    FUFA launches anti-match fixing campaign

Football, like any other sport, has seen a drastic change in its development over the years. Today, one can safely say that football is dictated by the direction of money, with players and coaches seeking lucrative contracts and media companies forking out millions to secure exclusive rights to broadcast games.

However, the more the game develops, the more challenges it faces some of which are sophisticated in nature. One dark area that continues to tarnish the game’s glossy reputation is the recurring issue of match-fixing.

It is upon this background that FUFA has on Monday launched an anti-match fixing campaign aimed at curbing the vice.

While launching the campaign, FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim indicated there is will from the Federation to stop the persisting challenge.

“We are here to launch an anti-match fixing campaign and this is an opportunity for us to read from the same page as FIFA who are at the fore front of this battle. We are aware that the more you promote football, the more you expose it to challenges and equally we must find solutions to them,” he started.

FUFA Presient Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim during the launch of the anti match fixing campaign.

“Football today is facing a problem of match manipulation just like the wider society is faced with challenges like hunger, terrorism and money laundering. Match fixing kills the game because the beauty of football is in uncertainty. If you kill this element and results are predetermined then the game will not survive.”

The President also stated it is the Federation’s duty to fight match fixing and certain measures have been put in place.

FUFA Presient Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim.

“Whereas the players and match officials are the easiest targets, as FUFA we are coming up with measures that will desist anyone involved in the game from match fixing. A phone number (0787063409) and email address protect@fufauganda.com have been put in place and whoever has information can report to us.” He said.

The President also revealed that for the next month, FUFA will give amnesty to anyone who has been involved in match fixing and can come out to denounce the vice. The Immunity will be in line with the football regulations.

FUFA CEO Edgar Watson highlighted how FUFA will reach out to the general public through sensitization programmes aimed at fighting match fixing.

FUFA CEO Edgar Watson speaking at the launch.

“Today’s press conference is just the start of a long-term programme. Going forward, FUFA will embark on media campaigns to educate the masses, print out education material, reach out to clubs and coordinate with other Member Associations to interlink information.” The CEO stated.

Charles Twiine, a member of the FUFA Investigations Chamber called for collective efforts from all the football stakeholders.

FUFA Investigations Chamber member Charles Twiine.

“We are talking of a vice whose effects are unprecedented, cuts across different nations and very sophisticated. This calls for synergy of efforts to come up with robust mechanism.” Twiine indicated.

FUFA Legal Manager, Dennis Lukambi outlined the steps FUFA will make in case of any reports in regard to match fixing.

    FUFA Legal Manager Dennis Lukambi.

FUFA signed an MoU with a data collecting firm called Sportradar to get information from our first and second division for the start. The same company is working with FIFA and this will enable us get intelligence reports.”

Our collaboration with Sportradar will enable us to make thorough investigations and identify the culprits.”

FUFA and  Sportradar Integrity Services are cooperating towards gathering relevant investigation on actual events. The same company is working with FIFA and this will enable us get intelligence reports.”

The other measures will include, stopping games from taking place if there is sufficient evidence and withdrawing of players or match officials from games if cited in any match fixing scenarios prior.

“On the sporting side of the game, there are three key components; players, coaches and referees. Therefore, refereeing is a crucial in football development. • Magogo top scorers’ award introduced for Kampala League teams

Magogo top scorers’ award introduced for Kampala League teams

Scoring goals is a trademark for strikers in any team but the fans get entertained the most when their heroes celebrate after the ball has crossed the goal line.

Such moments are likely to be witnessed more often this season following a new initiative by FUFA Executive Committee Member Dr. Apollo Ahimbisibwe to reward leading goal scorers for teams playing at the Regional level, 4 th and 5 th Division leagues in Kampala.

As a way of motivating strikers to score more goals, Dr. Ahimbisibwe has introduced the ‘Magogo Top Scorer’s Award’ which will come with a cash prize to any player that scores 15 or more goals per season in the third, fourth and fifth division leagues of Kampala Region.

‘We are trying to motivate our strikers to score more goals and on this note, we believe when there is a cash prize, it will motivate them to score more goals. Fans need to see more goals and creativity of how the players score’ noted Dr. Ahimbisibwe.

The award is named after the current FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim who has transformed football in the Country.

‘It will be called Magogo top Scorer’s Award. We believe it will motivate players to score more goals thus getting better strikers’ added Dr. Ahimbisibwe.

Dr. Ahimbisibwe also embarked on a programme to support and give back to the football teams playing under the Kampala Region Football Association that he represents on the FUFA Executive.

Accompanied by the Chairman Kampala Region Kasalirwe Dirisa and his Deputy Nkuggwa, Dr. Ahimbisibwe was welcomed by the Nakawa District Football Association Chairman Lobbo Christopher where he donated to every club two balls each playing in the fourth and fifth division leagues.

Rubaga District Football Association has also benefited from the programme. Close to 100 clubs playing at the DFA Level are set to gain from the programme.

