The Uganda U17 Boys’ National Team, commonly known as the Cubs, has officially kicked off its preparations for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025. The team entered residential camp on Monday, February 24, 2025, at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru, setting the stage for an intensive training period ahead of the tournament.
Out of the 37 players summoned by Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo, 31 have reported to camp, with six others expected to join in the coming days. The first training session took place on the morning of Tuesday, February 25, 2025, focusing on fitness assessment and tactical orientation. The technical team is carefully monitoring the progress of the players to ensure that the team gels well ahead of the tournament.
Ssenyondo expressed satisfaction with the initial turnout and the attitude of the players. “We are delighted with the commitment shown by the boys so far. The first activities have been mostly about getting them into the rhythm, orientation of players, and assessing fitness levels.” he said.
The Cubs were drawn into what many are calling the “group of death,” alongside hosts Morocco, Tanzania, and Zambia. All three opponents have proven pedigree in youth football, making Uganda’s path to the knockout stage a challenging one. However, Ssenyondo remains optimistic about the team’s chances.
“Our goal remains to qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup, and we believe we have the talent and discipline to achieve that,” he stated.
Uganda’s previous U17 AFCON appearance in 2019 saw them collect 4 points in group stages, sitting third on the table thus bowing out of the campaign and this year, the team is aiming to go even further.
In 2021, the Cubs qualified but tournament was canceled due to the resurgence of the Covid19 pandemic.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Abubakar Lawal, a talented player from Vipers SC, who tragically lost his life in an accident on Monday, 24th February 2025.

His exceptional talent and dedication made him one of the most outstanding foreign players to have graced Ugandan football.
On behalf of FUFA, its members, delegates and secretariat, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Abubakar’s family, Vipers SC President Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa, Nigeria Football Federation, friends, relatives and the entire football fraternity.
May the Almighty provide strength and comfort to those grieving during this difficult time.

The team enters the residential camp at Cranes Paradise Hotel to start preparations on Monday 24th February 2025
Excitement is building within Uganda’s football circles as the U17 men’s national team, fondly known as the Cubs, takes a significant step towards the 2025 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Head coach Brian Ssenyondo has officially unveiled a 37-man provisional squad for preparations ahead of the continental tournament. The squad is expected to enter camp on February 24, 2025, at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru.
The Cubs have earned their place in the AFCON tournament as CECAFA region champions, having put up a spirited performance in the qualifiers. Their thrilling 2-1 victory over Tanzania in the final was a testament to their resilience, skill, and teamwork. Now, with the AFCON finals set to take place from March 30 to April 19, 2025, in Morocco, the young Ugandan talents have their eyes set on an even greater goal—qualifying for the FIFA U17 World Cup.
Coach Ssenyondo has opted for continuity in his selection, retaining the majority of players who played an instrumental role in Uganda’s CECAFA U17 triumph. These players already have an established understanding of each other’s playing styles and tactics, which gives them a competitive edge heading into the tournament. However, the squad has also been strengthened with new additions, primarily drawn from the FUFA Juniors League and standout performers from school competitions. These fresh faces bring extra energy and depth to the team, ensuring a well-balanced squad ready to take on Africa’s best.
Uganda finds itself in a challenging Group A, where they will battle against the host nation Morocco, fierce regional rivals Tanzania, and a strong Zambian side. Each of these teams presents a unique challenge, and the Cubs must be at their best to advance to the knockout stages. The tactical and physical demands of the tournament will require meticulous preparation, and the technical team will focus on sharpening the team’s strategies and mental strength in the weeks leading up.
The road ahead is challenging, but with determination, teamwork, and unwavering support, the Cubs are ready to roar.

