INTERVIEW: Mark Sonko-the first Ugandan referee in the CHAN finals

REFEREEING: Meet Mark Sonko-Uganda’s first referee to officiate at the CHAN Finals

He is shy when engaged in a conversation. He is always committed to perform duties assigned to him to the best of his ability. The driving force behind his love towards refereeing is attributed to his late father Mark Kagwa who was a National center referee in Mpigi in the 80s. Sonko was Uganda’s sole assistant referee at the just concluded Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) finals in South Africa.  To put the record straight, he remains the only Ugandan to ever officiate at the CHAN finals. Even with his tight schedules where he juggles between being a businessman and referee, Sonko still spared some time to talk to www.fufa.co.ug about his journey in refereeing.

    Who is Mark Sonko?

I’m a humble and confident man who always wants to stick my hands on things that I do to get the best results. I was born 35 years ago and used to play football but an injury to one of my legs kept me away from actively play the sport on the pitch.  I attended my education at Kanyike Primary School, Mpigi district, St Balikudembe Senior Secondary School, Mitala Maria and Kamengo Vocational Institute. I’m also a businessman and referee.

Take us through your journey as a referee and now assistant referee

I fell in love with refereeing the moment I gave up playing football because of an injury I suffered on my leg. I loved football a lot and I never wanted to keep away from the sport. My next choice was to take up refereeing at an amateur level in matches at schools and around the village. But most importantly my father was also a referee so he encouraged whenever he used to see acting as referee.

How was your experience when you handled the first game as a referee?

It was fun for me when I officiated as a center referee in a village match but when I enrolled for a referees’ course, I noticed a big difference. I handled my first official match in Ugandan football in Kampala regional league (former Zone 9 league) between UTODA Wankulukuku and Kansanga Half London at Muteesa II stadium. I became FUFA referee in 1998 but I later decided to become an assistant referee various tests I got the FIFA badge as assistant referee in 2010.

     Mozambiquevs Mali

How did you receive the news of being selected to officiate at the CHAN Finals in South Africa?

I was so happy because I was going to represent my country at CHAN. I knew I was going to write a new chapter in Ugandan refereeing history. I’m the only Ugandan referee to officiate at this tournament. For me that was showing that we have good referees in the country.

Were you shocked by the selection of your name to go to South Africa and officiate at CHAN finals?

The continent has so many good assistant referees. But I have always said to my-self that total commitment and hard work leads to greater heights. There are courses me and other referees attended (Elite B courses) after the Africa Youth U-17 Championship in Morocco which improved our performances. I think the games that I have handled in various Africa soccer championship qualifiers have also helped me to improve.

What lessons did you learn from the CHAN finals?

I have gained a lot of experience and confidence. From the time when I handled my first international game between Burundi’s Ludic Academy and Wari Wolves (Nigeria) I have noticed a big difference and for me it has been a learning lesson. My first local league game I was a center referee and it was a game between KCC FC and Masindi Town Council. But I later changed and concentrated on being assistant referee.  In my various travels to officiate games, I have attended experience, met all CAF referees I was just hearing and reading about and I have learnt a lot while handling games.

Did you get any form of support from Ugandans while going for the CHAN finals?

I need to thank the federation that gave me all the support that I needed as a referee. Their words of support and encouragement gave me the confidence as I headed to South Africa. They also created a conducive environment for me that put me in the right frame of mind. Former and active FIFA referees like Muhmed Segonga, Ali Tomusange, Charles Masembe, Dennis Batte, Brian Nsubuga and Diana Mukasa also gave me tips. They told me to be confident, stick to the laws of the game, follow what is being taught to me during the tournament and also cope with the environment.

     sonko Gym

What kind of support do you get from FUFA in your refereeing career?

The federation has helped every referee. In the courses they organize, there are those that are based on developmental areas which are sanctioned by FIFA. The FUFA and FIFA instructors have also helped us lot. Haruna Kebba has also been at the forefront of helping referees in Uganda. Even FUFA has been able to create a good environment for us to do our tests locally and those from FIFA at the right time.

Did you share you experience from CHAN with the Ugandan referees?

I shared the knowledge, new changes-especially the offside rule, ways of improving modern refereeing and training.

Have you encountered any problems in your career so far?

Yes. But the main barrier is language. I have had to handle games where French is the only language being spoken by players yet you would want to communicate to them well. But I have found a solution to that. I have enrolled for French lessons and I’m determined to take up other lessons in Arab too.

    What are your targets?

I would like to get to the highest levels of refereeing in my career. God has blessed all my work so far. I will not relax until I achieve my targets.

    Who is your role model?

