AFCON 2025: Bobosi Byaruhanga on the journey so-far

Uganda Cranes midfielder Bobosi Byaruhanga has spoken with calm confidence and purpose as the team continues preparations for TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 in Morocco. The player shared his reflections on growth, motivation and the pride of representing the nation at the highest stage.

He noted that earning a place in the final squad carries deep meaning, especially after progressing through the different national team levels.

‘First of all, it is a pleasure being among the players that are going to represent Uganda in AFCON. I would say I am very happy and so far I have passed through the national team level, so I know what it means being part of this team. When I am given an opportunity, I have to make sure that the team can get the win.’

Byaruhanga also spoke about the dream he has carried since childhood.

‘So far, when I was too young, my dream was to play for the Uganda Cranes. Ever since I was little, my dream was to play for the Uganda Cranes. I have been on this team trying to qualify for AFCON.’

He added that playing at the continental showpiece comes with responsibility.

‘Now it is the right time for AFCON. It is the time to represent Uganda in AFCON. So when I am given an opportunity, I know what it means to play at AFCON level. Everyone’s dream is to play AFCON because AFCON has a lot of good players all over the world.’

Byaruhanga recalled his debut and the guidance he received from senior teammates.

‘The first time I played for the national team, my debut was in Kenya. I was young, I never thought that I was going to play and I was given an opportunity. But all the senior players on the team really motivated me. Aucho, Ochaya, Juma, they really motivated me and I felt at home.’

As the team continues its AFCON build-up, the midfielder expressed gratitude for remaining part of the Uganda Cranes setup.

‘Up to now, I am still here in the national team.’

The Uganda Cranes will continue their preparations in Morocco, with two buildup matches lined up as part of the team’s final tune-up for the tournament.

AFCON buildup matches for Uganda Cranes will include Uganda against FAR Rabat on 13th December 2025 and Uganda against Gabon on 17th December 2025. FAR Rabat is currently competing in the CAF Champions League.

Uganda Cranes forward Rogers Mato has described his first day of training at the TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 camp in Morocco as a moment of fulfilment and national pride. Speaking after the session, he expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to represent Uganda on the continent’s biggest stage.

‘Yeah, it is a dream come true to be a part of this team, this wonderful team, with some experienced players and some upcoming players. I feel grateful, I feel honoured to come and honour my country, it is a pleasure being here.’

He emphasised the significance of the tournament for both the nation and the next generation of footballers.

‘Yeah, it is a good one for us, for the nation and for the upcoming generations, upcoming talents, the rising stars. It is good for us to come and be part of this tournament.’

Mato also reflected on the personal importance of the moment, comparing AFCON to other major competitions he has featured in.

‘It is one of the biggest tournaments I have ever played, because I have played in the Conference League, which is a big tournament as well. The African Cup of Nations is a big tournament, it is one of the big names in the world, so it is a big tournament and a big achievement for me as a person and for my career.’

  • TotalEnergies AFCON 2025: Put on team preparations ahead of the tournament

TotalEnergies AFCON 2025: Put on team preparations ahead of the tournament

Uganda Cranes Head Coach Paul Put addressed the media shortly after the team’s arrival in Morocco and offered a measured assessment of the opening days of camp, the revised preparation schedule, young players and FUFA’s long-term technical direction. His reflections combined realism with optimism as the team begins the final phase of readiness for the TotalEnergies AFCON 2025.

    On uncertainty and early complications

Paul Put opened his assessment by acknowledging the inevitable unpredictability that surrounds tournament preparation. He noted that injuries and minor complications had already influenced the opening days of camp. Despite this, he expressed confidence in the group and their collective growth over the last two years.

‘It is always difficult to say because you never know what can happen with injuries. We have a few complications but I am confident in the players. They have been improving and this is a nice opportunity to show themselves as a team.’

He emphasised that the tournament in Morocco carries significant attention and therefore presents a platform capable of shifting individual careers.

On players deserving a strong performance

Put said the squad deserves a tournament where their work can translate into meaningful results. He added that the global exposure of AFCON gives players a chance to shape the direction of their future.

‘They can show themselves to the whole world and maybe change their life. It would be nice to perform very well because they deserve it.’

On FUFA’s technical vision and the assistant coach structure

One of the major themes at the briefing was long-term technical continuity. Put welcomed FUFA’s direction of integrating a younger local assistant coach who can serve the team for many years. He contrasted this with other African settings where coaches frequently arrive with full personal staffs.

‘I prefer to get a local coach who knows the local players. It is FUFA’s vision to have somebody young for the future. If you change the head coach one day then you have someone who knows the internal kitchen and understands the players.’

On FIFA’s late directive and the impact on camp planning

The most disruptive issue has been the sudden communication from FIFA indicating that foreign-based players can only join camp on 16 or 17 December. Put explained that this significantly damaged the original preparation framework.

‘We received a message from FIFA that we can only have the players abroad on the 16th or 17th. I had hoped to get them from the 8th. Now we will be with half the team until then.’

