  • Statement by FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim

Statement by FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim

On Wednesday 19th June 2024, the Honorary FUFA President Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa and Owner of Vipers SC while presiding over a press conference made serious allegations that require my response in order to avoid miscommunication with the football public.

    The Allegation

That having observed Vipers SC had a better  ‘goal-difference’than BUL FC, someone (interpreted to be FUFA President) single-handedly decided to introduce new kangaroo rules of ‘head-to-head’ instead of ‘goal-difference’ so as to disadvantage Vipers SC.

    The Facts

    1. The FIFA and FUFA Statutes bestow upon the Executive Committee the duty to draw and amend regulations without undermining the sporting integrity. FUFA set up a Rules Review Committee that receives, debates and proposes all FUFA Rules changes to the FUFA Executive for consideration.

    2. The 2023/24 FUFA Competitions Rules were duly passed by the FUFA Executive Committee and communicated in circular No. 1176 issued on 13th September 2023 before the kick-offof the 2023/24 Season. These Rules among others introduced‘Head-to-head’ ahead of ‘goal-difference’ to rank teams that tie on points when need arises.

    3. The spirit behind the change of this rule was a very likely potential situation of teams going into a goal race that may bring the game of football into disrepute. We all know that after the 22-goals saga that happened 20 years ago, the league has not yet recovered from this damage. We also observed at the end of last season that both Vipers SC and KCCA FC, that scored genuine goals in their respective final matches of the season, could have been interpreted as a predetermined goals’ race when both scored 10 goals and stood a chance of winning the league by goal difference.

    4. As the FUFA President, I observed a glaring gap created by the league organisers, clubs, the media and general public ranking teams using ‘goal-difference’ instead of the ‘head-to-head’ as per the FUFA Competitions Rules 2023/24. It is within the mandate of the FUFA President to direct football in Uganda in accordance with the rules and regulations set without undermining the sporting integrity.

    Conclusion

It is therefore incorrect for Dr. Mulindwa to refer to these regulations as kangaroo rules and regulations done by an individual to disadvantage Vipers SC or advantage any team.

FUFA respects the persons investing their personal money and time into football, treats all clubs equally and we do not favour any team.

When Vipers SC played in the CAF Champions League group stage, all participating clubs were subject to CAF Regulations that apply ‘head-to-head’ as first tie-breaker option and ‘goal-difference’ for all matches as 6th option to rank teams in the group.

I also take this opportunity to remind the media that they should be professional enough at any Press Conference to engage and ask questions that could help the public to follow.

Finally, Club Chief Execuitve Officers (CEOs) should read the rules and regulations and advise technical staff, administrators, owners and everyone else at their clubs to avoid misinterpretation of information and details in the documents sent by FUFA.

It is Our Game, It is Our Country.

  • FUFA not relenting on the fight against Match manipulation

FUFA not relenting on the fight against Match manipulation

FUFA has been unequivocal about match manipulation and the stance about the ever growing vice is not about to change. It should be noted that FUFA launched an anti-match fixing campaign in March last year.

The message was re-echoed on Tuesday by Charles Twine, a Member and Chief Investigator-FUFA Investigatory Chamber and Denis Lukambi, the FUFA Legal Manager.

Twine indicated that FUFA will not relent on fighting the vice and has the capacity to trace any cases.

“We launched a campaign against a vice which we realized was damaging the game. From that time we have been deliberate and consistent in doing our work. Owing to that background, we received a lot of information from different platforms and we realized there were cases of match fixing,” he stated.

Twine revealed that FUFA with the help of FIFA broke into a syndicate that had its base in South Africa.

“We broke into a syndicate who had penetrated through our game. Some of the names behind this are Mugisha Andrew and Mutyaba Highfier also known as Chelsea who were reaching out to referees, players ans some administrators and had their base in South Africa,”

“Our resolute as the chamber is to make sure that this vice is completely wiped out. Last week, some people were suspended for 90 days as we continue to make investigations.” He added.

Asked if the new Sports Act will be put into effect for the culprits implicated, Twine stated that that will depend on the security and judicial agencies.

