    46th Stanbic Uganda Cup cancelled, sponsors confirm clubs will receive prize money

    A few days ago, Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) issued a circular No. circular No.1119 giving an update about the decisions and state of football competitions.

    Among the competitions hinted about was an update about the 46th edition of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.

    FUFA had cancelled the 2019/20 season of the Stanbic Bank Uganda Cup declaring it null and void with no winner due to the continued COVID-19 restrictions on sports.

    A subsequent press conference held at FUFA House in Mengo, Kampala on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 indicated that despite the Cup cancellation, the main sponsors Stanbic Bank will honour its commitment by paying prize monies to clubs that had progressed to the Round of 16 and the Quarter Finals.

    This press conference was attended by the FUFA CEO Edgar Watson, FUFA Executive Committee Member Hamid Juma, FUFA Deputy CEO- Football Decolas Kiiza and the communications director Ahmed Hussein.

    Ogong further recommitted Stanbic Bank’s desire to associate with FUFA and the Stanbic Uganda Cup in particular.

    ‘As an organization, we do believe that football and sports in general is part of the society. We therefore believe in financing businesses and impressions, education and sport. Sport in general has potential to employ millions. The Stanbic Uganda Cup is the oldest football competition in the country as it has had its ups and downs. Because of the Coronavirus pandemic for this edition, the money will be issued to the clubs at the earliest time possible.’ Ogong said.

    Edgar Watson, FUFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) was excited for Stanbic Bank to pay the clubs at such a material time when most clubs have been affectedby the Coronavirus pandemic.

    ‘I wish to extend my appreciation for this gesture from our sponsors Stanbic Uganda. At this time when all clubs are struggling for incomes, we really appreciate for this gesture. We intend to upgrade the Uganda Cup competition with other partners and broadcast live.’ Watson remarked.

    Decolas Kiiza, Deputy CEO – Football confirmed that there will be no winner because of the pandemic, and KCCA was picked by the Executive Committee to represent the country at the 2020 CAF Confederation Cup.

    “The prevailing conditions brought by the COVID-19 pandemic fought the Stanbic Uganda Cup to the cancelled. The decision of KCCA Football Club to represent the country at the CAF Confederation Cup was purely based on the powers granted by the FUFA Executive” Kiiza stated.

    According to FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo, the Federation had hoped to complete the season but due to the continued restrictions on sports, the Federation reluctantly decided to declare the 2019/20 season of the Stanbic Bank Uganda Cup null and void with no winner.

    Prize Money for the Cancelled 2019/20 season will be paid out as follows:

    The 6 teams that qualified for the Quarter Finals will each receive UGX 6 million:

    1. Proline FC

    2. KCCA FC

    3. Kyetume FC

    4. Light SS FC

    5. Kitara FC

    6. Kataka FC

    The 6 teams that were knocked out at the Round of 16 will each receive UGX 3 million:

    1. Kiboga Young FC

    2. Dove FC

    3. Maroons FC

    4. UPDF FC

    5. Tooro Utd FC

    6. Free Stars FC

    And the 4 teams that were yet to play their Round of 16 matches will share the prize money for their ties. Each will receive UGX 1.5 million:

    1. URA vs Wakiso Giants

    2. SC Villa vs Mbarara City

    FUFA Big League, Regional League Playoffs Schedule Confirmed

    The FUFA Competitions Department has released the dates and fixtures of the StarTimes FUFA Big , Regional League and FUFA Women Elite League Playoffs.

    All playoffs will be hosted at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.

    The FUFA Big League Playoffs will kickoff on the 18th– and end on 21st October 2020.

    Four teams; Kitara FC, Kataka FC, Kiboga Young and Ndejje University FC are vying for the final promotion slot to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

    The Regional League playoffs commence on 22nd October till 6th November 2020 with sixteen teams battling for four slots to the Second Tier Legaue (StarTimes FUFA Big League).

    Uganda Cranes climax Dubai training camp with capacity-building session

    Uganda Cranes officially ended their nine days training camp in Dubai with a class session on Monday, 12th October 2020.

    FUFA Executive Committee member Ronnie Kalema, who led the delegation officiated over this session that lasted for one hour session.

    Kalema, also the Uganda Football Referees Association (UFRA) chairman handled this session targeted at capacity-building amongst players and coaches based on important corner stone.

    He stressed the essence of the players and coaches, to prove how valuable they are to the beautiful game.

    The former FIFA Referee promised more support on behalf of FUFA at all costs to ensure they achieve their number one goal that is to become the best team in Africa on and off the pitch.

