  • FUFA–UTB Partnership to Position Football as a Driver of Tourism Growth

FUFA–UTB Partnership to Position Football as a Driver of Tourism Growth

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has officially unveiled a strategic partnership with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), a collaboration designed to deliberately fuse football with tourism in a move aimed at accelerating national development, global visibility and economic growth.

The partnership was announced today morning at the UTB Headquarters, 6th Floor, Block C, Lugogo House, Plot 42 Lugogo Bypass, bringing together key stakeholders from football and tourism to align their platforms around a shared national purpose.

FUFA 2nd Vice President Dr. Azah Taibu described the partnership as a defining moment for Ugandan football, noting that FUFA’s mandate goes beyond organizing competitions to actively contributing to the country’s economic and social progress.

‘This partnership is very critical for the federation. First and foremost, we are committed as a federation to be inclusive, but also to contribute significantly to the economy of this country,’ Dr. Taibu said.

She emphasized that Uganda’s ongoing tenfold growth strategy places tourism at the center of national transformation, and football — as the most followed and emotionally connected sport — must play its role in that journey.

‘Tourism will contribute the biggest share of that strategy, so why do we not then be part of that journey as football?’ she posed.

Through the partnership, FUFA and UTB will jointly leverage football’s reach to promote Uganda’s destinations, culture, cuisine and hospitality. Fans will be encouraged to blend football watching and supporting with travel, exploration and storytelling — transforming every matchday into an opportunity to showcase Uganda’s beauty to the world. Dr. Taibu stressed that football’s emotional pull creates unique spaces for storytelling and national branding.

The initiative will activate fan-led digital campaigns that invite supporters to share where they are watching the matches from, whether in cities, villages, tourist sites or social gatherings. These shared moments are intended to spotlight Uganda’s scenery, culture and hospitality while reinforcing football as a connector of people and places.

Dr. Taibu further highlighted the inclusive nature of both football and tourism, pointing out that the partnership aligns with Uganda’s broader values of equity, sustainability and shared opportunity. She noted that by deliberately merging football with tourism, FUFA is positioning the game as a tool for national storytelling, cultural pride and economic participation, allowing fans to benefit not only emotionally but experientially.

‘Can we give our fans more than just football? Can they enjoy the game while also exploring their country, its beauty, culture and food and much more’ she said.

UTB Chief Executive Officer Juliana Kagwa, speaking on behalf of the tourism sector, welcomed the partnership and commended FUFA for recognizing football’s potential as a tourism driver. She also described the Uganda Cranes as powerful ambassadors for the country’s identity beyond football.

‘Nothing will happen in Uganda for the foreseeable future that does not directly touch on tourism, and we are lucky that the federation identified this opportunity,’ Juliana said.

FUFA believes that by harnessing football’s energy and merging it with tourism’s experiential value, Ugandans and visitors alike will gain more than just ninety minutes of football. They will gain memories, connections and a deeper appreciation of a country rich in culture, nature and warmth.

Dr. Taibu concluded by encouraging Ugandans to actively participate in the partnership by sharing their matchday experiences, exploring their surroundings and proudly telling Uganda’s story wherever they watch the game.

“As you watch the games, be happy, but most importantly, share your moments so that the world learns more about your country,” she said.

  • Uganda Fall to Algeria in Final 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier, Finish Second in Group G

Uganda Fall to Algeria in Final 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier, Finish Second in Group G

Uganda ended their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualification campaign with a 2–1 defeat to Algeria in on Tuesday night. The result saw Uganda finish second in Group G with 18 points, level with Mozambique but ahead on goal difference, while Algeria topped the group with 25 points to qualify for the next round.

Steven Mukwala put the team ahead in the 6th minute, and the Cranes held strong until the halftime mark.

Two second-half penalties shifted the advantage to the home side, leading to the final score.

Head coach Paul Put praised his players for their effort and expressed pride in their campaign despite the loss.

‘It was a very tough game. We played against a very good team. But it is hard to lose like this with two penalties because it was the pressure of the public that influenced the referee. Certainly the second one, I think the law says to protect the goalkeeper. But it was a difficult game, we were all surprised.’

‘For the first one, I cannot judge, I have to see the images. It has been a long trip for us, and the boys did everything. They fought and gave their best. We had the best opportunity to score the second goal, but unfortunately we did not. If we had scored, the game would have been finished. But I am proud of the boys.’

‘We finished second with 18 points, which is very good. Now we have to prepare for AFCON. First, we shall play two friendly matches in November to follow up on the players before starting preparations at the beginning of December. There is not much time left. Unfortunately, we could not reach the playoffs, but we shall focus on the upcoming international games.’

