Steven Mukwala: Life in Ghana, playing for Uganda Cranes and ready for World Cup duty

FUFA Communications has covered quite a number of national team stars while on international duty whenever they come together to represent their country.

With Uganda Cranes now in camp and ready to take on Botswana and Algeria on 7th June 2024 and 10th June 2024 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, FUFA caught up with Steven Desse Mukwala-a player who has raised his profile by hitting the goals in the Ghana Premier League with Asante Kotoko and now in the Uganda Cranes set up.

FUFA Communications: Welcome to the Uganda Cranes Camp. What does it mean to you to be part of such a set up on national team duty?

Steven Desse Mukwala: It is a great honour for me to be part of the National team duty. It is a dream for any player to represent their country. I am not different from others. The feeling and connection between me and playing for my country in unbelievable. I am humbled and just cannot wait to give in my all for my beloved country and the entire team.

FUFA Communications: You’re wearing a beaming smile right now. Is it about the goal you scored against Ghana or the life you are enjoying in the Ghana Premier League with Asante Kotoko?

Steven Desse Mukwala: The goal against Ghana was of course of great impact. It helped build my confidence in the national team colours and I am so glad I scored. The Ghana Premier league has been so amazing with memorable moments for me to take home everyday and my teammates. As a club we have had challenges but the Kotoko fans have been lovely to the team. I can attribute this smile to the love I get from Ghana and also being summoned by the head coach of the national team to camp.

FUFA Communications: What kind of character and qualities do you bring to the Uganda Cranes camp as a striker that the rest of the team players will learn form you?

Steven Desse Mukwala: I think right now I am hungry for more. The fire in me to score goals in every game is what I possess right now and that is something to look up to.

FUFA Communications: Share with us your football journey from childhood until to-date and how has it inspired other young players dreaming to reaching such heights.

Steven Desse Mukwala: My journey is very interesting and full of great stories to share. I started from Kasese as a very little boy. The passion was evident right from Childhood. But the story changed the day my mother took me to Edgars Youth Programme in Kampala. I can firmly say my football journey started from Edgars Soccer Academy. Throughout my teenage years Mr. Edgar Watson made me the beast that I am today. He is a fatherly figure in my life and he will always have a special place in my life. From Edgars to Vipers SC and then to Maroons, followed by stints in URA FC and then to Asante Kotoko. It has been a journey to relish. I have had many young people reaching out to me for advice. But all I tell them is to keep working hard and show great discipline throughout their pursuit for greatness in their football journeys.

I went to Gayaza Cambridge College and later on Kibuli SS. I left profound football memories in both schools.

FUFA Communications: What message are you sharing with the fans looking forward to seeing the Uganda Cranes at Namboole again for the first time since 2019?

Steven Desse Mukwala: I call upon all Ugandans with great passion for football to show up at Mandela National Stadium. The players are excited and know the value of these games starting with Botswana on Friday. We have bene away from home for almost five years without playing at Namboole and that is a long time. We re ready as a team to exhibit our very best. We will fight for the 6 points in the two games.

‘Although the team appeared fatigued due to the long season, we have had a week to recover and hopefully by Saturday the players will have rested enough and recovered. We also know the magnitude of the game thus we shall have to work hard to win the Cup. I am not under any pressure because I have won the trophy as a player and have also reached several finals as a coach especially in Somalia,” Mbalangu said.

“We are a different team from the one that played last weekend on the final day of the StarTimes UgandaPremierLeague. I want to assure our fans to be ready for a revamped team that is hungry for victory.” He added.

NEC FC Kavuma has the conviction that they have what it takes to emerge winners on Saturday.

“While this is our maiden appearance at the final, we are feeling remarkably calm and composed due to the presence of experienced players who have been in such situations and also won the CUp. Their wealth of experience and winning mentality has eliminated any pressure allowing us to approach the final with confidence.” He stated.

On the the other hand, Kitara’s gaffer believes they have had a tough road to the final and winning on Saturday will bring satisfaction.

“Overcoming stiff competition from powerhouse teams like SC Villa and Vipers SC has been a valuable learning experience for us. By successfully navigating these challenging matches, we have emerged stronger and more resilient making us well prepared and confident as we head into the final.”

Omedi who has been key in Kitara’s journey is convinced the unity and teamwork that has brought them this far will once again help them come Saturday.

“I am thrilled to see our team’s unity and mindset. Our collective determination and winning mentality are palpable and it is clear that we are all driven to emerge victorious in the final.”

The winner of Stanbic Uganda Cup will get a cash prize of USH 50M while the runners up will pocket USH 25M.

It should be noted that each finalist is also guaranteed to receive 10 Zakayo balls.

The Winner will represent Uganda in the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

In sports, every athlete dreams of making history by breaking records and leaving a lasting legacy. They push themselves to go beyond their limits and achieve things that were considered impossible before.

As we gear up for the historic 50th edition of the Stanbic Uganda Cup to be played on Saturday, 25th May 2024, at the Muteesa II Memorial Stadium in Wankulukuku, we bring you the story of Paul Mucureezi who has reached a milestone by making it to his sixth Uganda Cup final. The Kigezi born player has lifted the trophy in three of the five finals he has played in and is looking forward to lifting his fourth with Kitara FC. Mucureezi has also contributed tremendously to his team reaching this stage including coverting three times against his former employers Vipers SC in at the quarter stage.

While speaking to www.fufa.co.ug, Mucureezi attributed this milestone to his dedication to leaving a legacy wherever he goes.

Reaching the sixth final is a great feeling and a big achievement in my career. I am so excited about it because reaching such a milestone isn’t a walk in the park. It calls for hard work, dedication and commitment’ said Mucureezi before adding ‘What has guided me is trying to maintain my performance since starting professional football with KCCA FC. Wherever I go, I try to put on a show with the intention of leaving a mark.

Speaking about the upcoming final against NEC FC on Saturday, 25th May 2024, he said that it will require teamwork from everyone at the club to win the Cup.

With this upcoming final, I’m only thinking about lifting the trophy. Though our opponents are also preparing for the same, we shall give our best as players under the guidance of our technical team with support from the administrators and our lovely fans.

In 2014, Mucureezi guided KCCA FC to his first career Uganda Cup final against SC Villa at Kyamate in a game which was replayed at Mandela National Stadium though his team lost 3-1. He guided KCCA again in 2017 where they beat Paidha Black Angels 2-0. In 2018, Mucureezi reached the final with KCCA FC in a game played at Emokori Grounds, Bukedea against Vipers and the Kasasiro boys won 1-0. His last final appearance was in 2021 against BUL FC where Vipers humiliated BUL FC with an 8-0 victory.