This directly affects the two scheduled friendly matches: FAR Rabat on 13 December and Gabon on 17 December. With only fifteen players available up to the second match, Put said he cannot adjust tactics or rotate as he would normally do.

‘It becomes very difficult to make good preparation but we will deal with it. It is unfortunate but it is like this.’

    On disrupted tactical planning

Put noted that tournament build-up normally allows extended work on tactical and technical structures. However, the restricted squad numbers now mirror the short turnaround seen during qualification windows.

‘All the plans you make for months move far away. You prepare yourself mentally and you brief the players on what to improve. Now it becomes the same as qualification because there is no time.’

    On young players and development

The coach highlighted the importance of giving opportunities to local talent and referenced his earlier work with players such as Bogore during the cancelled CHAN build-up. He also praised Uganda’s under-17 group and their individual progress.

‘You can be a great talent at seventeen but that gives no guarantee. The big work starts then. The environment, discipline and people around you matter.’

He said Bogore deserved inclusion and that such players benefit from exposure within senior setups.

    On difficult selection calls

Put admitted that the combination of FIFA’s adjustments and uncertainty over certain key players forced changes in the final list. He expressed regret for those left out but noted that selection often shifts quickly.

‘I had to disappoint some players and it hurts me. But if some positions are not 100% sure then you must add players in that area. But I want to encourage all the players who are not selected this time to keep the courage to continue with hard work, because in football you never know, and tomorrow it can be totally different.’

  • Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League: Makerere University FC End Warriors Unbeaten Streak To Open Up Title Race

Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League: Makerere University FC End Warriors Unbeaten Streak To Open Up Title Race

Matchday 10 delivered a decisive round of six fixtures, setting the tone for a crucial finish to the end of the first round. A tantalizing title race has arrived as we approach the halfway point of the season. Only two points separate the top two after Makerere beat Kawempe as the sharks won again.

Here is the full round-up of the weekend’s action.

Makerere University WFC brings Kawempe’s unbeaten run to an end.

Makerere university WFC delivered one of their most complete performances of the season to hand Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC their first defeat of the season, winning 2-0 in a tightly contested encounter.

From outset, Makerere signaled their intent with a compact defensive shape anchored by Captain Josephine Ndagire denying the warriors early rhythm, something the hosts rarely struggle with at home. While kawempe created many of their own problems in the first half. You simply have to give credit to Makerere too, they were organized, well drilled and willing to press and hassle the warriors into errors.

When the moment came, Nankya Rashida struck in the 19th minute from a defensive scramble to spark jubilant scenes to the away dug out, four minutes later, Captain Josephine Ndagire doubled the visitors lead to ensure a 2-0 advantage at the break.

As the game transpired, kawempe increased their tempo after the break, pushing higher and committing numbers forward but the visitor’s ability to absorb pressure was key. Their midfield shape remained compact, preventing the host’s dangerous players from operating between the lines. Fred Ndawula will be much happier with the woman of the match Grace Nassande who pulled off outstanding saves when the warriors applied more pressure and the team’s defensive unit, as the full backs closed spaces quickly and the center-halves dominating aerial duels to ensure a well-deserved victory.

The full-time scenes left the warriors frustrated but Fred’s side will deeply take much pride for inflicting the first defeat to the league leaders.

She Corporate FC edge a five-goal thriller as Olila’s late fight back falls short.

She corporate FC survived a late scare to defeat Olila H/S WFC 3-2 in a dramatic encounter at FUFA TC, Njeru. The sharks scoring spree continued as they notched three goals in two successive games, securing a third straight victory for Bayles’s side leaving them just two points off the top spot.

League top scorer Jesca Namanda kept up her fine scoring form, netting her 8th goal of the season giving the sharks a well-deserved lead in the 16th minute. Despite Olila settling into the game as the half progressed, the sharks maintained their advantage.

The second half saw the hosts regain the initiative, as Hairat Babirye doubled the lead in the 74th minute, capitalizing on sustained pressure in the final third.

However, the visitors responded immediately, Brenda Atwani struck twice in quick succession to drag Olila back into the contest. Woman of the match Sandra Kisakye who was a creative menace throughout the game stole the show with a stoppage time winner to ultimately seal a crucial victory.

Kampala Queens suffer another setback with a draw against Amus College.

Kampala Queens needed a penalty midway through the second half to salvage a 1-1 draw with Amus College WFC at Amus College Stadium.

Catherine Nagadya calmly scored from the spot five minutes after the half-hour mark, Edinah Nasipwondi had earlier put the hosts into a much-deserved lead in the 35th minute.

The opening half was dominated by the hosts, as the Queens produced little to trouble the hosts. Firew must be increasingly concerned by his defense in recent weeks. Once again Marion struggled to deal with an aerial ball, allowing Esther Namataka to pounce and slip a pass through to Edinah, who finished clinically past Sharon Kaidu to mark her sixth goal of the season.

