  • Mwebaze loses coaching job after failing CAF Exams

Fired: U17 Assistant Head Coach Asaph Mwebaze

The FUFA Executive Committee that sat yesterday (Friday Sept 14) evening relieved Mr. Asaph Mwebaze of the duties of an assistant Coach for the National U17 Football team.

Mwebaze, a head coach of Maroons FC which was also excluded from the FUFA Super League during the same meeting, formerly deputized Richard Wasswa on the technical bench. The decision by the FUFA Executive committee followed the release of the results from the recently concluded ‘CAF License C’ examinations.

The new CAF rules direct that no person should be mandated with the role of coaching a national team or a club that participates in any CAF sanctioned/organized tournaments without a CAF license C.

During the course conducted at Namboole between August 13-26, a pass mark of 60% was set for the acquisition of this certificate to which Mwebaze performed far below.

The executive committee on advice of the FUFA technical committee will fill this vacant seat in one of its next sittings.

  • Maroons FC excluded from FUFA Super League

    Executive Committee session in progress

The FUFA Executive Committee sitting this Friday afternoon 14th September 2012 at the Federation headquarters in Mengo has on recommendation of the FUFA Licensing Board and the Competitions Committee excluded Maroons Football Club from participating in the FUFA Super League for non compliance.

Maroons, a club owned by Uganda Prisons with its base in Luzira was the only club by closure of the licensing deadline that had failed to submit their compliance forms to the Competitions committee.

The Executive committee has recommended the competitions committee to replace Maroons with a club from the FUFA Big League in order of sporting merit.

The Executive Committee has further warned clubs licenced by the FUFA Licencing Board against participating in any other competitions not recognized by FUFA. Such culprits shall be liable to disciplinary actions under the FIFA and FUFA statutes and Regulations.

  • CECAFA Excom re-affirms Uganda as tourney hosts

Cecafa General Secretary Nicholas Musonye delivering a speech during the launch of the Cecafa-Tusker Cup in Kampala last month

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) held its Executive Committee meeting in Dar, Tanzania this 13th day of September 2012 as mandated by the Members Special meeting held in Seychelles two weeks ago.

The meeting in Seychelles attended by all the 12 members, requested the chairman of CECAFA to convene the Executive Committee meeting and clear the controversy regarding the hosting of the CECAFA-Tusker Cup 2012.

In Dar, the members of the Executive Committee in the good interest of CECAFA looked at all the documents related to the change of venue from Kenya to Uganda, and also the contractual obligations between CECAFA and East African Breweries Ltd with a view of safeguarding the interest of all parties involved.

The Committee took note of the fact that during the General Assembly in Dar last year Kenya was earmarked to host the event, but at the same time, the General Assembly was informed of the contractual obligations between CECAFA and the sponsors and the fact that the sponsors will have an input on where the event will be held in regard to their alignment in the region.

It should be noted that EABL are the brand holders of the event. But it is the regional branches, the subsidiary Breweries in various countries that fund the event. The case in Tanzania was Serengeti Breweries, while in Uganda it is Uganda Breweries who are committed to funding this year’s tournament and have already launched the 2012 event in Kampala. The committee therefore resolved that the 2012 CECAFA-Tusker Cup will be staged in Uganda and urged all CECAFA members to start preparing their teams. The Committee re-affirmed that CECAFA will always treat all its members fairly in the spirit of promoting football in the region. They noted that Kenya has always played host to CECAFA competitions and would be glad to give Kenya another opportunity to stage any of the CECAFA competitions in the near future.

The Committee further noted the region needed to work with Sponsors to promote the level of football in the zone and proposed to further seek another three year sponsorship with EABL who have been reliable partners of CECAFA for the past three years.

  • SC Villa succumbs to pressure, registers with FUFA

Club officials attending a two day workshop at Golf Course Hotel on September 12.
FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa and Primo Carvalo from FIFA during one of the meetings in Kampala. SC Villa has finally registered to play under FUFA Super League

The current leadership of defiant SC Villa has finally bowed down to pressure from both the historical members and the fans to have the club registered to play under the FUFA sanctioned and organized top League.

The club this afternoon submitted the compliance, Club application and Board declaration forms. They also deposited the registration fee of UGX 0.4m to the FUFA Competitions Committee. The club was issued a receipt No. 3017.

The current club President Fred Muwema has of recent reportedly been under pressure from the club historical members led by the former club President Franco Mugabe and Umar Ahamed Mandela the Former Treasurer. The group also had Kawuma Fred and Tamale Sam among others.

