FUFA and Stanbic Bank hand over assorted items to Lira Babies Home and Teso Bar Community

On Saturday, June 3rd, 2023, teams from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and Stanbic Bank were in Lira for the Stanbic Uganda Cup Final between Police FC and Vipers SC and as it has been in the past editions, a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) campaign is always carried out in the host district.

The teams were received by Dan Obote, a representative from the North on the FUFA Executive Committe and Sister Francis, the caretaker of Lira Babies Home.

While addressing the people at the handover, Leila Nankya the Events Manager at FUFA said that they were advised to provide support to the two communities so that they have one less problem to deal with.

“We were advised to come here, and support and these items were collected from well-wishers in the community. FUFA has brought clothes while other basic human items have been brought by Stanbic Bank,” She said.

Stanbic Bank was represented by Sunny Mucwampaka the Lira Branch Manager, Diana Kahunde the Marketing Manager and Bernard Ogwal the Northern Region Manager.

“At Stanbic, we looked at the most basic things to support the babies home. Specific items delivered include millet. This act represents what Stanbic Bank is, we are touching the community.” – Sunny Mucwampaka, Lira Branch Manager

“I want to thank FUFA for what they are doing in the community using football. At the bank, community is very important. I am happy to note that is a beginning. Home is critical. We cannot drive banking when homes are not taken care of.” – Diana Kahunde, Marketing Manager at Stanbic bank.

“The bank cares, what you are seeing is not the first and not the last.” – Bernard Ogwal, Stanbic Bank Northern Region Manager

Fred Frank Kumakech, the Commercial Director at FUFA highlighted the organisation’s commitment to helping the community as he made his address.

“Grateful for giving children a second chance to life and love; it’s our commitment as FUFA in carrying out our work to be empathetic and give love and hope in the community where we operate, and Lira Babies Home is just one of the beneficiaries of such many CSR activities that we run.” he said.

FUFA Executive Committee Member representing Northern Uganda thanked Sister Francis, the caretaker of the babies’ home and highlighted that the federation will see how best to keep supporting the facility.

“As FUFA we don’t only play football, the things we have delivered here is one of the ways we provide service. I also want to thank Sister for the work she is doing here. We shall engage with you on another day to see how else to provide support.” he said.

The FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim was represented at the handover event by Dr. Apollo Ahimbisibwe, an Executive Committee Member representing Kampala Region.

In his address, he commended the federation for having a policy that supports Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

“I thank FUFA for having this policy, and Stanbic Bank for accepting to be our partners. We have done this since 2016.” he said.

“As FUFA, everywhere we host the Stanbic Uganda Cup Final, we reach out to the less privileged in the district.” he added.

“We do this because the organisation is run by human beings with a heart. Human nature forgets that when we have problems, it is humans to come and help.” he concluded.

  • FUFA Cup of Hope Returns to bring smiles and hope to Luzira Upper Prison inmates

FUFA Cup of Hope Returns to bring smiles and hope to Luzira Upper Prison inmates

It was all smiles and jubilations in the Luzira Upper Prison as inmates welcomed their favourite visitors from FUFA at the FUFA Cup of Hope finals 2023.

The FUFA Cup of Hope is annual football tournament that is organized and sponsored by FUFA as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the Luzira upper prisons section for inmates who play in teams christened with names of clubs that play in the Uganda Premier league. The tournament had been halted by the Covid 19 pandemic and only returned this year after the situation normalised.

Presently there are 10 teams; URA, Express, Bright Stars, Blacks Power, Villa, Vipers, Azam, KCCA, Onduparaka and Proline. This year’s edition kicked off on May 1st and was concluded on May 28 with Proline and Onduparaka facing off in the final that was graced FUFA President Hon Magogo Moses Hassim and a delegation that he led that also included former Uganda Cranes stars who are part of the President’s XI and two former inmates who went there to give testimony as well as offer hope to their colleagues.

The FUFA delegation comprised of 2nd Vice President Darius Mugoye, ExCom member Ronnie Kalema, FUFA CEO Edgar Watson, Big League delegate Hassan Kirunda, National Teams manager Patrick Ntege, Commercial Director Fred Kumakech, Events Manager Leilah Nankya, Events officer Phoebe Kutamba.

These were received by the Officer in Charge Upper Maximum Prison Senior Superintendent of Prisons Mbaziira Bryan Corr who then introduced them to the Regional Prisons Commander – Commisioner of Prisons Ms Nabunya Stella who commended FUFA for the generous and humble gesture that supplements their efforts of holistically rehabilitating the inmates by using football.

“I want to welcome you to Luzira and especially thank you for the support you render to Luzira Upper prison. I only wish you could make it at least 2 times every year and possibly extend it to other correctional facilities because we have several in the Kampala extra region including; Kampala remand, Kigo prison, Kitalya among others because recreational activities is one way we use to rehabilitate the prisoners and football is the most popular sport.” Commissioner of Prisons Stella Nabunya remarked.

Officer in Charger SSP Mbaziira was full of praises of the FUFA President for his interest and commitment in the tournament.

“To understand the value of a smile is when you give it to someone who has nothing left to give. Thank you FUFA team lead by Hon. Magogo, Uganda cranes Ex Internationals, thank you Uganda prisons staff and most importantly thank you dear inmates for playing very well and keeping the discipline. Sports excellence is all about discipline.” He stated.

In his remarks FUFA President reaffirmed his and the federations commitment to continue supporting the tournament as away of giving back to the community.

