In his remarks, the LOD who arrived in camp on Friday Morning also advised players to work hard and fight for the image of CAF EXCO Member and FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo together with the entire Football family back home.

Uganda U20 National team (Hippos) has flown out of Tanzania to Mauritania on Wednesday morning a board Egypt Air after a ten day training camp in Dar es Salaam in preparation for the 2021 Total AFCON U20 Finals. 25 players and 9 officials are part of the contingent.
The Hippos played two friendlies against Tanzania U20. Uganda won the first match 1-0 but fell 5-3 to their opponents in the second fixture.

The head coach Morley Byekwaso is optimistic that his team will perform well at the AFCON Tournament.
‘We lost to Tanzania 5-3 in one of our buildup games. It was not a good result but we also scored some good goals. This is the first AFCON engagement for the CECAFA U20 Champions and they will play the first match in Group A on 15th February 2021 against Mozambique before facing Cameroon two days later and complete the group stages with a match against hosts Mauritania on 20th February.

Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has on Monday 8th February 2021 organised a successful orientation workshop for Members of the FUFA Electoral Committee and Electoral Appeals Committee at Jevine Hotel, Rubaga.
It was attended by FUFA Executive Committee members led by the FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo and his three Vice Presidents Justus Mugisha, Darius Mugoye and Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, Members of the FUFA Electoral Committee and Electoral Appeals Committee. The FUFA Secretariat staff led by the CEO Edgar Watson and his Deputies also attended the induction.

In his opening remarks, the FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo called upon the members of the Electoral committee to read, internalise and acquaint themselves with the three key documents; the FUFA Statutes, FUFA Electoral code and FUFA Election Guide lines that are very vital in regard to organizing of the FUFA elections.

‘FUFA Elections are organised in accordance with the three documents that you must be conversant with. The first document is the FUFA Statutes; the people you are dealing with have read these Statutes very many times so we do not want you to be exposed after making decisions which are not in line with the Statutes. Out of the Statutes, there is the FUFA Electoral Code that is in line with the standard Electoral code of FIFA.
It is very important that you become conversant with the Electoral Code. This code and Statutes are documents that have been passed by the FUFA General Assembly which is the Supreme Legislative body of FUFA. Nobody has the mandate to change them apart from the General Assembly. Now that the last General Assembly took place, whatever we have is correct until another one takes place’

A new FUFA President and his Executive will be elected into office by August 2021 as per FUFA Statutes.
Elections will also be conducted for football leaders at the district, regional and Special Interest Groups (SIG) Football Associations.

Salient areas that need Government intervention to kick-start the professional sports sector are; Funding, Legislation, Infrastructure and Policies.
The Sports industry will grow only if there is investment and operational Government Policies.

Time for lamenting is over. We have now accessed the floor of Parliament. We shall not send someone to speak for us. We shall speak for ourselves.
FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo has for long advocated for fundamental changes in the Sports Sector in Uganda, highlighting a number of challenges it faces and finding solutions.
Bearing in mind that over 70% of Uganda’s population is below the age of 30 years, the country faces a challenge of unemployment and if solutions to this problem aren’t devised, a ticking time bomb awaits.
The Sports Economics
The Global Sports Economy is about 700 Billion USD which is Uganda’s annual budget for over 100 years that we are not partaking. One uneducated Ugandan player in the English Premier League would pay over 100 University Professors.
That is the power of talent in the modern world economics.
Uganda has produced the World’s best self-made athletes out of no scientific methods of identification, development, preparation and presentation. This country is indeed endowed with abnormal raw sports talent. This is indeed our competitive advantage.
Considering that the annual average earning of a footballer in the English Premier League is about 3.6m USD, and yet the Uganda Cranes has beaten countries with 100 top professional footballers in Europe, it is not farfetched for Uganda to export 50 football players to the top 5 leagues which would translate into over 200m USD per annum.