Uganda now turn their attention to the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco, where the Cranes will aim to build on their strong World Cup qualifying campaign.

  • FUFA Unveils Laryea Kingston as Head coach of the Uganda National Men’s Football Junior Teams

FUFA Unveils Laryea Kingston as Head coach of the Uganda National Men’s Football Junior Teams

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has appointed former Ghanaian international, Mr Laryea Kingston, as the full-time coach in charge of Uganda’s youth men national teams. The unveiling took place during a press conference at FUFA House, where the Federation’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Edgar Watson, highlighted the move as a major step towards strengthening Uganda’s junior national teams through year-round preparation and talent development.

In his opening remarks, Mr Watson expressed appreciation to the media and stakeholders for their continued support and outlined the long-standing challenges that have affected the growth of youth football in Uganda. He noted that junior national teams have historically only assembled when competitions were imminent, leaving limited time for proper preparation and player development.

‘We have had situations where the identification of players at underage levels happens only when a tournament is around the corner,’ said Mr Watson. ‘This has not only limited exposure for young players but has also created gaps in consistency and development. FUFA has therefore developed a Technical Master Plan, particularly focusing on youth football, to address these concerns.’

Mr Watson explained that the Federation has already established a national scouting platform aimed at identifying and tracking young talent across the country, including from upcountry regions that are often overlooked. The initiative is part of FUFA’s broader strategy to ensure continuous preparation of national youth teams and equitable talent discovery.

He added that the appointment of Mr Kingston follows a deliberate effort to bring on board a full-time coach who will dedicate himself to building Uganda’s under-15, under-17, and under-20 national teams throughout the year. ‘We have been categoric in selecting a coach who is neutral, experienced in both African and international football, and capable of identifying and nurturing young talent,’ he noted.

Mr Watson described Mr Kingston as an ideal fit for the role, highlighting his extensive experience both as a player and as a coach. A former Ghana international, Kingston represented his country at the under-15, under-17, under-20, and senior levels, and also featured for clubs in Europe, including in Scotland. He holds a UEFA A and CAF B coaching licence and has previously worked with Ghana’s under-17 national team and the Right to Play Academy.

‘The coach will work closely with the FUFA Development Director, Mr Bashir Mutyaba, and the Technical Department to ensure that our youth teams are continuously scouted, trained, and ready for national duty,’ added Mr Watson. ‘He will be a resident coach working full-time over a two-year contract, with the main goal of producing competitive and well-prepared youth teams.’

Mr Watson also confirmed that the Uganda under-17 national team, which qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals, will continue to be managed by Coach Brian Senyondo during this assignment. He praised Mr Senyondo’s contribution and noted that this would be his final engagement with the under-17 side, after which he would be available for other coaching roles within FUFA’s structures.

Taking the podium, Mr Kingston expressed his gratitude to FUFA for the trust placed in him and reflected on his past encounters with Ugandan football. ‘I still remember vividly playing against Uganda during the 2006 World Cup qualifiers in Accra,’ he said. ‘It was one of the toughest matches for us, and since then, I have always had great respect for Ugandan football.’

He also shared fond memories of his playing days alongside former Uganda Cranes star David Obua in Scotland, describing him as a close friend and a player who helped him appreciate Uganda’s football culture.

Mr Kingston spoke passionately about his motivation to become a coach, emphasising his desire to give back to the game that transformed his life. ‘Football took me off the streets and gave me a future. That is why I decided to dedicate my life to helping young players achieve their dreams. My mission in Uganda is to educate, mentor, and empower these young athletes to become better players and responsible citizens,’ he stated.

He pledged to prioritise grassroots engagement and collaboration with local clubs, academies, and community structures to identify and nurture young talent. ‘We will focus on developing not only technical skills but also discipline, teamwork, and mental strength,’ he explained. ‘Together, with the support of the federation, coaches, and the community, we can create a strong foundation for the future of Ugandan football.’

Mr Kingston concluded his remarks by expressing optimism and commitment to the task ahead. ‘It is a great honour to be part of Uganda’s football journey. I invite everyone to join hands as we work towards building youth teams that will represent the country with pride on the international stage.’

FUFA has urged the media, football fans, and the public to rally behind the new coach and support the broader youth football development programme. Mr Watson reaffirmed the Federation’s commitment to implementing the Technical Master Plan to ensure sustainable growth and competitiveness in all junior national teams.

  • Speaker’s passion for women’s football shines as FWSL trophy visits Parliament

Speaker’s passion for women’s football shines as FWSL trophy visits Parliament

The new FUFA Women Super League trophy has made its way to the Parliament of Uganda, where it was warmly received on Monday 19th May 2025 by the Speaker, Rt Hon. Anita Annet Among, in her chambers.