In the second half, Precious Phiri replaced Marrion giving the queens renewed defensive stability and added attacking intent. The change paid off in the 65th minute when muduwa was brought down in the box, and Nagadya calmly converted the resulting penalty. In truth, the Queens should have wrapped up the victory, but lack of composure in front of goal proved costly.

Lady Doves, Uganda Martyrs return to winning ways with big margins.

Uganda Martyrs secured a commanding 4-0 victory over Asubo Ladies FC at Kampala Quality Ground. Kiiza Maureen opened the scoring, with Auki Kigongo adding a second to give the visitors a firm grip on the match. Nusulah Nakintu extended the lead before Nabowa Shallon completed the scoring.  The hosts struggled to contain the visitor’s organized build-up and attacking movement, while Uganda Martyrs maintained control throughout the encounter.

At Katusabe Ground in Masindi, Lady Doves produced a confident display on home turf, easing past Rines SS with a 4-0 victory. Sumaya Nsisi opened the scoring inside the first minute, setting the tone for a standout performance in which she netted twice. Cecelia Apiding added the other goal, before Resty Kobusobozi sealed the result with a composed finish. The visitors struggled to cope with the believer’s tempo and efficiency in the final third, as the hosts managed the game effectively from start to finish. The result provides Lady Doves with a much-needed boost after a run of unconvincing results. Sumaya Nsisi was named woman of the match.

Meanwhile at Prison Ground, She Maroons FC’s impressive home run continued with a 2-0 victory against St Noa Girls-Zana FC, lifting them into fourth place on the table. The hosts took a lead when a defensive mix-up resulted in Nancy Mandera turning the ball into her own net. The hosts continued to apply pressure, and their persistence paid off when woman of the match Lillian Kasuubo profited from a set piece to seal a crucial victory.

  • Press conference held ahead of the CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA Qualifiers 2025

Press conference held ahead of the CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA Qualifiers 2025

A press conference ahead of the start of the CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA Qualifiers 2025 took place today at the FUFA Stadium Kadiba. FUFA First Vice President and LOC Chairperson Justus Mugisha together with the CECAFA Head of Marketing and Communications Andrew Oryada addressed the media. The briefing set the tone for the competition and highlighted Uganda’s readiness to host the regional schools’ championship for the second consecutive year.

In his remarks, Mr Mugisha reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to the development of school sport and expressed gratitude to CAF for strengthening youth football across the continent.

Mr Mugisha stated that Uganda was honoured to host the championship for the second year running. He said that the country valued school sport and continued to invest in better structures and opportunities for young footballers.

‘As Uganda, we are very happy that we are hosting this championship for the second time in a row. We are also very happy for the fact that it is a school sport and we are hosting it in one of the best venues both for accommodation and for competition in the school facilities at St Mary’s Stadium. St Mary’s Stadium is going to be the main venue but we are also very happy that we are using the federation facilities and our FUFA Stadium Kadiba to host these games.’

He noted that the government and FUFA prioritise school football development, which has enabled Uganda to register continued progress on the regional and continental stage.

‘Uganda takes school sport very seriously and I think that is why we are doing very well. If there is anything I can say there is a lot of gratitude to Motsepe for becoming CAF President because the problem with Africa has always been that we may be talented but we start the journey of football late.’

He highlighted the importance of CAF’s investment in youth football structures and commended the introduction of competitions at younger age groups.

‘The fact that we now have Under 15 with a lot of energy invested means we shall see improvement in African sport as far as football is concerned. My message to all participating countries is that they should not only look at participating at regional and African level. They should put particular emphasis at the grassroots and in the zones.’

Mr Mugisha encouraged all nations to ensure compliance with age verification and coaching standards.

‘The other thing is to make sure that we play the right age and have the right coaches. We are happy with CAF because it is not only about sport or competition. The programmes which come with this championship are very good.’

He further revealed that Uganda had benefited greatly from the CAF Schools Championship capacity-building initiatives.

‘In Uganda we have taken advantage of the programmes. In the last three years after running them from CAF we have trained many referees, many coaches and also young reporters. It is now a programme in schools and I want to thank the government because it works with the Federation and the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association to ensure that this programme is a success.’

Mr Mugisha concluded by expressing confidence in Uganda’s ability to stage a successful event.

‘You are welcome and I am sure that we are going to have a very successful championship. Uganda has been performing very well in the last tournaments and we hope that Uganda will again make us proud. Thank you so much.’

  • Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League: High stakes as matchday 10 is set to kick-off

Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League: High stakes as matchday 10 is set to kick-off

The penultimate match-week of the first round of the 2025/2026 season is scheduled to take place this weekend. The inaugural phase has delivered intriguing action, but the final phase promises even more excitement, with teams battling for crucial points. Six fixtures are spread across two days, with two matches on Saturday and four encounters on Sunday.

On Saturday, She Maroons FC host St Noa Girls-Zana FC while She Corporate FC welcome Olila H/S WFC.

