FUFA Selects Yasser Mugerwa, Tenywa for a FIFA players’ session in Morocco

FUFA has selected former national team players Yasser Mugerwa and Mubarak Tenywa to represent Ugandan players at a FIFA-organized session in Rabat, Morocco. The session, taking place from November 7-9, 2025, at the FIFA Offices, aims to address key issues facing players in the modern game, coinciding with the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final on 8th November 2025.

Mugerwa and Tenywa will join other professional players to discuss player welfare and development.
This move demonstrates FUFA’s commitment to involving former players in football activities, aligning with one of the Technical Master plan’s key pillars-life after playing football.

Over 100 former Uganda players have been integrated into the football ecosystem, taking on roles in administration, punditry, coaching and participating in CAF coaching sessions.

FUFA Supports Regional League Clubs with 545 Zakayo Balls

FUFA has continued to strengthen football development across the country through the distribution of 545 Zakayo balls to clubs in the FUFA Regional Leagues. The handover ceremony took place today at FUFA House in Mengo and was presided over by FUFA’s 2nd Vice President, Dr Azah Taibu.

A total of eight General Secretaries representing the regional football associations received the balls on behalf of 109 clubs participating in the FUFA Regional Leagues. Each club will receive five Zakayo balls to facilitate matchday and training activities.

Mafuko Rauf from Eastern Region, Turyomuriwe Samuel from Kitara Region, Ssejjemba Brian from Buganda Region, Ekaju Daniel from North East Region, Alal Eron from Northern Region, Nalwanga Berthlyne from Western Region,
Keuber Moses from the West Nile Region and Frank Kakuddu from the Kampala Region attended the ceremony.

Speaking during the ceremony, Dr Taibu explained that the initiative forms part of FUFA’s broader technical master plan aimed at supporting football development at all levels.

‘Today, we’ve had an activity here, which is part of our broader technical master plan, and it’s about distribution of equipment,’ said Dr Taibu. ‘As you will recall, we recently distributed a number of equipment to the Super League clubs, and this is a follow-up to support the regions as well. The FUFA Executive Committee made a decision to support regional football clubs with balls, and today, we have seen the Zakayo balls being distributed to a total of 109 clubs across the country. Each club will receive five balls, and this reflects our commitment as a federation to support the lower-level leaders, to make sure that they play good football, grow the game, and we grow the game together as a country.’

The Regional General Secretaries expressed gratitude to FUFA for the continued support.

The Buganda Regional CEO Brian Ssejjemba said, ‘Today, FUFA has given us five balls for each third division club. Speaking for Buganda region, we are thankful to the FUFA leadership for equipping us with match balls towards the third division men’s league. This will help our clubs successfully execute matchday activities and improve the quality of the league since the teams will now have good equipment.’

The Northern Region General Secretary Alal Eron also appreciated the support, noting its contribution towards upholding the integrity of competitions. ‘First of all, I thank FUFA for its commitment to ensuring consistency across all competitions. When you look at Rule 23 of the FUFA Competition Rules, it talks about the specification of the ball to be used at FUFA authorised competitions. This is a right step towards maintaining the integrity of competitions across regions. Most clubs have poor quality balls or very few, and this is a good supplement to what they have,’ he stated.

From the North East region, the General Secretary Ekaju Daniel said, ‘We have 16 clubs, and this is a big boost for us. We thank the FUFA President and the Executive Committee for actualising this plan. You cannot talk about football without footballs, and now that we have them, we are ready to play and promote the game even more.’

This initiative, approved by the FUFA Executive Committee, builds on earlier support extended to all 16 Uganda Premier League clubs, 16 FUFA Big League clubs, and 12 FUFA Women Super League clubs. In total, FUFA’s recent distribution of Zakayo balls across these competitions is valued at nearly UGX 200 million.

Through such initiatives, FUFA continues to reaffirm its commitment to football development by equipping clubs with quality resources to enhance the standard of play and sustainability of competitions at all levels.

CAF B Coaching Course Module Two Concludes at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru

The second module of the CAF B Coaching Course officially concluded today at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru. The course, which began on 9th June 2025, brought together 25 participants from various clubs across the country.

Speaking at the end of the session, FUFA Technical Director Ali Mwebe shared insights into the next phase of the programme.
“We are sending the coaches back to their respective clubs for internship. During this time, they will implement tasks assigned by the course instructors. After the 60-day internship period, the coaches will return to Njeru for the fourth and fifth modules, each comprising 40 hours of contact time with instructors,” Mwebe explained.

He further outlined that the final stage of the course will involve both theoretical and practical examinations.

‘The structure of this course is comprehensive. For instance, today the coaches were introduced to the use of Catapult technology—a key tool in modern football performance analysis.’

Mwebe also commended the FUFA leadership for prioritising sports science.

‘The FUFA President and Executive have invested heavily in sports science, which is a central component of the FUFA Technical Master Plan. However, it’s important that our elite coaches are educated on how to interpret and apply the data collected through such technology. This integration of science and technical knowledge is essential to producing the kind of coaches our country needs.’

