Sserunkuma: I welcome the Captain’s role, I’m not retiring soon

Sserunkuma’s Goals for the 2016/17 season

    • AUPL-21 goals (Top scorer) playing for KCCA FC (Champions)
    • CAF Club Competitions- 5 goals
    • Uganda Cup-4 goals
    • National Team- 1 goal
    • FUFA Super Cup- 1 goal

He is a reserved player both on and off the pitch. You will hardly hear a word from him even when he scores a goal for his club.

His trademark goal celebrations in the past decade have seen him spreading his hands at his former clubs and the latest style at KCCA FC with his right hand over his head.

The magnificent goal poacher has been handed an armband to captain the Uganda Cranes team vying for a position in the 2018 Total Championship of African Nations (CHAN) to be hosted by neighboring Kenya.

Sserunkuma welcomed the new role handed to him by Uganda Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic. He will be deputized by two players Nico Wadada (Vipers SC) and Bernard Muwanga (Sc Villa Jogoo) who are much junior to him in many aspects like age, caps and experience amassed at international level.

Wadada played his first senior game for Cranes against Comoros in 2016 while Muwanga made his debut during the 2015 CEACAF Senior Challenge cup in Ethiopia.

‘I welcome the role given to me by the coach, his technical team and FUFA. I thank God for this because I have been at the team where younger players came and wore the armband. It is my time now to lead the team but the coach knows why he selected’ said Sserunkuma

‘I will show my excitement on the pitch by scoring more goals for my country’

While speaking to www.fufa.co.ug on the selection of Sserunkuma, the head coach said that the KCCA FC Striker deserves respect from everyone because of his performance and discipline. His maturity, superiority and ability to lead others gave him an edge over the rest of the players in the team.

‘Sserunkuma is like old wine which gets better by age. He has had a superb season scoring more than thirty goals. I have chosen him as the captain because young players can learn from him and can also act as the coach’s extended arm in the field of play’ added the historic Micho who led Uganda Cranes to their first ever Nations cup appearance in 39 years.

The tested and proven goal poacher has scored vital goals for both his club and Country, not forgetting the solitary strike against Cape Verde in Praia and the CAF Champions league against Premeiro Du Agosto of Angola, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, Rivers United of Nigeria and also Al Masry of Egypt.

‘I have no plans of retiring from active football. I will continue playing until my body gets worn out’ said Sserunkuma who scored 32 goals for his club last season.
‘I always make use of my free time to keep fit and relax. Discipline is also key in modern football circles’ added Serunkuma who was named the MVP at his club last season.

The fruitful forward has featured for several clubs in Uganda; Horizon FC, Police FC, Nalubaale FC, Lweza FC and currently with KCCA FC while across borders he has played for St George of Ethiopia Bloemfontein Celtics, Bidvest Wits and Vasco Da Gama all South African clubs.

With 32 goals written to his name this season, the proven finisher seems still hungry for more playing time on the pitch until the body demands no more.

In the latest partnership with the Central Government through the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, FUFA has been tasked to organize a football festival ahead of the 9th Commonwealth Youth Ministers meeting.

The festival is confirmed for Mandela National Stadium on Wednesday, 26th July 2017.

It will be one of the activities for the youth in the build up for this high profile Commonwealth Youth meeting where over 500 guests from the 55 Commonwealth countries are to converge at the Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala between 31st July to 4th August 2017.

This is the first time that Uganda as a country shall be hosting the Commonwealth Youth Ministers meeting and as well, the Common  Wealth Youth Football Festival.

Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi addressing the media at Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development

The development was confirmed by the Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, also the chairperson of Express Football Club during a press conference in the Ministry of Gender and Labour development board room.

    Flanked by Layne Robinson from the Common Wealth Secretariat, Jaya Murthy (UNICEF Communications Director), Lillian Aber (Uganda Youth Council) and a couple of officials from the Ministry of Gender and Social Development, Nakiwala retaliated about the glorious opportunity to work with FUFA;

We are delighted to have FUFA, the guardians of the biggest sport in the world here on board. My involvement in sport at Express FC and elsewhere has shown me that sport is one of the greatest channels of empowering young people.

The tournament we are organizing as part of the 9th Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting will go on annually for four years until Uganda hands over the chairmanship

During the well-attended press conference, FUFA was ably represented by a strong team of four that included the Competitions Director Ali Mwebe, newly elected Uganda Referees’ Association chairman and former FIFA referee Ronnie Kalema and former FIFA referee, Yusuf Awuye.

FUFA pledged to offer all the balls that will be used during the gala, qualified and professional referees as well as ensure smooth organization of the event.

FUFA always looks at improving its external relations.

The partnership will definitely open up opportunities for the football family where a big number of those who love football is mainly composed of youths.

It is also an opportunity for FUFA to continue engaging the Government on supporting sports activities especially football in this case.

The theme of the 9th Commonwealth Youth meeting is ‘Resourcing and Financing Youth Development: Empowering Young People’.

FUFA Communications Manager in a successful brain storming session with USPA members

Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) Head of Communications Ahmed Hussein held a successful interactive brain storming session with members of the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) on Monday.

This was during the Nile Special sponsored monthly assembly which takes place at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala every first Monday of the new month.

Hussein hailed the role played by the media in the dedicated and spirited coverage of sports (football in particular) in Uganda.

He thus appreciated the tasks undertaken by the journalists especially those under the USPA umbrella.

FUFA requires the media for the promotion of the beautiful game in Uganda. We are therefore grateful of the role you are undertaking.

The Federation’s Communications and Media Manager highlighted to the journalists the change in a global trend as regards with undertaking accreditation prior to local and international events.

Journalists are required to follow the accreditation guidelines so that they get passes and cards to cover matches without any hustle.

It is a trend that we have to positively embrace since it also helps in planning and accessing areas which allow media to execute their work.

He also highlighted on the do’s and don’ts for the reporters in the coverage of events and football matches in particular before, during and for post match press conferences.

‘From the training sessions to matches, the media should give respect to the specific regulations set by event organisers. Sometimes there are special rules that guide on the coverage of closed door training sessions and official trainings as designed by the teams; the former USPA General Secretary, who also remains an active member of the history laden sports journalists body added.

The media personalities positively interacted with the Communications Manager, many praising the internal order the FUFA Communications Department has set up before international matches, FUFA events and some posing scenarios that could be improved for the better.

‘With the FUFA General Assembly in Masindi and 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifier Russia against Egypt at Namboole stadium coming up in August,  accreditation will be a key element for both high profile events’ added Hussein.
