  • Answers to the popular questions about Janzi and Zakayo

Answers to the popular questions about Janzi and Zakayo

On Friday 16th February 2024 at FUFA Complex in Mengo, FUFA launched Janzi as the official FUFA Sportswear manufacturer. Janzi produced the official FUFA matchball Zakayo and will also produce the official referees’ attire and other sports gear(equipment).

Football lovers enjoy debates and more so about those attached to the beautiful game. Since the launch of Janzi and Zakayo, there have been frequent questions asked about the two new kids on the block from the FUFA Projects list.

In this article, the FUFA Communications Department gives you answers to some of the questions.

1-What is Janzi and what do they do

Janzi is a registered trademark as the official FUFA Sportswear Manufacturer of all FUFA sports gear and assortments. Janzi will produce items such as Zakayo (FUFA official Matchballs), jerseys, travel bags, tracksuits, caps, hats, branded cups, umbrellas, referees’ kits etc.

    2-Who owns Janzi?

Janzi is 100% owned by FUFA.

    3– Why the name Zakayo

The reason behind the name Zakayo was to embrace Uganda’s heritage and we all know that one of Uganda’s biggest tourist attractions are the Chimpanzees. Zakayo was a legendary Chimpanzee whose story dates back to 1963 in Semiliki National Park but later transferred to Entebbe Zoo (now Uganda Education Wild Life Centre) where he lived until his death in 2018. So, the official Matchball was named Zakayo to keep the legacy alive.

4– What are the key details on the Zakayo ball?

The ball has been made with consideration of the latest trends in terms of texture, design, durability and flight. It has patches of the three colours of the Uganda flag. Black, yellow and red that stand for Ethnicity, Abundant sunshine and Brotherhood. The texture on the ball’s outer skin is designed to offer consistent flight, rate of spin and speed.

Zakayo is made of synthetic leather and of Size 5 with a diameter of 8.6 (22-23 cm) and circumference of 27”-28” (68-70 cm). The mass of the Zakayo ball is between 14-16 oz (400-450g) with a pressure between 8.5-15.6 psi (58.6-107.6 kPa).

5 – Was the ball tested enough before its launch?

There was extensive experiment of the Zakayo ball on different grounds, including bare pitches and the texture is suitable to last long enough. Before the final product, there were two samples that were tested on different grounds in Uganda last year.

6 – Where are the balls sold?

The Zakayo Balls can only be purchased at the FUFA Merchandise Shop at FUFA Complex, Mengo. However, FUFA is in the process of releasing guidelines on how to become an official dealer of the Janzi branded sports equipment. The approved list will be communicated to the public through all FUFA media platforms.

7 – What is the cost of the Zakayo ball?

The Ball has two categories. Category One which is the premium quality is sold at Ushs 100,000 while category two is sold at Ush 50,000.

8- Where will the Zakayo ball be used?

It will be used during all FUFA Organized Competitions and FUFA Authorized Competitions.

All matches in the Uganda Premier League, FUFA Big League, FUFA Women Elite League, Stanbic Uganda Cup and FUFA Juniors League will be required to use Zakayo during their competition matches.

However, individuals can purchase and own the ball and use it for competitions that do’nt fall under FUFA.

    9. Why isn’t the National team using Zakayo?

The different national teams usually participate in competitions organized by FIFA, CAF and CECAFA that already have another official football supplier.

    10. Is Janzi open for business with other stakeholders?

Janzi is ready to serve other football stakeholders and other sports disciplines.

Football clubs, football competition organizers and the general public are encouraged to place orders with Janzi on+256765332916 and +256743484566 or janzi@fufauganda.com

  • Gift Fred Mutalya: From School Desks via FUFA Tv Cup to Elite Youth Football – A Winning Story

Gift Fred Mutalya: From School Desks via FUFA Tv Cup to Elite Youth Football – A Winning Story

Meet Gift Fred Mutalya, the soccer sensation who’s not just kicking it on the field but acing his school exams too! Last year, he took the Ugandan Certificate of Education (UCE) exams and nailed it with a stellar performance. But that’s not all; Gift’s journey to fame is a beauty to tell.

Gift’s commitment to both his education and football career is evident in his remarkable achievement of obtaining a first grade in his UCE exams last year. Despite the demands of the football field, Mutalya has consistently demonstrated that success can be achieved both in academics and sports

Imagine this – Gift, the underdog, stepped onto the soccer pitch during the FUFA TV Cup tournament and owned it! He wasn’t just playing; he was scoring goals like it was a piece of cake. Gift bagged the title of the tournament’s top scorer, putting his name in the spotlight and catching the eye of many scouts.

Following his success in the FUFA TV Cup, Gift Fred Mutalya has been flooded with opportunities to play in more professional setups including the U15 National Team call-up in October 2023, though he didn’t feature because he had to write his final UCE exams in the same period.

Currently, he proudly represents the BUL FC Junior Team, a prominent team competing in the FUFA Juniors League. Mutalya’s debut for BUL FC was nothing short of spectacular, as he scored a goal at the new home, instantly endearing himself to fans and teammates alike.

It is somewhat different here, there is a lot of competition but with God first, hard work and determination. Scoring on my debut was an inexplainable moment for me which gives me increased energies to write my name as top scorer in the FUFA Junior League like I did in the FUFA Tv Cup.

Gift commented about how he copes with the professional career

Despite his skyrocketing soccer career, he’s not slacking on the books. Gift shows us that you can be a soccer superstar and an A+ student without breaking a sweat. Mutalya remains dedicated to his studies at Kira College Butiki for his next level (HSC) studies. This commitment reflects not only his discipline but also the supportive environment provided by his family, mentors and educational institution

He has an eagle eye, not visible during basic play but majorly noted at goal conversion; he is intelligent and very disciplined. We expect him to be a different player tomorrow who will solve the problems up front not at the BUL FC senior team but the generation upcoming.

