It has been history in the making for Uganda as a country, Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), the CECAFA region and the beach soccer family in particular as the Sand Cranes made a gallant debut performance at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) beach soccer finals in Senegal.
The final result not withstanding, Uganda Sand Cranes achieved far fetched expectations and surpassed the bare-minimum.
Senegal, record winners of the tournament with 7 titles capitalized on the huge experience and the noisy home gallery to carry the day 5-1 by close of the three business in the three periods.
There was a spirited performance from the Sand Cranes team precipitated by the pleasing sight of the treasured Black, Yellow and Red stripped national flag among other countries’ flags and the gallant display from every member on team Uganda left far reaching impressions.
Senegal led two out of three periods, 3-0, 1-0 and 1-1 with Uganda’s maiden goal at any AFCON beach soccer finals coming from the sweet left foot of Isma Kawawulo at the Saly beach soccer stadium.
Millions of fans were glued on their Television sets and thousands kept to the electronic devices never to miss any piece of action.

Royal Mendy and Fah Babacas each scored a brace with Ninou Diatta netting the other goal for the hosts and tournament defending champions, Senegal.
From the lovely flicks, interceptions, goalkeeper’s flexes, fierce shots as well as sweet overhead acrobatic volleys, all were served raw and in abundance.
The team quickly regroups on Monday, 24th May 2021 to lay bold strategies for the upcoming next match against traditional rivals, Tanzania barely 24 hours after the first game.

Definitely, there will be rich expectations as the team takes to the lavish facility against the neighbors Tanzania.
‘We shall capitalize on our strong points and positives picked from the game against a largely experienced Senegal side who have won the AFCON seven times and also been at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup. We have learnt a lot from them that we shall use in our game against Tanzania on Monday’ Bashir Mutyaba, assistant coach.

This year’s tournament has only teams from the Uganda Premier League and FUFA Big League.
The change in playing format is as a result of the Covid-19 global pandemic that had left out the lower division teams (Regional and district teams) from taking part in the most prestigious knout tournament in Uganda.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo
‘We thought it was very important to have an engagement with the media. We are open-minded. Since 2013, the game of football was still in recovery. By the time we came into administration, the game had moved to the point of take-off. For instance in 2013, there were only 8 employees of FUFA. Today, there are 60 employees. The national teams have improved a lot. There is a lot of improvement on quality of the human resource, communication and governance issues. The financial resources have increased from Shs 4 billion to over Shs 40 billion now. There is improved relationship with Government. No existing administration can operate without the Government. We need Government, there is a lot that we need from Government; CAF and FIFA, Uganda Olympic Committee, National Council of Sports (NCS), media and everybody working for the well being of football. Football needs an environment to develop’ noted Eng. Moses Magogo

Teams are built in cycles. We have taken consideration into budding young players. Some results might not be be good in the beginning. The rebuilding process will see some players retained in the Senior team’ noted Eng. Magogo
It is unfortunate that we did not qualify for the AFCON Finals for the third successive time. When i came into this office I said I do not want to be judged by qualification. I want to be judged by creating systems that help in the development of the game in the country. Even the best teams in the world win or lose some matches. What you do is go back and do analysis of the losses and react for the best football results.
‘There are five key factors that help in getting successful football results and these are; Infrastructure, Coaches, players, logistics and motivation’ added Magogo.
The FUFA President also declared his intentions to contest for another term of office.
‘My term comes to an end on 31st August 2021. We believe we have ideas. I will stand for the post of FUFA President again’ Magogo told the media.

