  • Uganda Cubs captaincy for the FIFA U17 World Cup Qatar 2025

Uganda Cubs captaincy for the FIFA U17 World Cup Qatar 2025

For the first time ever, a Ugandan national team will play at the FIFA World Cup, and at the heart of this historic journey stands Okello Richard, the young forward from Jinja trusted to wear the captain’s armband.

Born on 27th March 2008, Okello’s rise through Uganda’s youth football ranks tells a story of steady progress and quiet resilience. From the dusty pitches of Masese and Amerigo academies, through El Cambio SA and now BUL FC Junior Team, the boy with a dream has grown into a leader with purpose, but it is his heart that drives him further.

Okello’s story begins in Jinja, where footballs made from banana fibres and plastic bags were his first tools of trade.

He joined organized football in 2015, playing for local academies before his talent opened doors. His journey through Amerigo SA, El Cambio SA, Masese SA, and eventually BUL FC Junior Team shaped him into the composed yet hungry striker he is today.

His role models mirror his ambition — Isma Mugulusi, locally, known for his skill, speed, and self-belief — traits that define Okello’s game too.

When asked about his favorite quote, Okello simply says ‘Only God Knows.’ A line that perfectly captures the humility of a boy now standing at football’s biggest youth stage.

He first led his peers during the CECAFA U17 Zonal Qualifiers, guiding Uganda to victory and then through the AFCON U17 Tournament, where his consistency and composure stood out.

Head coach Brian Ssenyondo saw something special in him: the calm in chaos, the voice that settles nerves, and the example that needs no speech.

‘Okello Richard is our captain and he is leading the team. He is leading us to Qatar till when the edition is done because it is also his last with the U-17s,’said Coach Ssenyondo while unveiling the final 21-man squad.

‘He has qualified the team to the World Cup. He has not finished his role. So we still maintain him.’

Behind every captain stands a core of trusted lieutenants and for the Uganda Cubs, that core includes Walusimbi Abubakali, Sengooba Hamuza and Bogere James. Each hand-picked for their work ethic, discipline and influence in the dressing room. Together, they form a strong leadership team of the Cubs squad.

On the pitch, Okello leads from the front, Walusimbi keeps the midfield engine ticking, Sengooba anchors the defense with calm precision and Bogere energizes the team’s transitions at the front too. Off the field, they are the bridge between coaches and players; the heartbeat of a group carrying an entire nation’s hopes.

On 5th November 2025, Uganda will line up against Canada U17 in their first match of the FIFA U17 World Cup Qatar 2025.

In the tunnel, Okello will walk first, carrying the captain’s armband and the weight of millions watching from home, the grown plus the young players in schools and dusty pitches, dreaming that their turn will come.

Away from football, Okello is like any other teenager, he loves listening to music, enjoys rice, sweet potatoes and chicken. He studies at Jinja Progressive Academy (JIPRA). But once the whistle blows, he transforms. Focused, fearless and selfless.

The captaincy has refined him. It is no longer just about scoring goals; it is about setting standards, lifting teammates and embodying Uganda’s values of teamwork, respect and belief.

Okello Richard may only be 17, but his legacy is already written in gold ink. He will forever be the first Ugandan to captain a national team at a FIFA World Cup. Whether Uganda wins, draws, or learns through defeat, the story of this young man from Jinja leading the Cubs on the world stage will be told for a lifetime.

The Uganda U17 Men’s National Team, the Cubs, have safely arrived in Doha, Qatar, ready to continue their historic journey at the FIFA U17 World Cup — Uganda’s first-ever appearance at the global stage.

The team departed Dubai early Saturday morning after completing a 9 days training camp that featured three high-profile international friendlies against Venezuela, Panama, and Paraguay U17 sides.

Speaking before the team’s departure, assistant captain Walusimbi Abubakali expressed optimism following the build-up games.

‘This was our last sweat in Dubai, now we head to Qatar. The friendly matches gave us a good test and great experience — we have really learned lessons from them,’ Walusimbi said.

Walusimbi noted that the team has quickly adapted to the environment and is mentally prepared for the tournament’s intensity.

‘The weather here is actually not too different from home, so we’ll not face many challenges with it,’ he added. ‘We have already switched from friendly game mode to competition mode, and I can promise we’ll do our best to represent the country well.’