In the new set up indicated on the submitted documents, Muwema is seemingly relieved of his duties with Waira Ben as the new club Chairman taking over from a non compliant City Lawyer. Topher Frank Musoke is the club Secretary, Sanyu Rebecca heads the Finance sector, Nadiope Sam goes to Marketing and Kamya Elias is now the head of Technical matters.

The development now leaves only Maroons FC as a non compliant club. The FUFA Super League kicks off on Tuesday 25 September 2012.

  • SC Villa, Maroons heading for relegation!

FIFA officials have on many occasions been to Uganda to sort out indifferences but SC Villa and Maroons FC have attached no respect to their efforts! The two teams are now headed for a relegation from the FUFA Super League.

When it clocks 5:00pm this Thursday before SC Villa and Maroons Football Club submit their compliance forms to the FUFA Competitions committee, they will have automatically kicked themselves out of the FUFA Super League that flags off on September 25.

The official deadline elapsed on Monday September 10 but an extension of the grace period was granted for Express, Masaka, Maroons and Sc Villa to which the first two complied. SC Villa and Maroons have however remained defiant towards the federation position on the implementation of the new statutes and are reportedly opting for a parallel League.

All efforts by visiting FIFA/CAF and FUFA officials in this direction have since hit a dead end and we shall be left with no option other than seeing them off the national scene by the end of today. The FUFA Executive Committee that sits on Friday September 14 will among other issues on the agenda discuss the same matter and have it officially recorded for future references.

The Federation however wishes to commend and congratulate the 14 Super Division Clubs that have already complied for their positive understanding of the association football rules. These include BUL FC, Express SC, Proline FC, Vipers, Entebbe Young, Water FC, KCC, Victoria University, Victors, Police, URA, Kira Young, Simba and Masaka LC.

Arrangements are already underway to promote Aurum Roses and CRO from the FUFA Big League to replace the vacuum created by the defiant clubs.

Each Club will be represented by its Chairperson and two other officials in decision making positions who will also be managing the club administration on a day-to-day basis. The workshop will also be attended by all the FUFA Super League Board Members.

  • It was a fair result – Bobby speaks out

    Cranes Head Coach Bobby Williamson

African champions Zambia edged Uganda 1-0 at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium to give the Chipolopolo a narrow advantage going into the second and final leg of qualifying for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals. South Africa will host the continent’s biggest football spectacle.

The Cranes have not been to the finals of the Nations’ Cup since their second place finish in 1978. The Chipolopolo are looking to get to South Africa to defend the title they won last February in Libreville, Gabon.

After the match at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Uganda coach Bobby Williamson reckons the outcome was a fair result but that it will still be very difficult against the reigning African champions. He shared his thoughts soon after the match with Cafonline.com.

Cafonline.com: What is your general overview of the match? Do you think it was a fair reflection of the game?

Williamson: First of all, let me congratulate the Zambians for winning the Africa Nations Cup this year. They have a fantastic coach and very good players. Zambia is a very good team. We could have done better but it was never going to be easy against the champions. I’m happy that we are still in the tie. I think it was a fair result.

Cafonline.com. After this result, do you think you can turn it round at home and qualify for the finals?

Williamson: We have got hope. It won’t be easy in Kampala. Today it was never easy because we know that it is difficult to win on your travels in Africa. Zambia is very well organized and a very good team. It’s never an easy task against the champions of Africa.

Cafonline.com: Do you think you did well enough to win the match today and what was strategy going into this game?

Williamson: I think we needed to do more. Yes, we never troubled Zambia because they are well organized. We had a good opportunity which the goalkeeper saved. Am disappointed not to win.

Cafonline.com: Does this narrow lose make it easy for you in Kampala? Can you win the tie there?

Williamson: It won’t be easy in Kampala. I know we can do better but it won’t be easy.

  • Cranes in slim loss against Zambia in Ndora

FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa watched the game as Coach Bobby Williamson took charge of the technical bench. The team will embark on early preparations ahead of the return leg on October 13.

The Uganda Cranes registered an averagely good performance against Zambia, the continental champions when they lost 1-0 away in Ndora, Saturday evening.

The result did not however excite the hosts as both officials and players looked visibly disappointed after the last whistle over this an unexpected slim victory and there was almost no celebrations on the pitch.  The fans too, looked miserable from the terraces as they descended from the 45.000 seat stadium. The hosts had perhaps expected a bigger score than what they walked back with.

