Stanbic Uganda Cup: Giant Killers Bugamba ready for another great story after ejecting Onduparaka

Bugamba FC was among several teams that anxiously waited for the results of the draw for the round of 32 in the Stanbic Uganda cup at FUFA House on Monday morning.

The Western region league outfit, was  among the few upcountry teams that pulled off shocks in the elimination round of 64 a couple of weeks ago, when they stunned top flight side Onduparaka FC with a 1-0 home win at Kabatangare grounds in Bugamba village in the newly created Rwampara district.

With this result over Onduparaka FC, they have deservedly been nicknamed ‘Giant Killers’ by their fans.

During the Bugamba FC vs Onduparaka FC match, some fans danced for the entire 90 minutes

Surprisingly, Bugamba FC lies 6th in the 7 team league on the table of Western regional league sub-group of Kigezi, but that did not deter them from putting up a spirited show against fancied Onduparaka FC.

Team coach Salim Twaha seemed a relaxed man before the draws on Monday.

‘We are a small and poor team. We have nothing to show but determination. We shall meet any side whether KCCA FC or SC Villa, but when they give us a home draw, we shall pull yet another surprise because we have never lost at home’ said Salim.

Bugamba FC coach Twaha Salim (L) is congraculated by Onduparaka FC Assistant Coach Morris Adiga after the match which the home side won 1-0.

Bugamba FC will now have to travel several miles for a trip to North East to play Light SS in Soroti.

The battle between Bugamba FC  and Onduparaka FC

Bugamba were joined by other lowly sides like Kajansi FC that eliminated favorites and current Star Times Uganda Premier League table leaders Vipers SC, whose elimination culminated into immediate sacking of head coach Edward Golora. Kajansi United will have to face another strong team- Sc Villa in the round of 32.

The fixture at the bottom indicates Bugamba FC wil travel to face Light SS in the round of 32 in the Stanbic Uganda cup.

Bugamba’s home ground Kabatangare, is 51km away from the Ankole’s traditional stadium Kakyeka and Mbarara City centre, along Mbarara Kabale road, with a natural pavilion created by a hill that overlooks the green grounds that provides the beautiful scenery.

The squad of minors, with a secondary school teacher

Bugamba FC does not have a big name players at least in the entire region of Ankole and Western region as a whole.

Instead the players are a collection of able bodied boys and men, majorly former students of Bugamba SS, including a teacher of English/Literature at the same school Mr. Martin Atwine, who plays in the midfield.

The rest were brought into the team from other villages like Masheruka in Sheema and Mbarara apart from their central defender Paul Opio, who is one of the two players outside Ankole, him with Ronald Ojega.

    Bugamba’s thin Squad

The club relies on handouts from well-wishers, to travel for matches in the regional league and whenever nothing is given out, they don’t honor their away matches, and they have been docked three points and three goals for not honoring two previous games in the league.

Due to financial constraints, the club has only 18 players of whom, 10 are based in Buagamba with the rest coming from Mbarara, thereby making their trainings sometimes not fully attended because of travel expenses to some players.

Excitement of beating a top flight team. Bugamba FC fans couldn’t hide their joy when they defeated Onduparaka FC

Brian Nabaasa-The right full back, recruited from village football in Masheruka in Sheema district.

One of the games I remember in the Uganda Cup is when we faced Express FC at the semifinal sin 1985. We had played against SC Villa at the quarter-final and we won 2-1 where I scored one of the goals. Express was our next opponent in the Semifinal. The game was 3-3 and we won a penalty in the dying minutes. Steven Segujja the Express  FC goalkeeper then ran away from the goal until it was dark  and the game was abandoned. We refused to replay the game & Sports Minister at that time James Rwanyarare intervened. We later agreed to replay the game and  I scored the goal from an assist by the late Hassan Biruma cross. We played Nile FC  in the finals  and I assisted  Davies Kamoga to score the goal. but there was an incident that led Nile FC abandon the match thus we were crowed winners‘ Fred Musisi Kiyingi stated.

    Quotes:

    FATMA SAMOURA:

‘FIFA has been following Uganda’s progress. You have the support of FIFA President. Earlier today, I met with the Speaker of Parliament and discussed the need for an updated sports law to rhyme with the new FIFA regulations. To the sports state minister, the ball is in your court. We want a law compatible to FIFA Statutes that will address the vices as doping, match fixing and the like. We want our football to be a safe place for the children. Thanks very much for everything you are doing.’

    ENG. MOSES MAGOGO

‘I am very delighted to be here today on such an occasion.FIFA has a big dream for Uganda’s football. We shall continue to promote and protect the beautiful game. By strategy, we have opened up a number of relationships with institutions as churches, Kingdoms. I thank Dr Lawrence Mulindwa’ s contribution since 2004 when we started a revolution to improve the image of game back then.’

    EDGAR WATSON

The extended headquarters is a landmark feat registered at FUFA. Under the leadership of Eng. Moses Magogo, we are overwhelmed. We recruited more staff from three to 60 most of them on a permanent basis and others volunteers. Therefore, there was need and demand for wider space. We approached our neighbours through a one gentleman, Musoke to procure the land through FIFA Forward funding. The construction was in two phases; to procure the land, construction and furnishing. We also embarked on the FUFA headquarters parking project and soon, we shall embark on the e-project. Some of the challenges encountered were the bureaucratic nature of the process, the change of the new design and fluctuations in costs which affected the budgets.’

Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa, Honorary FUFA President:

‘Back in 2004, we started a revolution. Yes, revolution indeed. We used our brains. I am very happy that what was started can see the fruits. Keep it up for the work well done and may God bless you. Put these projects to good use and use them for multiplication’

    HAMSON OBUA, STATE SPORTS MINISTER:

One of the sources to local federations is grants from international organizations. I salute FUFA for being able to solicit funds from FIFA and CAF, as well as other sponsors and partners. Let other associations and federations borrow a leaf