In the last 40 years, both China and India have moved from outside the top 20 to the top 5 world economies by maximising their competitive advantage of the largest labour forces. Japan has used technology since the turn of the World War II.
Uganda’s competitive advantage is not going to be technology but export of sports labour and sports tourism.
In addition, a large tax base from sporting goods, works and services will be created and so is the ability to buy by the persons involved in the sector. The ticking time-bomb of the unemployed youth will equally be solved once and for all.
This among many reasons prompted the FUFA President Magogo to seek an elective position. He was recently voted Member of Parliament for Budiope East Constituency in Buyende District.
In his weekly show on 102.1 FUFA fm dubbed ‘Tutegeere Omupiira’ that returned to the airwaves after a long break, Mr. Magogo congratulated sports administrators that attained elective positions and promised to front sports in Parliament.
‘I first of all want to thank the Almighty Allah for guiding us to victory in the just concluded elections. I want to congratulate all leaders from the sports sector that successfully went through at all levels. This has been our dream as the sports sector to discuss our plight where it matters’ he said in his opening remarks.

In the past, the game has had its own challenges that needed FUFA and its Members to solve. These included governance, management and technical challenges but have been largely solved. However, in order to engage the next gear, there are challenges faced by the game that football itself cannot address but the State.
‘Many people in the past have used the power of football to be elected into offices but have not used these vital offices to serve the beautiful game. This time it is going to be different. To some of us football is not just a game but a way of life’ stressed the newly elected Legislator.
Prioritisation
The priority of time, human and financial resources allocation is determined by statistics and mind-set (perception).
On the priority table for allocation for Uganda, there are neither sports statistics nor correct perception in consideration for sports which is a multi-sector activity encompassing Health, Education, Social Development, Tourism and Trade. The statistics do not reflect the contribution by sport.
For example, whereas the Education Sector took about 10.5% of the National budget for 2019/20 appropriation, sports sub-sector was allocated about 1.2% of the sector budget which 0.13% of the National Budget.
Ten (10) Government Universities shared 420bn UGX with Busitema University alone allocated twice the amount given to 52 Sports Federations serving 70% of the country’s population.
FUFA President believes all National teams from sports like the Uganda U-20 representing the country need to be funded fully by Government.
In the social development Sector, 38bn UGX allocated to the promotion of descent employment cannot find its way to support the employment that the sports sub-sector provides to persons without any form of education.
This bottom National priority order of sports is as informed by the Ugandan mind-set of defining sport as being good for the body and a recreational activity. With this, we miss or deny the fact that it is a big-time economic game changer.
We have seen how new industries have emerged in Uganda to support the traditional economic activities of agriculture and hunting.
The Oil & Gas, Transport, ICT, Manufacturing, Tourism etc have been supported by Government to take-off with proper Laws, Trained Human Resource, Policies, Budget Support, Backbone Infrastructure, Tax Holiday Incentives etc.
The main reason for the Government intervention has been justified as creation of employment for many youths and enlarging the future tax-base. Unfortunately, as a country we do not look at sports as an economic activity but leisure.
Elsewhere, take for 2016/2017 Financial Year, only the English Premier League Clubs directly paid equivalent to 16.6tn Uganda Shillings (over 86% of the Uganda National budget in the same year) in taxes to the British Government.
In the same year, top flight football in the UK paid equivalent to 40.2tn Uganda Shillings (More than twice the Uganda National budget in the same year) in taxes to the British Government.
The FUFA President insists that time for lamenting is over and indicates further that the salient areas of intervention by the Uganda Government to kick-start the professional sports sector are; Funding, Legislation, Infrastructure and Policies.
Funding
He further asserts that Government should finance ALL Teams and Athletes representing Uganda in international competitions.
A National athlete should be identified at the right age from the remotest village, nurtured and developed using the right technical personnel, techniques and equipment. The athlete should be prepared and presented for competitions and should be handsomely rewarded where international excellence for our country is achieved.
There should be well-known documented Government processes and procedures on the funding of identification, development, preparation, presentation and reward of national athletes.

Infrastructure
Just like ICT, Tourism, Oil & Gas, Social, the Professional Sports Sector requires deliberate investment in infrastructure. It is ironical that during the era of amateur sport, Uganda had better infrastructure than now? What happened to Nakivubo, Lugogo, Bugembe, Kakyeka, Barifa, Mbale, and the over 50 Boma Grounds across the country? Namboole Stadium, the only facility in Uganda that can host 50,000 persons is not only out of use to sports activities but in a dire state unacceptable for host international sports.