As part of its tour to visit influential Ugandan women, the FUFA delegation paid a courtesy call to the Speaker, a passionate advocate for women’s football. Notably, the Speaker is a strong supporter of Kampala Queens FC, which competes in the FUFA Women Super League and owner of Bukedea Comprehensive School, a rising powerhouse in girls’ football.

The FUFA delegation that met with the Speaker at her chambers was led by FUFA’s 3rd Vice President, Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi. The delegation included FUFA EXCOM member Rogers Mulindwa, Communications Director Ahmed Hussein, safety and security expert Harriet Nakimbugwe (a CAF trainee), and former league champions Zaina Namulelme (formely with Kampala Queens but now with Makerere University Ladies), Catherine Nakiridde (UCU Lady Cardinals FC), and Lydia Nyandera (Lady Doves FC).

    The FUFA 3rd Vice President praised the Rt Hon Speaker for her significant contributions to sports in Uganda, saying;

‘When it comes to football, you do not just speak about it, you live it. You are a custodian of the game, cheering, sponsoring, attending, believing and investing. You have built a stadium in Bukedea that is more than just concrete and grass as it is a symbol of hope and heritage. By gifting your people a sanctuary for sports, you’ve etched your name into Ugandan football history.

The Speaker of Parliament thanked FUFA for supporting women football.

‘I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you to the Parliament of Uganda. Thank you for choosing me to be part of this special initiative. I am deeply humbled to be selected alongside other women who share my passion for football and empowering the girl child. The girl child is a vital part of our community and the world at large, her potential is limitless, and I am passionate about supporting and uplifting her’

The Speaker added; ‘I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to FUFA for championing women’s football, a vital step towards exclusivity in the sport. We have come a long way from a time when football was exclusively for men. Today, girls proudly take to the pitch, showcasing their talent and proving that with determination, they can achieve great things. Not everyone follows the traditional path, and for those with a gift for sports, we should provide every opportunity to thrive. Personally, I find women’s football incredibly inspiring. When these talented girls succeed, they can transform their lives and those of their families. As leaders, our role is to support and nurture their potential. In Uganda’s Parliament, we have made strides in promoting sports, including football for both boys and girls. I urge FUFA to continue fostering the growth of women’s football, empowering these remarkable athletes to reach new heights’

I would love to see this trophy tour the entire country. As women in leadership positions, it’s crucial for us to mentor and inspire young girls. What FUFA is doing is commendable by promoting women’s football, you’re not only showcasing talent but also creating role models for girls nationwide. Many talented young girls lack inspiration, so I pledge my office’s support for your initiative. Please take this trophy across the country, sharing the message that football is a platform for them to shine. This is a powerful way to empower the girl child and unlock her potential.’

‘Your achievements make us incredibly proud, showcasing the immense talent and potential of girls in football often rivaling and even surpassing that of their male counterparts. I urge you to share this message with the world: girls’ football is a rapidly growing sport, and as government officials, we pledge our continued support to help you thrive.’

The speaker went on to thank the leadership of FUFA under President Hon Magogo Moses Hassim for the relentless efforts to develop and promote women football in the country.

I would like to extend my gratitude to FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim for his outstanding efforts in developing football, particularly in supporting and promoting women’s football. His passion for the cause is truly commendable.’

Finally the Speaker advised the players to work hard with determination consistently to achieve their dreams.

‘To all the young girls out there, I want to say that achieving your goals requires determination, consistency, and a clear dream. Once you have a vision, work tirelessly towards it, even in the face of challenges. Consistency is key don’t let setbacks discourage you. Keep pushing forward, and never give up until you reach your aspirations.’

The FUFA Women Super League trophy tour will culminate in a state visit on Thursday, May 22, 2025, where it will be officially welcomed by the Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni.

  • FUFA Issues Key Amendments to Club Licensing Regulations Ahead of 2025/2026 Season

FUFA Issues Key Amendments to Club Licensing Regulations Ahead of 2025/2026 Season

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has announced pivotal amendments to the Men’s and Women’s Club Licensing Regulations, taking effect from the 2025/2026 football season. These changes are part of the Federation’s broader commitment to the implementation of its Club Licensing System and the Technical Master Plan aimed at raising standards across Ugandan football.

Following a series of capacity-building programmes to boost the quality and quantity of football coaches and administrators in the country, FUFA has revised several provisions under the Administration and Personnel and Sporting Criteria of the licensing regulations.

