FUFA takes step forward in coach education with FIFA support

South African FIFA Technical Expert Mokata Frans Mogashoa has arrived in Uganda for a five day mission to mentor two FUFA coach educators Jackson Nyiima and Bamweyana Douglas. The Ugandan duo is currently conducting a CAF C coaching course that started on Monday this week at Makerere University.

In 2024, FUFA selected Nyiima and Bamweyana to participate in the FIFA coach educator’s development pathway, a specialised programme aimed at developing coach educators. The programme consists of four stages; e-learning (self learning without a facilitator), online courses (with a facilitator), on site courses and individual onsite mentoring.

Mokata’s mission is to mentor Nyiima and Bamweyana during the second module of the CAF C Coaching Diploma.

FIFA has shifted its approach to coach education, focussing on developing homegrown coach educators with Member Associations. This aligns with FUFA’s Technical Master Plan which aims to create elite coach instructors who will later teach the local coaches.

FIFA’s Head of Coaching Development Branimir Ujevic noted that; ‘FIFA’s goal is to enable every Member Association to develop homegrown coach educators’

FUFA Football Development Director Ali Mwebe expressed his gratitude to FIFA for the programme.

‘We need specialised programmes and technical experts to elevate the quality of our technical human resource. This programme will help us to align with our Technical Master Plan and we expect a multiplier effect. Nyiima and Bamweyana will be equipped to train local coach educators, meeting the standards of the FUFA Technical Master Plan’

Currently, Uganda has 15 active coach educators.

Dr Patrice Motsepe re-elected unopposed as CAF President for second term

Dr Patrice Motsepe has been re-elected unopposed as President of the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) for a second four-year term.

The decision was confirmed at the 14th CAF Extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo on Wednesday, extending his leadership of the organisation until 2029.

Motsepe’s re-election comes after a first term widely praised for stabilizing CAF’s finances and boosting its global profile.

Under his leadership, the organization set several new records at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Cote d’Ivoire 2023, attracting a record 1.4 billion viewers worldwide.

Prizemoney for major tournaments, including the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, has also increased significantly, alongside enhanced financial support for Member Associations.

The 63-year-old faced no opposition after the nomination deadline passed in November 2024.

His decision to run again followed requests from Member Association Presidents and key stakeholders.

“The goal remains making African football globally competitive, stabilizing finances, and investing in infrastructure,” he said.

Dr Motsepe’s unopposed re-election reflects both confidence in his leadership and the desire to see him elevate African football to new heights.

Uganda vs Guinea: Ticketing Information and Selling Centres

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has officially released ticketing details for the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier match between Uganda and Guinea, scheduled for 25th March 2025, at Mandela National Stadium. The match will kick off at 7:00 pm, and fans are encouraged to secure their tickets early to avoid last-minute rush.

In partnership with MTN, FUFA has introduced an organised ticketing process to ensure accessibility and convenience for all fans. Category Three, which includes ordinary tickets, will be available in three pricing levels. The MTN MoMo Early Bird ticket is now on the market at a cost of 20,000 UGX. This offer is available exclusively via the MTN MoMo platform and will expire at midnight on Sunday 16th March 2025.

FUFA Executive Secretary in charge of Marketing and Communications Rogers Byamukama emphasised the importance of taking advantage of this offer.

‘The MTN MoMo early bird ticket is on the market as we speak today, and that ticket is going for 20,000 UGX. However, the early bird will expire at midnight on Sunday,’ he said.

‘If you are a person who loves the most affordable tickets, please go to your MoMo Pay platform and acquire that ticket.’

After the early bird period, a second pricing level will be available through MTN MoMo at 25,000 UGX. Beyond this, regular ordinary tickets will be sold at 30,000 UGX at designated selling points.

Category Two tickets, identified as Silver, will be sold at 50,000 UGX. Byamukama clarified the transition from VIP terminology, stating, ‘Category Two is the Silver ticket, which is what we’ve been calling VIP tickets. We are trying to get in tandem with the CAF ticketing acronym. In CAF, VIP is not a ticket for sale. VIP is a ticket for invitation, free invitation in different categories.’

Category One, which consists of Platinum tickets, is available in multiple packages. Individual Platinum tickets will be sold at 150,000 UGX, while Platinum Family packages will be available at 900,000 UGX for six people and 1,000,000 UGX for eight people.

Tickets will be available at FUFA Merchandize shop, City Oil outlets, which include Nakawa, Kira Road, Bombo Road, Entebbe Road, Old Kampala, and Namirembe. Additional selling points include Hardware World, Total Bweyogerere, and Total City Centre.

‘Our partners, MTN, are arranging a separate promotion where you can actually buy a ticket and enter into a draw to win a few goodies,’ Byamukama added.

‘We still have some goodies that were supposed to be won the last time and they were not won. We are considering putting back those goodies into the raffle draw.’

Further details regarding this promotion will be communicated in due course.