A total of 21 players made the final squad that will represent Uganda in Qatar. Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo, while unveiling the final squad, expressed confidence in the group selected to make Uganda proud.

‘We believe this is the best squad to represent us in Qatar,’ Ssenyondo stated. ‘We have only added a few new players who weren’t with us during the AFCON, but the core of the team has been maintained.’

Okello Richard will captain the team, assisted by Walusimbi Abubakali, Sengooba Hamuza, and Bogere James.

The Cubs will be based at Holiday Villa Hotel and Residence – City Center Doha, Qatar and will open their World Cup campaign against Canada on Wednesday, 5th November 2025, with kickoff set for 6:45 pm (local time and EAT).

  • Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League: Match Day 5 Preview

Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League: Match Day 5 Preview

After four rounds of intriguing action, the 2025/2026 season is already heating up and matchday five promises thrilling action with 6 fixtures evenly distributed on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday, She Corporate FC travel to face Lady Doves FC, Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC host She Maroons FC while Amus College WFC welcome Asubo Ladies FC.

In Masindi, Lady Doves FC, who are still searching for their breakthrough win host She Corporate FC at Katusabe Ground. Table leaders She Corporate have asserted their dominance in the early stages, showcasing good attacking strength and a solid defensive record that reflects their firm determination, however, having failed to secure a win against Lady Doves in their last three encounters at Katusabe Ground, makes this match an important test to the progress the sharks are making. The attacking trio of Sandra Kisakye, Rebecca Nakato and Jesca Namanda has been ruthless this season, and their form will be pivotal if the sharks are to secure a win. For the believers, they will be keen to make a statement with a win at home but they’ll need to be at their defensive best to contain the in-form sharks, beating them could be a catalyst for revival, defeat will pile more pressure.

Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC who have set the tone early this season with high intensity attacking footballhost She Maroons FC at Kawempe Muslim SS Ground.

For the warriors to extend their winning run, the trio of Jovia Nakagolo, Asia Nakibuuka and Latifah Nakasi will need to be more clinical in tight spaces, leveraging their recent form to overcome an opponent that makes it physically uncomfortable to frustrate high ranking opposition. The warriors strong form and home advantage will give them a boost but they’ll we need to kill off games more decisively to avoid a repeat of their last two nail-biting finishes. She Maroons on the other hand will need to capitalize on the scoring opportunities as they arise, Norah Alupo and Lillian Kasuubo possess the attacking threat but they will face a stern test against the warriors’ defense, which has been improving game by game.

Still on Saturday, Amus College WFC will be eager to get back to winning ways when they host Asubo Ladies FC at Amus College Stadium. With a resilient style that can grind out results, and quality firepower upfront, they will be confident of a positive outcome, especially with the return of star player Shayline Opisa, who missed the last two games due to national team duties with the Harambe Starlets. Playing at home, the hosts will aim to be compact and solid to secure a much-needed victory. However, they won’t have an easy ride, as the visitors are riding high on confidence after a spirited 2-2 draw against the defending champions. Asubo Ladies FC will build on that momentum to cause an upset again. Playmaker Shadia Babirye is in good form and will ready to drive the team forward.

Matchday 5 will conclude on Sunday with three fixtures, Kampala Queens FC host Olila High School FC, St Noa Girls-Zana welcome Rines SS WFC while Makerere University WFC take on Uganda Martyrs High School WFC.

Defending champions Kampala Queens FC aim to get back on track when they host Olila High WFC at Omondi stadium. A is slight problem is beginning to develop for Firew Asefa, the queens are not looking solid defensively and that could prove costly. However, their goal-scoring ability is impressive, with the highest number of goals scored this season. The creative midfield duo of Catherine Nagadya and Kamiyati Naigaga will be key, using their progressive passing to Olila’s defense and give the Queens the edge they need. Top scorer Kamiyati Naigaga will be keen to extend her scoring streak to five games. Olila H/S WFC on the hand, will need to press well and defend in numbers, if they succeed in suppressing space between the lines. They might frustrate the defending champions.