‘We have a challenge of lack of sports infrastructure in this country. The few that we have are in a dire state. So as leaders, we must present this to Parliament. In recent times, the Government has commissioned new markets almost every city and main town. Why can’t there be commissioning of Stadiums?’ asked Magogo.
Sometimes we actually punch above our weight, competing with countries that are miles ahead of us in infrastructural development yet in the circumstances we operate, we go out and win’ added Magogo.

Legislation:
Eng. Magogo has for long highlighted that the 1964 Sports Act is archaic, obsolete and dangerous. It needs to be replaced urgently with a law that addresses modern day sports challenges.
The current law places Sport in the Education Sector which is the remotest form of modern sport. The new law should define and regulate sports as a multi-sector activity thus;
Body Exercise Form; It is the non-competitive sports activity that is encouraged by the scientists for the proper growth and healthy maintenance of the human body. It is called ‘doilo’. This form of sport is the one covered under physical education in schools and consequently belonging to the Education and Health Sector.
It is therefore important these two particular sectors should regulate and invest in this form of sport for the objectives listed herein. Children in school who undertake sport even make better academic products while a population that exercises reduces on the national healthy expenditure and is more productive for the economy.
Amateur Form; This competitive form of sport that is performed for entertainment and recreational purposes. It is basically built on volunteerism, pride, passion and philanthropy. The participants, organisers and funders do not undertake any activity for the benefit of economic benefit.
It provides a form of mass involvement and entertainment. It is such a good social tool for mobilisation and community cohesion. There is no better way of engaging the youths who more than 70% of the population of Uganda than providing an environment of amateur sport. The Social Sector should heavily invest in Amateur Sport as it is a springboard to the Professional Form.
Professional Form; It is a competitive form of sport that is performed as an economic activity. The performers, organisers and investors basically undertake activities for an economic benefit. It is a fulltime employment platform and a Tax Base. Until about 30 years ago, the entire world was consuming only amateur sport. The Trade Sector should invest heavily in order to harvest the numerous advantages.
Modern sport has challenges that require proper legislation to protect and enhance the business aspect of the industry. Things to do with commercial rights protection, match fixing, betting, doping, corruption and bribery etc have not been exactly and specifically addressed by the current entire Ugandan law.
Policies
The FUFA President indicates that for the Sports industry to grow there must be investment and operation government policies put in place by Government.
To protect textile manufacturers in Uganda, Government imposes a tax on imported textile. For sports, we directly compete with foreign sports with no protection measures put in place.
Pay TVs, Telecoms and betting companies collect a lot of money directly from the limping Uganda sports economy but there are no policies to make sure they reinvest in local Sports despite their huge marketing budgets expended elsewhere.
Where is the 70% local content Government policy on the television aggregators for sports? How can UBC being run on the tax payer’s money be showing the English Premier League but can not invest in local sport?
Why can’t the PPDA Act require any supplier to a public organization financed from the consolidated fund to present a certificate of financing local sports issued by the relevant government of authorities of Sport?
Why are tax holidays and land for development given to investors in the manufacturing sector but not sports?
Too many questions and not many answers.

“I have already written the Private Member’s Bill for Sports and it will be my first intervention as soon as the 11th Parliament opens. We are creating the sports caucus in the 11th Parliament and we shall use all means to lobby and convince the rest of the house. Even if it means undressing, we shall, but the time is now not tomorrow’ concluded Magogo.
Uganda U20 National Team the Hippos has lost to Tanzania in a Mini Tournament match by 5-3 at the Chamazi Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Saturday evening.
It was a more attacking game from both sides as eight goals were registered on the day.
The Tanzanians got early goals from a penalty spot in the 13th minute scored by Abdul Suleiman and doubled their lead three minutes later from Captain Kelvin John.
The Hippos quickly answered back with well taken strikes outside the box from Derrick Kakooza in the 19th minute. Ivan Bogere levelled matters for Hippos in the 25th minute. 4 goals were scored in a space of 12 minutes a true reflection of a fast paced attacking game.