Mr. Ali Tomusange, the former FIFA assistant referee who officiated at the 20202 FIFA world cup in South Korea and Japan. I have learnt a lot from him. He is always giving me audience whenever I approach him.

How do you asses yourself after handling a game?

I always create time and asses myself but it hurts a lot when you realize that you were not at your best during a game.  But I always look to the future to improve in the net game.

What has been your secret to this success?

I still want to be successful at the highest levels. I’m 35 years now. But discipline is mandatory for any referee who wants to succeed.  My family has also been supportive.  Refereeing involves a lot of traveling.

How do you handle the fans that verbally attack referees while handling matches?

They are part of the game. In our courses we are taught to handle such situations and never lose control of the game. Actually, the best solution is to ignore their insults and pretend as if you are deaf.

How do you maintain standards at the highest levels of refereeing?

Modern refereeing is very demanding. We do monthly tests from CAF and FIFA. Soon we shall have online tests.  We always have four recognized fitness tests in a country annually but you also have to undergo more fitness tests for each tournament when assigned to handle matches.  Hard training is paramount.  I put in a lot during my training- the minimum days for my training-four days a week. There is no way you can officiate a match when you are not fit.

What is the toughest game you ever handled?

It was a super league game between Boroboro and Simba in Lira. Fans kept protesting every goal scored. It needed the intervention of security on the pitch to calm the tempers.

     DSCF1238

What is the toughest ground on which you have officiated a game?

There are two stadiums-in Lira and Ssaza grounds but I have no problem handling games from these venues if assigned.

Finally, any words to the local football fraternity?

Refereeing has a bright future in Uganda. Hard work pays.

Uganda’s most famous football knock out tournament resumes today with four games on card. However there are two fixtures in the round of 64 that need to be completed.

Defending champions Sports Club Victoria University (SCVU) have a long trip to North Eastern Uganda to face Amuria Crane City in one of the two remaining games for qualification into the round of 32.  SCVU who travelled yesterday for the trip will be hoping to get the better of the lower division team as they the Kampala based side wouldn’t mind going further in the tournament with the possibility of defending the title and going back for continental football.

The other fixture is between Kumi University and Village club California VCC) in Kumi.

    Round of 32 gets underway

    Entebbe vs Police FC

Life, so far is not easy for Entebbe Fc who are in relegation zone in the FSL while Police might be having different plans for the season. Entebbe FC-the only team yet to win a game in the FSL decided to use Bugonga as their home ground for the Uganda cup matches so that they get the full support of their fans with the hope of backing the teams as well in the remaining fixtures of the FSL.

‘Every game is like a cup final for our boys. We want to perform well in both the Uganda cup and league’ said Rehema Nakabuye-Secretary of Entebbe FC.

Entebbe will be allowed to use Sentamu Siraje who was red cared in the game against Masaka LC in the league.

  • International Friendly: Zambia vs Uganda- KCC FC players rested

The FUFA President Engineer Moses Magogo has required  the Coaches and Technical Team of the Uganda Cranes to rest KCC FC players who had been selected in the 25 man squad for the International friendly with Zambia due on Wednesday 5th March, 2014 in Ndola.

FUFA believes that the latest development will help in a bid to boost the organizational and logistical preparations of KCC FC ahead of the return leg of the first round of the CAF Champions League match against Zambia’s Nkana red Devils.

However KCC FC players will still be considered for selection in future for international engagements.

‘KCC FC is representing Uganda and considering that they were stretched playing 10 men for the long period, it must have taken toll on the players to deserve a better rest for the return game. In solidarity and support of KCC FC, let us use other players’ said Magogo

KCC FC drew 2-2 with Nkana Red Devils in a game that saw midfielder Tom Masiko shown marching orders.

The technical team will now look at other players minus KCC’s trio Brian Majwega, Ivan Ntege and Tony Odur who had been named in the initial Uganda Cranes squad.

The contingent to Zambia will be released before close of business today.

They have picked up respectable results against teams above them in the table- Simba (0-0) in Bombo, held SC Villa to a 1-1 draw and beat Soana 2-1. Vipers have collected six points from a possible nine points and a win today will see them remain top of the table on 38 points. The first round match between the two teams ended 1-0 in favor of Vipers at Nakivubo stadium.

Kira Young, URA could go to the summit

The result of the match between Vipers and Bright stars will give both Kira and URA a lot of hope of going top of the table if only they win their fixtures as well. If Kira and Vipers lose, a win for URA will be enough to see Paul Nkata’s team go top of the table.

URA lost their last outing (2-1) to SCVU in Lugazi and will play host to Proline today while Kira Young were not in action on Tuesday. Haruna Kebba’s boys have a game against Sc Villa at Nakivubo Stadium.