    ‘Our vision of becoming the number one football nation in Africa on and off the pitch. The world of football has changed dramatically over the last few decades, and every country faces it’s own challenges in coping with these changes. If we want to promote the game in Uganda, we must be ready to meet the needs of our strategy as FUFA. This is the idea behind the Pro Agenda programme that offers such a vast array of different possibilities to enhance the capacity of National team, staff (players and coaches). All internal football stakeholders of FUFA ought to know what’s going on at FUFA so as to have a sense of Belonging & accountable to one another.’ Kalema remarked.

    The team is expected to return back home on Tuesday at 10am with Joseph Ochaya and Jamal Salim who will later connect to their respective clubs while the rest of the foreign based players will fly direct to their clubs from Dubai.

    Scottish based defender Bevis Mugabi and midfielder Allan Kyambadde who is stationed in Egypt have already flown back to their respective clubs.

    The camp is in line with the Cameroon 2022 AFCON tournament qualifiers as well as the 2020 Cameroon CHAN Tournament.

    FUFA Second Training for player intermediaries (Agents)

    In order to streamline the environment of working with intermediaries, Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) has organized the second workshop for this cluster, hitherto the agents.
    Willing personalities for this course have to part with an application fee of shs 250,000 (Two hundred and fifty thousand shillings), payable to the FUFA Account 0060096105476004 (Eco Bank).
    The duration of the application process started on Thursday, 8th October and will end on Friday, 30th October 2020.

    I have on Thursday 8th October 2020 tested positive for Covid -19. 
    I am now in self-isolation from the camp for a period as guided by the health officials for better medication and recovery. 

    While I am away, I will help conduct some sessions with my technical team for the players online as we continue with preparations for the FIFA U17 World cup Qualifier with Cameroon.

    Uganda Cranes contingent from Uganda safely arrives in Dubai

    A 25 man Uganda Cranes contigent including officials safely arrived in Dubai in the wee hours of Thursday ahead of the training camp.

    The contigent left Entebbe international Airport on Wednesday at 10:30pm aboard fly Dubai non stop flight and touched down at the Dubai International Airport at 3:25am.

    Upon arrival at the airport, they all understand went mandatory Covid 19 tests before they were driven to JA Ocean view hotel in Dubai, Jumeirah street.

    They were welcomed by a host of foreign based players like Miya Farouk, Bevis Mugabi and Salim Jamal.

    ‘We have safely arrived in Dubai and everyone is in good mood including all foreign based players we have found here. Now our next step is to embark on the mission that has brought us here as we plan for our AFCON qualification double header against South Sudan.’ Ronnie Kalema, the leader of Delegation remarked.

    This evening at 3pm EAT, head coach Johnathan Mckinstry will hold a brief meeting with the entire team before they conduct their first joint session at 6pm EAT.

    The camp is in line with the 2021 TOTAL AFCON qualifiers as well as the 2021 Cameroon CHAN Tournament.

    96TH FUFA ORDINARY ASSEMBLY – SATURDAY, 17TH OCTOBER 2020

    HOST: KAMPALA REGION FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION (SILVER SPRINGS HOTEL, BUGOLOBI)

    Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) is focused towards holding a successful 96th Annual Ordinary Assembly at Silver Springs Hotel in Bugolobi as hosted by Kampala region.

    Addressing the media at FUFA House in Mengo, Kampala, the FUFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Edgar Watson hinted on the preparations for the AGM, a mandate of the federation constitution in compliance with the National Council of Sports (NCS).

    ‘We are glad to announce that FUFA will hold the 96th Ordinary Assembly at Silver Springs Hotel in Kampala region on Saturday, 17th Saturday 2020 in line with the statures of FUFA. The standard agenda of this Ordinary Assembly is by constitution. The Assembly will held in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures of COVID-19. The delegates already received the Convocation booklets 30 days prior to the Assembly’ Watson, who was flanked by the FUFA Communications Director Ahmed Hussein stated.

    There will be a live stream for the assembly to carter for the people who will follow the proceedings from the confines of their homes.

    The chief guest confirmed for the assembly is the State Minister of Sports Hon. Obua Hamson Denis Obua.

    The invite list also has officials from the National Council of Sports (NCS), Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC), Uganda Premier League Board and the 34 members of FUFA.

    These members of FUFA are the 16 Stare Times Uganda Premier League clubs, Star Times FUFA Big League, the 8 regions of FUFA (Kampala, Buganda, Kitara, Western, North East, Northern, West Nile and Eastern), FUFA Women League as well as the 8 special interest groups (Futsal, Uganda Football Coaches Association, Uganda Football Players Association, Uganda Beach Soccer Association, Uganda Women Football Association, Uganda Youth Football Association,

    The regional chairman will attend, although none has the voting rights during the assembly.