“Our duty as the FUFA Judicial Bodies can only be limited to football judgements and we are aware of the Principal of double jeopardy. If the courts wants to pass criminal judgement then they are free to do so.” He explained.

Lukambi explained that FUFA has developed the capacity to make investigations and anyone involved in pre-determination of matches will be traced.

“As FUFA, we have the capacity to do thorough investigations and we take time to identify the cases, follow up, summon the people implicated before judgement is made.” Lukambi said before adding, “FUFA signed an MoU with a data collecting firm called Sportradar to get information from our first and second division for the start. The same company is working with FIFA and this has enabled us to get intelligence reports.”

“Our collaboration with Sportradar enables us to make thorough investigations and identify the culprits. FUFA and Sportradar Integrity Services are cooperating towards gathering relevant investigation on actual events. The same company is working with FIFA and has enabled us get intelligence reports.”

The FUFA Anti-Match Fixing Campaign is hinged on three key pillars namely Recognise, Resist and Report.

    Recognise
A match-fixer targets people who are able to directly influence the match. The fixer can approach you in various ways. For example, he can act very friendly and directly or indirectly offer you gifts or money or buy you other things.

    Resist
Without integrity, the game of football will lose its credibility, its fans, its sponsors: match-fixing destroys football. Protect the game and resist if you are approached to fix a match. If you (help) fix a match, you risk a worldwide lifetime ban from football, criminal prosecution and a prison sentence.

    Report
Reporting approaches for match-fixing will protect you and the game of football. It is important that you report any suspicion or corrupt behaviour. Report to your coach, club owner or FUFA on phone number (0787063409) and email address protect@fufauganda.com.

  • 2nd Edition of FUFA Tv Cup Kicks Off with a Thrilling 1-1 Draw in Preliminary Round First Leg

2nd Edition of FUFA Tv Cup Kicks Off with a Thrilling 1-1 Draw in Preliminary Round First Leg

The 2nd Edition of the FUFA Tv Cup commenced with a thrilling preliminary round first leg match between Nganwa High School Kabwohe and St Kagwa Bushenyi High School.

The game, which took place at the vibrant Nganwa High School playground, ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw, leaving fans on the edge of their seats and setting the stage for an exciting return leg.

From the outset, the match promised to be an electrifying encounter. St Kagwa Bushenyi High School seized the early initiative, stunning the home crowd with an impressive goal just four minutes into the game. Agasha Didas, the visitor’s striker, displayed remarkable skill and composure as he headed the ball past Nganwa’s goalkeeper, igniting celebrations among the St Kagwa supporters.

However, Nganwa High School, undeterred by the early setback, mounted a spirited comeback. Their persistence paid off in the 22nd minute when Karemera Faruku found the back of the net with a well-executed frekick from a few meters outside the penalty area, sending the home fans into a frenzy. The equalizer not only restored parity but also set the tone for a fiercely competitive contest.

Post-match Reactions Coach Mutebi Yusuf, Nganwa High School Following the match, Nganwa High School’s coach, Mutebi Yusuf, shared his thoughts on the performance and the team’s prospects:

“We started the game a bit slow and conceded an early goal, which is always tough. However, I’m proud of how the boys responded. Karemera’s goal was crucial and showed our resilience. We had several opportunities to take the lead but couldn’t capitalize on them. There’s room for improvement, especially in our finishing. We’re looking forward to the return leg and will be working hard to secure a win at St Kagwa.”

Tumusiime highlighted the importance of maintaining focus and improving tactical execution in the upcoming return leg. He praised his team’s fighting spirit and resilience, emphasizing the need to convert scoring opportunities into goals.

Coach Agaba Collins, St Kagwa Bushenyi High School St Kagwa Bushenyi’s coach, Agaba Collins, offered his perspective on the match and the road ahead:

“Scoring early was a great boost for us, and I commend Didas for his composure in front of goal. We maintained good pressure throughout the first half, but Nganwa came back strong. Their equalizer was well-deserved. Our defense held up well under pressure, but we need to be more clinical in our attacks. The return leg at our home ground will be crucial, and we are confident that with some adjustments, we can secure a win.”