  • CAF blesses Zambia vs Uganda friendly

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has received communication from Confederation of African Football (CAF) giving them the all clear for the international friendly due next week on 5th March, 2014.

Usually when such friendly matches come up, the football federations involved write to authorities concerned seeking for guidance, clarity and clearance as to whether can go ahead with the fixtures.

‘We received communication from CAF who have no objection to the friendly’ said FUFA Chief Executive Officer Edgar Watson.

Such friendlies require all clubs to release their players summoned to the national team as per FIFA rules.

Part of the communication from CAF signed by Ahmed Salem from the Competitions Division read ‘Kindly be informed that CAF has no objection on your participation in the said match on condition that it is organized in conformity with FIFA Governing International matches’

Uganda Cranes will play Zambia’s Chipolopolo in Ndola at the Levi Mwanawasa stadium.

  • Buikwe stadium set for inspection

The FUFA Super League Board and its Licensing Board will inspect the Buikwe stadium that is still under ban following crowd violence in the first round of the FSL match between Vipers and Sports Club Villa.

The FUFA Vice President Mujib Kasule has confirmed that the federation has received official communication from Vipers Sports club signed by Secretary Haruna Kyobe informing the FUFA Competitions Committee that the stadium is now ready to host league games again.

‘Our team will visit Buikwe tomorrow at Midday to inspect the stadium. A report should be ready by close of business on Monday next week’ said Kasule.

    The inspection team will try to find out whether;

1-the players and match officials’ dressing rooms are now separated from the fans’ stands

2-The safety of fans is guaranteed

    3-A proper perimeter fence

Vipers are hopeful that the inspection team will clear them to host league games again.

“We have worked tirelessly to ensure that whatever was required of us is in place hence we are optimistic the ground will be reinstated after the inspection’ said Kyobe.

The current FSL table leaders Vipers have been using St Mary’s Kitende as their home ground following the ban.

  • INTERVIEW: With former striker turned administrator Mamelodi

    Mamelodi

The mention of the name Ashford Mamelodi directly links people’s minds to football.  He has been spotted regularly in the East and Southern Africa region on various missions to help with the development of football. One would be surprised to know that Mamelodi was a deadly striker for his local club-Black Pirel in Botswana way back in the 1980s. During his playing days, life was so sweet for him on the pitch because the club he played for then was in the top flight but now, they find themselves in the lower tier league (First Division) -South End in Botswana.

How football has evolved over the years since 1986 when Mamelodi last kicked a ball as an active player until today where he holds one of the most powerful positions in world football on the African continent, tells a different story on how he fell in love with football administration.

FUFA Media Team caught up with the FIFA Development Officer for Eastern and Southern Africa during his most recent visit in Uganda when he addressed the sports media on the status of artificial turf project at the KCCA Stadium in Lugogo.

The extensive interview carried out at Emin Pasha Hotel in the Ugandan capital-Kampala covered issues on football development in the country, structures, the new FUFA administration and FIFA’s continued support to its member associations.

FUFA Media (FM): Why did you leave playing football and join football administration yet strikers are guaranteed of the limelight when they score goals?

Ashford Mamelodi (AM): I was a deadly striker at my club Black Pirel FC but I never stayed long in active football as I saw things not going right off the pitch in terms of administration. I decided to quit active football in 1986 and switched my attention to another field. I felt football needed a helping hand in administration.

FM: Is there any change in football administration on the African Continent from the time you gave up playing the sport?

There is a huge change over the years but there is still a lot to be done. It has been a gradual process.  Administration is not about leadership of federations but the pillars of football like clubs need to appreciate the importance of proper administration. If I run a club for 20 years it would still need to be given the administration touch. I have even seen professional clubs being run poorly administratively.  We need to put in a lot for the administration of clubs in Africa.

FM: What is the role of FIFA Development Officers?

AM: First, let me tell you that there are four FIFA Development offices in Africa. They are found in Yaoundé (Cameroon), Gaborone (Botswana), Cairo (Egypt) and Abidjan (Ivory Coast). Initially our job was to manage FIFA goal projects but over the years the job has evolved with different responsibilities as assigned and guided by FIFA. Now The FIFA development Officers have been handed the tasks to see that the world soccer governing body’s projects like goal projects, coaching courses, refereeing courses, administration courses are welcomed.  These projects help produce the right level of quality on the pitch.  FIFA will never be satisfied until its member associations get the best.  It should be noted that FIFA has made an impact on global projects particularly Africa with reference to the goal projects. Many federations didn’t have offices. There is no federation in Africa now that doesn’t have what FIFA President Sepp Blatter calls ‘House of Football’. Uganda has the FUFA house in Mengo as its football headquarters.