    What is expected at the 96th FUFA Ordinary Assembly:

    • Deliberation on matters for approval of audited financial statements
    • Activity report 2019-2020
    • Budget proposals for the year 2021 will be scrutinized
    • Addition of New members – UPDF, MYDA Football Clubs and a third one will be admitted.
    • Approval of judicial bodies (Competitions disciplinary panel, Appeals Committee, Disciplinary Committee, Electoral Committee)

    CAF releases TOTAL Chan 2020 Dates

    Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) has released the 2020 TOTAL African Nations Championship (CHAN) championship dates.

    Uganda Cranes opens up against Rwanda on 18th January 2021 at the Stade de Unification in Douala in a group C duel.

    This will be followed by a match against Togo on 22nd January 2021 at the same venue and the final group game will be on 26th January 2021 against Morocco.

    FUFA Circular No. 1119: Guidance on Resumption of football activities

    The FUFA Executive Committee made key decisions regarding the following football competitions and events based on the prevailing COVID-19 status.

    In a circular No. 1119, signed by the Deputy CEO – Football Decolas Kiiza Hantali, FUFA issued guidance on resumption of football activities in the country, in particular, the FUFA Competitions.

    1. Star Times Uganda Premier League (1st Division):
    • Kick off of the 2020/2021 season is postponed from Saturday 17th October 2020 to Friday 20th November 2020.
    • The Club Licensing exercise has been extended to 15th October 2020 to enable the process of planning and release of fixtures by Tuesday 20th October 2020.
    • The player registration period is extended by 4 weeks to 19th October 2020.
    • Stanbic Uganda Cup 46th Edition (2019/2020):
    • There will be no further action of the Stanbic Uganda Cup 46th Edition. FUFA and the sponsor will soon announce the sponsorship details.
    • Play offs for season 2019/2020:
    • Play offs for the 2nd Division (FBL) 3rd Division (FRL), and the FUFA Women Elite League (FWEL), will be organised at the FUFA Technical Centre Njeru.
    • Fixtures to be released by the Competitions Directorate.
    • Only players holding licenses for 2019/2020 are eligible for play offs.
    • A player who has expressed interest to transfer or has transferred to another club, such a player shall not be eligible to play in matches involving the two clubs.
    • Other Leagues and Competitions:
    • Club Licensing and player registration will continue to conclusion.
    • The player registration period is extended by 4 weeks to 19th October 2020.
    • Further guidance will be given on fixtures and kick off dates.

    Crown Beverages Limited (CBL) has partnered with FUFA to provide 400 cartons of Nivana water to the Uganda National Women U17 team preparing for the FIFA U17 World cup Qualifier with Cameroon.

    FUFA CEO Edgar Watson receives part of the offer from Nivana Water Brand Manager Ernest Ssentongo at FUFA House on Tuesday. U17 stars Fauzia Najjemba and Juliet Nalukenge also witnessed the handover ceremony.

    The support comes in as a timely boost to the team aiming to qualify for the World Cup Finals due next year in India.

    FUFA CEO, Edgar Watson was delighted by the donation from Nivana and thanked CBL for its continuous support towards Ugandan sports, noting that the company was the first partner of beach soccer when the game was in its infancy stage.

    FUFA holds successful consultative meeting with clubs ahead of play-offs

    Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) held a successful consultative meeting with the different clubs at the new FUFA Complex building in Kampala on Monday, October 5, 2020.

    The FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo chaired the tranquil meeting that was also graced by Darius Mugoye (FUFA second president Darius Mugoye), Decolas Kiiza (FUFA Deputy CEO – Football), Hamid Juma (FUFA Executive Committee member), Hajjati Aisha Nalule (Director FUFA Competitions Director), Ivan Kintu Bayige (FUFA Club licensing manager) and Ahmed Hussein (FUFA Communications Director) among others.

    ‘We thank you for the incredible work you are doing for football. Football clubs are the beginning blocks of football. Without clubs, you can not have football. You are making a contribution to the game of football. We are aware of the challenges everyone is going through because of COVID-19. We are in an abnormal year but football people want to play football but life is very important. It is not a matter of life and death. We must live tomorrow. As football people, we have a responsibility to make. Fair as possible so that we take football to the next level. There is no time and already club licensing is taking place. We received SOP’s from Government and the Ministry of Health that included playing before under closed doors, regular social distancing, masking and sanitizing as well as quarantine of the teams (tournament environment with camping hotel after undertaking COVID-19 tests)’ Eng.     Way forward:

    The different club representatives in attendance shared their respective ideas and by the end of the meeting, it was agreed upon that FUFA would cost share the COVID-19 testing costs with the clubs, meet the accommodation, feeding of the team players and officials as well as provision of medical services for all the teams during the matches.

