Put Paul Joseph named Uganda Cranes Head Coach

FUFA has on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Mr. Put Paul Joseph as the head coach of the Uganda Cranes on a two-year renewable contract.

The coach was officially unveiled to the media at FUFA Complex by FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim who was in the company of FUFA CEO Edgar Watson.

FUFA President indicated there was a process that was followed before zeroing down to Put.

“FUFA rolled out an application process and we got over 150 coaches including two Ugandans who applied for the job. After thorough analysis, the FUFA Executive zeroed down on Mr. Put Paul Joseph who we believe will do a good job,” he said.

The FUFA President also revealed that unlike the previous times when the Federation appointed the backroom staff, this time, the coach has been given the greenlight to appoint his technical staff.

“This time, we have allowed the coach to appoint his own backroom staff and he is already coming with five other people from Belgium. However, there will be Ugandans who will work as part of the backroom staff in the areas of medical, coaching and management.” He stated.

    Coach Put will work with the following people as part of his backroom staff;

    Sven De Wilde- Performance Manager

    Mathieu Denis- Physical Fitness Coach

    Gery Osste- Goalkeeping Coach

    Martin Michiel- Physiotherapist

    Jelle Sevenhant- Video analyst

The Ugandan personnel who will be part of the backroom staff will be communicated later and shall report to camp as and when International engagements are lined up.

In his remarks, the Belgian tactician stated he is ready for the task ahead and cannot wait to get started.

“I first of all want to thank FUFA for the trust and confidence in giving me this job. I believe my knowledge about African football will help me to do a good job with the Uganda Cranes,” he started before adding.

“I have been following the Uganda Cranes especially the recent AFCON Qualifier match against Niger and the two friendly games against Mali and Zambia. Give me time, give me the confidence. You will see a different national team.”

Put, 67, has been the head coach of several national teams in Africa including Burkina Faso, The Gambia, Kenya and Congo.

In 2013, Put guided Burkina Faso to the final of Africa Cup of Nations but lost to Nigeria.

His first task with Uganda Cranes will come this month with the team facing Guinea and Somalia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

    Uganda 2-0 Cameroon

Uganda got advantage in the Olympic Football Tournament Qualifiers after defeating Cameroon at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru on Thursday.

The game was the first for interim head coach Charles Ayiekho Lukula who handed defender Justine Najjuko and midfielder Zaitun Namaganda their debut.

A collective spirited effort from the Crested Cranes saw them earn a 2-0 lead.

Catherine Nagadya and Fazila Ikwaput scored a goal in either half in a game that was watched by FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim and some of the FUFA EXCO Members.

Nagadya fired Uganda into the lead in the 11th minute capitalizing on a goalkeeping howler by Cameroon’s Michaely Bihina.

She fumbled with Shamirah Nalugya’s ferocious strike from free kick and spilled the ball into the path of Nagadya who fired home from the rebound.

At the half hour mark, Cameroon were awarded a penalty after defender Justine Najjuko handled the ball in the box.

Cameroon captain Ajara Njoya took it but her effort hit the base of the post and also failed to find the target from the rebound.

The Crested Cranes proved resilient in the next minutes with a water tight backline and goalkeeper Vanessa Edith Karungi stood tall to deny the visitors.

At the start of the second half, the coach made changes with Bridget Nabisaalu and Asia Nakibuuka replacing Najjuko and Namaganda respectively.

When Phiona Nabbumba got injured, she was replaced by Jackline Adong who was also making her debut.

In the 77th minute, Uganda doubled the lead through Ikwaput who capitalized on a melee to slot home.

Fauzia Najjemba did the donkey work on the left wing and set up Ikwaput but she missed on the first attempt. The Cameroonians failed to clear the ball away and the forward did not make any mistake at the second attempt.

Ronnie Kalema, the FUFA Executive Committee Member in charge of Football Development, told the audience that the gathering is a result of an assignment completed and documented to be used for the next seven years. He also thanked the team that worked tirelessly to see it come to life.

The Historical FUFA President, Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim, reminded the audience that football is a trinity that consists of money, governance, and sport.

“My administration has excelled in governance and also shown that football can generate money. With the executive, the plan now is to deliver in the sport,” the Historical FUFA President said.

“I want to assure you that the moment is now,” he added.

The President told the audience that what has been delivered is in reference to what FIFA recommends.

“Whatever we have done in this Technical Master Plan was done with reference to FIFA,” he said.

The Special Presidential Assistant for Education and Sports, Karl Gunter Lange, was impressed by the preview of the document that Ali Mwebe, the Football Development Director, presented.

“Congratulations FUFA upon this milestone. This is a move in the right direction,” he said.

“The application of sports science knowledge is the trend today. We cannot do the same things and have better results. What we are doing today is developing a pathway. As government and NCS, it is our hope that it will deliver us to our intended goals. We look forward to its implementation,” he added.

“FUFA beats all other national federations in two things, governance and managing the sport from a modern perspective. This is another significant step, and I hope other federations will adopt it,” he concluded.

The launch follows a process of internal formulation and external stakeholders’ Symposium held on 3rd July 2023 at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.

The FUFA Executive approved the Technical Master Plan on 31st August 2023 and it was presented to the FUFA Assembly on 7th October 2023.

Queen Cranes: Uganda cruise past Mozambique to reach the next round

Queen Cranes 2-0 Mozambique (Agg: 8-0)

The U20 WNT (Queen Cranes) have qualified for the third round of the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers after eliminating Mozambique on Friday evening in a game played at FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.

Goals from Phionah Nabulime in the 6th minute and Agnes Nabukenya in the 19th minute in the first half were enough to cement their victory at home after beating Mozambique 6:0 away in Mozambique last weekend.

U20 Women National Team head coach Ayub Khalifah Kiyingi said to the press that it was a good thing they secured the 3 points.

“Every game has its own approach, if I concede six I will have to correct my mistakes not to concede another six, I think that is what Mozambique did, as I communicated earlier scoring 6 goals will not be easy and as you have seen it was not easy” Ayub Noted

In the third qualification round Uganda will play the winner between Benin and Senegal next month.