Makerere University WFC, who have had a mixed start to the season host Uganda Martyrs H/S WFC at Makerere University Ground. The visitors are yet to taste victory this season but have shown attacking promise in the previous games. Its not too late to turn things around, they need to solidify their defense and capitalize on scoring opportunities as they arrive. Wingers Nusulah Nakintu and Brenda Munyana will be crucial in driving the team forward. Makerere will rely on moments of individual brilliance to secure a positive result at home.

At kabaka Kyabaggu stadium, Rines SS WFC who are seeking their first win of the season, host debutants St Noa Girls-Zana FC who are having a good season so far, will go all out to close the gap on the leaders, with Dorcas Lwalisa, Esther Babirye and Patricia Nayiga leading the charge in attack to unlock the host’s defense. Rines on the other hand will likely adopt a more conservative approach, looking to exploit spaces on the counter-attack.

Player spotlight: Nusulah Nakintu in her own words

The Player Spotlight is a new feature by the FUFA Communications Department that offers bold and in-depth conversations with female footballers. It explores mindset, motivation, defining moments, and personal reflections. The segment aims to reveal the person behind the player.

Striker Nusulah Nakintu, recently promoted from the school feeder team to the senior side, has been impressive for Uganda Martyrs High School WFC. She has already scored two goals this season. In this week’s spotlight feature, the promising forward opens up about her journey, ambitions, and inspirations.

FUFA COMM: What did the promotion mean to you, and how does it feel to be playing in the Super League now?

Nakintu: I felt so happy to be promoted to the senior team. After several years of playing school competitions, I developed a strong desire to compete at the highest level. The Super League is a great platform for me to keep showing my potential. I am grateful, eager to learn, work hard, and make the most of this opportunity.

FUFA COMM: How have your coaches supported you in this transition, and what role have they played in your progress so far?

Nakintu: I am very grateful to my coaches for the major role they have played in my development. From school level, they prepared me well for this stage. They guided me on what to expect in the Super League and taught me how to handle challenges. Their mentorship and belief in me have been invaluable, and I truly appreciate their dedication and support.

FUFA COMM: You have already scored two goals this season. What are your personal and team targets for the rest of the campaign?

Nakintu: As a team, our goal is to finish in the top positions. Even though our start has not been the best, we are committed to working harder and improving our results. Personally, I aim to finish among the top scorers this season. I am dedicating myself to intense training, and I believe that with persistence and determination, I will achieve that target.

FUFA COMM: How do you balance academics with football, and what advice would you give to other student-athletes?

Nakintu: I am grateful to our coaches for understanding the importance of education. They plan training around our class schedules, which helps us balance studies with football. My advice to other student-athletes is to always prioritise education. It remains valuable even beyond football. There is indeed life after the game, and education opens doors to future opportunities.

FUFA COMM: Do you have a role model who inspires you, either locally or internationally?

Nakintu: Shamirah Nalugya, who plays for FC Minsk Women, inspires me a lot. Her discipline, work ethic, and commitment both on and off the field are qualities I deeply admire. Watching her motivates me to keep improving and to emulate her passion and professionalism.

FUFA COMM: If you could choose one player from any other team in the league to join yours, who would it be and why?

Nakintu: (Laughs and thinks for a while) Krusum Namutebi of Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC would be a fantastic addition to our team.

  • Uganda Cubs Fall 3–2 to Paraguay in Final Dubai Friendly

Uganda Cubs Fall 3–2 to Paraguay in Final Dubai Friendly

Tuesday, 28th October 2025 | Al Hamriya Cultural & Sports Club, Dubai

Uganda’s U17 national team, the Uganda Cubs, put up another brave performance but were edged 3–2 by South American side Paraguay in their final international friendly match of the Dubai Youth Challenge Cup on Tuesday night.

The match served as the Cubs’ last test ahead of their historic debut at the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar, and once again, Brian Ssenyondo’s charges showed attacking promise but were undone by lapses in defending.

The young Ugandans took the lead in the 24th minute through their danger man James Bogere, who continued his fine scoring form after also finding the back of the net against Venezuela.

However, Paraguay responded strongly, equalizing from the penalty spot through Alan Ledesma in the 40th minute.

Just four minutes later, Almada Derlis put the South Americans ahead with a well-taken strike to ensure Paraguay went into the break with a 2–1 advantage.