    The FUFA Competitions Department will release the detailed program and exact dates for the play-offs.

    Full Uganda Cranes Delegation for Dubai Training Camp

    The Uganda Cranes head coach Johnathan McKinstry has released the full delegation of players and officials that depart on Sunday evening for Dubai training camp aboard Emirates Air at 5 PM.

    There are 26 players and 14 officials who depart via Entebbe International Airport for the 10 day’s training camp.

    ‘A number of players were unfortunately ruled out from consideration for the training camp due to Covid-19 travel restrictions applicable to them, or through injury. However the camp presents a great opportunity for a large quota of the foreign based players alongside the best players in the Uganda premier league to prepare for upcoming AFCON and CHAN engagements.’ McKinstry disclosed to www.fufa.co.ug.

    COVID-19 results for the local legion of players and officials returned with negative results for all, making them available to travel with their health certificates.

    The camp has been organized in line with preparations for the 2021 AFCON Qualifiers and the 2020 CHAN Finals to be held in Cameroon next year.

    Update: Midfielder Allan Kateregga joins Dubai bound Uganda Cranes team

    Uganda Cranes midfielder Allan “Dancing Rasta” Kateregga has joined the 13 players who entered residential camp at Cranes Paradise Hotel, Kisaasi – Kampala on Saturday, 3rd October 2020.

    Kateregga joined the camp straight from Iraq where he is based at Ebril Sports Club.

    ‘Allan Kateregga joined us from Iraq where he was first subjected to the COVID-19 tests before traveling. As we await our own results, the team is upbeat before traveling to Dubai’ Abdallah Mubiru, first assistant coach stated.

    On Thursday, 1st October 2020, the 13 players and officials first underwent the COVID-19 testing at the team Hotel and self-isolated for 48 hours before the results will be declared.

    The head coach Johnathan McKinstry will name final team before the team flies out on Sunday afternoon at 5 pm aboard Emirates Airlines.

    The camp has been organized in line with preparations for the 2021 AFCON Qualifiers and the 2020 CHAN Finals to be held in Cameroon next year.

    UFRA rewards former referees, pass annual budget

    Uganda Football Referees Association (UFRA) held their annual general meeting at Hotel La Grande in Bwaise, Kampala on Friday, 2nd October 2020.

    This was the 7th Annual General Meeting (AGM) since 2013.

    The well attended assembly was chaired by the chairman, UFRA Ronnie Kalema and graced by the FUFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Edgar Watson Suubi among other delegates.

    ‘We are pleased that the 7th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Uganda Football Referees Association (UFRA) was held successfully and key issues deliberated upon. We recognized the former referees in appreciation for the work rendered’ Kalema noted.

    In appreciation for the work done over the years, five former referees Charles Masembe, Agena Adupa, Hassan Basiisa, Edirisa Kiwanuka and Ajab Waiswa were rewarded by the Executive.

    ‘I am humbled for the plaque presented to me in appreciation of my work as a football referee since 1983 until 1998 when I retired officially. I have continued to serve in different capacities as an assessor and referees’ instructor.’ Kiwanuka disclosed.

    The AGM approved a total of Shs. 60,500,000 for the next financial year that will cover several sectors as beginners’ courses, members’ subscriptions, COVID-19 relief fund (second instalment), salary of staff, among others

    The Shs.15,000,000 received from FUFA to UFRA as COVID-19 relief fund was also discussed.

    This Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held as a constitution requirement leading to the 96th FUFA Ordinary Assembly that will be hosted by Kampala Region Football Association at Silver Springs Hotel in Bugolobi on Saturday, 17th October 2020.

    Governance: Uganda Women Football Association holds successful 5th AGM

    As a constitutional requirement, the Uganda Women Football  Association (UWFA) held their Annual General Assembly (AGM) at the Red Cross Society Headquarters Lubaga on Friday 2nd October.

    The AGM was presided over by the FUFA third Vice President Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi and FUFA Executive Committee Member  Chrizestom Kalibbala  as well as Uganda Women Football Association chairperson Margaret Fatia Kubingi.

    Decolas Kiiza FUFA deputy CEO -Football ,Swalley Kenyi (the in-charge official for the Member Associations) also attended as well as other Delegates and the media.