On return from the break for second half action, Abdul Suleiman got another goal for the hosts to reclaim the lead but substitute Sam Ssenyonjo squared the scores in the 73rd minute with a powerful header.
With 15 minutes to time, Kassim Shaban netted the fourth for Tanzania and Abdul Suleiman completed his hattrick with a spot kick in the 90th minute.

Uganda Cubs (U17) National team provisional squad has been named to start preparations ahead of the Total AFCON finals-Morocco due in March 2021.
Forty one (41) players of which two (2) are foreign based have been summoned by Head coach Hamza Lutalo.
The players will report to camp on Tuesday 9th February and begin training the following day at the FUFA Technical Centre Njeru.

Uganda made a double change in the 65th minute. Steven Sserwadda and Joseph Kizza Bukenya were introduced for Najib Yiga and Ivan Bogere respectively.
Bukenya’s impact was felt when hit the cross bar with 13 minutes to play.
Uganda called for another double substitution in the final 10 minutes.
Andrew Kawooya and Samuel Ssenyonjo came on for Isma Mugulusi and Derrick Kakooza respectively.
There were two more changes for Uganda with Alpha Ssali taking over goal scorer Basangwa’s place and Faisal Wabyoona replacing Byaruhanga.
Uganda held onto the slim lead and won the game, a big boost to the technical team.
Both Uganda and Tanzania will represent the CECAFA region at the AFCON U20 finals to be hosted by Mauritania.

As part of AFCON U20 preparations, Uganda will play
Tanzania in a Mini Tournament on Wednesday 3rd February 2021 at Chamazi Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Both teams will represent the CECAFA region at the AFCON U20 finals to be hosted by Mauritania.

He further stated that playing against Tanzania gives him a good picture of how the Hippos can match with other opponents in the Final AFCON
Tournament.
‘We have worked well on our attacking department. We need to practice more on scoring goals as it will help us a lot in the Final Tournament. The game against Tanzania in the Mini Tournament will help us find out how much work has been done in attack. There is no win that comes without scoring. My boys are hunters, they are thirsty for goals and will score. It will be a good test’ said Byekwaso

The Hippos will play two games in the Mini Tournament on 3rd and 6th February before heading to the AFCON U20 Finals in Mauritania on 10th February 2021.

It was another interesting weekend for a number of Ugandan players plying their trade in the diaspora but do you know how they fared? With two crucial AFCON Qualifiers coming up in March this year, many players are out to impress the head coach of Uganda Cranes Johnathan McKinstry.

In South Africa- DStv Premier League, Uganda Cranes number one shot stopper Denis Onyango kept a clean sheet again- his 10th of the season as Champions Mamelodi Sundowns side beat Chippa United 2-0. Ugandan custodian Ismael Watenga was an unused substitute for Chippa United.

Midfielder Moses Waiswa was introduced in the 84th minute as Supersport United played to a 1-1 draw with Swallows.
Meanwhile forward Daniel Isiagi who features for Jomo Cosmos started the match but was substituted deep in the second half. His side lost 2-1 at home against Free State side in the second tier.
In Tanzania, former Vipers SC skipper Taddeo Lwanga played as Simba SC drew goalless with TP Mazembe in the Simba Super Cup. The match had two Uganda Cranes players Lwanga and left full back Joseph Ochaya for TP Mazembe. Simba went on to be crowned champions in a tournament that also had Salim Jamal’s Al Hilal Omdurman. The tournament was organised by Simba SC to prepare for the CAF Champions League Group Stages.