She Corporate FC will aim to keep their rivals and league leaders, Kawempe Muslim Ladies in sight when they welcome Olila H/S WFC to FUFA TC, Njeru, aiming to capitalize on home advantage and gain valuable ground in the standings.  The title chasers come into this fixture with momentum and hope after stunning reigning champions Kampala Queens last time out, the sharks have rediscovered their form that defined their strong opening rounds. Gillian’s return to the midfield has transformed the sharks, injecting creativity and control into their game, right back Rebecca Nandhego is also providing attacking width and forward momentum, Jesca Namanda is seizing her opportunities. However, visitors Olila will be geared towards frustrating the sharks at every turn, with key players Mary Lotyang and Grace Aluka poised to exploit spaces and create chances in the final third. The hosts might have an upper hand but Olila will definitely give them a run for their money, they’ll be a tough opponent.

At Prison Ground, Luzira, She Maroons FC with a strong home record will be looking to capitalize on their favorite status, led by Lillian Kasuubo, who has been impressive in the first round to pick maximum points against St Noa Girls-Zana FC who are dealing with the aftermath of a dugout change having parted ways with Tonny Mawejje in the midweek, which could either fire them up or throw them off their game – it will be interesting to see how they respond.

On Sunday, Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC host Makerere University WFC, Kampala Queens FC travel East to face Amus College WFC, Asubo Ladies FC take on Uganda Martyrs WFC while Lady Doves FC welcome Rines SS WFC.

League leaders Kawempe Muslim Ladies will aim to extend their unbeaten run when they host Makerere University WFC at Kawempe Muslim SS Ground. The warriors have won eight consecutive games, a truly extraordinary run that has put them five points clear at the top of the table. But beyond results, they have been brilliant to watch, they are winning in a fashion that provides a huge lift for everyone connected with the club. The warriors are notably looking sharper in all departments but the presence of Krusum Namutebi has given Kawempe industrious energy and allowed the team to dominate midfield battles while making room for Dorcus Kisakye to operate swiftly in tight spaces to break low blocks. This will be crucial for the warriors again, as Makerere will likely employ a physical approach to frustrate their rhythm. Former warriors Halima Kampi and Allen Nassazi will be looking to make a statement against their old team, which could give Makerere a much-needed boost and add an extra layer of intensity to the matchup. A win for the warriors will secure their position as table leaders at the end of the first round.

At Amus College Stadium, Amus College WFC’s home form will get another test as they host defending champions Kampala Queens FC, buoyed by the return of Shayline Opisa from international duty with Harambe Starlets. Coach Frank Anyau’s tactics of a stubborn low block could potentially make this game a banana skin for the Queens who are currently experiencing a tough run, having suffered back-to-back defeats. Firew is struggling to create a tactical set up that allows his side to build from the back, however, his immediate task is to restore the energy and confidence levels of the queens, ensuring the recent setbacks don’t get into their heads ahead of this crucial encounter. The Queens wide forwards have been in top form and could be boasted by the return of Kamiyati Naigaga from injury, but last week’s result at Lugogo provided evidence about their defensive frailties but also showcased their abilities to create chances and score goals. To take points against Amus, they will have to address their defensive vulnerabilities and be more clinical in front of goal.  A win by any means will be essential, should they fail to take points from this game, the queens morale could face a serious hit.

Meanwhile, Lady Doves FC will look to stabilize their campaign with a home fixture against Rines SS WFC at Katusabe Ground. The believers biggest undoing has been the failure to leverage their home advantage, a factor they strongly capitalized on in the recent seasons for success, another concern is their reliance on Resty, who’s scored six of their nine goals this season, highlighting the need to diversify their scoring options. They face an ambitious side, that plays with a direct and relentless style, and keenly focused on gathering vital points to distance themselves from the relegation zone.  It’s another tough test for Lady Doves, but home advantage could be the deciding factor.

Elsewhere, the match between Asubo Ladies FC and Uganda Martyrs H/S WFC promises to be a closely contested affair, with both teams seeking to secure vital points to bolster their position and distance themselves from the drop zone. While Asubo Ladies FC is expected to be formidable on home soil, the visitor’s energetic and youthful squad presents a significant challenge making them tough opponents. This promises to be a tight contest.

  • Player Spotlight: Jesca Namanda – In Her Own Words, My Hat-Trick Against Kampala Queens is My Best Moment So Far

Player Spotlight: Jesca Namanda – In Her Own Words, My Hat-Trick Against Kampala Queens is My Best Moment So Far

The Player Spotlight is a feature by the FUFA Communications Department that offers bold and in-depth conversation with female footballers. It explores mindset, motivation, defining moments and personal reflections. The segment reveals the person behind the player.

In this week’s feature, we sat down with hat-trick hero and current Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League top scorer Jesca Namanda to take us behind the scenes of her football journey.

FUFA COMM:  Can you start by telling us how you developed passion for football in your early stages and your journey to becoming a professional footballer?