Uganda came back rejuvenated after the interval, piling pressure on Paraguay and eventually leveling matters in the 55th minute courtesy of Abubakali Walusimbi.

Despite the resurgence, Paraguay regained the lead in the 71st minute when De Cavalho Mouricio capitalized on a defensive mix-up to slot home what proved to be the match-winner.

The result marked Uganda’s second defeat in Dubai after a 2–1 loss to Panama, following an encouraging 1–1 draw with Venezuela in their opening game.

After the game, head coach Brian Ssenyondo expressed gratitude for the exposure his team gained during the camp and remained optimistic ahead of the World Cup.

‘I am thankful that we have had this camp, so I want to thank the Federation for this initiative as it has given us a real picture of what we are going to find in the World Cup,’ Ssenyondo said.

‘When you see the teams we have played, they come from the same region as our group opponents Canada and Chile so this means a lot. The good thing is that in all three games, we have scored first, which shows our attacking potential. What we need to improve is defending and game management. I believe by the time we play our first match in Qatar, everything will be in place.’

Uganda is pooled in Group K at the upcoming FIFA U17 World Cup, alongside Canada, Chile, and France, and will kick off their campaign on November 5th against Canada.

Despite not winning any of their Dubai friendlies, the Cubs’ performances have offered valuable lessons and built confidence ahead of their maiden appearance on the global stage.

Uganda Cubs Results in Dubai Friendlies:

    Uganda Cubs 1–1 Venezuela
    Uganda Cubs 1–2 Panama
    Uganda Cubs 2–3 Paraguay

    Uganda Cubs Scorers in Dubai:

    James Bogere (2)

Uganda Cubs show fighting spirit despite narrow loss to Panama in Dubai

Uganda’s U17 side, the Uganda Cubs, displayed great determination and character but narrowly fell 2–1 to Panama in their second international friendly match in Dubai on Sunday evening.

The encounter followed their opening fixture against Venezuela on Thursday, which ended in a 1–1 draw, as the Cubs continue their build-up to the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar.

The young Ugandans made a bright start, taking the lead in the 13th minute when Simon Wanyama calmly finished off a well-worked team move.

However, Panama restored parity midway through the first half after Gordon Gerson converted from the penalty spot in the 29th minute.

In a closely contested second half, Richards Moises struck in the 58th minute to hand Panama the decisive goal despite the Cubs’ spirited efforts to find an equalizer.

The Uganda Cubs will wrap up their Dubai tour with a final test against Paraguay on Tuesday, before heading to Qatar for the global showpiece.

Uganda is placed in Group K alongside France, Chile, and Canada, and will open their campaign on November 5th against Canada. The tournament runs from November 3rd to 27th.

  • Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League 2025/2026: Matchday Four Wrap-up

Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League 2025/2026: Matchday Four Wrap-up

The 2025/2026 season is already shaping up to be memorable. We are beginning to reach a point in the campaign where we understand each team’s real level and ambition. She Corporate and Kawempe Muslim Ladies claimed maximum points, while Kampala Queens were held, ensuring an early and intriguing title race.

Here is a full round-up of the weekend’s action.

Is She Corporate FC back to their best?
By any measure, She Corporate FC have made an excellent start to the season, topping the standings with 10 points, level with Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC, but boasting a superior goal difference. Surely not even the boldest Sharks fans would have thought that they could be at the summit at this stage, but that is the state of play as it stands.

She Corporate FC cruised to a 2-0 win over Amus College WFC, their third straight victory. After a tight first half, the Sharks took control after the restart, with Rebecca Nakato scoring her third goal of the season in the 56th minute. The Sharks’ wealth of experience proved decisive as they held firm, dominated possession with authority, and Jesca Namanda sealed the win in stoppage time. This marked their third clean sheet of the season, and their defensive solidity is sending a strong message to their opponents. Rebecca Nakato was named the Finance Trust Bank Woman of the Match.

Nakagolo scores in successive games to maintain the Warriors’ perfect away record
Winger Jovia Nakagolo scored her second goal of the season as Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC made it three league wins on the bounce with a 1-0 victory over Uganda Martyrs H/S WFC at St Gerald’s Ground, Lubaga.