Agaba acknowledged the balanced nature of the contest and the resilience shown by both teams since their contest is always a derby. He expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to perform under pressure and adapt their strategy to secure victory in the return leg.

The return leg, set for June 22, 2024, at 4 pm at St Kagwa Bushenyi High School, promises to be a nail-biting encounter. With both teams displaying commendable skill and determination in the first leg, the second leg is anticipated to be a fiercely contested battle. Fans are eagerly looking forward to seeing how the strategies unfold and which team will advance to the next round of the FUFA Tv Cup.

Winner from the two teams will progress to the round of 64.

  • Elite Coaching Development : 1st CAF A Diploma Coaching Course under new CAF Coaching Convention officially opened in Njeru

Elite Coaching Development : 1st CAF A Diploma Coaching Course under new CAF Coaching Convention officially opened in Njeru

A total of 25 coaches began their six-month CAF A Diploma coaching course on Tuesday 11th June 2024 at FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru. It was then officially opened by FUFA CEO Edgar Watson who was the Chief Guest on Saturday.

The course is the first one under Caf coaching convention launched in 2019. The convention is a set of guidelines developed by each of the 6 confederations standardizing all aspects of course management. The Member association (FUFA) has to work on a set of requirements for the confederation (CAF) to examine and approve before authorizing the association to proceed with course organization. This operates at levels of CAF C, B, A and Pro Diplomas.

Watson reiterated FUFA’s commitment to embrace coaching education and capacity building for coaches as part of 2023-2030 FUFA Technical Masterplan. He stressed the Federation’s vision to make Uganda the best footballing nation on and off the field in Africa.

In his remarks, Watson also re-echoed one of FUFA’s mission statement “to protect the game for all” and strongly warned the coaches against prevailing vices undermining integrity of the game.

“FUFA has done so many things around governance, and through the guidance of the FUFA President, the Federation has now turned its focus on the real issues that occur on the field. That exactly was the President’s vision in formulation of the Technical Plan. When we talk about issues on the field, we mean coaching, players, medical and everything that operates around the pitch,” he started.

“As FUFA, we want Uganda to be the number one footballing nation on and off the field in Africa, and you are the key stakeholders to ensure we succeed on the field. But we still think there is a lot to do about the results on the field and that is where you the coaches are a key stakeholder in developing the game and putting us at the top level.’ Watson explained.

“There is also a vice of match manipulation that is coming into our game and coaches are potential targets of match fixers. We are trying so much to fight it, and it is a big fight with the help of the sports law, global partners and FIFA. You are called upon to recognize, resist and report and element suspicious that may come your way in the fight against match manipulation”

The course is part of FUFA’s initiative to ensure that there are more highly qualified coaches handling teams from grassroot to professional level and it’s currently the CAF’s benchmark to coach in its Interclub competition that is CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

The comprehensive course consists of three modules that are divided into seven blocks and will span over a period of six months.

According to Ali Mwebe, the FUFA Football Development Director, this course is the second-highest level of certification offered by CAF, with the prestigious CAF Pro License standing as the highest attainable level on the continent.

“The new convention of CAF came in 2019. It’s a set of guidelines standardizing the way courses are done and it’s with in this that you have to tick a few things to be allowed to organize courses at different levels ,” said Mwebe.

    He further stressed that;

“When it came, we worked around the clock to fulfill the requirements within that convention. In 2019, we fulfilled requirements and did CAF C. We were very proud but also aware of the long journey ahead of us to attain further levels. We therefore embarked on the agenda to fulfill requirements of CAF B in 2021, which consequently came in 2022.
“We strategized again to embark on the requirements for CAF A and the target was 2024. So, I am happy and very proud to stand before you, witnessing the CEO opens this course that is core in our technical master plan in the areas of elite coaching development”

For the entire duration of 6 months, up to 8 facilitators will take the student coaches into various units of the course comprising practical and theory element throughout the 240hrs of the course.

