Uganda U18 Gears Up for Redemption Clash Against Zanzibar in CECAFA U18 Boys Championship

Uganda U18 looks to revive their campaign and make their mark in the CECAFA U18 Boys Championship after a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Tanzania U18 in the opening group stage fixture. Uganda’s young football talents are bracing themselves for a redemption clash against Zanzibar tomorrow.`

The first match saw the Ugandan side exhibit moments of promising play but ultimately fell short of securing a favourable result. Head Coach Morley Byekwaso acknowledged the need for adjustments and improvements following the loss.

Zanzibar plays similarly as Tanzania, they have a compact backline. We need to play our way, take the game to their half and score goals.

    Morley Byekwaso, U18 Head Coach

    He acknowledged tactical changes required by his side to overcome opponents;

We hope to have some changes in the lineup; Travis Mutyaba and Namaisi Stephen who came from the bench in the first game will be on the starting 11.

    Morley Byekwaso, U18 Head Coach

One of the main talking points ahead of this fixture revolves around the team’s resilience and adaptability noted in the second half of the previous encounter when pressure was inserted towards the opponents though missing on conversion of a number of chances. Travis Mutyaba a product of the FUFA Juniors League who also plays the senior national team Uganda Cranes promises a tough fight for victory.

With my experience from the senior team, I will do a lot tomorrow with my teammates to secure results.

    Travis Mutyaba, Player

With two days rest and a chance to regroup, the Ugandan squad has been seen intensifying their training sessions, focusing on both technical aspects and mental preparedness aiming to rectify the areas that led to the previous defeat and harness their strengths effectively against the Zanzibar.

Zanzibar, on the other hand, enters the game on the back of a 1-0 win over South Sudan in their opening fixture. They bring their own set of skills and strategies to the field, making this encounter a tough battle of determination and skill.

The match promises an exciting display of talent, strategy, and determination as Uganda U18 faces off against Zanzibar in what is expected to be a fiercely contested battle tomorrow 29th November 2023, at 2:00 pm at Kakamega Stadium.

CECAFA U18 Boys: Uganda vs Tanzania Match Preview

As the CECAFA U18 Boys Championship unfolds, an exciting encounter awaits as Uganda prepares to lock horns with Tanzania. Despite having crossed paths in different age categories, this tournament marks the first time these two sides meet in the U18 category, promising an intriguing battle on the field.

While previous encounters in different age divisions have set the stage for intense rivalries, this matchup in the U18 category carries its own aura of novelty and unpredictability. Both Uganda and Tanzania have showcased their football prowess in such regional tournaments, fostering a competitive environment that adds to the allure of this impending clash.

The Ugandan U18 squad, under the guidance of their astute coaching staff led by Morley Byekwaso, has diligently honed their skills and tactics in preparation for this crucial fixture with last training held today afternoon at Kakamega High School. The team’s strategic approach and focus on player development have set the stage for an intense display of talent and determination on matchday.

As with any high-stakes encounter, challenges loom on the horizon. Both sides will face the test of nerves and composure, striving to convert opportunities while shoring up their defences against the opposition’s attacking threats.

The only problem might be not knowing the opponents well since we’ve not interfaced in this age category-U18, but we have for several times met in other categories. We shall insist on playing the way we’ve been training.

  • Uganda Cranes defeat Somalia to secure first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualification campaign

Uganda Cranes defeat Somalia to secure first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualification campaign

Uganda Cranes secured the first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers after overcoming Somalia on Tuesday.

In the game played at Stade Du Municipal in Berkane, Morocco, Rogers Mato’s lone strike in the opening minutes was the difference.

The winger tapped home from close range in the fourth minute to help Uganda earn maximum points.

Coach Put Paul Joseph made three changes from the team that had lost 2-1 to Guinea last week.

Isima Watenga started in goal ahead of Salim Omar Magoola while Elvis Bwomono started at right back with Kenneth Semakula moved to the midfield.

Teenage midfielder Allan Oyirwoth was handed his debut for the Senior National Team starting in midfield ahead of Bobosi Byaruhanga.

Oyirwoth had a remarkable outing, making the assist for Mato’s goal.

A good run started by Travis Mutyaba saw him release Bwomono on the right wing and his cross found Oyirwoth inside the box to set up Mato who had an empty goal at his mercy.

Uganda kept surging forward and Oyirwoth nearly got a goal but his effort sailed wide.

Mutyaba too had a chance to double the advantage but his left footed effort went just wide.

Mato should have gotten his second on the day in the 38th minute but he lost the ball in attempt of rounding off the goalkeeper.

  • Inaugural Women in Football Bonanza launched, Guinness commits 110M

Inaugural Women in Football Bonanza launched, Guinness commits 110M

Uganda Breweries Limited under their brand Guinness have today announced a partnership worth UGX 110M with FUFA towards the organization of the first ever Women in Football Bonanza to be held on 29th November 2023 at Sheraton Hotel.

The brief ceremony was held at the Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) Head offices in Luzira.

The Women in Football Bonanza is aimed at recognizing efforts put in by FUFA to develop women football in Uganda in the last ten years.

FUFA set out a deliberate strategy to take women football to another level by creating a pool of players in the formed FUFA Women Elite League in 2015.

FUFA also organized capacity building courses designed at promoting women to take up roles in the game. This has created more space for women to get involved heavily in the game in different capacities like; marketing, communications, coaching, trainers, instructors and administration.

“FUFA has always believed that promoting women’s football could be an avenue to reduce such vulnerability.” noted FUFA 3rd Vice president Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi during the launch of the partnership.

The FUFA Deputy CEO-Football Decolas Kiiza, FUFA Lawyer Denis Lukambi, Margaret Kubingi –Chairperson of Uganda Women Football Association (UWFA) and former Crested Cranes player Jean Sseninde attended the event.

“It is from such a background that FUFA has partnered with Guinness – a beer brand distributed by UBL – ‘to pay attention to women attacking and making a mark in a male dominated sport like football, where they could otherwise be vulnerable.” added Hon. Nakiwala.

Guiness, according to UBL’s Head of Beer Matilda Babuleka, are injecting “Shs110m in cash and kind for five years” to spearhead this annual celebration dubbed “Women in Football Bonanza”.

This year’s celebration will be held on November 29 at Sheraton Hotel, Kampala and will have a symposium to show initiatives that can support the welfare of women in football.

“We are not only excited but celebrating the start of partnership between Guinness and FUFA. Guinness and football as we all know are inseparable and this partnership is long overdue. Under our ‘Black Shines Brightest’ campaign, we also want to shine a light on women’s football in Uganda,” Babuleka, who revealed it has taken almost a year for the two entities to seal off this partnership.

“We are gratetul to FUFA for trying to ensure that all top men’s sides have a women’s side too. We know that the FUFA Women Super and Elite Leagues have at least 10 teams each and the national teams are very active. These are significant strides that we are happy to be part of,” Babuleka added.

FUFA’s journey since 1924 covers interesting stories about women football. With ten years of mental change of women football in Uganda since 2013, the bonanza will aim further at bringing together all women in football to recollect and celebrate their achievements, highlights and challenges.