“It is in our objectives and part of FUFA’s CSR to make sure we give back to the vulnerable members of our communities and may need hope. The FUFA Cup of hope is on our annual calendar in May and we will continue supporting the development of referees, coaches, administrators among others such that we develop capacity amongst you to enable you manage your own football.” – FUFA President stated.

“You may be here for many different reasons, but we believe one day you will go back and reunite with your families and the communities. Our purpose of coming here is always to keep that hope alive, when you are here it is not the end. You have people praying and wishing you utmost wellness. Finally, I want to thank management of Uganda prisons and you people for accepting our suggestion of changing the names of your teams from foreign clubs to our local clubs.” He added.

The President XI played a curtain raiser match against a select side from Upper Prison – Upper Stars that ended in a one-all draw before Proline Upper Prison took on and defeated Onduparak 2-0 in the finals of FUFA Cup of Hope 2023.

FUFA President handed over an assortment of equipment; 4 sets of jerseys, 10 ball and a pump, 2 pairs of goalkeepers gloves, a first aid box, referees equipment(cards, whistles, stop clock), 2 sacks of sugar, 2 sacks of rice and 2 goats donated to the inmates of the Luzira Upper Prison handed over to the officer In Charge SSP Mbaziira together with Upper Prisons Sports Association Chairperson Ambrose Turyasingura

    Thank you for Supporting Football.

The FUFA President also expressed his appreciation to the management of Uganda Prisons Services for their love and support for football through their two sister clubs.

The other thing I want to thank Uganda Prison service for their love for football. You own two football clubs; Maroons FC that plays in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League and She Maroons a women’s football club that has been promoted to the FUFA Womens Super league on and has also qualified for the finals of the FUFA Women’s Cup to be played on June 10th in Kumi against Uganda Martyrs Lubaga WFC. These are very competitive clubs that contribute to the development and promotion of the game.

  • FUFA offers Hope to Prison Inmates

FUFA offers Hope to Prison Inmates

By the mere fact that you are alive, it qualifies you to be a potential candidate for Prison irrespective of your wealth or power.

As part of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, here is our story with Uganda’s Biggest Prison, Luzira.

Luzira Upper Prison keeps hold of convicts and those on remand for capital offenses. Some of the inmates are on death row, life imprisonment, serving tens of years while others are uncertain of their future as their cases are yet to be determined.

The reality of life is that not all inmates are actually guilty of the cases they are charged or even convicted for.

It is of course not a simple task for the relevant authorities to separate between the innocent and the guilty in some cases.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo expertly dribbles past Upper Stars’ team captain Frank Macho during the charity match at Luzira on 12th March 2017

What is important to note is that there are cases for those who have been put on death row that have eventually regained freedom. Hope is all that can be given in all cases

On 12th March 2017, FUFA led by myself and a host former Ex-International Football players made a maiden visit to Luzira Upper Prison. It was my first time in this place and I was so humbled.

Something is useless when you have it until you lose it.  Freedom is not a foregone guarantee.

Former Uganda Cranes, Lukuli United, Police, Express and SC Villa intelligent forward Hassan ‘Figo’ Mubiru was a joy to watch at Luzira

The FUFA President’s XI team, composed of former Uganda Cranes Players, played a football match against the Upper Stars (A team of inmates).

Their team composed of very good, talented young players although the pitch was bad and all bare ground

We got to learn that there is a football league competition composed of 10 clubs with inmates as players.

The Clubs had European Clubs names. We agreed that they change the names to Ugandan Football Clubs Names and FUFA would rename and support the competition, the FUFA Cup of Hope.

    Luzira Upper XI

The competition was played for 2017/8 Season and now 2018/9 Season was completed on 17th March 2019 and as a curtain raiser, The FUFA President’s XI once again played against the Upper Stars and the game ended 6-4 in favour of the Upper Stars with the ultimate final match of Express FC beating KCCA FC

. The interesting part is when former players of Express FC and KCCA FC where invited to the dressing rooms to give team talks to their respective clubs. A player for Express FC called Kasibante Bashir was an extremely outstanding talent and a beauty to watch

What we also learnt is emphasis on FUFA, CAF and FIFA Rules and the contracts and transfer of players between the clubs that is lucrative for the talented players

Since 2017, FUFA has delivered the promises of useable things like Sugar, Soap and cooking oil from the Uganda Cranes Sponsors thus BIDCO, a Brand New Desktop Computer, Sporting Equipment of Balls, Referees Equipment, Gloves and most importantly delivered a course for referees to manage the FUFA Cup of Hope Competition.

Next year it is going to be a course for Coaches.

Luzira Express FC in a group photo with FUFA President and OC Luzira prison after their being crowned winners

I have also observed that with these inmates who are kept into this place with not much activity and many of them very young and energetic, a proper pitch would provide them an opportunity to continue living in hope of getting free one day but also enhancing their talents with the unlimited free time they got.

Many could be rehabilitated and become more useful when they reconnect with society. An Artificial Pitch would be the most appropriate considering the usage of the pitch

As FUFA, we get excited that our game can be used to give Hope to persons in these situations.

The FUFA President hands over the red and yellow cards with the other refereeing equipment to the head of referees at the Luzira Upper Prisons

    Luzira prison OC SSP Sentalo

The level of excitement and passion exhibited during the football matches definitely takes away albeit for moments the reality of confinement that these human beings are going through.

We have been told when we leave, it takes them over a month talking about the event and hoping for the next one to come

It is only the Almighty God who knows the real truth of the guilty and innocent in that place and will definitely judge their respective earthly works.

We only pray that the guilty are forgiven and learn from the experience to become more useful citizens after if they ever regain their freedom and the innocent ones have justice delivered