    The areas of learning include

    Football Knowledge (Technical/tactical)

    Leadership/Management (specialized)

    Football physiology and anatomy (specialized)

    Football science and nutrition (Specialized)

    Laws of the game (specialized)

    Media management (Specialized)

Kenyan International and CAF Coach Instructor Francis Kimanzi Mbindyo is leading the module of the course which involves block 1 and block 2.

  • FUFA Tv Cup Second Edition roadmap released

FUFA Tv Cup Second Edition roadmap released

The annual FUFA Tv Cup is set to captivate the nation once again, with the second edition expanding significantly from its inaugural year.

Launched on Friday morning by FUFA Executive Committee Member Apollo Ahimbisibwe who also doubles as the Chairperson of the organising committee for the competition, this year’s edition comes bigger and better.

With a stunning 65 schools’ participation, the tournament promises more excitement, talent, and unforgettable moments as schools from all corners of Uganda vie for the prestigious title.

“The first edition which was a pilot project was a success. We received overwhelming interest from across the country and I guarantee that the second edition will even produce a better experience,” stated Ahimbisibwe during the press conference held at FUFA Complex.

FUFA Deputy CEO-Football Decolas Kiiza believes the tournament is part of the bigger picture of the FUFA Technical Master Plan.

“In the FUFA Technical Master Plan, we want to put emphasis on nurturing and identifying talent at a young age. I believe competitions like the FUFA Tv Cup will help to offer a platform to raw talent.” He said.

    A Humble Beginning

The first edition of the FUFA Tv Cup was a trailblazer in the realm of school football tournaments. Featuring just eight schools, it showcased a high level of competition on a home and away basis. The final saw St. Mary’s College Kisubi emerging victorious when they won Kiira College Butiki 2-1 at Muteesa II Stadium Wankulukuku, clinching the title and setting a high standard for future tournaments.

Gift Fred Mutalya from Kiira College Butiki stole the spotlight as the top scorer, leaving an indelible mark on the tournament with his exceptional skills and scoring 8 goals in 5 games.

    Expansion and Evolution

Building on the success of its first edition, the FUFA Tv Cup has grown exponentially. This year, the tournament will kick off with a preliminary round on 16th June 2024, featuring a clash between Nganwa High School and St. Kagwa High School at the Nganwa High School Playground in Sheema District. This match will set the stage for what promises to be a thrilling competition marking return of the long-awaited competition.

The winner of the aforementioned fixture will join the other 63 schools at the round of 64.

Jeremiah Mugerwa who is the Vice Chairperson of the FUFA Tv organizing committee cautioned schools against use of non bona fide students in order to attain success.

“FUFA has established rigorous standards and laws that schools are mandated to adhere to, and any violation will result in severe consequences. These competitions offer more than just victory; they provide valuable opportunities for networking and building social connections.” He stated.

The tournament’s structure has been meticulously designed to ensure every match is a do-or-die affair. The Round of 64 will be played on home and away basis, scheduled to start on 29th and 30th June 2024. This stage will see 64 teams battling it out, with only half advancing to the next round.

The intensity will escalate to the Round of 32, which will be played over two legs on 6th and 20th July 2024. This format gives teams a chance to strategize and make comebacks, ensuring that only the most resilient and tactically proficient teams progress.

Following this, the Round of 16 will also be a double-leg affair, taking place on 27th-28th July and 3rd-4th August 2024. By this stage, the competition will be fierce, and the stakes higher, as the remaining teams battle for a spot in the prestigious national championship.

    The Grand Finale
The journey culminates into the National Championship , which will feature the last eight teams. These matches will be held at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru from 28th August to 15th September 2024.

This stage of the tournament is expected to draw significant attention, with fans eagerly anticipating which school will claim the title this year.

There are 12 Chapters created to ease movement of teams according to their geographical location.

The segmented 12 Chapters are; Western Chapter, Buganda Chapter, Buganda-Masaka Chapter, East Buganda Chapter, Rwenzori Chapter, Busoga Chapter, Kampala Chapter, Luo Chapter, Elgon Chapter, Bukedi Chapter, Bunyoro Chapter and West Nile Chapter.