JESCA: I hail from a family with a strong footballing background, with both parents being former players and my siblings are actively involved in the sport. That environment naturally fostered my interest in football at an early age. I began playing in primary school, then joined Progressive SS Kawanda, where I was scouted by Luweero Giant Queens. My career then progressed to Rines SS WFC, followed by a brief stint at Fountain Gates in Tanzania, prior to joining my current club, She Corporate FC.

FUFA COMM: To whom do you attribute your inspiration in your career thus far, and how have they influenced your journey?

JESCA: My family is a constant source of inspiration to me; their unwavering support means everything to me. Additionally, I’m also deeply grateful to Coach Edward Lugoloobi who played a huge role in my career. He introduced me to women’s football and helped me to join Luweero Giant Queens. Am so grateful for their guidance and mentorship.

FUFA COMM: Who is your football idol and which player would you love to share the pitch with?

JESCA:  I am a great admirer of Man United WFC striker, Melvine Malard, as she possesses exceptional skills and qualities that make her a remarkable player.

Additionally, I have always been impressed by Phiona Nabbumba’s performance on the pitch, particularly her ability to effectively distribute the ball to teammates. it would be a great experience to share the pitch with her.

FUFA COMM:  You recently renewed your contract at She Corporate FC, what do you enjoy most about playing for this team, and what makes you proud to wear the shark’s jersey?

JESCA:  I am delighted to be part of the She Corporate FC family. It’s a prestigious club that presents a significant opportunity for my career advancement. The team’s ambitions are inspiring. I extend my gratitude to the club chairman, Mr. kaweere Richard for fostering a productive and supportive environment.

FUFA COMM: What is the best moment of your career to date?

JESCA: The hat-trick I scored against Kampala Queens remains one of my notable achievements to date. Given the team’s stature and strength, scoring three goals against them was a significant accomplishment, it’s a challenging task that few players have managed to achieve.

FUFA COMM: What is your favorite goal you’ve scored so far, and what made it so special?

JESCA: The goal I scored against Lady Doves FC at our home stadium last season remains a highlight of my career. Its holds great significance as it was a long-range strike executed with my weaker foot. I take considerable pride in it.

FUFA COMM: What are your individual goals for the rest of the season and how do you hope to achieve them?

JESCA: This season, I set three targets for myself. Firstly, I aimed to score at least one hat-trick in the first round, which I have successfully achieved. Secondly, I strive to become the top scorer, I currently lead the scoring chart, which motivates me to intensify my efforts. My ultimate goal, however, is to lead my team to league victory this season – it’s a team effort, and I’m committed to giving in my all.

FUFA COMM: What do you like to do in your free time, and how do you relax away from football?

JESCA: Football is an integral part of my leisure activities, and I devote a significant portion of my free time to watching matches and viewing footage of prominent strikers.

FUFA COMM: What advice would you give to young girls who want to become footballers?

JESCA: To all young girls out there, put in the hard work, have faith in your abilities and stay disciplined. If you stick to these principles, football can be a game-changer in your life.

  • Uganda Cubs fall short in the CECAFA U-17 final after sealing qualification for the U-17 AFCON

Uganda Cubs fall short in the CECAFA U-17 final after sealing qualification for the U-17 AFCON

The Uganda Cubs were defeated 3–2 by Tanzania U-17 in the U-17 AFCON CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers final played on Tuesday afternoon at the Abebe Bikila Stadium. Despite the loss, the Cubs achieved their primary objective by securing qualification for the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations 2026 through their place in the final.

Tanzania started the match strongly and took control early, scoring all three of their goals during the first half. Uganda responded with determination, equalising in the thirteenth minute through Thomas Ogema, who finished calmly after pressing hard a Tanzania defender who had recieved a poor pass from his goalkeeper a few meters off the penalty area, dribbled off another defender and the goalkeeper too before slot home the ball at the far side of goal. The goal lifted the Cubs’ confidence, and they enjoyed a positive spell, creating opportunities before Tanzania restored their lead and added a third before the interval.

Uganda continued to push for a comeback in the second half, maintaining pressure in attacking areas and creating several openings. Their persistence was rewarded in the sixth minute of added time when Brian Olwa struck a powerful finish to reduce the deficit to 3–2. Despite this late spark, the Cubs were unable to find an equaliser, with Tanzania holding on to secure the victory.

The Cubs had earned their place in the final following a commanding 3–0 victory over hosts Ethiopia in the semifinal. Lorian Lwesibawa scored twice, including a well-struck free-kick in the seventy-eighth minute, while Thomas Ogema added the other goal. That win not only confirmed Uganda’s qualification for next year’s U-17 AFCON but also reinforced the team’s strong record at this level.

Although the Uganda Cubs’ title defence ended in the final, the team concluded the tournament with qualification secured and valuable experience gained ahead of the continental finals. Preparations will now shift towards building a competitive squad for the U-17 AFCON as they aim to make a strong impression on the continental stage.