FUFA encourages all fans to secure their tickets early through the available digital and physical platforms to ensure a smooth matchday experience.

Civic Education For FUFA Electoral Officers

The officers will play a vital role in assisting the FUFA Electoral Committee during the elections right form the grassroots(districts), Regions to the National level.

The journey began on 28th February 2025 when the FUFA Electoral Committee held its first meeting, marking the commencement of the 2025 election process. One of the key resolutions from this meeting was the appointment of the Electoral Officers, who were selected after a rigorous application and vetting process.

    7. FIFA World Cup Qualifiers 2026: Coach Paul Put; Our strength comes from mentality and unity

FIFA World Cup Qualifiers 2026: Coach Paul Put; Our strength comes from mentality and unity

In an interview with FUFA’s Communications Department, Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put shared his insights on the 26-man provisional squad summoned for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Uganda will face Mozambique on 20th March at Cairo International Stadium, Egypt before hosting Guinea at Namboole Stadium on 25th March 2025.

Preparing for high-stake matches, coach Put emphasised a game-by-game approach, acknowledging the intense competition in African football.

‘You cannot underestimate any African team. In World Cup qualifiers, opportunities are scarce, so we must be well-prepared. Our players understand that these chances are rare in their careers.’

Put noted the limited preparation time, with some players joining the camp just days before the Mozambique match.

What it means to the coach and the players play in the world cup qualifiers

‘Unfortunately, we have a short preparation period. Some players will join us on the 17th March and we will start training on the 18th March, with only two days before the game. It is challenging, but we will not make excuses. We will do our best to achieve good results.

Put’s Strategy for the three World Cup home matches this year

Uganda has three upcoming home matches against Guinea, Mozambique and Somalia. Coach Put prefers to focus on performance rather than calculations.

‘I do not like to overthink. We performed well away in the AFCON qualifiers and we should maintain that level. At home, we need to make a difference. The key is to focus on our game rather than stressing over numbers.’

Put on emerging young talent Sibbick Toby, Watambala Abdul Karim, Patrick Kakande and team dynamics

Put downplayed the reliance on individual players, stressing the importance of a team-first mentality. ‘The entire team is crucial. We do not have irreplaceable top-level players. We are missing Halid Lwaliwa, Elio Capradossi and Arnold Odongo through injury who are key in defense, but Uganda’s strength lies in collective effort and mentality.

Put on the World Cup ambitions

With Uganda aiming to qualify for its first ever World Cup, Put highlighted the importance of seizing the moment.

‘Every game is crucial. You do not get many chances to qualify for a World Cup in your career.  I have been close before and when you are close, you want more. Uganda must push forward and stay focused.’

Put on the immense support by Ugandan football fans

Put urged Ugandan fans to rally behind the team, as their support creates a positive atmosphere that boosts performance.

‘Our strength comes from mentality and unity. Fans play a significant role in this. Ugandans love football, and their support gives us the energy we need.’

      Travel plans for the team

The Uganda Cranes Squad will camp in Egypt with the travel of the local based players starting on 15th March. The foreign based players will join the residential camp in Cairo after the weekend of (15-16 March) matches with their clubs ahead of the Mozambique clash.

With six points already collected, Uganda Cranes will aim to collect three points in Cairo off Mozambique and then maximise their home advantage for a strong push in Group G of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

    10. FUFA expands Concussion Awareness campaign to all football stakeholders

FUFA expands Concussion Awareness campaign to all football stakeholders

In a continued effort to prioritise player welfare, FUFA has extended its concussion awareness campaign to the U17 Women’s National Team, following a successful session with the senior women’s team, the Crested Cranes.

The initiative, spearheaded by FUFA’s Head of Medical, Dr. Apollo Ahimbisibwe, is not just about education but also about transforming the culture of safety in Ugandan football.

Concussion management in football has long been a critical issue, yet many players and stakeholders remain unaware of the risks and proper response measures.

FUFA’s campaign, aligned with global standards set by WHO and FIFA, aims to change that narrative.
Dr. Ahimbisibwe emphasised that the initiative is being well received by the players, who now recognise the importance of identifying and responding to concussions effectively.

‘They are happy to learn so many new things that make the game safer for players. It is not just about the individual but ensuring that everyone involved in football can see, suspect and protect those affected by concussion, Dr. Apollo explained.

While the campaign has made significant strides with national teams, FUFA is setting its sights on a broader impact. Plans are underway to introduce concussion training to Uganda’s domestic leagues, including the Super League and the Big League, ensuring that players across all levels benefit from increased awareness and safety measures. FUFA will also take the campaign to the non-elite players involved in mass football competitions.

Dr. Ahimbisibwe is confident that as more players, coaches and officials receive training, the level of awareness will significantly improve.

‘Our goal is to reach not just the players and coaches but also fans and parents. Concussions don’t always present immediate symptoms – some signs may appear 72 hours later, meaning those around the player must also be able to identify potential dangers,’ stated Dr.Apollo.

