  • OPINION: FUFA’s new logo

    OPINION: FUFA’s new logo

By Ahmed Hussein (FUFA Spokesperson )

FUFA is right to patent its logo

Fake products including football equipment have dominated Ugandan market. Surprisingly football fans are happy to buy them. I know there have been efforts to curb the vice but some people are adamant and never mind about the efforts put in by others to secure the patent rights of their products. In sports, it is common practice for various consumers to comfortably walk in a sports shop and buy a jersey only to be duped that it is ‘original’ or the official jersey of a particular club or national team.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) on Thursday unveiled its new logo replacing the old one which had the two crested Crane and a ball. Like it is the norm world over, change at times is never welcomed with open hands and positivity. The new logo has already received disturbing comments from the public but the fans need to welcome the change. The Uganda Cranes has never had a logo.

I think the explanations on the new logos are simple and clear. The five stars on the FUFA logo indicate the federation’s five bodies-The General Assembly, FUFA Executive Committee, Standing committees, Judicial bodies and Secretariat. I know there have been concerns already with the use of stars which many people thought indicate the number of times a team has been champion of a particular championship.

The most important thing is for the football lovers to know that now the FUFA logo has been patented, there will be chance for the federation to make some revenue which will be spent on various projects.

In the past it was very tough for FUFA to actually claim that they owned the crested crane logo. They had no powers to stop people from buying the jerseys from various people or even importing them. Now it will be very clear for those who try to manipulate the patenting rights if they use the new FUFA logo without permission. It will be challenging but people need to know that one can’t easily use other party’s logos without their consent.

Let’s embrace the change and FUFA believes it has laid the foundation for the future generation regarding patenting rights of the federation’s logo and those for the various competitions and awards.

    KCC 2-1 Vipers

    CRo 1-1 Express FC

    Masaka Lc 2-1 BUL

    Police 1-1 Sc Villa

Herman Wasswa scored another winner as Kampala City Council Authority football club punished Vipers SC 2-1 in the FUFA Super League at Lugogo today. Last week Waswa notched the lone goal that gave the reigning league champions a 1-0 win over Simba FC away in Bombo.

At Lugogo, one of KCC’s youngest revelations Derrick Nsibambi had put the Kasasiro Boys in the lead only two minutes from kick off before Wasswa doubled it three minutes later.

The fast paced match saw Vipers SC coach Edward Golola try various tactics and paid off when team captain Robert Kimuli headed in from a corner kick in the 34th minute.

We want to punish every team in the remainder of the season as we focus on keeping our position as champions at the end of the league. I am grateful to my players for playing according to instructions and if they continue like that, no doubt we shall be champions’ said KCC FC coach George Nsimbe to www.fufa.co.ug after the match.

The win consolidated KCC’s at top of the 16 team league log with 49points in 24 matches and relegated their victims to the fourth place with the fourth loss and one game more.

Magogo thanked the former FUFA Presidents Denis Obua and Lawrence Mulindwa for playing a key role that saw Uganda benefit from FIFA Goal Projects I, II and III in which FUFA house, purchase of land in Njeru and construction of the technical Centre were achieved.

‘It is a huge task but we are confident that our clients will love the work we do. Work has started today and we shall work so that we complete the project in time’ said Kabugo-the project Engineer.

Mr. Paul Kabela Managing Director at Kabbs Technical services revealed that they will put up well designed infrastructures to match the modern standards.

‘The designs were approved and will be impressive to FUFA, FIFA and the fans upon completion’ said Kabela.

The FUFA CEO Edgar Watson briefed the media whom he informed that the project will cost $300,000. He also clarified that the Centre is purely a technical Centre to be used for educational services for football in Uganda.

  • SPORTS REGULATIONS: We need a modern day sports Act -FUFA

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) is in receipt of the new Statutory Instruments 2014 No.38 after the launch today by the Minister of Education and Sports Hon Jessica Alupo at Mandela National Stadium.

FUFA as a law abiding body will internalize the received new regulations through consultation with the Members

FUFA has been one of the most compliant National Sports Associations with the National Council of Sports fulfilling most of the requirements now included in the regulations.

Hon Alupo’s statement on new National Council of sports Regulations

On the matter of the legal personality of FUFA, our two objectives have always been and are to obtain a status that ensures our continued compliance with the FIFA Statutes and a status that allows us to trade in the Ugandan law so that we obtain resources and infrastructure to support football development.

FIFA on the Status of FUFA

Should the Members of FUFA find an option that allows us to achieve both objectives within the new regulations, we shall definitely opt for that.

However, should the members find that one or both objectives can’t be achieved within the new regulations we shall use acceptable means in the law to find a revision of the regulations.

Notwithstanding the above, as FUFA we insist that the 1964 NCS ACT cannot give birth to a legal regime to regulate Sports 50 years later.

We urgently need a modern-day sports ACT that accommodates both the business approach to the sports industry and governance structures accommodated in international affiliations. The former British colonies like Tanzania (1971), Kenya (2012), and Ghana (1976) have all amended the same British Colonial ACT. Even Uganda must overhaul the Act to provide a legal frame work.

  • FIFA Judge rules in Robert Sentongo’s favor

A single judge on the FIFA players’ status committee has authorized the Federation of Uganda Football Associations to provisionally register Robert Sentongo and play for URA Football club.

Initially FIFA had directed Ethiopian FA to release Sentongo but declined claiming that the player was still under contract with their affiliate club St George FC.

Part of the ruling by the single judge Mr. Geoff Thompson noted he was eager to emphasize that the present decision regarding the authorization to provisionally register the player for the Ugandan club is a provisional measure and, as such, without prejudice to the substance of the contractual labour dispute between the player and Ethiopian club, which will be dealt with by the Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) at a later stage.

In particular, the DRC will have to express itself on the questions of whether a breach of contract was committed by one of the parties, whether with or without just cause, who is to be deemed responsible for such possible breach, as well as on the possible consequences thereof, i.e financial compensation and/or sporting sanctions.

Sentongo is now free to play for URA FC.