  • Kingston reflects on Uganda Cubs’ qualification to the U-17 AFCON after Ethiopia victory

Kingston reflects on Uganda Cubs’ qualification to the U-17 AFCON after Ethiopia victory

The Uganda Cubs sealed qualification to the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 AFCON 2026 and progressed to the final of the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers after defeating Ethiopia 3–0 on Sunday.

Head Coach Laryea Kingston addressed the media after the match, discussing the result, the conditions, his players’ development and the team’s evolving style of play.

    Read every word below.

On the importance of the win and the strength of CECAFA opponents

First of all, I think this is a very competitive tournament. I have said before that I respect everything within this competition. Some teams are stronger than others, and I would mention two that have impressed me the most, which are Ethiopia and Tanzania. For me, it is fair to say that all three countries deserve to represent CECAFA because they are doing the right things in their development. Ethiopia are doing the right thing, Tanzania are doing amazing work, and we are progressing well as a group.

On why the team struggled to play their usual style

I believe in keeping the ball. I do not believe in long balls unless they serve a clear purpose. I always want my team to play. However, the pitch did not help us. The ball was bouncing throughout the game and that made it difficult to execute what we planned. Dira Dawa had an amazing pitch and an amazing surface, and if we want to educate young players and prepare them to compete in Europe or the World Cup, we must give them good facilities. I told my backroom staff before the game that moving the ball would be difficult, and it showed.

On Muhoozi’s performance and his development

Muhoozi is an adorable kid. I remember very well when the players were first presented for selection. He came in as an attacking player, but based on the way I want the team to play, I needed someone who can take care of the ball in tight spaces and make things happen. Out of the sixty-six players I assessed, no one could do that role better than him. When I dropped him to the number six position there were critics, but every coach is different. A player Guardiola will sign may not be one Mourinho will sign. For me, my number six must be excellent on the ball, and he fits that description. He is smart, he takes care of the ball and he has a very good future.

On building the team’s playing identity

We have a long way to go and we have a detailed style of playbook that covers many phases. With the limited time we have, I must prioritise short-term basics. That means making sure the players understand a few key concepts in the build-up, then progressing gradually into the attacking phases. Defensively we reverse the process and simplify everything. I give the credit to the players because not every young player learns quickly, but these boys surprised me. I kept telling my backroom staff how impressed I was.

On adapting within a short preparation period

Five days without the team scared me. I was not sure if they would understand the ideas I was bringing. We need time to build a clear style, and I was concerned whether they would grasp the new concepts within such a short period. But from the first whistle of the competition they proved that they are intelligent, willing to learn and can be well coached. That has been the most encouraging part of this journey so far.

  • Uganda Cubs qualify for U-17 AFCON 2026 after defeating hosts Ethiopia in Zonal semifinal

Uganda Cubs qualify for U-17 AFCON 2026 after defeating hosts Ethiopia in Zonal semifinal

The Uganda Cubs have secured qualification for the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations 2026 after defeating hosts Ethiopia 3–0 in the semifinal of the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers on Sunday at the Abebe Bikila Stadium. The result confirms Uganda’s place among the three regional representatives at the continental tournament.

Uganda produced a disciplined and progressive performance, with all three goals arriving in the second half. Lorian Lwesibawa opened the scoring in the fifty second minute with a sharp finish after sustained attacking pressure. Two minutes later Thomas Ogema doubled the lead with a composed effort that strengthened Uganda’s control of the match.

The Cubs continued to dominate proceedings and sealed the victory in the seventy eighth minute. Lwesibawa struck again with a well taken free kick. His curling effort evaded the defenders and flew into the net to complete a deserved brace and confirm Uganda’s dominance.

Uganda’s defensive organisation remained firm throughout the contest and limited Ethiopia’s opportunities in the final third.

Earlier in the day Tanzania became the first CECAFA nation to qualify for the U-17 AFCON after defeating Kenya 3–1 in the opening semifinal. With both finalists earning automatic qualification alongside the bronze medallist Uganda’s victory placed them among the qualified teams before the final.

The result sets up a Uganda versus Tanzania final which will be played on Tuesday 2nd December at 3.30 pm at the Abebe Bikila Stadium. As defending champions Uganda will seek to retain the title and close the campaign in the strongest possible fashion.

  • Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League: Matchday 9 Wrap Up

Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League: Matchday 9 Wrap Up

We look back on a thrilling weekend that featured huge wins for Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC, She Corporate FC including Jesca Namanda’s hat-trick and four stalemates.

Here is the full round-up of the weekend’s action.

Jesca Namanda’s hat-trick stuns Kampala Queens.

Lethal forward Jesca Namanda was the hero as She Corporate FC produced an inspired performance to stun champions Kamapala Queens FC  3-2 in a five-goal thriller at MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo. Jesca’s second-half hattrick handed Kampala Queens their first home defeat of the season.

