Many stories are referenced to the old and generation in terms of sports, fashion, entertainment, education, character and style.
The football fans are so fast to make comparisons between what happened then and now. In the 90s and years below, smartness for players was a must implemented by referees. Every player would be required to keep their shirts tucked in at all times during the game.
L-R Rivaldo, Beckham and Pirlo all trademarked their smartness on the pitch by tucking in shirts/Getty Images)
The trend has since changed and FIFA doesn’t include that among the 17 Laws of the Game. It is not a requirement for players to keep their shirts tucked in during matches.
However there are players world over who have kept the tradition going and made sure that they remain ‘smart’ while on the pitch.
Adama Traore of Wolves keeps his shirt tucked in
In Cameroon, as the Uganda Cranes continue with their preparations for the Total CHAN Finals 2020, we bring you left back Eric ‘Smart Man’ Ssenjobe who has kept the tradition going of tucking in the shirt during training and competitive matches.
Eric Ssenjobe all dressed up and shirt tucked in during Uganda Cranes training in Douala
Ssenjobe is a sibling to German based Ugandan musician Fred ‘Toolman’ Kibalama.
Eric Ssenjobe’s elder brother Fred ‘Toolman’ Kibalama is a singer based in Germany but has also ventured into the Health field
‘I respect football so much. It is a job to me and I must be smart all the time. I am not inspired by any one’s smartness while on the pitch but I believe the football pitch is my office and I must give it attention when I get the opportunity to play. Tucking in my shirt gives me all the freedom to be happy at heart even before kick-off’ Ssenjobe told www.fufa.co.ug.
Eric Ssenjobe stands between his teammates at Cranes Bobosi Byaruhanga (L) and Hassan Muhamud (R) before the Uganda vs Zambia match in Yaounde. He is standing akimbo but the shirt still tucked in.
Ssenjobe features for Uganda Premier League side Police FC and he believes his current coach Abdalla Mubiru has played a key role in his development at the Cops.
Ssenjobe wears shirt 17 at his club Police FC. His shirt is visibly still tukced in as he walks out of the dressing room for a league match
‘Coach Abdallah signed me from KCCA FC. I was not having playing time. He knew my abilities on the pitch. He has transformed me a lot and helped change my style of play that has come with a lot of improvement’ noted Ssenjobe who grew up in Kyebando before his parents moved to Kiteezi.
Coach Abdallah Mubiru handles Ssenjobe both at Club and National team
Ssenjobe once played in central defence at KCCA FC partnering Timothy Awany. He surely did not enjoy his stay at Lugogo but he is thankful to the coaches led by Mike Mutebi.
Eric Ssenjobe in a KCCA FC shirt. He played for the Kasairo boys from 2017 to 2019 before moving to Police FC.
‘I was given a great opportunity to play for a big club in Uganda. I thank Coach Mutebi for every chance that he opened up for me to play football while stull at Lugogo. I am now trying out something special at Police FC and Uganda Cranes’ added Ssenjobe. He was at KCCA FC from 2017-2019. Not interesting moments for him but learning process at senior football level.
Ssenjobe is grateful to Coach Mike Mutebi for giving him a chance to play at KCCA FC
Before his journey in senior football, Ssenjobe is all praise for his first coach Abdul Darmon Sseruyange who has seen him through two youth set ups at Aspire Academy in Mulago and Terranova in Bunga.
Coach Abdul Sseruyange is attributed to the early days of Ssenjobe’s playing career at Terranova Academy in Bunga and Kakungulu Memorial Scholl in Kibuli
‘Sseruyange knows my journey very well. He took me to Kakungulu Memorial where he was coach of the coach. It is incomplete without the mention of his name. I would be nothing by now in football had he not held my hand when I started playing the beautiful game. I have a lot of respect for him’ said the left back born in a family of 20 children.

Surprisingly he is the only person playing football in a family headed by his father who is a mechanic and his elder brother Toolman now in Europe.
Eric Ssenjobe is down here after two Zambian players sandwitched him in the game Uganda Cranes won 2-0 in Yaounde. Despite the fall during the match, the shirt remained tucked in.
With his mind now set on helping Uganda Cranes get out of the group stages of the CHAN Finals 2020, expect to enjoy many sights of Ssenjobe with his shirt tucked in while on the pitch.