In Ethiopia, midfielder Yassar Mugerwa played the entirety of the match for Sidama Bunna who drew goalless with Giants St. George FC.
In the English Championship, forward Karl Uche Mubiru Ikpeauzi scored for Wycombe Wanderers but he was on the losing side as they fell 7-2 at Brentford. He netted in the 14th minute and was later taken off in the 84th minute.
Midfielder Roy Jayden Onen was an unused substitute as his Reading FC side beat Bournemouth 3-1 at home in the English Championship.
In the English League 2, Uganda Cranes right back Elvis Bwomono started before getting off in the 46th minute as his Southend United side lost 5-1 at Port Vale.
In Burundi, Allan Brian Kizza started and went off deep in the second half while Steven Mugisha was an unused substitute as Le Messanger Ngozi drew 2-2 with Musongati. Defender Joseph Othieno played full time and netted Musongati’s first goal.
In Kenya, goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan was between the posts for AFC Leopards who beat Posta Rangers 3-1 at home.

Peter Lwasa started for Kariobangi Sharks who went on to beat Nairobi City 2-1 on the road. Yusuf Mukisa was not in the host’s match day squad.
Skipper Hashim Sempala played 90 minutes while Rogers Aloro wasn’t in the match day squad as their club Tusker FC side beat Mathare 1-0 at home in the Kenya Premier League.

In the Israel Ligat HA’al, Bayo Fahad and Timothy Awany played the entire match but their club Ashdod FC lost 3-0 to Netanya.
Elsewhere, William Kizito Luwagga had a 90 minute game but his club Hapoel Kfar Saba lost 3-0 at Maccabi Haifa.
In Algeria, Allan Okello played his 10th League game of the season as Paradou AC drew goalless at home with Mlila.
In the Germany Bundesliga 2, right back Herbert Bochorn who plays for Bochum FC saw his side lose 2-1 at home to Karlsruher.
In Egypt, Abdu Lumala was not in the match day squad as his Pyramids FC side drew 1-1 at Ismaily.
Allan Kyambadde also missed the match for El Gouna FC and his side 2-1 to Ceramica Cleo Patra.
Khalid Aucho had a full 90 minutes of action for his legs but his side Misr Le Makasa lost 4-1 to Zamalek.

A journey that started with high hopes ended miserably with Uganda Cranes losing 5-2 on Tuesday night to defending champions Morocco at the Total CHAN 2020 Finals in Cameroon.
The biggest chunk of the Ugandan team was making its debut appearance at the tournament set aside for the local based players on the African Continent. This was one of the contributors to the results but did not stop the players, technical team and FUFA to set targets for the tournament.

The fans back home believed that the moment was ripe for Uganda to get out of the group stages for the first time. The previous four attempts had seen Uganda labour to get results.
The story was about to change on Tuesday night in Douala as Ibrahim Orit handed Uganda Cranes the lead early on in the first half only for his efforts to be cancelled at the stroke of half time with Morocco winning and converting a penalty.
Charles Lukwago made several saves in the game but the final result favored Morocco and Uganda missed the chance to progress.
The story after the break was not pleasant at all as Uganda Cranes conceded four more goals to dash any lingering hopes of qualification from the group stage.

Saidi Kyeyune who scored a spectacular goal against Togo was at it again with a well worked out free-kick in the second half to reduce the deficit for the score to read 4-2 but Morocco hit back with another goal for the match to end 5-2. Ayoub El Kaabi, Soufiane Rahmi(2), Hamza El Houssaoui and Rahmi and substitute Abdelilah Hafidi netted for Morocco.
Morocco and Rwanda qualified from the group as Uganda finished bottom with one point.

‘We cannot complain about preparation, when we set out for this project, we made certain requests to the federation it terms of how we can prepare the team. I think we got 90% of what we asked for which is very good. To be honest that was pleasing.
Aziizi Kayondo is a player in the Uganda U-20 team. He featured in the CHAN tournament playing all 3 games. He will fly to Mauritania for the AFCON U20 tournament due next month.
The intensity of the game in competitions is different from what you get in pre-match tournaments. We were pleased with the progress of the players and they have learnt a lot. They now know that when you get to such tournaments you take your chance. They have gained experience and will be better for the future’

