    2015 AFCON

    First leg, Third round

    Uganda vs Equatorial Guinea

(To be played on the weekend of 18th-20th July, 2o14)

Uganda Cranes will play Equatorial Guinea in the third round of the 2015 AFCON qualification campaign after both teams posted wins in the return leg of the second round matches played this weekend.

Having knocked out Madagascar on away goals rule after a 2-2 aggregate score following Uganda’s 1-0 win over Madagascar at Mandela National stadium on Saturday, the local football fraternity was eager to find out Cranes’ next opponents.

Equatorial Guinea defeated Mauritania 3-0 to advance 3-1 o aggregate and set up a clash with the 1978 Africa cup of Nations finalists-Uganda Cranes.

Head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevich talked to www.fufa.co.ug shortly after Equatorial Guinea’s progress.

‘We shall play a good and competitive team that has a touch of Spanish football’ said Micho.

However the Serbian believes that small details will decide who joins the group stages.

‘I believe in my boys. They know what is at stake but good preparations and small details will decide the winner over two legs’ added Micho.

FUFA and the Cranes technical team will meet soon to discuss and share ideas on the exact date of hosting the first leg that will be played on the weekend of 18th-20th July at Namboole. The return leg will be played two weeks later.

    Uganda 1-0 Madagascar (Return leg)

    1st Leg (Madagacar 2-1 Uganda

Aggregate score 2-2, Uganda advances to third round on away goals rule.

Uganda Cranes striker Emma Okwi says that he was disappointed with his own performance in Saturday’s 2015 AFCON qualifier against Madagascar at Namboole stadium. The Yanga Africa FC striker who failed to find the back of the net over two legs, believes that he can do better than what he put in over the two legged affair against Madagascar.

‘I know what I can offer to the team. I know my abilities. I trust myself but my performances over two legs could have been better’ Okwi told www.fufa.co.ug.

The striker was replaced by his club mate Hamis Diego Kiiza in the second half. Okwi who threw a water bottle in frustration to his poor under performance as he walked to the bench says that the action was just all about his contribution to the game.

‘When I fail to deliver, I feel bad. My standards have not been up there but there is room for improvement’ added Okwi.

Uganda Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevich named a deadly attacking forward line of Okwi, tricky Moses Oloya and Geoffrey Massa who were assisted by Kizito Luwagga, Kizito ‘Baba’ Geoffrey and Khalid Awucho in the midfield.

The attacking trio saw Okwi operate on the right wing most of game with Massa the main striker as he managed to produce the solitary striker over 90 minutes.

‘ I am happy that the Cranes have own and made the fans happy’ I will look forward to the Cranes next game and hopefully I can do better’ added Okwi.

Okwi and his teammates will enjoy the moment for now following Uganda’s qualification but will keep their ears on the ground waiting for the team they play next. It could be either Equatorial Guinea or Mauritania. The next 2015 AFCON qualifiers will be played on the weekend of 18th-20th July.

Kibirige strike sends SCVU into semifinals at Cecafa tourney

Victoria University (Uganda) 1 – 0 Mbeya City (Tanzania)

While his strikers are misfiring, coach Morley Byekwaso should at least be pleased that the rest of his team’s departments are not.

On Saturday, midfielder Jackson Kibirige struck the game’s solitary goal as Sports Club Victoria University in the quarter finals of the Cecafa Nile Basin tournament in Sudan.

The diminutive Kibirige who spent last season on loan at Bul FC struck a penalty after 70 minutes for his third goal in four games since returning to the club in the off season.

The other positive for Byekawaso’s side will be the fact that his team kept its fourth consecutive clean sheet and remain the only side yet to concede a goal in the tournament.

It was another scoreless night though for strikers, Mathew Odong and Ceaser Sapewo.

All four have yet to score in the competition which has seen three of the team’s five goals come through penalties.

SCVU will now play in the semifinals play Sudanese club Al-ahly Shandi after its 3-0 victory over the neighbouring South Sudan side Malakia.

The Semi finals will be held on Monday.

The tournament in its inaugural season is designed for teams that won domestic cup competitions in their respective countries.

  • FUFA statement on today’s media reports about Magogo

The media is awash with reports that FUFA President Engineer Moses Magogo faces arrest at today’s 2015 AFCON qualifier match between Uganda Cranes and Madagascar at Mandela National stadium.

This creates the wrong impression that the FUFA President has eluded the institution of the IGG or any other lawful agency as reported in some media houses.

    FUFA wishes to clarify as follows;

    • It is true there has been correspondence between the two offices of IGG and the FUFA President.
    • There is absolutely nothing to suggest non-compliance by the FUFA president in whatever form in regard to the letter from the office of the IGG.
    • We wish to assure all Ugandans that the perpetrators of these stories have the intentions to divert FUFA and the Uganda Cranes from the crucial match today.

Finally, FUFA will give the IGG the same explanations as was the case when other agencies raised similar issues in the past.

    CECAFA NILE BASIN TOURNEY:

AFC Leopards [Kenya] 3 – 2 Defence [Ethiopia]

    Al Merreikh [Sudan] 1 (3) – 1 (2) Academie Tchite [Burundi]

SC Victoria University [Uganda] VS Mbeya City [Tanzania]

Al Ahli Shandi [Sudan] VS Malakia [South Sudan]

The Cecafa Nile Basin quarter finals will once again resume today (Saturday, 31st May 2014) with Uganda’s Sports Club Victoria University (SCVU) taking on Tanzania’s Mbeya City in Sudan.

They will play without midfielder, Muzamiru Mutyaba who got a red card in the last group of Group A against Zanzibar’s Polisi f.c.

On Friday, AFC Leopards romped through to the semifinals of the CECAFA Nile Basin Cup Winners Cup with a 3-2 win over Ethiopian side Defence in a match played at the Al-Merreikh in Khartoum.

Skipper Paul Were dribbled past three defenders but was brought down in the box, Leopards winning a penalty. The speedy winger stepped up and sent Defence custodian the wrong way to open the scoring.

Hardworking Noah Wafula doubled the lead just before the break with a superb goal. Jackson Saleh was replaced by Mike Khamati after he sustained a hamstring injury.

Favourites, Al Merriekh were on Friday ejected out of the tourney after a 3 -2 result that followed a one all draw in normal time.

The winners of the tournament will bag USD. 60,000, with the runners up taking USD.30,000 and the second runners up bagging USD.10,000.