The Crested Cranes secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Ethiopia’s Lucy in the first leg of their WAFCON 2026 qualifier, thanks to late strikes from Zaina Namuleme and Fazila Ikwaput.
It was a game of few clear-cut chances, especially in the first half with both sides struggling to break each other down.
Uganda suffered an early setback in the 29th minute when defender Bridget Nabisalu was forced off due to injury, and replaced by Phiona Nabulime.
Before halftime, Resty Nanziri, Ikwaput, and Namuleme all tested Ethiopia’s defence but were unable to find a breakthrough.
The Crested Cranes increased their attacking intensity in the second half, with Ikwaput coming close, only to be denied by the Ethiopian goalkeeper.
In a bid to inject fresh energy, Head Coach Sheryl Botes made a double substitution after the hour mark, introducing Resty Kobusobozi and Agnes Nabukenya for Phiona Nabbumba and captain Viola Nambi.
Ethiopia had their own moments to take the lead, but Uganda’s shot-stopper Ruth Aturo remained sharp to keep them at bay.
Just as the game seemed destined to end in a stalemate, Namuleme was fouled just outside the 18-yard box in the 89th minute. She stepped up and expertly converted the free kick to give Uganda the lead.
With five minutes added to stoppage time, Ikwaput sealed the win with a composed finish inside the box, giving the Crested Cranes a commanding 2-0 advantage heading into the return leg.
Uganda will now travel to Addis Ababa for the second leg on February 26, where the aggregate winner will progress to the next qualification round.
The Crested Cranes conducted their last training this afternoon at the Hamz Stadium Nakivubo ahead of Friday’s fixture against Ethiopia, which will be hosted at the same venue.
Excitement is reaching its peak as Uganda’s Crested Cranes prepare to host Ethiopia’s Lucy in the first leg of the 2026 WAFCON qualifiers on Friday, February 21, at the Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
Both teams have wrapped up their preparations, with their respective coaches and captains exuding confidence ahead of the highly anticipated encounter.
At the pre-match press conference held at FUFA House, Mengo, Crested Cranes head coach Sheryl Botes and captain Viola Nambi, along with Ethiopia’s head coach Joseph Gebrewod and skipper Loza Abera, shared their thoughts on the upcoming battle.
Sheryl Botes (Crested Cranes Head Coach)
“The first few days in camp were a bit challenging as the players sought to regain confidence. However, we have key principles we want to apply in the match, and I am confident we will execute them well.”
“Ethiopia is a strong offensive team with a new coach and eight players from their U-20 side that competed at the 2023 African Games in Ghana. Loza is a standout player, Senaf has netted 14 goals in their league, and Aregash is a powerful attacking force. Their midfield is also highly mobile.”
“The Ethiopia team I remember from my time in South Africa played a very possession-based game, but they tried different tactics against Nigeria in the African Games. We will need to be compact and neutralize Loza, who is a threat on both feet and possesses great experience.”
“I encourage fans to come and support us. This is the senior team, and the best players will be showcasing their skills.”
“Pressure is always there, but I am more concerned when players do not perform well in training. It takes time to implement a game plan, especially with female players, as we often have to start afresh whenever they regroup in camp.”
“Our main goal is to qualify for WAFCON, and we have a chance with a potential clash against Tanzania or Equatorial Guinea in the next round. But for now, our focus is entirely on Ethiopia.”
“People sometimes question position changes, but some players struggle in their club roles. Our job is to assess and refine them to maximize their potential. While we have long-term plans to upskill our squad, for now, we rely on international players.”
Viola Nambi (Crested Cranes Captain)
“I’ve been with the team for the last three days, and I can confidently say we are in a good mental and physical state. We have committed ourselves to staying strong and overcoming any challenges that arise.”
“As players, we have held meetings to boost morale, and I have spoken individually with teammates to inspire them.”
“There’s no pressure. It is an honour to captain this team. I believe in the squad and the selected players, and I am ready to lead by example.”
Joseph Gebrewod (Ethiopia Lucy Head Coach)
“The spirit in camp is high, and the players are inspired. Though our preparation time has been short, we have worked to balance both experienced and young players.”
“Playing the first leg away is always tough, but our aim is to give our best and set the tone for the return leg.”
“Senaf Wakuma is a great player, but we also have other key professionals like Loza Abera and Aregash Tadese. We are preparing them well to ensure we get a positive result.”
Loza Abera (Ethiopia Lucy Captain)
“I recently started a new chapter with DC Power, which has given me valuable experience. I know Uganda has many professional players, and we lost to them the last time we played here.”
“But football is unpredictable; every match presents a new challenge. We will do our best to win tomorrow.”
“Our team is in good shape, with excellent coordination and a strong winning mentality. Since this is a national team match, we are determined to secure victory. I expect a competitive game.”
The return leg will take place in Addis Ababa on February 26, with the aggregate winner advancing to the next round. Uganda will be hoping to capitalize on home advantage to gain an early edge in the tie.
Crested Cranes head coach Sheryl Botes has confirmed her leadership team ahead of Uganda’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 Qualifiers against Ethiopia.

The FUFA Drum tournament returns this weekend, continuing to celebrate Uganda’s rich cultural diversity through football.
The competition, now in its fifth edition has grown in stature, offering teams from different regions/provinces a platform to showcase their talent while proudly representing their cultural heritage.
The qualification round, which began last year in August 2024, saw Bugisu Province secure a 2-1 first-leg victory over Karamoja Province. As the tournament resumes, six more provinces will battle to gain an early advantage in the qualification round.
The upcoming fixtures promise exciting clashes as the qualification round continues. On Saturday, February 22, Bunyoro Province will take on Rwenzori Province at The Royal Park Butema, while Kampala Province hosts Bukedi Province at Yes Center in Kampala.
The action continues on Sunday, February 23, with Ankole Province locking horns with Sebei Province at Kakyeka Stadium in what promises to be an electrifying contest.
Winners from these fixtures will advance to the next stage, joining already-qualified provinces, including Buganda, defending champions Lango, West Nile, Busoga, Kigezi, Teso, Tooro and Acholi.
Since its inception, the FUFA Drum has crowned multiple champions, with Buganda claiming the maiden edition, followed by Acholi and West Nile, before Lango’s triumph last year.
Nile Special, MTN Uganda, and Nivana Uganda are the sponsors of the tournament.
More than just a football tournament, the FUFA Drum is a festival of culture and identity, bringing communities together through their shared passion for the beautiful game.

As the Crested Cranes prepare to take on Ethiopia at the Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Friday, FUFA Media caught up with some of the foreign-based players to gauge their thoughts on the upcoming clash.
Fazila Ikwaput, determined as ever, shared her thoughts: “I feel great representing my country. My hard work at club level has paid off, and I’m here to help Uganda qualify for WAFCON. We know Ethiopia won’t be easy, but we’re ready.”
Phiona Nabulime echoed Ikwaput’s sentiments, emphasizing the team’s unity and focus: “The atmosphere in camp is fantastic. The coaches are preparing us well, and we’re united by one goal – qualification. Ethiopia is a strong side, but we believe in ourselves. I urge fans to turn up in big numbers and rally behind us.”
Ruth Aturo highlighted the team’s high morale and expectations: “Training has been intense, and every player is giving 100% effort. The morale is through the roof, and we’re all focused on securing a positive result on Friday.’
Bridget Nabisalu praised Coach Botes’ philosophy and approach: “I’ve worked with Coach Botes since her arrival, and she’s fantastic. She treats everyone equally and instills confidence in us all. We’re adapting well to her system, and I believe we’ll put on a strong performance.”