The CAF B Coaching Course is part of FUFA’s broader strategy to elevate the standards of football through the structured development of coaches, ensuring that players—both girls and boys—receive proper training at all levels.

Elite Coaching Development: 24 Coaches complete CAF A Diploma Coaching Course

A total of 24 coaches, consisting of tacticians from various divisions, saw out block seven (7) of the training yesterday– which was the final assessment of all the participants, thus completing the six month-long course that began in May with pre-entry assessment of candidates to select the final 25 from 49 applicants.

CAF Instructor Francis Kimanzi supervised the last phase of the course which was then officially closed by FUFA Deputy CEO- Services Humphrey Mandu who was the chief guest. All the coaches received certificates of completion.

Mandu told the coaches that they are a vital pillar to the future of Ugandan football. He also reiterated FUFA’s commitment to embracing capacity building.

“Being in football management, nothing is possible without key stakeholders like you. And at the level you have reached, football in Uganda is going to be squarely hinged on your progress.”

“This crop that has come out today is the future of our football in Uganda. So, take yourselves as a very high breed of football coaches. Of course you will move with the others who are already there. They are doing a great job but I believe you will come up with a different concept.”

“As FUFA, we have very many concepts we are pushing, and the mission is – we want to be the number one footballing nation in Africa, on and off the pitch.”

“We need you and we are going to rely on you. Please show all your abilities and change, and brand yourselves.Let’s work together. In case you need any help, we are available as administrators and as FUFA. The federation is going to continue supporting you in all aspects, in terms of technology and more coaching courses because it is the best way we can achieve our technical master plan.” He added.

Areas of learning included; theory of coaching, practical sessions, match analysis, leadership and management, sports science and nutrition, first aid and injuries, media relations, among others.

    Class captain Badru Kaddu, who is also a coach at Express FC, said;

“We thank the Federation so much, and we ask you to convey our appreciation to the FUFA President Hon. Moses Magogo Hassim. We are very grateful to his great behind the scene work he did to see that these high level courses comeback to Uganda.”

“It had indeed taken us long without these courses and we are the first people to enjoy the new convention from CAF. We are not going to embarrass you.”

“It has been a long way – six months down the road when are studying. We came here half full, and we are now full of modern football knowledge. We are going to serve the country and uplift the standards of football going forward.”

Lead instructor Francis Kimanzi appealed to the coaches to remain relevant to football development.

“You are now the ambassadors for the next day. We have to be seen doing something good to open opportunities for the coaches behind us because it is not easy to get these high profile courses from CAF.”

“It involves a lot of hard work, lobbying and knocking on people’s doors. Let’s make it easy for the CEO to bring these courses here. This class of 24 coaches has to be seen doing good work out there, please don’t close that door by doing nothing.”

“Expound on the knowledge you have acquired here in the last six months. Keep the fire burning, make more research and rebuild yourself.”

“Education is not a guarantee to success. But we shall see the confidence you have, the way you package yourself, how you present yourself to the media. The confidence that you will bring to the touchline will tell something. I wish you the best.”

  • FUFA convenes technical stakeholders engagement aimed at redefining Elite Talent Development

FUFA convenes technical stakeholders engagement aimed at redefining Elite Talent Development

FUFA on Tuesday, 26th November 2024 held a football technical stakeholders’ meeting at Jevine Hotel in Kampala. The engagement saw several coaches, instructors and former player invited.

The meeting was attended by FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim, FUFA 1st Vice President Justus Mugisha, FUFA Executive Committee Members Ronnie Kalema and Apollo Ahimbisibwe plus FUFA CEO Edgar Watson.

Also present was FIFA Regional Technical Consultant Dominique Niyionzima and FUFA Football Development Director Ali Mwebe.

The day’s discussion hinged on creation of a pathway for an elite footballer, right from the age of 13 to life after football.

FUFA President indicated it is high time that the country changed the way footballers are developed in order to create a holistic player.

“As a Federation, we have registered success in the areas of governance and business but the pillar of sport had challenges. We therefore, took the initiative of creating a synchronized way of creating a proper life cycle of a player we want,” He said.

“We introduced the FUFA Technical Master Plan that covers a player’s life in four phases of mass football, elite football, professional football and life after football. At the moment, we have mass football projects going on but what brings us here today, is elite talent development.” The President added.

FIFA Regional Technical Consultant Dominique Niyionzima was full of praise for FUFA given the various efforts made at developing the game of football in Uganda.

“One thing that has defined FUFA is leadership. I oversee 13 countries in the region but it is the first time I’m seeing an FA President attending such an engagement and he is active throughout. I have had the privilege to look through the content in your Technical Master Plan and I believe this is the game changer for Ugandan football.” He said.

The engagement started with an open-discussion where participants shared their opinions and suggestions in regard to the five salient questions asked.

    The questions

1 – Uganda in the past boosted of technically gifted players who featured for a long time. Why don’t we have such players today?

2 – Why have Ugandan players failed to make the grade in the top Leagues?