As the tournament unfolds, new heroes will emerge, and unforgettable moments will be etched into the chronicles of Ugandan school football history. FIFA slaps global bans on Ugandans implicated in match fixing scandals

World Football governing body, FIFA has extended worldwide sanctions on Ugandan players and referees who had earlier been suspended by FUFA in 2023 for engaging in match manipulation.

The players include Saleh Maganda (formerly at Calvary FC), Franco Oringa (formerly at Northern Gateway), Godfrey Lwesibawa, Yahaya Mahad Kakooza and Andrew Waiswa (all formerly at Gadaffi FC).

On the other hand, the referees that were earlier suspended by FUFA and have also earned extended world wide sanctions from FIFA include George Nkurunziza and Deogracious Opio.

Each player was handed a five year ban while the referees on the other hand will serve a ten-year ban per person and has now been effected by FIFA for worldwide sanctions from all football activities.
The elevated sanctions have been communicated to the individuals by FIFA and FUFA and start with immediate effect.

  • FUFA Anti-Match Fixing Campaign: 13 persons suspended provisionally for potentially participating in match fixing

FUFA Anti-Match Fixing Campaign: 13 persons suspended provisionally for potentially participating in match fixing

FUFA has banned provisionally ten referees, two football administrators and one player from all football-related activities for 90 days as investigations into potential participation in a multi-match fixing scheme.

The Investigatory Chamber of the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Committee received alerts indicating that several matches in the first round of the 2023/2024 football season had been targeted for manipulation for betting purposes by an organised criminal ring.

In accordance with Article 77(8) of the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Code 2023, official investigation proceedings were opened against the 13 persons.

Pursuant to Article 78 of the FUFA Ethics and Disciplinary Code 2023, Internal investigations into the matter commenced and the investigations have since revealed that a match-fixing syndicate based in South Africa was responsible for and financed the plot to manipulate the matches.

The operation on behalf of the match-fixing syndicate was led by one Hilfiger Mutyaba alias Chelsea and other local criminal elements.

Hilfiger Mutyaba is an ex-convict who was charged, convicted and sentenced in the Virgin Islands for financial-related crimes.

Hilfiger Mutyaba alias Chelsea and his accomplices recruited Referee Kaddu Ali who was tasked with approaching and recruiting club officials, players and referees on behalf of the match-fixers for purposes of involving them in the fixing of matches.

As part of this match-fixing scheme, the investigation has so far identified some of the matches that were targeted for manipulation by the match-fixing syndicate between October 2023 and December 2023.

    The matches concerned are;

    1) Kigezi Homeboyz Vs Kyetume FC played on 12/10/2023

    2) Kaaro Karungi FC Vs Calvary FC played on 12/10/2023

    3) Rines SS WFC Vs Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC 15/10/2023

    4) Asubo Gafford Ladies FC Vs She Maroons FC 15/10/2023

    5) Jinja North United FC Vs Kyetume FC on 29/10/2023

    6) Blacks Powers FC Vs Lugazi FC on 02/11/2023

    7) Kyetume FC Vs Ndejje University FC 16/11/2023

The investigation further revealed that several referees, club officials and players were approached and bribed by the match-fixers concerning the manipulation of the results in the matches mentioned above.

    There is prima facie evidence that the following people potentially participated in the match-fixing scheme;

    1) Kaddu Ali – Referee

    2) Kongola Ahmed- Football Administrator

    3) Epieru Richard- Football Administrator

    4) Sajjabi Geofrey- Referee

    5) Noor Hassan- Referee

    6) Muyaga Khalid- Referee

    7) Okello Simon Peter – Referee

    8) Nantantya Godwin- Referee

    9) Atuheirwe Joyce- Referee

    10) Nabisere Tausi- Referee

    11) Atuhaire Docus- Referee

    12) Ichilla Samuel- Referee

    13) Kiyemba Latif- Player

The provisional bans have been communicated individually to each party and the world soccer governing body-FIFA.

FUFA is committed towards the fight against match fixing. In March 2023, the Federation launched an anti match fixing campaign and also signed an MoU with a data collecting firm called Sportradar to get information from the first and second division for the start.