    Starting with the 2025/2026 season:

    1. Uganda Premier League (UPL) clubs must appoint Head Coaches with a minimum of a CAF A Coaching Diploma.
    2. FUFA Big League (FBL) clubs are now required to have Head Coaches with at least a CAF B Coaching Diploma.
    3. For the FUFA Women Super League (FWSL), only coaches holding a CAF B Coaching Diploma will be eligible for head coach roles.

In a move to professionalise club management:

    1. UPL clubs must contract CEOs with a minimum FAMACO III certificate.
    2. CEOs in both the FWSL and the FBL must hold a minimum of a FAMACO II certificate.

Another landmark change under the sporting criteria mandates that:

    1. All UPL clubs must operate a women’s football team, competing in either the FUFA Women Super League or the FUFA Women Elite League.
    2. Clubs already operating women’s teams must ensure their participation in official FUFA competitions.

Additionally, in line with FUFA Circular No. 1189, all FWSL clubs must be affiliated to an active men’s football club in the Uganda Premier League, FUFA Big League, or the Regional League from the 2025/2026 season onward.

The Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League matchday 19 climaxed on Sunday, April 27, 2025, wrapping up an action-packed weekend.

On Saturday, April 26, She Corporate secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Wakiso Hill, Rines overcame She Maroons 2-0, while Olila High School held Kampala Queens to a goalless draw.

Sunday’s action saw Lady Doves, Kawempe Muslim, and Amus College WFC all collect vital wins to strengthen their positions on the table.

In Masindi, Lady Doves outmuscled Uganda Martyrs 2-0 thanks to a brilliant brace from in-form striker Resty Kobusobozi. This result lifted Lady Doves into fourth place with 33 points, while Uganda Martyrs dropped to seventh with 23 points. Kobusobozi’s double also saw her extend her lead atop the scoring charts, reaching 13 goals for the season.

Agnes Nabukenya was the star of the show, netting both goals to keep Kawempe’s title hopes alive. They now trail leaders Kampala Queens by six points, although Kampala Queens still have a game in hand. Tooro Queens remain trapped in the relegation zone with 15 points, three adrift of Olila. With only three games left, Tooro Queens must win all their remaining matches and hope Olila stumble to stand any chance of survival.

At Soroti Stadium, newcomers Amus College WFC continued their impressive debut season, edging Makerere University 2-1. Goals from Esther Namataka and Doreen Aujat sealed the win for Amus, while Zaina Namuleme pulled one back for Makerere. In a crucial fixture this Friday, Kampala Queens will visit Amus in a rescheduled game, ensuring all teams have played 19 matches ahead of the final stretch. After that, the league will pause for the 2025 USSSA national games before resuming on Saturday, May 17.

  • Uganda Cranes Ready for FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier Against Mozambique

Uganda Cranes Ready for FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier Against Mozambique

The Uganda Cranes are set to take on Mozambique in a crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier at the Cairo International Stadium on Wednesday, 20th March 2025. Speaking ahead of the match, Head Coach Paul Put and team captain Aucho Khalid expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and their readiness to fight for maximum points.

Coach Put acknowledged the challenges of assembling the squad but was optimistic about the team’s morale and work ethic in training.

“I think we all know when we make a call-up and we’re going to start the preparation that it’s always difficult to find all your players at the same time. So it’s not only for Uganda, it could be for other teams as well, but it’s not always easy. But I received the players little by little, and I think the spirit is quite okay,” he stated.

Reflecting on the team’s performance in training, Put expressed his satisfaction and underlined the importance of the upcoming match. “What I saw on the training ground, I was very happy about their performance, about their mentality, and I think it will be important for the game. You know, if you want to be dominant in your ranking, every game is important. We know that Mozambique is three points ahead of us, so it is always an important game.”

With the World Cup qualification campaign in full swing, Put reiterated the need for the players to rise to the occasion. “If you have ambition, if you want really to get good results, then you have to see what you can do. And away games are always a difficult thing, but I think that my players will understand that for us it’s a very important game, but for Mozambique it’s also an important game.”

Meanwhile, team captain Aucho Khalid assured fans that the squad was in good condition and eager for the challenge. “The boys are fine, and everyone is in good condition. They are motivated and are ready to fight for their nation and are getting what the coaches are telling them.”

With Mozambique playing in Egypt, Aucho called upon fans to come out in numbers and support the team. “I know we have several fans here in Egypt. We call upon you so that you can come and support us tomorrow as we take on Mozambique. We shall be happy to see you tomorrow.”

The midfielder also emphasized the team’s shift in focus from the recently concluded AFCON qualifiers to the World Cup campaign. “We finished the qualifiers for AFCON. So now our focus is on the World Cup qualifier, and the boys are ready to get a new challenge because it’s a World Cup qualifier and it’s also a big competition. So I think we are ready for that and the boys are ready for it.”
