the Finance Trust FUFA Women Elite league last season have been a surprise package putting up a formidable performance in their maiden season in the top tier women league. Kawempe Muslim wants to win to keep pressure on the table leaders who may easily increase their 6 point advantage in case of any further slip up by the defending champions.

  • Cubs Show Fighting Spirit in Final AFCON Warm-Up Against Cameroon

Cubs Show Fighting Spirit in Final AFCON Warm-Up Against Cameroon

Under the floodlights of Ziaida Sports Complex in Benslimane, Morocco, the Uganda U17 Men’s National Team (Cubs) stepped onto the pitch for their final pre-tournament friendly. Facing a physically dominant and tactically disciplined Cameroon side, the Cubs knew this would be a tough test. And indeed, it was. The match ended in a narrow 4-3 defeat for Uganda Cubs, but beyond the scoreline, it was a game that proved the Cubs players had the heart, the hunger, and the determination to fight until the final whistle.

The game started with Cameroon showing exactly why they are one of Africa’s strongest teams at this level. Their players were tall, strong, and aggressive, pressing high up the pitch and forcing Uganda to defend deep. Within six minutes, the pressure paid off as Cameroon found the back of the net to take an early lead. The Cubs struggled to settle into their rhythm, finding it difficult to break through Cameroon’s defense.

Before long, the West Africans doubled their advantage, punishing Uganda for defensive errors. It was clear that Cameroon was in control, dictating play and using their physical presence to win duels in midfield. As Uganda tried to reorganize, a third goal for Cameroon came just before the halftime break, leaving the Cubs with a mountain to climb in the second half.

For many teams, a 3-0 deficit at halftime could have been the end. Heads could have dropped, and confidence could have been shattered. But not for the Cubs. As they walked off the pitch for the halftime team talk, the message from head coach Brian Ssenyondo was clear—the game is not over. Fight back. Show character.

When Uganda returned to the pitch for the second half, there was a noticeable shift in energy. The players looked sharper, hungrier, and more determined to turn things around. And it did not take long for them to make a statement.

Ssozi Derick was the first to strike. The talented forward found space inside the box and finished brilliantly to open Uganda’s scoring. It was exactly the spark the Cubs needed. Suddenly, Uganda had momentum, and the game came to life.

Cameroon, sensing Uganda’s resurgence, tried to slow down the tempo, and resort to long balls but the Cubs were relentless. The midfield began winning more battles, the passing became sharper, and the attack looked dangerous. Then came Bogere James, and with him, a new wave of hope.

The young striker was full of confidence, and when the opportunity came, he made no mistake. He slotted home Uganda’s second goal, cutting the deficit to 3-2. The Cubs were now within touching distance of a comeback that had seemed impossible just 20 minutes earlier. Uganda kept pushing. The pressure paid off again as Bogere grabbed his second goal of the night, completing his brace and bringing Uganda within a single goal of leveling the match. At 4-3, it was now an open game, with both teams fighting fiercely.

As the final whistle approached, the Cubs threw everything forward, searching for the equalizer. They came close on several occasions, but Cameroon held firm, eventually securing a narrow victory.

After the game, head coach Brian Ssenyondo reflected on the performance. Despite the loss, he was full of praise for the team’s spirit and ability to fight back.

“Cameroon is a very strong team—they are muscular, they are physical. The boys got a different test from that of Burkina Faso,” he said.

What stood out for him the most was how his players responded in the second half. “Going into halftime three goals down but fighting back to a 4-3 result shows that we have the character to respond. That is the mentality we need at this stage,” he added.

This was Uganda’s second international friendly match as they prepare for the U17 AFCON, following an earlier clash with Burkina Faso. Ssenyondo emphasized how crucial these warm-up games had been.

“These two friendlies have been important. We can work on the lessons and challenges encountered before we play our first game on Sunday,” he noted.

With the warm-up games done, the Cubs now shift focus to their opening match at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations. Uganda will take on Morocco, the tournament hosts, on Sunday, March 30th at 10:00 PM (Monday, March 31st at 1:00 AM in Uganda).

Allan Okello’s free-kick seals Cranes’ victory over Guinea in FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers

Uganda Cranes bounced back in style with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Guinea in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night at Mandela National Stadium. Allan Okello’s stunning free-kick in the 34th minute was enough to secure all three points in a crucial Group G clash.

