In preparation for the final one of the two final group A match, the Uganda Cranes and Egypt head coaches as well as the player leaders have addressed the media at the Cairo International Stadium during the official pre-match press conferences.

Uganda was ably represented by a three man delegation – Head coach Sebastien Desabre, vice captain Hassan Wasswa Mawanda and the FUFA Communications manager, Ahmed Hussein.

Desabre and Mawanda addressed the keen media and expressed their readiness for the game that will be staged at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday night, kicking off at 10 PM, East African time.

The head coach looked relaxed and disclosed to the media that his charges are ready to face Egypt.

In particular, he cited Uganda Cranes’ gradual improvement over the years as a basis of hope for a better performance against the hosts who will play behind a very big crowd.

In his submission, Mawanda promised to share with the teammates the experience of playing in Egypt and the determination that the players have to seal a round of 16 berth.

The hosts Egypt have already qualified to the round of 16 have secured 6 points from their two victories (2-0 apiece against Zimbabwe and DR Congo).

Uganda Cranes has four points, Zimbabwe (one) and none for DR Congo.

Meanwhile, DR Congo will take on Zimbabwe at the 30th June Stadium, Cairo during the same time as the Uganda – Egypt game.

Sebastien Desabre, Uganda Cranes head coach

    Quotes:

‘This will be like another game. It is a good chance to be here. This is a good opportunity to continue with the work that we started with against DR Congo and Zimbabwe. I know it will be a difficult game for us but we ready to face the challenge.  We shall play to win. We love challenges. The first game with DR Congo was physical. In the second game, it remained as open as possible just like Kenya versus Tanzania which was a typical true African game full of attacking. I am confident about my players tomorrow against Egypt. They are very motivated. It is possible to beat them. We shall give the maximum against Egypt. The team has kept improving step by step’ said Sebastien Desabre.

Hassan Wasswa Mawanda, Vice Captain Uganda Cranes

‘We are not focusing on individual players. We are focused to take on the Egypt team, not individuals. They can also make mistakes. We are concentrating on our last game to qualify to the round of 16. My experience of playing in Egypt will also count for something. I have told my fellow players on how to approach them. We are taking one game at a time and now eyeing the Egypt game. We have had no problems with the weather conditions in Egypt because the team had a training camp in Abu Dhabi. It is a good challenge for us coming to this particular game and we shall give our best’ noted Hassan Wasswa Mawanda.

    Weekly press conference

    Wednesday 26th June 2019

    FUFA House Mengo

FUFA is convinced that club licensing will improve the status of the game if the exercise is taken into account with a warm reception. The club licensing tool took off seriously in Uganda in 2012 with a road map for clubs before every new football season.

Unlike in previous seasons, the process for next season started way back in February 2019 with education and sensitisation seminars. The workshops were organised for top-flight teams (CAF Regional Licensing in April at (Sheraton Hotel).

The FUFA Club Licensing Manager Ivan Kintu Bayige briefed the media about the latest updates on the exercise during the weekly press conference at FUFA House Mengo on Wednesday.

According to Bayige, the strategy aimed at improving on infrastructure that was started this season(2018/19) of a fully green pitch and an internal perimeter fence has been revised to include more three aspects  – well-furnished dressing rooms, full sanitary facilities and physical separation of fans.

Any Club that will fail to meet the five stadium requirements shall not be allowed to play in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League 2019/2020 season.

In a bid to creating enough room for the newly promoted clubs, the FUFA Executive adjusted the deadline for submission of mandatory requirements from 11th June – 22nd June, suitably, a number of clubs have responded fairly well as per the files submitted to the Licensing committee.

FUFA Club Licensing Manager Ivan Kintu Bayige addressing the media during the weekly press conference on Wednesday

Meanwhile, there are few clubs that have struggled to submit the files before the deadline. The committee will meet this Thursday to decide the fate of such clubs and agree on whom to inspect.

SC Villa, Police FC, Kyetume FC, Onduparaka FC, and Tooro United FC have submitted 10% while Vipers SC has not submitted any requirement so far. KCCA FC and Proline FC have submitted the minimum CAF Licensing requirements.

We decided to increase the requirements for infrastructure mainly with the stadium from two minimum requirements to five. A Club that fails to meet the minimum requirements shall not be allowed to play in the 2019/2020 season.’ Said Ivan Bayige

Bayige also confirmed that all players in the Uganda Premier League are required to have intermediaries by the start of the 2019/2020 season.

UPL CEO Bernard Bainamani addressing the media during the Club Licensing Press Conference at FUFA House Mengo

Our Clubs have attended quite a number of workshops concerning Club licensing including that of CAF in April and we also held a Clubs Symposium in May. Clubs should be attending to the process early enough’ Said Uganda Premier League CEO Bernard Bainamani

The process produced fruits for the league and clubs last season as Tooro United, Mbarara City, Nyamityobora and Paidha Black Angles managed to upgrade their stadiums.

    Confirming the latest development on the upcoming course, the FUFA Football Development Director Ali Mwebe said;

‘Goalkeeping is one of the specialised areas of football and our analysis showed that not much efforts have been done in the area with the last FIFA Course in Uganda conducted in July 2016. It isan area of priority this year within our activities and we are pleased that the FUFA Executive Committee gave a green light to this course.

Ali Mwebe –  FUFAFootball Development Director

‘Frank is an ex-professional goalkeeper and an experienced goalkeeping instructor with UEFA ‘A’ Goalkeeping License and has worked with a number of clubs in Europe and Africa. We believe he will add value to our human resource in this area for the benefit of football in Uganda. We have made contact with Frank through our good external network’ Mwebe added

Frank Petersen (51) will be in Uganda starting this Thursday

The FUFA philosophy behind the course is to equip participants (goalkeeper coaches) with current methodology of goalkeeper coaching but more importantly to identify personnel for further development in the area of goalkeeping who will be resourceful in the re-application of knowledge. Further, the course comes in as preparation for future club licensing minimum requirements to coach an Elite side of the game in Uganda.

It is a cost sharing course where participants will pay Two hundred thousand shillings (200,000/=) to cater for meals for the duration of the course while FUFA takes charge of the remaining logistical requirements.