The Warriors carried the greater attacking threat from the outset and it took smart reflex saves from goalkeeper Joan Namusisi to deny Latifah Nakasi from close range and Jovia Nakagolo from distance. The forward was outstanding in attack, linking well with both wingers. After the restart, Nakagolo’s moment of brilliance in the 50th minute proved decisive.

Coach Edward Kasozi’s second-half changes sparked some life into Uganda Martyrs, who applied sustained offensive pressure in the final quarter. Had they been more efficient in front of goal, the outcome could have been different.

The result highlighted the Warriors’ ability to produce different match winners, with Agnes Nabukenya, Asia Nakibuuka, Jovia Nakagolo, and Latifah Nakasi all making an impact this season. However, the most significant aspect of this contest was the Warriors’ defensive line, which kept its first clean sheet of the campaign. Jovia Nakagolo was named the Finance Trust Bank Woman of the Match.

Kampala Queens stunned by Asubo Ladies FC
Kampala Queens FC were held to a thrilling 2-2 draw by Asubo Ladies FC at Kampala Quality Ground. Leading top scorer Kamiyati Naigaga netted her fifth goal of the season to put the Queens ahead, but Faiza Ibrahim’s equaliser kept the hosts in the contest.

Zaina Nambozo’s unfortunate own goal restored the Queens’ lead, but she made amends with a late penalty to secure a point for the home side. Notably, Asubo Ladies scored their first goal of the season, while the result further exposed the Queens’ defensive frailties, with the team still searching for their first clean sheet. Catherine Nagadya was named the Finance Trust Bank Woman of the Match.

Elsewhere, in a closely contested encounter at Muteesa II Stadium, St Noa Girls Zana FC and Makerere University WFC shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw. Allen Nassazi’s individual brilliance put the visitors ahead early, before Dorcas Lwalisa levelled for St Noa after the break. Nassazi’s playmaking skills again proved decisive as she set up Rashida Nankya to restore Makerere’s lead, but Patricia Nayiga’s late strike denied either side victory, earning a hard-fought draw.

St Noa dropped not only crucial points but also missed the chance to apply more pressure on the league leaders. Patricia Nayiga was named the Finance Trust Bank Woman of the Match.

In Soroti, Olila High School WFC and Rines SS WFC played out a tense 0-0 draw at Olila Grounds, with neither side able to find a breakthrough in a closely contested match. The stalemate extended both teams’ winless run to four games, leaving Olila in the drop zone. Forward Mary Lotyang of Olila was named the Finance Trust Bank Woman of the Match.

She Maroons FC and Lady Doves FC also played out a goalless draw at Prison Grounds, Luzira, extending the Believers’ winless run to four games. It has been a tough start for the 2021 champions. She Maroons FC’s star player Immaculate Kizza was named the Finance Trust Bank Woman of the Match.

Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League 2025/2026: Matchday four preview

The final match week of October takes centre stage this weekend with three fixtures on Saturday and three on Sunday. With three teams level on seven points at the summit, Matchday Four promises thrilling action that could play a big role in determining the monthly individual award winners.

On Saturday, Olila High School WFC host Rines SS WFC, St Noa Girls Zana FC entertain Makerere University WFC, while Uganda Martyrs High School WFC welcome Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC.

At St Gerlad’s Ground, Lubaga, Uganda Martyrs High School WFC who are winless after three matches face Kawempe Muslim Ladies who have shown great form so far and will be full of confidence. The in-form Latifah Nakasi’s return against her former team adds extra intrigue to this contest. The Warriors’ impressive tactical play led by the driving force of Agnes Nabukenya makes them a tough opponent for Uganda Martyrs who are still struggling for consistency. They have conceded eight goals in three games and this defensive frailty could prove costly against the Warriors’ attacking strength. However, the hosts’ familiarity with their opponents might give them the confidence to challenge and cause problems.

Olila High School WFC and Rines SS WFC face off at Olila Grounds in Soroti with both sides searching for their first win of the season. Olila, currently in the drop zone, will aim to use home advantage to climb out of the bottom places. They have found scoring difficult, managing only one goal in their last three matches. Rines, on the other hand, have shown attacking promise in recent games and will look to build on that momentum to claim three points. The game could be tense as neither side will want to go four matches without a victory.