Head coach Paul Put made four changes from the side that lost 3-1 to Mozambique, bringing in goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi, Ronald Ssekiganda, Travis Mutyaba, and Rogers Mato. With Khalid Aucho and Isima Watenga absent, defender Elio Capradossi wore the captain’s armband.

Uganda started brightly, creating early chances, with Mato coming close in the 16th minute, only to be denied by Guinea’s goalkeeper Sylla. Four minutes later, Mato’s cutback went begging with no one to finish. The Cranes continued pressing, and Muhammad Shaban twice came inches close from an Okello corner and a Kayondo cutback in the 32nd minute.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 34th minute when Okello curled in a brilliant free-kick just outside the box, sending the home fans into wild celebrations. Guinea’s Camara, who fouled Mutyaba leading to the set-piece, was booked.

In the second half, Uganda made defensive reinforcements, with Timothy Awany replacing Elvis Bwomono at halftime. Calvin Kabuye and Jude Ssemugabi were also introduced as Uganda sought to maintain their lead.

Guinea pushed for an equalizer late on, but Alionzi pulled off a crucial 87th-minute save to deny the visitors. The Cranes’ defence remained resolute, shutting out the Guinean attack and sealing a vital win.

This victory marks Uganda’s third win in the qualifiers and their second at home, moving them to 9 points from 6 games, while Guinea remains on 7 points.

Quotes from the post-match press conference

“We deserved to win, we played well from the first minute and had many chances to score more goals in the first half. I am a proud of the team.”

“We didn’t perform bad in Mozambique but the situations like the simple goals we conceded and and red card cost us generally we didn’t have a bad game especially when we were reduced to ten men. The boys knew what this match meant and I am happy they put up a fight and got the positive results.”

Uganda Cranes ready for Guinea: Paul Put and Khalid Aucho rally fans for crucial clash at Namboole

Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put and captain Khalid Aucho have called for unity and solid support ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification Group G return leg encounter against Guinea tomorrow at Namboole Stadium.

Both sides are desperate for maximum points to keep their qualification hopes alive following disappointing results in match day five where Uganda fell 3-1 to Mozambique, while Guinea was held to a shocking goalless draw by Somalia. The Cranes remain on six points with Guinea slightly ahead on seven.

The reverse fixture in November 2023 saw Guinea edge Uganda 2-1 in Morocco.

However, history favors Uganda at Namboole, where they last hosted Guinea in the 2014 AFCON qualifiers, winning 2-0 thanks to a Geoffrey Massa brace. Massa, now the Uganda Cranes team manager will be hoping for another victorious night at the stadium.

Despite Guinea boasting several top players competing in European leagues, Paul Put remains confident in his team’s ability.

“Guinea has quality players competing at a high level in Europe, but we also have a strong team capable of competing in our own way. I believe in my players and the support behind us.”

Put also emphasized the importance of staying focused, stating:

“Tomorrow is important, we still have so many games. Everything is open, and anything can still happen. In football, everything is possible, we just have to stay behind the team.”

Acknowledging past struggles in particular custodian Isima Watenga who didn’t have a good day in office, he said,

“Even the best goalkeepers make mistakes, it’s part of the game and a mental challenge. Football is a team sport; we win together, we learn together, and we grow stronger together.”

Captain Khalid Aucho, the only squad member remaining from the 2014 victory over Guinea at Namboole, issued a passionate rallying cry.

“Our young players are the future; they took us to AFCON, and we must continue to uplift and motivate them, even in tough times. I call upon the nation and the media to support them. Let’s turn up in numbers tomorrow at Namboole and back the Cranes. We shall not disappoint!”

With history, home advantage and a determined squad, Uganda Cranes will be hoping to reignite their qualification hopes in front of an expectant home crowd.

AFCON U17: Pre-Tournament Friendly: Uganda Cubs 2-3 Burkina Faso

The Uganda U17 Men’s National Team (Cubs) kicked off their pre-tournament preparations with a spirited performance against Burkina Faso U17 in an international friendly played on Sunday evening at the Ziaida Sports Complex training ground. Despite a determined display, the Cubs fell to a narrow 3-2 defeat, conceding a late goal in stoppage time.