Kabale Dan, BUL FC Junior Team head coach is optimistic about Gift’s success.

Gift Fred Mutalya’s story isn’t just about goals and grades; it’s about defying odds and making dreams come true. From a college boy in Butiki to the buzzing fields of pro football, Gift’s journey inspires us all, a journey from the FUFA TV Cup to his current position as a key player in the BUL FC Junior Team. It flows along with determination, talent, and academic excellence. As he continues to navigate the professional football scene, Mutalya serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes, proving that success in both academics and sports is achievable with dedication and hard work.

    Uganda advances 4-2 on aggregate

Uganda U17 Women’s National Team put up a spirited performance to obliterate Cameroon on Friday and book a berth into the next stage of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers.

The Teen Cranes secured a 3-1 win at Stade Militaire in Yaounde to eventually advance 4-2 on aggregate. It should be noted that the first leg ended in a one-all draw at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

Right from onset, Uganda was dominant and made the better opportunities in terms of scoring.

Coach Sheryl Ulanda Botes made only two changes from the team that had started in the first leg with Joyce Kainza and Ritah Nambuusi starting ahead of Tamisi Shafiga and Promise Kwagalakwe respectively.

Kainza eventually got injured midway the first half and was replaced by Dorcus Kisakye.

Sylvia Kabene opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on a goalkeeping howler by the Cameroon goalkeeper.

Two minutes later, Esther Nangendo doubled the lead with his corner kick delivery going straight into the back of the net.

In the second half, the hosts stepped up efforts but Uganda remained resolute and defended resiliently.

Cameroon got their consolation goal in the second minute of added time but Agnes Nabukenya was able to put the game to bed with a well taken free kick in the last minute of added time.

The result means Uganda progresses to the third qualification round 4-2 on aggregate and will face the winner between Zambia or Tanzania.

FUFA Club Licensing Appeals Committee upholds decision in regard to Arua Hill SC

The FUFA Club Licensing Appeals Committee has upheld the decision taken in regard to Arua Hill SC playing in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

The FUFA Club Licensing Committee (The First Instance Body) noted that Arua Hill Sports Club had continuously violated its obligations under the FUFA Club Licensing Regulations.

On January 10th 2024, the Committee conducted a meeting to assess Arua Hill Sports Club’s file and its standing across all the five aspects of the Club Licensing Criteria. This was prompted by among others reports of the club failing to raise the required number of players for a football match and receiving several club ownership transfers.

Nonetheless, the Committee gave the club an opportunity to defend itself and requested it to re-submit the information as required by the regulations.

Despite efforts to comply, the Club Licensing Committee found that the information filed by Arua Hill SC fell short of the minimum licensing requirements and a decision was taken to withdraw the license.

The club then went ahead to appeal against the aforementioned decision.

After thorough investigation, the FUFA Club Licensing Appeals Committee agreed with the decision taken by the First Instance Body and its ruling has therefore been upheld.

Arua Hill SC is therefore advised by the FUFA Club Licensing Committee to prepare for the 2024/25 Betpawa Big League season (second division).

As a person, the workshop impacted me with a lot of knowledge, and expertise, new opportunities were opened up, and I got to understand the CLOP, what is supposed to be done by the member association, in other words, every stakeholder in football. I will take it on to the different stakeholders through workshops so that they can understand what is to be done.

  • Every word from Teen Cranes Coach and Captain ahead of Cameroon game

Every word from Teen Cranes Coach and Captain ahead of Cameroon game

Uganda U17 Women’s National Team Head Coach Sheryl Botes and captain Desire Katisi Natooro faced the media on Friday ahead of tomorrow’s encounter against Cameroon.

The Teen Cranes will host Cameroon at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende in the first leg of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers, first round.

The coach and captain were asked for the latest teams news, preparations, facing Cameroon and much more.

Here is everything they had to say on the following subjects….

    Coach Sheryl Botes

On how prepared the team is.

We have had two weeks of preparations and I must say the players have kept good discipline and showed commitment to every aspect we have told them.

I had the privilege to go to Jinja and watch games at USSSA Competition. I was pleased with the talents I saw and we actually selected some players to join this team. Because the tournament was U20 age category, some other players I saw will be considered for the upcoming engagements.

On the technical ability of the players in camp.

I am pleased with the ability majority of these players have. They are immensely talented but we must make sure, they get the technical bit of the game. Understanding where to position yourself, how to operate under a playing system and how to use the ball well.

On working with rookies and the pressure that comes with playing for the national team.

Of course, it is always tough and players may have fear but we have been talking to the players and trying to give them the confidence.

On how important will it be for the players to gain exposure.

Experience comes with playing many games and I believe these players can only get better by having more games in their legs. Our target is to keep progressing in these qualifiers so that our players benefit.

On having some players in the current squad who have previously played for the different national teams.

Agnes Nabukenya, Faridah Namirimu and Desire Natooro have already played for the national team and I believe their experience will rub off to the rest of the other players. However, they equally still need guidance.

On what she knows about our opponents Cameroon.

I know they play a physical game and really strong and we have tried to work on that aspect. So the players are aware of what they will be facing.

On the African games draw and the opponents.

We were informed that the tournament is U23 but we agreed to mainly use the U20 National Team. Facing teams like Ghana, Ethiopia and Tanzania will be a good test for us.

    CAPTAIN DESIRE KATISI NATOORO

On how prepared the players are.

We are ready and prepared to face Cameroon tomorrow. The Coaches have prepared us well and given us the best training to enable us win.

On what it means to be named Team Captain.

I am delighted for the opportunity to lead the team. It comes with responsibility but the coaches have guided me well and the players have also been helping me.