The ball is in his court as he has already convinced Head Coach Johnathan McKinstry by naming him in the final 25 players for the Cranes Squad at the tournament in Cameroon.
Eric Ssenjobe listeing to Head Coach Johnathan McKinstry during training in Douala. Despiteteh rigorous training sessions, his shirt will remain tucked in always.
‘It is a different ball game in Cameroon. I am learning a lot of new things and helping me to improve. The Head coach demands professionalism from all aspects. It has helped me and my fellow players understand his philosophy about the demands of the team. I am here to make a contribution to the team and also see Cranes get out of the Group stages for the first time’ said Ssenjobe who will be wearing shirt 5 during the tournament.
Eric Ssenjobe and his teammates will be looking forward to getting out of the group stages at the Total CHAN Finals in Cameroon for for the first time.

‘There are several things we have learnt from the Pre CHAN Mini Tournament. First, it was about testing all players by having a good time on the field and getting the final squad for the CHAN Final Tournament itself.

Micho took Uganda back to AFCON Finals after 39 years of waiting in 2016, so there was every reason for emotions and news headlines to be created ahed of the reunion.
FUFA Media caught up with both coaches after the match.
Uganda Cranes Coach Johnathan McKinstry
We are very pleased following our second game here in Cameroon after what was a very positive performance against the host Nation a few days ago with ten men. We decided to basically change everybody in the team.
Orit Ibrahim was one of the ten new faces named in the starting line up against Zambia on Monday
We made ten changes in the starting lineup but maintained one in Tonny Mawejje and that was purely to make sure the midfield had the right balance. We knew before the game that he would come out at halftime and Shafik Kagimu would come in.
Hassan Ssenyonjo came on a substitute in the second half
We knew what substitutes would be made. The players knew what would happen at half time. Overall, I thought that the ten players who came in put up a good performance.
To win 2-0 against a quality Zambia team, I felt we deserved it because we created quality chances in the game.
Uganda Cranes coach Johnathan McKinstry passing on instructions to Mohammad Shaban before comin on against Zambia
There is no doubt Zambia created chances as well but I felt they were more of half-chances compared to ours which were quality chances. When you create good chances you are most probably going to score.
Uganda Cranes substitutes coming on Ben Ocen, Joseph Semujju and Mohammad Shaban
I was pleased with the guys (players). I was pleased with their application.
If anything, I thought this was a more difficult game than the Cameroon game. I thought Zambia created more problems for us compared to the Cameroon game, but that then goes back to players to show their resilience and organization.
We are very pleased as coaching staff. We still have work to do but moving in the right direction.

Old Friends McKinstry and Micho meet before the match at Annex 1 Omnnisports Complex
Uganda used their two chances while my team we hit post four times, not scoring and paid the most expensive prices. Congratulations to Uganda upon winning. It was a match between a tired team and well prepared team.
Life after the match. Professional greetings. Micho and McKinstry on Monday after Uganda beat Zambia 2-0
It has been a match helping both teams to prepare well and we have properly tested, tried and experimented before the official matches in CHAN that will be pure reflection how good we have prepared.
The smallest men on the pitch Vianne Sekajugo and Steven Mukwala proved lethal with the ball as Uganda dominated Zambia to win 2-0 in their second match of the Pre CHAN Mini Tournament at Annex 1-Omnisports- in Yaounde, Cameroon.

Micho took Uganda back to AFCON Finals after 39 years of waiting in 2016, so there was every reason for emotions and news headlines to be created from this moment.
After the match, both coaches Micho (L) and McKinstry (R) exhibited high levles of professionalism and sportsmanship spirit. It ended Uganda 2-0 Zambia
However Sekajugo and Mukwala will still the headlines. The manner in which they scored their goals, especially the latter-would be good for a TV advert.
Vianne Sekajugo taking on his opponent
Sekajugo deployed on the left flank, kept his run simultaneously with Ibrahim Orit who was deadly with the ball from the right wing. Orit, beat his marker with his skill and pace to set up a cross but Zambia keeper Charles Kalumba let the aerial ball though his hands to drop down. Sekajugo coolly collected the ball and had all the time to think about so many options before he handed Uganda the lead.
Mukwala showed skill and attention to detail to score. He teased Kalumba twice before he doubled Uganda’s tally.
It was a dominant performance from Cranes as Captain Halid Lwaliwa, Paul Willa, Eric Senjobe and Hassan Muhammad manned the defence very well.