The game was watched by the FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa and the sports Minister Charles Bakabulindi among others. The team heads to the airport this evening and they are expected in Entebbe around 10:30pm aboard their chartered flight.  The result is however still a big challenge and timely preparations will be required in order to achieve our targeted goal here in Kampala on October 13.

FUFA however wishes to congratulate the players and our technical bench upon the spirited fight put up in Zambia. We shall ensure that the team goes into preparation on time and avail the necessary requirements to facilitate the process.

We also wish to thank the government for the financial support extended to our players through Hon Charles Bakabulindi days before we flew out.

But for us to achieve the target, the government should consider making more allocations towards the return leg.

On receiving the development, the world football body, FIFA announced a reward to the compliant clubs with an approval of a two-day residential course for all the clubs that have complied. • Kenya takes Cecafa battle to CAF, loses ground!

Efforts by Kenyan FA President Samuel Nyamweya to lobby members of the CAF Congress currently convening in Mahe, Seychelles to support his bid to host this year’s Cecafa-Tusker Cup hit a snug when the continental body refused to interfere with the regional administrative decisions.

The Cecafa members too convened a special meeting in Seychelles on September 2 with the same issue on the agenda. All regional FA leaders including FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa attended the meeting chaired by the President, Eng. Leodgar Tenga. The day’s agenda had only two items that included making consultations ahead of the CAF Congress and the Cecafa-Tusker Cup 2012.

Cecafa President Eng. Leodgar Tenga ( C ) talks to Kenyan FA leader Sam Nyamweya (L) and the FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa during the Cecafa Congress in Dar es Salaam last year.
Musonye shares a moment with the Cecafa founder member Kezekia Ssegwanga Musisi at Serena Hotel-Kampala last week during the launch of this year’s Cecafa-Tusker Cup 2012.

Regarding Cecafa -Tusker cup, the regional body President took the members through the prevailing situations. This special meeting mandated him to convene an executive meeting in the shortest time possible and issue a comprehensive report to clarify the matter once and for all. The members who were in conformity with Uganda hosting this year’s event further advised that the said document should state clearly the position of Cecafa.

It was however agreed that Uganda continues with the necessary preparations to host the tournament. Cecafa General Secretary Nicholas Musonye was last week in Uganda to officially launch the tournament at Serena Hotel-Kampala. He announced November 24 as the kick off date with the finals being played on December 8 in Mandela National stadium, Namboole.

  • FIFA hails FUFA for adopting new statutes

FIFA, an international football body has sent a message to the FUFA president Mr. Lawrence Mulindwa congratulating him and the entire football family in Uganda on the acquisition of the new statutes. The message that comes barely three days after the adoption of the new constitution on August 25 at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel is signed by the FIFA Secretary General, Jerome Valclke.

The FIFA letter stresses that the FUFA Super League is the only League that will be recognized by both FIFA and CAF.

Below is the full content as sent from FIFA to the FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa.

    Dear President,

We are very pleased to learn that the Ugandan Football family adopted the new statutes in line with FIFA recommendations. FUFA is now provided with appropriate tools to manage football in Uganda and will thus be able to avoid some of the problems it has witnessed in the recent past. The adoption of the new statutes is an important milestone which will certainly boost football. We are convinced it will help to develop football in your country and bring it to the level it deserves.

We also thank you for your kind words for the FIFA and CAF representatives who have been working very closely with you in order to achieve such an important objective.

We are aware that big challenges are ahead such as the proper implementation of the new statutes, be it with regard to the creation of the new members or the handling of the FUFA Super League. Since the latter is the only league recognized by FUFA and subsequently FIFA and CAF, we anticipate that the recent issues linked to the elite Ugandan Football will be solved once and for all. We are convinced that all stakeholders will greet the move and support FUFA and its league in setting up a competition of good quality.

Be assured that FIFA will be at your side in the coming months to help FUFA and its members to meet successfully the challenges. With the maturity shown by the football family through the adoption of the new statutes, we have all reasons to be optimistic.

Please send our congratulations to all the football family and our appreciation to the Ugandan authorities which have been very supportive of the process.

“Sports is supposed to unite us and not divide us. Let’s leave Pope Paul ready to work together for the good game of football”, the minister pleaded. Bakabulindi rushed out at football administrators exercising double standard practices to stop it and get principled. “Don’t belong to Mulindwa camp during the day and then cross somewhere else at night”, the minister further preached.