“We are embarking on a program that was initiated in Kampala region to give out balls to all third and fourth division clubs in the entire Kampala Region Football Association. The initiative is to help clubs and we thought it would be nice to start with balls because the game cannot be played without a ball”

Dr. Ahimbisibwe further encouraged the District Football Association Chairmen and the Region’s boss to start looking at and planning for football as a money-generating investment which must be run as a business venture.

“The introduction of FUFA Tv on market should get everyone involved to build a product that will bring the benefits to the game from sponsors, market for players, data analysis and media consumption” noted Apollo.

The same programme of ball distribution will be extended to the other three District Football Associations (Kawempe, Makindye and Central) that make up Kampala Region FA in due course by Dr. Ahimbisibwe.

We usually meet at stadia and press conferences but we do not get enough time to discuss the pressing issues. With such an engagement, everyone is free to speak and criticize because feedback is important,” he said before adding.

“Media plays key roles including educating, sensitizing, informing and entertaining. And there is no institution that can survive without media. We believe this engagement helps to push our agenda of becoming the number one footballing nation in Africa on and off the pitch.”

The three-day educational course was organised under the FIFA Women’s League Development Programme with specific attention on improving capacity building for the personnel handling media, Communications and marketing aspects of the clubs featuring in the FUFA Women Super League and FUFA Women Elite League and reporters of women football.

FUFA Deputy CEO-Football Decolas Kiiza while making the closing remarks thanked the participants who sacrificed their time to attend the three-day training.

‘You have been taken through various educational materials in the three days you have been in Njeru. You must now be aware that we have three goals to score in Governance, Sport and in Business. We now need a number of things to be able to do this. One of them is the hard way but most importantly the human resources as well. For you to have sacrificed these three days, on this particular course it is a very good initiative towards our mission of enhancing and creating more people aware especially the human resource for us to be able to score the other goals’ noted Kiiza.

“We want to thank FIFA because, under this program which was 100% sponsored by FUFA, it was through a FIFA program for League Development that we secured this course. We want to express our gratitude to the FUFA President and his Executive for having this collaborative initiative to support the FUFA Women Super League. We want to pledge as always that all these resources will not be put to waste. We want to ensure that people trained will be needed to support the League. I thank all our instructors and as the Federation, we are fully committed to continue sharing with you knowledge. I urge all the participants to prioritize marketing & communication because they are key in achieving our vision of becoming the number one footballing nation in Africa on & off the field. It is very important as media officers to follow the principles of communication when you go back to execute duties at your various clubs. On behalf of the Federation, we thank FIFA for the continuous support of Women Football in Uganda. This year, FIFA funded a Club licensing Workshop for Women Football & it was successful. We also thank FUFA for the continued support towards Women Football. I now officially declare the three day Women Football Marketing & Communication workshop closed’ said Mulindwa.

The day’s final presentation was on match organisation handled by CAF General Coordinator Ali Mwebe which highlighted planned activities from pre-match, match day and post-match with set targets.

Everyone attached to the club must be involved in preparations and organization but need to be informed about targets. Preparation, timing, budgeting, distribution of responsibilities according to abilities and teamwork are always key for a successful match’ remarked Mwebe

Standing before you I wouldn’t imagine that someday I would be here at FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru sharing football knowledge with my colleagues in the field of media. The main aim for this workshop was to learn and gain more knowledge on marketing and communication. It will help us to promote women’s football through our balanced stories that we cover about the game’ noted Apio.

Capacity building is a key area in developing football especially off the pitch. FUFA is aware of the aforementioned fact and there are always deliberate plans to make sure more human resource is employed.

Match Coordinators are very important in making games are organized and played without any blemishes.

It is upon this background that FUFA has organized a three-day match coordinators course, the first of its kind in Africa.

“The value of the General Coordinators Course is huge to the management of game day experience not only in Uganda but the entire region because this is the very first General Coordinators Course by a Member Association in CAF and one of our key pillars in the hat trick is Sport.  You can not achieve sporting success without the conversant human resource. This is one of the critical areas we are training and as FUFA we are very proud for taking this initiative and we expect this to improve our matchday experience and the game of football in general,” he stated.

Kabelo on the other hand lauded FUFA for the initiative and asked participants to start practicing at the lower levels of the game so as to garner experience.

CAF General Match Coordinator Kabelo Bosilong

‘I thank FUFA for such a great initiative of the Match Coordinators course which has not been done by any African FA. You participants are fortunate that you have where to start from rather than us who had to start from the top.  In CAF, FUFA is one of the top three FAs performing well off the pitch and I thank the Federation leaders for the great work done. This course will help you get the knowledge on how to organize matches and you can go from here and practice the lowest level.” Said Kabelo.

BUL FC CEO Joseph Mutaka is one of the participants.

The course will run up to Wednesday covering several areas such as matchday hospitality, game management, safety and security etc.