When we arrived here in Cameroon we exchanged New Year’s messages and X-mas Greetings. We have known each other for several years. I am looking forward to seeing him. But for the 90 minutes of the game we will be trying to do the best for our respective teams. After the match we can share chat of old times. We both have objectives for our teams’

The youngsters of Uganda National football team of U17, the Cubs yet again smeared their name all over here in Rubavu, Rwanda when they crashed determined Ethiopia to a 3-0 loss.
This means Uganda qualifies to next round as as pool A toppers and will face second positioned team in pool B which is Djibouti in this regard.
Of course, Djibouti fought their lungs out to the final whistle to make it to the semi finals as their closest rival Rwanda were in the waiting-mode to learn their feat from of the results between Tanzania and Djibouti a game that ended in a one all draw seeing both of team through.
Uganda faces Djibouti knowing there is nothing like messing up or demeaning their opponent given the stature and the magnitude of the game if they are to qualify for U17 AFCON finals in Morocco next year.
Uganda Cubs XI Vs Ethiopia
They know a win against Djibouti sees them through to the finals and this will give Uganda a thousand reasons to treat this game as a game of their life with utmost attention and care.
Head coach Hamuza Lutalo is never scared though he will approach the opponents with respect but not fear them.
Lutalo disclosed; ‘We qualified with flying performances to semifinals but that alone doesn’t guarantee us a spot in 2021 AFCON finals, no, Djibouti’s game will and therefore its a game of our life and I have told players. We shall approach our opponent with due respect but not fear them. We shall have to attack and attack so as we score goals. Goals will make us qualify, there no other formula to that by the way.’

Uganda has by far been a free scoring team in the ongoing Caf U17 Zonal qualifiers so far netting eight and conceding none in the two group matches they played.
The 5-0 against Kenya and then beating Ethiopia 3-0.
Djibouti though, drew both games 0-0 against Rwanda in their first group game and then a one all draw against Tanzania.
Uganda has a rich stand against their compatriots Djibouti.
In 2018 in AFCON U17 Zonal Qualifiers – CECAFA Zone in Tanzania, Uganda beat Djibouti 8-0 a performance they have to replicate to see the team through to the finals of the tournament.
All eyes will be on sharp shooter Oscar Mawa
The tournament is being used to get the two Cecafa regional representatives who will play in the U17 CAF finals that will be held in Morocco in July next year.
Uganda is looking at making a back-to-back qualification after playing in the past one that was held in Tanzania in 2018.
The Uganda Cranes head coach Johnathan McKinstry has named a provisional team of 28 players to start the preparations for the 2020 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament that will be hosted by Cameroon in 2021.
This cluster of players, with the exception of KCCA players who are traveling to Rwanda for the CAF Confederation Cup is expected to enter residential camp by Sunday, 20th December 2020.
The provisional squad has rookies to the national team set up as Police’s Muhamood Hassan, Uganda U-20 trio of Aziz Kayondo, Ivan Bogere and Bobosi Byaruhanga as well as BUL’s on form forward Joseph Ssemujju.

Uganda U-17 National Team (The Cubs) won their second game at the on-going CECAFA U-17 championships in Rwanda, condemning Ethiopia 3-0 at the Umuganda Stadium in Rubavu on Friday.
Striker Oscar Mawa scored a brace and midfielder Ivan Irinimbabazi added the other as Uganda Cubs triumphed in a game played under heavy rains.
Mawa broke the resilience of the Ethiopians with a 17th minute goal.

This was added by Irinimbabazi’s second with 10 minutes to the climax of the opening stanza.
The Ugandan youngsters thus led 2-0 by the half way mark.
Mawa made it three with another strike after 62 minutes.
This was the second victory for Uganda in a space of three days following the earlier humbling of Kenya 5-0 in the group A opener at the same venue on Wednesday.
Uganda Cubs will take on Djibouti in the semi-finals on Sunday, 20th December 2020.

The two finalists at this year’s championship will qualify for the AFCON finals in 2021 that will be hosted in Morocco.