The same company works with FIFA and enables football institutions to get intelligence reports.

The result leaves Uganda on 6 points, three behind leaders Algeria. The FIF World Cup Qualifiers will resume in March next year with Uganda visiting Mozambique and hosting Guinea.

  • Extensive Interview with Uganda Cranes defender Elio Capradossi

Extensive Interview with Uganda Cranes defender Elio Capradossi

Prior to the game against Botswana, not so many knew about Elio Capradossi or even knew what the slender defender was capable of. However, his brilliant display on Friday night at Mandela National Stadium has left many waxing lyrical about the 28-year old calmness , composure and intelligence.

To some that needed to dig more information about the Italy-based defender, google came in handy and football enthusiasts know a thing or two about Capradossi.

FUFA Communications Department had a sit down interview with Capradossi and here are some of the excerpts. For purposes of this interview, we will refer to FUFA Communications as FUFA COMM while Elio Capradossi will be referred to as EC.

FUFA COMM: First things first, how did you feel about earning your debut for the Cranes.?

EC: I played my usual game because I was already bonded with other players who had helped me from day one. I am grateful because it was a nice experience and emotional because of the atmosphere created by the fans and my family was also here to support me.

FUFA COMM: Briefly who is Elio Capradossi?

EC: My name is Elio Capradossi, I was born in Kampala, my father is from Rome, Italy and my mother was from Kampala.

FUFA COMM: When did you leave Uganda for Italy?

EC: I was still little. I think like one year old so I don’t remember well. But I asked my father and he told me a lot of stories. We were living in Entebbe at that time and my father had a restaurant there. He stayed there for some years and later went back to Rome. I have also lived most of my life in Rome.

FUFA COMM: How often do you visit Uganda?

EC: I always come back like in holidays especially and when I was young I regularly visited Uganda. I also took an effort to visited the rest of East Africa.

FUFA COMM: How and when did you start playing football?

EC: I don’t know. I just found myself playing football.  But what I remember we used to play with my father because he also likes football. So, we played together at home. Then, I also played with my friends when we were little, on the streets, and we played anywhere there was space.  Step by step I understood that I was able. So, I tried to chase this dream.

FUFA COMM: Who did you grow looking up to?

EC: When I was young, in Rome there was Juan the Brazilian Defender. He was playing with Brazil and Rome.  I liked him very much. I always watched Roma matches and admired him. I always tried to play like him.

FUFA COMM: What are you key attributes as a player?

EC: I’m a defender, so I like to be aggressive but also like to play by starting attacks, long passes and very strong in aerial duels.

FUFA COMM: Why did you decide to switch allegiance from Italy to Uganda?

EC: I had an opportunity to play for Italy because I was already in the set up having played for the Junior National Teams but never made it to the senior team. Recently, Coach Paul Put called and he told me there is this possibility of playing for Uganda ans asked if I would take up the opportunity of being part of this team. I was very proud to receive this call.

FUFA COMM: How did your family react about this opportunity to play for Uganda?

EC: They were very happy especially my father. He is a football fan and my number one fan too. That is why  he also came to watch me making my debut for Uganda. So it is very good for me and my family as well.

FUFA COMM: What should Ugandans expect from you?

EC: I hope to do the best, I am new here so I’m trying to learn and to know my teammates. We need to do our best because we have very important matches ahead of us.

FUFA COMM: Tell us about the new teammates, how has been the reception?

EC: I find the team very good, there is good atmosphere. It is nice to be here, so I’m really happy because I am back to my roots.  It’s not easy to quickly bond but they have  helped me from the first day  especially Nelson Senkatuka, so I feel good and I think it is a good thing, we can do good things.

FUFA COMM: How best can you utilise your vast experience to help the team get better?

EC: This calls for a collective effort not me alone. Football is a team sport and together we can do great things which cannot be done by an individual.  I’m not here to change anything or everybody,  I’m just a player and I will try to do my best to bring all the experience that I have.

FUFA COMM: What is your best moment in your football career so far?