Still on Saturday, St Noa Girls Zana FC will hope to bounce back and remain within reach of the early leaders when they host Makerere University WFC at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku. Despite losing their previous game, the hosts showed plenty of attacking promise and will look to build on that confidence. With a talented squad featuring forwards Dorcas Lwalisa and Patricia Nayiga, they have the firepower to dominate at home. Makerere, however, come into the game with renewed confidence after securing a recent win. Their players have shown individual brilliance and will be eager to cause an upset and collect all three points.

Matchday Four will conclude on Sunday with three fixtures. Asubo Ladies FC host Kampala Queens FC, She Corporate FC welcome Amus College WFC, while She Maroons FC take on Lady Doves FC.

After a slow start to the campaign, Asubo Ladies FC face a tough test as they welcome Kampala Queens FC at Kampala Quality Ground. Having parted ways with Coach Kamya Swaleh this week, Asubo face the challenge of taking on the in-form Queens at a difficult moment. Kampala Queens have been dominant with a strong midfield partnership of Catherine Nagadya and Zaitun Namaganda capable of building play effectively through opponents. Their dynamic wing play adds to their creativity and attacking threat. All eyes will be on the current league top scorer Kamiyati Naigaga who is in unstoppable form and will hope to haunt her former club and add to her goal tally. Maximising goal difference could also prove vital for the Queens in this fixture.

Elsewhere, She Corporate FC will look to maintain their perfect home record when they host Amus College WFC at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru. The Sharks’ early season form has been impressive but this will be their biggest test so far as Amus College continue to show competitive spirit. If She Corporate FC can deliver another strong performance against Amus College, many will start to see them as genuine title contenders. They currently boast the meanest defence in the league, having conceded once in three matches and kept two clean sheets. That solidity could again be decisive in this contest.

At Prison Grounds, Luzira, She Maroons FC who have had a mixed start to the season take on Lady Doves FC who are eager to turn their campaign around. The Believers need to find a balance between defence and attack. Their scoring record is positive but they must tighten up at the back and avoid conceding from unforced errors. On the other hand, the Jailers will need to address their defensive weaknesses shown in the previous game if they are to mount a serious challenge. This fixture could go either way.

  • Coach Ssenyondo Reflects on Uganda Cubs’ Promising Start in Dubai

Coach Ssenyondo Reflects on Uganda Cubs’ Promising Start in Dubai

The Uganda U17 Men’s National Team, the Uganda Cubs, kicked off their international build-up to the FIFA U17 World Cup with a 1–1 draw against Venezuela at Al Arabi Sports and Cultural Club in Dubai on Thursday evening.

For Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo the result was less about the scoreline and more about the progress he saw in his young players through their discipline, confidence and ability to translate training sessions into match situations.

The Cubs arrived in Dubai two days earlier for a 10-day intensive camp designed to fine-tune their tactical and physical readiness for the global tournament set for 3rd to 27th November in Qatar. Their opening match of the World Cup will be against Canada on 5th November and this friendly was seen as the first true test against international opposition outside Africa.

‘A tough game it was but again we dominated from the first minute,’ Ssenyondo said after the match. ‘But if you look at the entire game throughout the first half we would have gone to the break with about five goals because we created a lot of chances. In the second half we would have converted like three or four from the many chances we created.’

The opening stages of the match were owned by Uganda with vibrant attacking play and control of possession. The Cubs displayed confidence on the ball, dictated the tempo and spread play across the pitch with precision. For much of the first half they kept Venezuela pinned back and created several goal-scoring opportunities that narrowly went wide or were stopped by the South American goalkeeper.

The breakthrough came seven minutes into the second half when forward Bogere James capitalised on a moment of brilliance from midfielder Isima Mulala Magala who split Venezuela’s defence with a perfectly timed through ball. With only the goalkeeper to beat Bogere showed composure beyond his age, dribbling past him before slotting the ball into an empty net to send the Ugandan bench into celebration.

However, the game took a different turn midway through the second half as Venezuela regrouped, pushed numbers forward and began to test Uganda’s defensive organisation. Their persistence paid off in the 74th minute when they worked a quick throw-in, caught Uganda’s defence off guard and fired in an equaliser past goalkeeper Mazige Gilbert.