It was a game filled with energy, tactical battles, and moments of brilliance, with both teams using the opportunity to assess their readiness ahead of crucial AFCON tournament. Right from the start, Uganda showed confidence on the ball, stringing together neat passes and pressing high against their West African opponents. Burkina Faso, however, proved equally resilient, showcasing their physicality and quick attacking transitions.

The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Uganda conceded a penalty after a defensive lapse inside the box. Issouf Bara stepped up for Burkina Faso and calmly slotted the ball past the Ugandan goalkeeper, giving his side a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. The Cubs, however, did not lose focus. Instead, they regrouped and continued pushing forward in search of an equalizer.

Their efforts bore fruit in the dying minutes of the first half. A well-worked attacking move saw the ball fall kindly to Ssozi Derick, who made no mistake in burying it into the net in the 45th minute. The goal brought the Cubs level just before the halftime whistle, sending them into the break with renewed confidence.

Coming back for the second half, Uganda started strongly and wasted no time in making their intent clear. Just six minutes after the restart, Bogere James put the Cubs ahead with a well-placed finish in the 51st minute, sending the Ugandan bench into celebration. The goal seemed to shift the momentum in Uganda’s favor, with the boys enjoying more possession and dictating the tempo of the game.

However, Burkina Faso gradually grew back into the match, capitalizing on moments of lapse in Uganda’s defense. In the 78th minute, Alassane Bagayoko found space in the box and fired in the equalizer, bringing the game back to 2-2.

As the match entered its final stages, both teams intensified their efforts, with Uganda pressing for a winning goal while Burkina Faso looked to exploit defensive gaps. Unfortunately for the Cubs, heartbreak struck in stoppage time when Mohamed Sacko scored in the 90+2 minute, sealing a dramatic 3-2 victory for Burkina Faso.

Despite the loss, the Cubs’ head coach Brian Ssenyondo remained optimistic about the team’s performance and development.

“We dominated play, scored a goal in the last minutes of the first half and again in the early minutes of the second half. All goals we conceded were avoidable because they were individual players’ mistakes,” he noted.

He further emphasized the team’s commitment to improving ahead of the main tournament. “We will improve on our game as we move on, so that we attain our goal of World Cup qualification.”

The Cubs will now focus on their next challenge, an international friendly against Cameroon on March 26th, as they continue fine-tuning for the upcoming tournament.

2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Brave 10-man Uganda Cranes show second half fighting spirit in loss to Mozambique

A spirited second half performance from the Uganda Cranes against Mozambique showed greater signs of what to expect on Tuesday when Guinea arrives in the country for the FIFA World cup qualifier at Namboole stadium.

Despite being reduced to 10 men in the first half, Uganda Cranes put up a determined fight but ultimately fell 3-1 to Mozambique as the damage had been done before the break at Cairo International Stadium on Thursday.

The result sees Mozambique climb to the top of Group G with 12 points, while Uganda remains on six ahead of their crucial home tie against Guinea on Tuesday, March 25, 2025 at Namboole Stadium. Mozambique struck first in the third minute through Pepo Santos, who curled in an Olimpico goal directly from a corner kick past goalkeeper Isima Watenga.

However, Uganda responded swiftly, with Libya-based forward Muhammad Shaban rising highest to nod home Allan Okello’s well-delivered free kick, leveling the scoreline in the early stages. Mozambique restored their lead when Pepo grabbed his second, reacting quickest to a loose ball after Watenga had initially attempted to parry away a low cross from Gildo.

The game took a tough turn for Uganda in the 37th minute when striker Denis Omedi received his second yellow card for a challenge on Mozambique’s key attacker Geny Catamo, leaving the Cranes with a numerical disadvantage.

Before halftime, Stanley Ratifo extended Mozambique’s lead but Uganda came back stronger in the second half, determined to salvage something from the match.

Ethiopian-based goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi replaced Watenga at the break and Uganda nearly pulled one back when Allan Okello rattled the crossbar after a smart layoff from Elvis Bwomono.

Head coach Paul Put introduced fresh legs, including Ronald Ssekiganda and Steven Mukwala, in search of a breakthrough.