In the build-up to the game, there was a notable rivalry between the two sides, and the game certainly lived to the billing. Kampala Queens head coach Firew Asefa implemented adjustments to the defensive shape, deploying Marrion Amangat in a central partnership with Esther Namusoke, while Captain Shakira Nankwanga assumed a role of shielding the defense. This tactical setup effectively meant that the queens began the match with a five-player defense line, a strategy evident throughout the first half, as the visitors dominated more possession and posed the greater attacking threat despite both teams creating limited scoring opportunities.

In the second half, similar to the previous encounter, the queens lack of defensive cohesion proved costly, with the sharks’ forwards expertly exploiting these lapses. Their pressing strategy disrupted the hosts attempts to build from the back, gifting the visitors two quick goals after the restart. Jesca Namanda opened the scoring in the 46th minute and scored a penalty six minutes later. Marrion pulled one back for the hosts, but Jesca quickly responded to restore the two-goal cushion. Kampala queens gave themselves hope six minutes past the hour-mark, Catherine Nagadya scored and mounted a more pronounced attacking threat pushing hard for an equalizer, but the sharks defense held firm, securing a 3-2 win.

The result gave She Corporate an enormous psychological lift in their title ambitions, while Firew Asefa’s side would not have been preparing for back-to-back defeats after making an impressive start to the campaign. Firew needs to find a way to raise the team’s energy levels to reignite their form in the final two first round fixtures.

    What the coaches said:

‘I give credit to the opponents; they were more determined. we will review our performance and make the necessary adjustments,’ Sharon Kizza – Kampala Queens FC.

‘At half time, we identified the opponent’s tactic of building from the back, with countered this with more pressing, we scored three goals and secured important three points,’ Pande Cifu – She Corporate FC.

Dorcus Kisakye stars as Kawempe ease past Asubo Ladies.

Kawempe Muslim Ladies reinforced their solid campaign with a 3-0 victory against Asubo Ladies FC at St Mary’s Stadium, kitende. Agnes Nabukenya, Dorcus Kisakye and Asia Nakibuuka each scored a goal, securing the warriors 8th consecutive victory and maintaining their unbeaten record this season.

The warriors started brightly, as an already difficult task for Asubo ladies became tougher two minutes in, Agnes Nabukenya curled a powerful freekick past goalkeeper Olga Lukia to set the tone of proceedings. Asubo Ladies implemented a game plan aimed at frustrating the warriors, to which the latter responded by controlling possession and kept looking for openings. In truth, kawempe Muslim should have gone into half-time with more than one goal to the good, but Agnes Nabukenya’s failure to convert a penalty midway through the first half and the attacking unit’s wasted chances precluded this.

During the second half, the warriors dominance continued, with the visitors having limited time on the ball, woman of the match Dorcus Kisakye who has already endeared herself to the warriors fans since winning a spot in the starting XI this season cemented her place in their hearts with a precise finish from a brilliant team move to double the warriors lead in the 75th minute,  two minutes later, Asia Nakibuuka sealed the 3-0 win for the hosts, lobbing the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper off Samalie’s brilliant pass. The result laid a significant marker as the title race takes shape. It’s a long run but the talk is likely turning to kawempe to win the title.

    Four fixtures end in stalemates.

At Makerere University ground, Resty Kobusobozi scored her sixth goal of the season, giving Lady Doves FC a 1-0 halftime lead. However, Halima Kampi scored a penalty in the second half, rescuing a point for the home team, Makerere University WFC. The match was marked by limited chances, with both teams opting for long balls and creating few scoring opportunities. The believers star player Resty Kobusobozi was named the woman of the match.

Meanwhile, Rines SS WFC salvaged a point in stoppage time, scoring the equalizer in a 1-1 draw against Amus College WFC at Kabaka Kyabaggu stadium. Esther Namataka had given the visitors the lead at halftime with a precise finish, but Prossy Akasa’s late goal denied them the third straight win. Amus College captain Tamisi Shafiga was named woman of the match.

Olila H/S WFC and She Maroons FC settled for a 1-1 draw at Olila Ground in soroti. The visitors took an early lead through Lillian Kasuubo’s impressive spot kick, but the hosts quickly equalized through Atwani Brenda, and the teams went into half time at a deadlock. The second half was a highly contested affair, but neither team could find the breakthrough, the score remained unchanged. Ayuro Daphine of Olila was named woman of the match.

Meanwhile, the match between St Noa Girls-Zana FC and Uganda Martyrs H/S WFC at Muteesa II Stadium ended in a goalless draw. The result highlighted the Lubaga based side resilient performance, securing a draw against an opponent that had demonstrated strong from in their preceding two matches. Angel Auki Kigongo was named the Woman of the match.

Kingston said ‘The qualification is the main priority for us.’ He expressed confidence in the team after their final training session, noting ‘Looking at my team, the energy they are bringing on board is impressive. If they put in 50% of what they have done so far, I think we are going to carry the game.’