The draws for AFCON U20 were held on Monday afternoon indicating the CECAFA Region Champions placed in Group A alongside the hosts Mauritania, Cameroon, and Mozambique.
However, the head coach, Morley Byekwaso is optimistic and believes his team will progress to the knockout stage.
It’s a strong group with hosts Mauritania and African giants Cameroon. We need to be at our best to overcome all the teams in the Group. We are the Champions of East and Central Africa. We have to compete and represent the region well. We need to be at our best to defeat the best teams and we are confident we shall make it through to the knockout stage. Said Morley Byekwaso.
Uganda Hippos was eliminated by Cameroon in the 2018 AFCON U20 qualifiers on Penalties after both legs had ended in 1-1 aggregate.
Hippos are the Champions of CECAFA Region and this is the first qualification to the AFCON U20 Finals.
Since the beginning of training on Thursday 20th January 2021, there has been stiff competition among players in different positions aggressively working had to make it to the final squad that will travel for the AFCON U20 in Mauritania.
The squad that had 37 players is now reduced to a 30-man squad basically to allow the technical team remains with few players of whom the final 25-man squad will be selected before traveling for the final tournament.
Kiberu Ronald (Synergy FC), Lutalo Umar (Aspire Academy), Kitaka Samuel Moses (Loughborough University-UK), Lotanna Obi Obedi (Big Talent), Mukisa Emmanuel (Kataka FC), Okur Swamadu (Kataka FC), Opio Odong (Luzira FC) have been released from camp.
However, Morley Byekwaso (Head Coach) still believes the dropped players are good and he was impressed by their attitude during training.
‘We have training for over 4 days and we had to reduce the number of players in the squad. All the players we summoned are good but we depended so much on their fitness levels. I’m impressed by the players’ attitude during training. The next two matches for Uganda Cranes at the ongoing Total CHAN Finals 2020 in Cameroon will define the team’s journey at the tournament in Cameroon.
Having drawn goalless with Rwanda in the opening match on Monday, Johnathan McKinstry’s troops will be hoping to treat the matches against Togo and Morocco like Cup Finals.
However the Northern Irishman still has a lot of confidence in his team because they have been putting into practice what they have learnt during training sessions.

‘It is unfortunate that Karisa had to come out early in that game where we had a bright start against Rwanda. He had a good run during the Mini Tournament in Doula. The Medical team has done a wonderful job and will monitor the situation in the next few days. As we welcome back our captain Halid Lwaliwa, it is unfortunate that Karisa will not be available for selection on Friday. The medical team will keep assessing his fitness levels and report back. We shall miss him but it is an opportunity for others to step in and show what they can do’ said McKinstry after Wednesday’s training in Douala.

In the current situation where it is for the rest of the teams in the tournament playing after every three days, we have got to find the balance between the technical and tactical part that you want to do on the field.
Togo plays differently from Rwanda. The boys look confident ahead of the match with Togo. We shall make small adjustments going into this game.

We know both teams provide different challenges and we must get solutions. We know Togo will come into the game looking to improve as well but we feel that we have solutions for the game against Togo. The session on Thursday night will give us a true picture of what we want to do on Friday.

I am back and training well. The decision to select me for the game is in the hands of the coach. However I am fit and ready to play. Our character that brought us to the CAHN Finals is still vibrant and intact. We shall stick to that as a team to get results. We didn’t get what we desired for on Monday but we also know that we must improve.

The coach has kept telling us to play as a team to get the desired result in the next game. We dropped points on the first day but there is room for improvement and that is what we are doing during the training sessions. The senior players will keep guiding the young talent in the squad but they need to remain focused and take every opportunity while at this stage. They need to know the value of being here as it helps the team and players improve every time they are on pitch.

The technical team of Uganda U20 Hippos side headed by Coach Morley Byekwaso has summoned 38 players to begin preparations for the Total AFCON U20 Final tournament in Mauritania running from February 14th – 6th March 2021.
UK based young lads Kitaka Samuel Moses (Loughborough University) and Odokonyero Nathan (Lincoln City) are some of the new faces in the squad.
The players and officials will report for official camping on Wednesday 20th January 2021 and will reside at the Cranes Paradise Hotel in Kisasi.
The squad also has Bobosi Byaruhanga and Abdul Aziizi Kayondo currently on duty with the Uganda Cranes CHAN Team in Cameroon. They will join the squad depending on Uganda’s performance at the tournament. Meanwhile, official training starts on Thursday evening at the Omondi Stadium in Lugogo – Kampala.