Despite Mozambique’s defensive resilience, Uganda kept pressing with captain Khalid Aucho seeing a thunderous effort denied by goalkeeper Ernani.

In the dying minutes, Jude Ssemugabi was inches away from reducing the deficit but his goal-bound effort was blocked for a corner kick.

Despite the loss, Uganda Cranes showed heart and resilience, setting the stage for an exciting encounter against Guinea at home on Tuesday.

With qualification hopes still alive, the Cranes will look to bounce back stronger in front of their home fans.

The Uganda Cranes contingent will return home this morning.

  • Uganda Cranes Ready for FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier Against Mozambique

Uganda Cranes Ready for FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier Against Mozambique

The Uganda Cranes are set to take on Mozambique in a crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier at the Cairo International Stadium on Wednesday, 20th March 2025. Speaking ahead of the match, Head Coach Paul Put and team captain Aucho Khalid expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and their readiness to fight for maximum points.

Coach Put acknowledged the challenges of assembling the squad but was optimistic about the team’s morale and work ethic in training.

“I think we all know when we make a call-up and we’re going to start the preparation that it’s always difficult to find all your players at the same time. So it’s not only for Uganda, it could be for other teams as well, but it’s not always easy. But I received the players little by little, and I think the spirit is quite okay,” he stated.

Reflecting on the team’s performance in training, Put expressed his satisfaction and underlined the importance of the upcoming match. “What I saw on the training ground, I was very happy about their performance, about their mentality, and I think it will be important for the game. You know, if you want to be dominant in your ranking, every game is important. We know that Mozambique is three points ahead of us, so it is always an important game.”

With the World Cup qualification campaign in full swing, Put reiterated the need for the players to rise to the occasion. “If you have ambition, if you want really to get good results, then you have to see what you can do. And away games are always a difficult thing, but I think that my players will understand that for us it’s a very important game, but for Mozambique it’s also an important game.”

Meanwhile, team captain Aucho Khalid assured fans that the squad was in good condition and eager for the challenge. “The boys are fine, and everyone is in good condition. They are motivated and are ready to fight for their nation and are getting what the coaches are telling them.”

With Mozambique playing in Egypt, Aucho called upon fans to come out in numbers and support the team. “I know we have several fans here in Egypt. We call upon you so that you can come and support us tomorrow as we take on Mozambique. We shall be happy to see you tomorrow.”

The midfielder also emphasized the team’s shift in focus from the recently concluded AFCON qualifiers to the World Cup campaign. “We finished the qualifiers for AFCON. So now our focus is on the World Cup qualifier, and the boys are ready to get a new challenge because it’s a World Cup qualifier and it’s also a big competition. So I think we are ready for that and the boys are ready for it.”

Aucho remains optimistic about Uganda’s chances. “Sometimes football is different. You can play at home and you don’t win, and you can play away and you win. So I think yes, they are away, but I think they are at home.”

Teen Cranes exit Women’s World Cup Qualifiers after defeat to Kenya

Uganda’s U17 Women’s team, the Teen Cranes, saw their hopes of reaching the 2025 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup dashed after a 3-0 loss to Kenya at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday.

The defeat sealed a 5-0 aggregate loss, following a 2-0 defeat in the first leg in Kampala last weekend.

Head coach Sheryl Botes made two changes to the starting lineup, introducing Halima Mupyanga and Loyce Komugisha in a bid to overturn the deficit.

However, Kenya struck early, with Patience Asiko finding the net in the 5th minute, beating Uganda’s goalkeeper Haira Nabbosa.

Despite Uganda’s relentless effort to break through the Young Starlets’ solid defense, they failed to find the back of the net.

With four minutes left in regulation time, substitute Brenda Achieng doubled Kenya’s lead with a well-placed finish, assisted by Joy Angella Valencia.

Achieng sealed her brace in stoppage time with a solo effort, outpacing the Ugandan defense to score Kenya’s third and cement their place in the final qualification round against Cameroon, who eliminated Ethiopia.

Reflecting on the loss, Coach Botes acknowledged Kenya’s experience, having played at the U17 World Cup last year. She urged patience from Ugandan fans as the team is undergoing a transformation in both philosophy and playing style. Botes expressed optimism that with time, the team would achieve success on the international stage.