As a FIFA development officer, I have also tried to see that every country in the East and Southern Africa get an artificial turf pitch. The ‘Win In Africa with Africa’ project which came after the FIFA 2010 World cup in South Africa, FUTURO III and grass roots programmes were also extended to the African countries.

How do you rate development of football in Uganda?

I think Uganda has made positive strides. The last time we were here in Uganda, we had to put off some fires. I vividly recall how we had to fuse the 2005 fires before Lawrence Mulindwa got elected. When such happens, the focus switches from football. The Win in Africa with Africa, FUFA house, technical Centre in Njeru with funding for the extension of the project set to resume, at Njeru technical center, Uganda football is destined for the greater things. The huge constitutional review of the FUFA statutes which has given a big revision of how football should be run in Uganda has also helped the game move forward.  There is a right environment, but we need to launch the grass root football in Uganda. I’m certified that Uganda has moved forward. With the FIFA Performance programmes, many changes are set to occur and they will definitely take toll on some people but Ugandans must give football a chance to re-engineer itself in this country

FM: Have you noticed any improvement on Uganda beach soccer?

AM: Beach soccer has done very well in Uganda compared to many countries in Africa but we still think it can improve. We want Uganda to start competing regionally and internationally. There is a lot of potential for beach soccer and can be taken to other parts of Uganda. I like the National League which also has Pepsi as a sponsor.

FM: Does FIFA have any plans for coaches in Uganda?

AM: We need to restructure the FUFA Secretariat first. Then  the job of producing coaches will be easier. Once the development structure is improved on, it becomes easier. We want the current figure of about 28 CAF C License coaches to increase to 500. If coaches qualify with good grades and papers it will help clubs get good tactics to improve the sport. It should be noted that good coaches and referees lead to quality football. We want Uganda to have more courses for capacity building. The more instructors we have in a particular country the better and the fruits are there for people to see.

FM: What is your take in regard to the current football environment in Uganda?

AM: As FIFA, we are not opposed to any probe committees but we insist that people must remember the FIFA statutes in terms of interference by outside parties. It is important for people to know what the remedies used by the probe to stop any irregularities should not interfere with the smooth running of the game. We are not insulating soccer officials from the law. The leadership needs to be focused. When there is change, it is normal that people will react to it differently. FIFA has been part of the governance reforms in Uganda epitomized with the new statutes that brought into the current leadership. So far so good and that is why the FIFA Development Programmes are continuing in Uganda

FM: How does FIFA plan to help Ugandan football under the leadership of Engineer Moses Magogo? And how do you rate him?

AM: It is still early stages for Magogo’s leadership but we have reason to be hopeful for the best. He is a FIFA regional instructor and his Vice president Justus Mugisha. They have been trained by FIFA to teach football Administration. I strongly believe they have a lot to offer and know what to do. FUFA is on the right direction and will go far. Lawrence Mulindwa came in at the end of a crisis in 2004 and basically rebuilt football in Uganda. He helped steer football to calmer waters. Football needs to be given prominence.

FM: What is the relationship between FIFA and the current FUFA executive led by Magogo?

AM: It is a cordial relationship and that is why we see good things happening to Ugandan football. The federation is in a stable environment. We have known Magogo for a long time and he has gone through all levels of football administration conducted by FIFA. When a new team comes in, some-times people never appreciate the changes. But we are supporting Magogo and we believe he will improve the standards of Uganda football.

    International friendly: Zambia vs Uganda

Wednesday 5th March, 2014 in Ndola

Uganda Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevich believes that the next week’s friendly with Zambia is a basis for a strong future in international football. Micho who addressed the media at FUFA house today morning revealed that he called up senior players with experience in a bid to help the Cranes post good results against the former African champions.

‘CAF used the performance of national teams in the past three years to decide on the teams that would not go through qualifiers of the CAN 2015. So, I need a strong team for this friendly’ said Micho

The Serbian also said the friendly will help Cranes prepare for the forthcoming international fixtures due this year.

‘The CAN 2015 qualifiers will kick off soon and we must be ready. I need to try out every player’ added Micho who said that he will name his final 18 man squad at the weekend for the trip to Ndola.

He also clarified why he left out most of the players who were in South Africa for the CHAN finals.

‘The tournament was for the local based players but we have managed to select some of them for the friendly against Zambia’ said Micho

He also said that CECAFA and CHAN are tournaments designed for developmental purposes but also an opportunity for players like Ivan Ntege, Brian Majwega and Nicholas Wadada get selected for senior team duty.