We give thanks to Almighty Lord for whatever we have achieved from the game. We had a game where I feel we were unlucky. The players put up a good fight. We tried our best in the game. We knew that even before the game, it would all end in Malawi. We are going back to the drawing board to play for the game away against Malawi. We have to select a better team to face Malawi.
Denis Onyango, Uganda Cranes Captain:
I am very happy for the performance of the team. We lifted out tempo in the second half and created half chances. 29th March 2021: Malawi Vs Uganda Cranes – Blantyre
Uganda Cranes Assistant Coach Abdallah Mubiru has hinted on the significance of the remaining two AFCON qualifiers; at home against Burkina Faso and away to Malawi.
In an exclusive interview with www.fufa.co.ug at FUFA House, Mubiru has given the detailed catalogue of preparations, the anticipated approach of these double headers, returning players to the team fold as he rallied the fans to support the team at all times.
Question:There are two important crucial games for Uganda Cranes against Burkina Faso (at home) and Malawi (away). How are the preparations going on?
Abdallah Mubiru: The preparations started one and a half weeks ago as we have been engaged in private talks with each of the summoned players to help with the psychology. On Thursday, 18th March 2021, the players available (those who play in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League) and some foreign based players will gather together. There will be technical sessions with on field preparations on Saturday and Sunday before the whole group converges on Monday, 22nd March 2021 to embark on the technical approach of the game.
Question:The home game against Burkina Faso is key in the qualification campaign with the second one coming up away to Malawi. How crucial are these two matches?
Abdallah Mubiru: Both matches (at home against Burkina Faso and away to Malawi) are very important for the country, team, players and us the technical team. All these two matches are equally important. Whereas we need to seal the AFCON slot at home, the most crucial game will be against Malawi. Under all circumstances, the away game will be key. We need to get results from both games. I know, it will not be an easy game against Burkina Faso but we have the potential to get the positive results. The winning spirit of playing at home needs to be back. This was not visible in the last game played against South Sudan.
Uganda Cranes head coach Abdallah Mubiru during the interview at FUFA Executive House in Mengo on Wednesday
Question:How important is it to seal qualification at home?
Abdallah Mubiru: Like I have already said, winning at home remains very pertinent and important. Winning against Burkina Faso at home will give us the confidence. This will motivate the team heading into the away contest against Malawi.
Question:There are a couple of returning players on the team who had spent some time away? How fast will these players gel with the rest?
Abdallah Mubiru: Players like Murushid Juuko, Yunus Ssentamu, Abdul Lumala, Mathias Kigonya, Daniel Isiagi and others are back in the National team set up after some period away. They have been part of the National team and happy to be back in the set up. This is good news to the players. Everyone knows the abilities of these players. The entire Uganda Cranes group has a special bond and has always had the spirit to work together.
Defender Murushid Juuko is one of the returning players to the national team foldL-R: Emmanuel Okwi, Joseph Benson Ochaya and Khalid Aucho celebrate a goal at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. Aucho is suspended for home game against Burkina Faso
Question:Midfielder Khalid Aucho was sent off in the last game against South Sudan in Nairobi. How is the technical team preparing to fill the void?
Abdallah Mubiru: It is very sad that midfielder Khalid Aucho will not play against Burkina Faso because of suspension. He is a good player for the team and we shall miss him. We have able replacements like Moses Waiswa, Tadeo Lwanga and others.
Question: How would you talk about the team’s transition process at this special timing?
Abdallah Mubiru: This is a very crucial moment for us in terms of qualification again to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
However it is a very sensitive time for management to keep that spirit of qualification. About the transition, that is how life goes. You reach a certain moment when you come and have to leave. This happens in football time over and again
Question:FUFA entrusted the local coaches for these two crucial TOTAL AFCON qualifiers. How easy will it be a task for you?
Abdallah Mubiru: We have the confidence of delivering at this stage. There is a general perception in Ugandans doubting their own. We have strengths and limitations. People have to judge us by the strengths and not the limitations. It is not about myself, Charles Mbabazi and Fred Kajoba, but it will be a case of serving the country diligently and protecting the job. We are not the best coaches on the land but it is an honour that we were picked to present the local legion. We shall do all the preparations but the results belong to the mercy of God.

‘As FUFA, we set ourselves a vision to be the number one footballing nation in Africa on and off the field of play. We are very ambitious. We are very happy and not disappointed at all. There is an element of humanity and reality that we must accept. We achieved by qualifying for the first ever AFCON finals tournament. Even the best sprinter in the world started by crawling. For us as FUFA, it remains work in progress as country. As players, you are in the development stages. This should draw more appetite. FUFA has a very proper strategy to achieve the results. I want to appreciate the FUFA Youth development officer Bashir Mutyaba who has overseen that youth competitions are very organized. I also thank the clubs that have given the youth players a chance to play. Football is a process and not an event. The senior team has to play at the FIFA World Cup. To the players, keep your heads high.’ Eng Magogo stated.