Unplanned moments lead to forced decisions for any project in-progress. There were big plans for Head Coach Johnathan McKinstry as he named his starting line up to take on Rwanda in Douala on Monday night at Stade de la Reunification for the Group C encounter of the Total African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2020 Finals in Cameroon.
Little did he know that his main player in the three man attack Milton Karisa would suffer an injury inside 15 minutes of the opening half and even lost him for the rest of the match.
Karisa has been in fine form and McKinstry was left pondering the next move to bring on a player who would still deliver the same job as his injured first choice star. Brian Aheebwa was called in and featured for the entire game.

Tuyisenge Jacques and Hakizimana Muhadjiri caused Uganda Cranes problems but debutant at the tournament Karim Watambala impressed. Tonny Mawejje was brought in for Bright Anukani while Ocen Ben for Viane Sekajugo.
Halid Lwaliwa missed the game with a niggling injury but is expected back for the next match. The medical team did not want to risk using him in a game that was captained by Musitafa Mujuzi.

The first half of the game was really frustrating especially for players and staff. We let ourselves down in the first half. However we moved the ball alot better in the second half and created chances through the buildup play and moving the ball effectively. Most of the players in this team are featuring at CHAN for the first time and may be pressure caught up with them at this stage. There was a case for the team needing more confidence.
It is just a case of removing the fear from the players. We know we can move the ball effectively with that passing moving brand of football that will bring us success. We did not do that today. We have a big game in three days against Togo. The players know that it will be big for our next opponents because Togo lost to Morocco. Our doctors will also assess the fitness of Karisa who suffered an injury early in the game.

We went into the game with expectations of winning it. We never created enough chances but learnt a lot as we move into the next fixture against Togo. I am looking forward to another outing for the team if selected.

‘Every game is important. Every game is massive. If we play to our maximum level, we shall get the results we want. The CHAN tournament is where things can change very quickly. We believe we have players who can cause problems to our opponents in the group. First, let us get 3 points and continue planning for other matches’ said Uganda Cranes Head coach Johnathan McKinstry.

McKinstry will come up against his former employers Rwanda for the first time since leaving the job about 3 years ago. During his period as coach of Amavubi Stars, he enjoyed great success in 2016 when he led hosts Rwanda to the Quarterfinals of CHAN.
‘I have an emotional attachment with Rwanda. I was head coach of Rwanda in 2016. We have one objective-when we play Rwanda-winning will be on our mind. The historical relationship will be put aside. If it is not playing against Uganda, i have always wanted Rwanda to do well. It is a big East African derby’ said McKinstry on his reunion ahead of the Uganda vs Rwanda match on Monday.

‘It is widely known that Uganda hasn’t been able to get out of the group stages of CHAN. To me it is an anomaly with the kind of quality players Uganda produces. We want to be here till the final weekend of CHAN’ Mckinstry noted as he elaborated on why Uganda has not been able to get out of the group stages.
‘We feel we know their strengths. However we are making sure we cover up for that in our training sessions. It is really not about doing anything new but focusing on one or two specific areas of our style of play that will bring maximum benefit to the entire team for good results’ said McKinstry.
‘It is a big derby to start the tournament against Rwanda. Both countries are rivals. It is important for the players to know it is not about three points in the tournament but local bragging rights. Eighteen of the players played for me a couple of years ago. It is an experienced squad and hopefully my knowledge of the squad can get the results everyone at home and here are looking for’ noted McKinstry.

‘We believe the preparations done by the team have mirrored in what we had initially planned even before the camp was cancelled in March. We have achieved 90-95% success with our preparations.
We are continuing to climb the mountain we have set for ourselves as we know if we reach the top of it, we can be successful’ noted McKinstry.

‘I am glad to be here. I am also happy that the team qualified for the CHAN Finals. It has always been a dream for me and the players on the team play in this tournament. I think we can make it from the group stages. I have not watched any matches of Rwanda in action but we know their players from the U20, U23 and other National teams as we have been able to face off in the past against them. This team has been together for long. We believe we can go all the way’