He reiterated Uganda’s attacking identity, stating ‘Our style is to attack the opponent, dominate play, and tomorrow is not going to be any different.’ Kingston also stressed the developmental aspect of the programme, saying ‘Winning is important and qualification is important, but the main focus for us is to see our boys developing well and doing the right things on the field.’

Despite Ethiopia’s home support, Kingston remained unfazed and concluded that once the match starts, ‘It is only eleven on the pitch.’

The Cubs enter today’s semifinal with belief, momentum and a clear mission: to qualify for the AFCON finals and extend Uganda’s proud record in the region.

The first round of the 2025-2026 is entering its climax. Matchday 9 is shaping up to be a pivotal moment, with teams and players pushing to hit their targets. Six fixtures are spread across the weekend, with four matches on Saturday and two on Sunday.

On Saturday, Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC host Asubo Ladies FC, Makerere University WFC welcome Lady Doves FC, Rines SS FC take on Amus College WFC while Olila H/S WFC entertain She Maroons FC.

League leaders Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC will aim to extend their impressive seven-game winning streak when they host Asubo Ladies FC at St Mary’s Stadium Kitende, hoping to maintain their unbeaten run in the league. Historically, this fixture has been challenging for the warriors, but timing is on their side – they are riding high on confidence, while the visitors form has been concerning in the recent weeks.

Asubo ladies gameplan will likely involve sitting deep to frustrate the hosts, but the warriors have been brilliant in finding pockets of space this season. Dorcus Kisakye will be crucial, using her skills to navigate tight spaces and unlock the visitors defense, while Asubo Ladies will be counting on their historical advantage to pull off a surprise.

At Makerere University Ground, Makerere University WFC hosts Lady Doves FC aiming to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat. After mixed campaigns, the home side will rely on individual brilliance from Josephine Ndagire, Allen Nassazi and Kampi Halima to secure a crucial win. Lady Doves, on the other hand will aim to revive their season but they will need to fix their issues on the road. Resty Kobusozi’s impressive form will be crucial for the believers, offering a glimmer of hope as they look upset Makerere in their own backyard.

Rines SS WFC will hope to reignite their wining form at home against Amus College WFC at Kabaka Kyabaggu stadium, aiming to get back on track after a recent setback. With their direct football being a big threat at home, they will be hoping to get the desired result.  But that won’t come easy, as they are facing a side that is in fine form and flying high after Edina’s hat-trick heroics last weekend – their swift counter attacks will be a major threat to the hosts.

Still on Saturday, She Maroons FC will make a long trip to soroti to face Olila H/S WFC at Olila Ground.  The hosts find themselves in a tough zone, still searching for that elusive win. However, at home, they are always a threat and they will be relying on Captain Mary Lotyang to revive their season. However, the visitors are riding high after that convincing win over the defending Champions last weekend, momentum is on their side and they are looking strong. Maxwell Okello’s side will hope to get the job done in the process of beginning a journey to lift them to the top positions.

Matchday nine will conclude on Sunday with two fixtures, Kampala Queens FC host She Corporate FC while St Noa Girls-Zana FC welcome Uganda Martyrs H/S WFC

At MTN Omondi Stadium, two rivals will swing at each other when Kampala Queens FC host She Corporate FC in an epic clash.  A notable rivalry has developed between the two teams since 2021, when She Corporate secured the league title ahead of Kampala Queens on goal difference. Since then, this fixture has garnered significant attention. Both teams enter this fixture tied on 17 points with the home side above. A win in such a highly -pressured match will provide an enormous psychological lift in the title race for either side.

The hosts have been formidable at home, having secured maximum points from all their home fixtures this season, they are likely to miss the services of the league top scorer, Kamiyati Naigaga, who suffered an injury in the recent weeks but with the return of winger Catherine Nagadya, who missed the previous match due to suspension, the queens will be looking to leverage their home advantage and the pace of their attacking unit to secure a favorable outcome.

Meanwhile, whereas, there has been questions of lack of intent and attacking flair from the sharks in big games. In the previous game, long balls, aerial challenges, speed to second balls and highline defending caused Kampala queens all sorts of problems, the sharks will be more than happy to target these flaws. The attacking trio of Jesca Namanda, Sandra Kisakye and Rebecca Nakato will be crucial in She Corporates bid to take points from this match. With both teams evenly matched, this fixture promises to be a highly contested encounter.

Elsewhere, St Noa Girls-Zana FC will be looking to extend their winning streak to three games as they host Uganda Martyrs H/S WFC at Muteesa II stadium. The hosts have been formidable in the previous two games, garnering maximum points with two clean sheets.  Its up to Tonny Mawejje to show that St Noa can make good use of their recent form, a win will be crucial for them to secure a top-four finish ahead of the final two matches in the first round.

Uganda Martyrs on the other hand have showed glimpses of promise, but inconsistency has been an issue. If they can solidify their defense and capitalize on scoring opportunities, they could definitely pull off a surprise.