EC: When I played my first senior match for Roma, I was in their youth setup for a while and playing for the first team was a huge milestone for me. The other high in my career was when I played with Spezia in Serie B, we won the playoffs and we earned promotion to Serie A for the first time in the history of the club.

FUFA COMM: In conclusion, what is your message to Ugandans ahead of the game against Algeria on Monday.

EC: I call upon them to turn up in big numbers like they did on Friday. Come and support us and we hope to get another good result to make them happy.

FIFA World Cup Qualifiers2026: Uganda Cranes return to Namboole with pomp

Uganda Cranes made a grand return to Mandela National Stadium after five years with a remarkable performance against Botswana on Friday.

The Cranes had last played at Uganda’s football Cathedral in November 2019 against Botswana and their return was anxiously awaited.

Ugandans turned up in big numbers to rally behind the team and the boys didn’t disappoint, collecting maximum points.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, Vice President Emeritus H.E Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, Former Prime Minister Rt. Hon Amama Mbabazi, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Stephen Kazimba Mugalu, Mufti of Uganda His Eminence Ramathan Mubajje and Minister of State for Sports Hon. The coach deployed a formidable starting XI handing Elio Capradossi his debut and he did not disappoint, putting up arguably a man of the match performance.

Midfielder Ronald Ssekiganda too got his first competitive match in national team colors while goalkeeper Isima Watenga was the captain of the day in the absence of injured Khalid Aucho.

Right from onset, Uganda Cranes looked dominant and indeed got the most scoring opportunities.

The first chance fell to Fahad Bayo in the 3rd minute but Botswana goalkeepe Goiiseone Phoko reached quickest to deny him.

Seven minutes later, Elvis Bwomono nearly fired Uganda into the lead but his close range effort was saved by Phoko.

Despite a good start, there was no breakthrough for either side at the interval.

Upon restart, coach Paul Put made changes, first bringing on Rogers Mato in place of Allan Okello.

In the 64th minute, Muhammad Shaban and Bobosi Byaruhanga replaced Steven Mukwala and Elvis Bwomono respectively. This meant Kenneth Semakula moved from midfield to right back.

Denis Omedi too came on for Bayo in the 70th minute to mark his senior team debut.

The decisive moment came in the 74th minute with Omedi setting up Shaban to tap home and send the fans into wild celebrations.

Omedi raced for a long ball from Byaruhanga and calmly slotted the ball at the near post for onrushing Shaban to tap home.

The team thereafter defended resiliently to claim all three points.

Uganda Cranes will return to action on Monday with another home fixture against Algeria.

After eight days of rigorous training, all in place and perfect shape to deliver the best results for Ugandans who have missed seeing the National Team at its fortress in five years.

While addressing the media on Thursday in a press conference held at FUFA Complex, Mengo, Uganda Cranes Head Coach Paul Put expressed his satisfaction with preparations and believes his troops are in the right shape.

“We are set for the game against Botswana and the players are all in the right shape mentally and physically to put up the best performance,” he said.

Asked about the composition of his squad having several home based players, Put believes everyone on the team is able to perform at this level.

“It doesn’t matter where a player is based here or playing abroad. As a coach, I always look out for performance and attitude in training. I believe everyone has the ability to perform when given an opportunity to play.”

The gaffer confirmed captain Khalid Aucho is ruled out of the game against Botswana due to injury.

However, he indicated there will be further medical assessments done to see if the skipper can feature in Monday’s game against Algeria.

Aucho who also attended the press briefing remains unfazed that he will not be available for selection but rather expressed the unity of the team.

“We are one family and not even my absence can dent our targets. Definitely coming back to Namboole is enough motivation for everyone on the team to make sure we come out victorious,” he said.

“Since joining camp, the belief and mentality is good and every player is focused ahead of the two games.” Aucho added.

Forward Rogers Kassim Mato who had travel document issues will join the team on Friday. He will not feature against Botswana but will be available for the game against Algeria.

Uganda has three points from the opening two games. The first game ended in a 1-0 loss to Guinea while the Uganda Cranes were able to win 1-0 against Somalia.