    The Assembly was the third in Kubingi’s term as the Uganda Women Football Association chairperson.

    A total budget of one hundred and twenty four million, one hundred and fourteen thousand shillings (124,114,284/=)  was passed (subject to revision by the members).

    Hon. Nakiwala emphasized FUFA’s call to the Uganda Women Football Association becoming professional on and off the field since the federation is one of the Member Associations of FUFA.

    Uganda Cranes enter residential camp prior to Dubai trip

    Uganda Cranes team players have on Thursday entered residential camp at the Cranes Paradise Hotel in Kisasi ahead of the trip to Dubai. The team will fly out this Sunday at 5pm aboard Emirates Airlines for a training camp where they will be joined by the foreign based players.

    Upon arrival, the local based players immediately went in for a brief meeting enlightening on the COVID-19 pandemic that was addressed by National Teams Manager Patrick Ntege before he called on Dr. Apollo Ahimbisibwe to take over the floor.

    While talking to the players, head coach Johnathan McKinstry urged them to be more vigilant and alert about the guidelines governing COVID- 19.

    The 13 players and officials have undergone the COVID-19 testing at the team Hotel. Players and team officials have been asked to self isolate for 48 hours until when they fly out this weekend.

    The camp has been organised in line with preparations for the 2021 AFCON Qualifiers and the 2020 CHAN Finals to be held in Cameroon next year.

    Uganda Cranes head coach Johnathan Mckinstry marks one year at the helm

    Today 30th September 2020, marks exactly one year since Johnathan Mckinstry took over as Uganda Cranes head coach from French man Sebastein Desabre.

    Following a convincing 2019 TOTAL Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Egypt that saw the Uganda Cranes proudly bow out in the round of 16, Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) Executive Committee agreed to have a change in the technical department.

    Fast forward, hundreds of coaches openly expressed interest in the job.

    Northern Irish born coach, a holder of UEFA Pro License Jonathan McKinstry beat a big field and stiff competition to earn the job after resigning from Bangaladesh club Saif FC.

    On Sunday, 13th October 2019, he officially began his tenure on a winning note defeating Ethiopia 0-1 at Bahir Dar Stadium – thanks to a goal by Emmanuel Arnold Okwi.

    The victory away in Ethiopia set a firm foundation as he has won 9 of the 10 matches played thus far, drawing once with no game lost yet with the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup trophy in the pouch as well.

    Out of the ten games, the Uganda Cranes have scored 20 goals with 8 coming in the first half while 12 have come in the second half.

    Two goals have been conceded under his helm against Burundi and Djibouti both in the 2019 CECAFA tournament.

    His biggest highlight so far at the helm is winning the 2019 CECAFA senior challenge cup were the Cranes beat Eritrea 3-0 thanks to Bright Anukani, Mustafa Kizza and Joel Madondo strikes.

    FIFA MA referees online course 2020 commences

    The 2020 FIFA Member Association (MA) Referees online course officially started on Monday at the new FUFA complex in Mengo and it was graced by FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo.

    Unlike the previous years where this fitness and physical course has been held at the FUFA technical centre in Njeru for five days, this time round because of the Covid-19 Pandemic no instructor travelled in due to travel restrictions.

    Zambian instructor Gladys Lengwe and physical instructor Mark Muzengo from Malawi tipped (via zoom) the participants with the latest about refereeing in the football world.

    The FUFA President urged referees to keep themselves in shape and fit no matter the current situation globally as well as being much comfortable using ICT.

    ‘I thank all the referees for coming to this course. Whereas we are aware of the challenge we are having of COVID-19 it doesn’t take away the hope that football will come back and we need referees who are fit physically, mentally and medically. So it’s good that you keep your selves in shape because when we come back it will still be the same like we left as the demands will be the same maybe what will have changed is the the laws of the game in between could have changed and it’s important that since understanding the laws of the game may not require Sops, you can continue improving your selves such that when we come back we don’t have such a challenge. It is also important that as a modern referee you are comfortable using ICT, I remember I used to talk about this before and I think it’s even getting more clear that classes are on zoom so times have changed so it’s important continue improving our selves in such a manner that we are able to keep up with the times. It’s true that at this time of the year usually is when the new referees go onto the international list while some are either maintained or demoted basing on performance, medical fitness and physical fitness and FUFA are supposed to submit a list but the executive have decided to maintain the list and urged those who are aspiring to continue as there hasn’t been any serious competition as further advised by FIFA. ‘ Eng Magogo remarked.

    But when one fails either the medical or physical test then change can be effected.