The tempo intensified as both teams searched for a late winner. In the dying moments of added time Uganda nearly restored their lead. Bogere, lively throughout the game, made a dazzling run down the right flank and delivered a teasing cross that confused the Venezuelan defenders. The ball fell perfectly to Isima Mulala who struck first time but saw his effort sail agonisingly inches over the bar.

The whistle blew shortly after, ending what was a physically demanding yet encouraging contest for the Cubs.

‘Now what we need to do is to score more than the opponent or keep a clean sheet and if we do that we are good to go,’ Coach Ssenyondo added. ‘Despite the missed chances I am very happy as a coach to see how the boys have been coordinating on the pitch through combination play, mobility, making runs and building from the back through the middle third to the final third. The boys have been doing everything we do at training.’

The coach also emphasised the importance of facing strong opponents like Venezuela during this preparation period and described the match as a valuable test of mental strength and adaptability.

‘Venezuela was a very good test for us and yes we have got a taste of what we are going to see at the World Cup. But overall the game was good.’

The Uganda Cubs will play their second friendly on Sunday against Panama.

Uganda Cubs Set for First International Friendly Match Against Venezuela in Dubai

The Uganda U-17 Men’s National Team (the Uganda Cubs) will face Venezuela in their first trial game of the U-17 Dubai Youth Challenge, marking the beginning of a crucial pre-tournament series ahead of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 scheduled for November.

The Dubai Youth Challenge features several countries using the event to fine-tune their squads before heading to Qatar. Uganda will later take on Panama and Paraguay as part of this series—an opportunity to evaluate tactical readiness, mental resilience, and team chemistry against strong opposition.

The team safely arrived in Dubai on Tuesday night, completing a smooth journey and settling into camp in excellent spirits. Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo confirmed that all players and officials are in good condition and ready to begin the next phase of their preparations.

‘This pre-tournament is a very good test for us,’ said Ssenyondo. ‘Tomorrow we are having our first game against Venezuela, and it is a crucial precursor to what we shall face in our group because we have two South American teams—Chile and Canada. Playing Venezuela will surely test us for what we might face in the tournament.’

Coach Ssenyondo noted that the team’s early arrival and pre-tournament camp were a well-thought-out decision by the Federation, aimed at helping the players acclimatise to the environmental conditions expected in Qatar.

‘The weather here is a bit heavy and different from what we are used to at home,’ Ssenyondo explained. ‘But we are hustlers—we know what we want. We are here to compete and present ourselves in the best way possible. We must have what we call mental toughness, whether it is the food or the weather. There should be no excuses. That is why FUFA organised this early—to help us adapt to similar conditions to those in Qatar.’

The warm and humid weather in Dubai has been particularly challenging, but the coach emphasised that the players are responding positively and showing strong determination during training sessions.

Goalkeeper Adrian Mukwanga, one of the team’s experienced figures having featured in the AFCON U-17 finals in Morocco, expressed optimism ahead of the first friendly.

‘I learned from Morocco that we always have to work harder to compete and succeed,’ said Mukwanga. ‘If I get the chance to play against Venezuela, I will do my best to put in a good performance.’

The Dubai camp is a platform for the Cubs to build rhythm, adapt tactically to international styles of play, and strengthen their mental edge before stepping onto the world stage.

‘We are grateful to FUFA for organising this camp and covering all the costs,’ Ssenyondo added. ‘This is a huge opportunity for the players and the technical team to get ready for the big stage.’

The 10-day international camp marks the final stage of the Cubs’ preparations before they head to Qatar for their historic maiden appearance at the global tournament.

The final squad of 21 players for the World Cup will be named at the end of the camp.

While in Dubai, the team will hold intensive training sessions and play a series of international friendly matches against top youth sides, with fixtures to be confirmed in the coming days.

This phase will enable the technical team to assess tactical readiness, mental sharpness and overall match fitness as Uganda aims to make a positive impression on the world stage.

Before departing for Dubai, the Cubs wrapped up their domestic training with a commanding 5–0 victory over Amus College School in a practice match played on Monday 20th October at FUFA Stadium, Kadiba.