3 – Uganda used to have giant, tall and strong players. Why has this changed over the years?

4 – What is Uganda’s competitive advantage over other countries?

5 – What is the most suitable philosophy and playing style for Ugandan Football?

Later in the day, Petros Koukouras, a staff in the FUFA Football Development Department presented the new philosophy and football curriculum that FUFA is drafting and will be finalised soon.

There were further presentations by Executive Secretary of the Football Development Committee, Ronnie Kalema on the new coaching education changes.

Among the changes that FUFA wants to introduce is the new grading of coaches from 1-7. Consideration of Academic qualificiations, experience and other managerial courses inorder to create holistic football coaches.

Ali Mwebe, also made a presentation about the 12 Regional Centres of Football Excellence that FUFA is creating.

He revealed that FUFA will take care of the head coaches, provide balls, structured programmes, competitions and training gear among others.

  • CAF A Module, Block 4 completed at Multi Tech Business School

CAF A Module, Block 4 completed at Multi Tech Business School

The six-month long coaching course under the CAF Coaching Convention resumed for more structured 40hrs from Tuesday 12th November 2024 to Saturday 16th November 2024.

Before turning up for the face-to-face sessions, the participants had a field visit in 2 groups one at KCCA FC and the other at NEC FC in Bugoloobi where they observed a training session on either side as well as interactions with technical and administrative staff of both clubs on technical leadership and management field topics as part of internship program.

The module done at Multitec Business Institute had participants undertake vital sessions in specialized areas like leadership and management, sports science, medical and nutrition as well as football fitness, performance tracking and reporting system.

Coaches were introduced to Catapult system for an insight into operations requirements. But most specifically data consumption in shaping their football training programs based on scientific data.

“We are very much aware of the changing trends in the game, especially the integration of science and technology. The FUFA President and his Executive Committee took a bold step to purchase Catapult equipment for the men’s and women’s top leagues. We are very pleased that this aspiration of the FUFA Technical Master Plan was prioritized. We trained users who were the primary agents of this technology at clubs. By integrating this learning into coaching courses of this magnitude, we ensure that head coaches are brought up to speed with the equipment and its scientific data to enhance their training programs for better football results,” said Ali Mwebe, FUFA Football Development Director.

“It was our opportunity to dive deep into the 12 volume and intensity metrics tracked and reported on by the catapult one system. It was such a valuable addition to our base knowledge of the system. We had opportunity to ask many questions and interact with the data, it’s so informative in shaping a proper weekly Micro-cycle periodization with visual volumes and intensity of training sessions done from a match till a match.” Said Coach Abbey Kikomeko of BUL FC.

The participants also undertook live match observation of Uganda vs South Africa AFCON Qualifiers as entire group for detailed match analysis as part of the block and practical application of the unit of match analysis.

The course shall proceed with the final module that is comprised of Block 6 and examination block 7 in December.

  • FUFA and KCCA Extend FIFA Football For Schools Program to 79 schools in Kampala Region

FUFA and KCCA Extend FIFA Football For Schools Program to 79 schools in Kampala Region

FUFA and Kampala Regional Football Association in partneship with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) on Tuesday extended the FIFA flagship grassroots football development program, FIFA FOOTBALL FOR SCHOOLS across the city.

The event follows a national launch that was done in June 2024 at FUFA Technical Centre Njeru in presence high profile FIFA guests.

The event saw games teachers from 79 Government-aided Primary Schools under KCCA from all the 5 divisions of Kampala City undergo a one-day training seminar of football for schools’ philosophy which combine basic football with life skills for school going children aged 4-14. Additionally, each of the 79 schools was given 15 balls

The event was graced Jimmy Amatre, Deputy Director of Social Services at KCCA as well Willis Muwanguzi, Kampala Region Executive Committee member who represented the Chairman of Kampala Regional Football Association.

“I have also seen how hard Uganda has worked to make football more accessible for young people across the whole nation and I commend the federation for working with FIFA for the launch of football for school in the country earlier this year. Education is vitally important for any nation’s development especially when the country has one of the youngest populations in the world as Uganda does, FIFA football for schools will help with this mission using the power of football to teach important values to the young girls and boys and investing in Uganda’s future. And this programme combined with the many projects linked to FIFA Forward will help develop future national team players and contribute to the health of everyone touched by football in Ugandan society. I hope it will also play its role in making next generation of Uganda’s legends like those who reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 1978 or more recently the Cranes that participated in 2017 and 2019 editions of the tournament. On the women side too, the future is bright as proven by the participation of the Crested cranes in the 2022 women’s Africa cup of nations.” He said.

FIFA Football for Schools was a highlight by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in his message to Ugandan football family as FUFA marked 100 years of existence in October.

The theory and practical sessions which also included Safeguarding of children in football was conducted by trainers from FUFA headed by Joan Namusisi, Phiona Nansubuga and Peter Emojong together with other Regional Trainers of trainers who recently attended the course in Njeru.

The next event shall be held in West Nile Region (Koboko and Arua) targeting 250 primary schools from Westnile Region.