Having had a perfect start to the tournament after treating our ailing neighbours Kenya to a yummy 5-0 buffet, Uganda Cubs technical staff knows exactly there is a lot at stake for the team to settle for.
A week back upon the team’s arrival to Rwanda and even before kicking a ball, Uganda has been tipped to be the favourite by many to win the tournament basing on various factors laid forth but commandant Hamuza Lutalo says this will not give them self complacency for they to sit back and look on.
He definitely knows, if Uganda lost to Ethiopia in their second group match, Uganda would then finish in position two in group A that comprise of Cubs, Kenya and Ethiopia thus so he risks not to take anything for granted.
‘I know what our second game tomorrow means to us, we shall not take anything for granted.’ Hamuza Lutalo disclosed after today evening training session.
‘Yes, we know we already qualified for semis but we shall treat every game in a special way possible. We have to give it utmost attention and the best shot by parading our best players on the battle front.’ he added.
Uganda Cubs players celebrate one of their five goals against Kenya
In their recent past meeting, Uganda beat Ethiopia 3-1, in the finals of U17 CAF Africa Cup of Nations Zonal qualifiers that were held in Tanzania in 2018.
Should Uganda apply the same tactics and approach like they did in that final game, then they’re rest assured of the number one slot in group A.
However, Uganda should be alert that Ethiopia’s only hope(s) of qualifying to the next stage is into this match and if I employ my mathematics so well, any slim loss (below four goals), a draw or victory for Ethiopia, would guarantee them a visa to semi finals. So they will want to fight till the last whistle, I presume.
Uganda held their pre-match training at Umuganda stadium (outside pitch) by 3pm (4pm Uganda time) for muscle relaxation and recuperation all players were in sober state and available for selection tomorrow apart from clean sheet master goalie Abdu Magada who is nursing a wound but subject to team doctor’s final assessment to determine his feat if he’s to feature in tomorrow’s game.
Uganda Cubs in action against Kenya
Uganda is here on a mission and that is to qualify for U17 CAF Africa Cup of Nations that will be staged in Morocco next year 2021 and they know mere storming finals is enough so they have to over come the hurdles on their path to hit the intended target.

Competition: U17 Total CAF AFCON Zonal Qualifiers
Date: Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at 12:00pm
Host Country: Rwanda
The tournament attracted 6 countries divided into two groups A and B
Group A: Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia
Group B: Rwanda, Tanzania, Djibouti
It has been now almost two months of self denial while camping and staying away from our beloved ones.
Both playing and technical staff on the U17 Uganda National boys soccer team have been undergoing intensive and multiple trainings, either in practical drill form or rather theoretical classes of course plus numerous Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) tests or CT body examinations and whatsoever.
Time for real test to write final examination has come to test who is who and who got it right during real time of preparations.
Assistant coach Brian Ssenyondo talks to the players
FUFA that started her development journey for youth football way back in 2014 has a huge task at hand to complete given the fact that Cubs are the defending champions of this tourney after winning it in Tanzania in 2018 when they beat Ethiopia 3-1 in the finals and 90 percent of the then project (team), the boys graduated to U20 national team (The Uganda Hippos) that recently qualified for 2021 AFCON U20 FINALS in Mauritania.
FUFA’s mission and vision if am to point it out is to be number one football nation in Africa on and off the field of play and this can visibly be seen by the set up put in place by the football governing body ranging from Youth team setup to senior ones for both sexes.
This alone confides a story why “The cubs” should die a little for the nation to register success in Rubavu.

Meeting between the two teams
Yes, In their last meeting in 2018 in the U17 Afcon Zonal qualifiers, Uganda beat Kenya 3-1 on their path to the finals.
Uganda will have to replicate the same magical performance tomorrow Wednesday December 16, if they are to register a good start.
Hamuza Lutalo and team are confident enough the boys will finish the assignment at hand.
Uganda Cubs Head Coach Hamza Lutalo
Lutalo thinks his side got enough preparation time and that he has no excuse as to why they shouldn’t perform pretty well.
‘Kenya played and we watched their game against Ethiopia and if we are to beat them we have to capitalize on their weaknesses that we saw during their first match.’ Head coach Hamuza Lutalo noted.
‘We have played against them on various occasions both in U15 and U17 competitions and we have won all games so the same approach we shall use even tomorrow.’ he added.
Kenya and Ethiopia are in first and second position in group A, respectively while Uganda is yet to play their first game since South Sudan was disqualified by the organizers before kicking a ball.