Bogere James was the standout performer, scoring a brilliant hat-trick, while Walusimbi Abubakali and Kamurungi Nuwagaba added a goal each to seal an emphatic win. The result capped off a successful home camp that showcased steady improvement across all aspects of play.

Speaking after the match, Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress and readiness ahead of the final leg of preparations.

‘This was our last friendly game here in Uganda before we switch camp to Dubai,’ said Ssenyondo.

‘I am impressed with how the players are adapting and showing maturity, especially in implementing our attacking principles in the final third. The improvement game by game gives us confidence heading into the World Cup.’

Ssenyondo, who has announced his final assignment at the youth level as he looks to explore opportunities with senior teams, added that the international camp will give players valuable exposure and a chance to test themselves against different playing styles, boosting their confidence ahead of global competition.

The Cubs have been in camp at FUFA Hotel Kisaasi since 7th October 2025.

Uganda is in Group K alongside Canada, Chile and France. Uganda’s opening fixture is against Canada on 5th November 2025.

  • FUFA Supports Regional League Clubs with 545 Zakayo Balls

FUFA Supports Regional League Clubs with 545 Zakayo Balls

FUFA has continued to strengthen football development across the country through the distribution of 545 Zakayo balls to clubs in the FUFA Regional Leagues. The handover ceremony took place today at FUFA House in Mengo and was presided over by FUFA’s 2nd Vice President, Dr Azah Taibu.

A total of eight General Secretaries representing the regional football associations received the balls on behalf of 109 clubs participating in the FUFA Regional Leagues. Each club will receive five Zakayo balls to facilitate matchday and training activities.

Mafuko Rauf from Eastern Region, Turyomuriwe Samuel from Kitara Region, Ssejjemba Brian from Buganda Region, Ekaju Daniel from North East Region, Alal Eron from Northern Region, Nalwanga Berthlyne from Western Region,
Keuber Moses from the West Nile Region and Frank Kakuddu from the Kampala Region attended the ceremony.

Speaking during the ceremony, Dr Taibu explained that the initiative forms part of FUFA’s broader technical master plan aimed at supporting football development at all levels.

‘Today, we’ve had an activity here, which is part of our broader technical master plan, and it’s about distribution of equipment,’ said Dr Taibu. ‘As you will recall, we recently distributed a number of equipment to the Super League clubs, and this is a follow-up to support the regions as well. The FUFA Executive Committee made a decision to support regional football clubs with balls, and today, we have seen the Zakayo balls being distributed to a total of 109 clubs across the country. Each club will receive five balls, and this reflects our commitment as a federation to support the lower-level leaders, to make sure that they play good football, grow the game, and we grow the game together as a country.’

The Regional General Secretaries expressed gratitude to FUFA for the continued support.

The Buganda Regional CEO Brian Ssejjemba said, ‘Today, FUFA has given us five balls for each third division club. Speaking for Buganda region, we are thankful to the FUFA leadership for equipping us with match balls towards the third division men’s league. This will help our clubs successfully execute matchday activities and improve the quality of the league since the teams will now have good equipment.’

The Northern Region General Secretary Alal Eron also appreciated the support, noting its contribution towards upholding the integrity of competitions. ‘First of all, I thank FUFA for its commitment to ensuring consistency across all competitions. When you look at Rule 23 of the FUFA Competition Rules, it talks about the specification of the ball to be used at FUFA authorised competitions. This is a right step towards maintaining the integrity of competitions across regions. Most clubs have poor quality balls or very few, and this is a good supplement to what they have,’ he stated.

From the North East region, the General Secretary Ekaju Daniel said, ‘We have 16 clubs, and this is a big boost for us. We thank the FUFA President and the Executive Committee for actualising this plan. You cannot talk about football without footballs, and now that we have them, we are ready to play and promote the game even more.’

This initiative, approved by the FUFA Executive Committee, builds on earlier support extended to all 16 Uganda Premier League clubs, 16 FUFA Big League clubs, and 12 FUFA Women Super League clubs. In total, FUFA’s recent distribution of Zakayo balls across these competitions is valued at nearly UGX 200 million.

Through such initiatives, FUFA continues to reaffirm its commitment to football development by equipping clubs with quality resources to enhance the standard of play and sustainability of competitions at all levels.