This approach reaffirms the FUFA’s commitment to long-term player welfare. This campaign is more than just a training exercise; it is a shift towards embedding safety consciousness.

By ensuring that all stakeholders – from grassroots to elite football – understand the risks and management of concussions, FUFA is not only protecting the current generation of players but also setting a strong foundation for the future.

At the club level, Diouf featured for several teams, including Sochaux, Rennes, Lens, Bolton Wanderers, Doncaster Rovers, Blackburn Rovers, Leeds United, and English giants Liverpool FC.

His four-day visit, organised by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), will also include a tour of Big Talent Soccer Academy, a project founded by Eddy Kenzo.

2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers: Teen Cranes Suffer Home Defeat to Kenya in First Leg

Uganda’s Teen Cranes suffered a 2-0 defeat to Kenya U17 Women’s team in the first leg of the second-round qualifiers for the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The match took place on Saturday evening at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.

Kenya started strongly, launching early attacks, but the Teen Cranes’ defense, marshaled by goalkeeper Haira Nabbosa, stood firm.

As the game progressed, Uganda grew into the contest, but a defensive lapse in the 37th minute saw Edina Nasipwondi break the deadlock after beating the offside trap.

Teen Cranes captain Agnes Nabukenya had a golden opportunity to equalize but fired over the bar with only the goalkeeper to beat.

The visitors then doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time, with Joan Ogola calmly slotting past Nabbosa after a surging run down the left flank.

At the start of the second half, Uganda’s head coach Sheryl Botes made a double substitution, introducing Justine Ayerango and Patience Asango for Shadia Nabirye and Shamira Namukabirye in an attempt to turn the tide. More changes followed, with Rinah Ariho replacing Mariam Namataka, and Joan Kizza Namulindwa coming on for Nabukenya, who was forced off with a knock.

Despite pushing for a response, Uganda struggled to break through Kenya’s resilient defense. Nabbosa was called into action to deny the dangerous Brenda Achieng, who had breached the backline.

The result gives Kenya a crucial 2-0 advantage heading into the return leg on March 18, 2025, in Nairobi. The aggregate winner of this tie will face either Cameroon or Ethiopia in the final qualification round for a place at the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup later this year.

Uganda U17 Women’s Coach Botes Confident Ahead of FIFA World Cup Qualifier Against Kenya

The Uganda U17 Women’s National Team, fondly known as the Teen Cranes, is set to host their Kenyan counterparts on Saturday, 8th March 2025, at the Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo. This encounter marks the second round of the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers.

Ahead of this fixture, coaches from both teams addressed members of the media at a press conference held at the FUFA Complex in Mengo, offering insights into their preparations and expectations for the game.

Uganda’s head coach Sheryl Botes reflected on the team’s preparation and strategic approach for the crucial fixture against Kenya.

“We had eight days to prepare the team. From what we have done so far, we are confident we can give Kenya a run for their money,” she asserted.

Recognising the strength of the opposition, she added, “They are a formidable team that has previously participated in the World Cup. They bring a lot of experience and skill, so I wouldn’t use the same team that played against Namibia.”

The coach also stressed the importance of securing a home victory. “One of our key areas of focus is to get the win at home.”

      Uganda U17 Women’s captain – Agnes Nabukenya

“Playing on the National Senior team has helped me gain endurance, learn new tactics and this enables me to provide able leadership to my team. We have been prepared well to get the win against Kenya. The team is ready to show everything that has been learnt in camp. We know expectations are high following our big win over two legs against Namibia but the players in camp are grounded. Playing infront of our fans gives us extra motivation to search for good results in the first leg and plan later for the return match”

The head coach of the Kenyan U17 team Mildred Cheche expressed confidence in her squad’s readiness for the challenge ahead.

“We are not worried. We are prepared. Football is a game of 90 minutes, and a lot can happen within that time,” she stated.

She also highlighted the team’s developmental structure, noting the integration of younger players into the squad.

“We have players from the U15 team who have graduated to the U17 level to fill the gaps left by those who moved up to the U20 team.”

Acknowledging Uganda’s impressive performance in the previous round, she admitted,

“We expect challenging opposition. Looking at the previous game Uganda played against Namibia, it shows they are well-organised.”

She also extended her respect to the Uganda head coach, saying, “I have much respect for Coach Botes.”

      Kenya U17 Women’s captain – Halima Imbachi

“We know that it is a derby match between these two countries. It is a very big day for us and we know it will not be easy. We are ready to go and face Uganda”

Uganda advanced to this stage in emphatic fashion, overpowering Namibia with a resounding 18-1 aggregate victory in the first round. This dominant performance has positioned the Teen Cranes as strong contenders in the qualifiers.

The winner of the Uganda vs Kenya tie will proceed to the third round, where they will face either Ethiopia or Cameroon in their quest for a place at the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
