UEFA Expert completes Grass testing, examining of 17 Stadiums in Uganda

UEFA Pitch Management and Maintenance expert Philip Fifield has completed the process of grass testing and examining soils of 17 selected football Stadiums across the country on Tuesday evening.

The process is under the UEFA Assist Project and officially began on Saturday 15th February 2020 with two stadiums inspected in the West Nile district of Arua at Green Light Stadium and Arua Hills.

On Sunday 16th February, the process crossed over to the Eastern Uganda town of Jinja. Groundsmen for Four (4) Stadiums (Kyabazinga, Kakindu, The Mighty Arena and FUFA Technical Centre) were available to receive the expertise from Fifield as he was examining the pitches.

Switching focus to the central business district of Kampala, the process resumed with visits of Mandela National Stadium Namboole on Monday Morning. The technical work took Fifield an hour to examine the hardness and softness of the ground, the moisture of the soil, the effectiveness of the drainage system, among others.

On the same day, Fifield visited Luzira Maroons stadium, StarTimes Stadium Lugogo, and St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende where he examined and tested the artificial turf for Lugogo and Kitende pitches together with the Groundsmen for the respective stadiums.

During the final day of inspection, the UEFA expert traveled to the Western Uganda City of Mbarara on Tuesday where he had a successful testing and examining process for Kakyeka Stadium before winding the program with a thorough process on the soil and natural grass of Masaka recreation ground in Masaka Town.

While making his observation after the testing and examining of the 16 stadiums, UEFA expert Fifield admitted the challenge of most pitches struggling to have good grass cover throughout the pitch.

‘We have noticed a lot of work that should be done on the pitches to ensure that they have good grass coverage throughout the pitch and to guarantee that the playing surface is as safe as possible. It is a big challenge during the dry spells. Only the pitches that have the application of black soils prior to the pitch have managed to retain the moisture for the grasses to survive together with those that have a good drainage system like the National Stadium’ said UEFA expert Fifield.

On the other hand, FUFA Club Licensing Manager Ivan Kintu Bayige believes that the process has unleashed most of the encounters that lead to the failure to have good grass cover for pitches in the country.

‘This program was intended to identify what is exactly on our grounds in terms of soils and grass in order to find solutions to the problems of our pitches. Among the 17 Grounds, we noticed there is a challenge of proper drainage system, the mixture of different grass types at the pitch and maintenance of the soils however a lot has been identified by the UEFA expert and the grounds will use it as solutions to the challenges of managing and maintaining pitches’ said Ivan Kintu

  • Interview with Uganda Cranes coach McKinstry after CHAN 2020 Draw

Interview with Uganda Cranes coach McKinstry after CHAN 2020 Draw

Uganda Cranes head coach Johnathan McKinstry is confident Uganda will perform better than the previous Total CHAN tournaments participated in.

In an exclusive interview with www.fufa.co.ug moments after the draw held in Cameroon, McKinstry hinted on the exceptional pool of talent in Uganda, the work ethics and belief of the players.

Uganda Cranes was drawn in group C alongside defending champions Morocco, neighbors Rwanda and debutants Togo.

    Here is the detailed  interview:

FUFA Media: What is your general assessment of group C at Total Chan 2020?

Johnathan McKinstry: Overall, it is an interesting group to be drawn in. There is a lot of different types of football that we to play. It is a proper Pan- African group that has a West African opponent, North African opponent and an East African opponent. The styles of football for all the opponents are obviously different. We know on our preparations that we have to be ready for those different types of football on every given match day. Overall, we feel that we have all it takes to progress. Togo will be making their debut, it will be something new to them as they are slightly inexperienced but equally they have an experienced coach in Claude Le Roy. The players might be inexperienced but a coach who has spent more than 20 years on the African continent, he can build up the team. I know Rwanda very well and a lot of the players I gave the debut are still part of the team. We look forward to that. For Morocco, it will be a different test all together.

FUFA Media: What is your general assessment of all the groups at the Total Chan Tournament?

Johnathan McKinstry: The good thing about the Chan tournament is that it changes in every competition. The nature of Chan is that if a team is successful, like Morocco a number of players are seek greener pastures in foreign leagues and therefore had to predict. Well, you might add a few pieces to the puzzle. It is all about preparation and planning. We believe that we can qualify. All teams start the tournament believing that they will reach the knock out stage.

FUFA Media: How do you rate the chances of Morocco as defending champions?

Johnathan McKinstry: Morocco is good with a strong domestic league. We have a few Ugandan players playing in that league. They are a very competitive team and we know what Moroccoan players bring to the field. Nonetheless, We are ready for them. We all know Uganda versus North Africa in recent years. Morocco is the final group game, we need to first win the first two games for a good positive start against Rwanda and Togo before facing Morocco in the final game.

FUFA Media: How far do you think Uganda will go in the tournament?

Johnathan McKinstry: We go to the tournament very confident. We believe we can qualify for the quarter finals and make it beyond.

FUFA Media: The team lost some important players like Joel Madondo and Allan Okello who left for professional football. How are you copying with that?

Johnathan McKinstry: Both Allan and Joel are talented players and that is why they have ultimately been given an opportunity to move on. In line with the purpose of CHAN, the players were to be given expose to play professional football. We have a lot of talent in Uganda, I have said that before. Look at how we rotated the team at the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup. Yes, there is no another Allan Okello or Joel Madondo in the league but equally there are other players ready to step up and take the chance.

Johnathan McKinstry during the interview with the FUFA Website

FUFA Media: Uganda has a derby with Rwanda. How prepared are you for this contest?

Johnathan McKinstry: There is no team in Africa that I know better than Rwanda. Many players (in senior team or CHAN team) not not played for me but I gave them their senior debuts. There is some old friendship, but for 90 minutes, there will be rivalry. I believe we have enough quality and all it takes to take maximum points not only against Rwanda but also against Morocco.

FUFA Media: Who is the biggest threat in the group?

Johnathan McKinstry: Surely, I think our biggest threat to us is ourselves. We have got to make sure that we perform. There is more than enough talent in Uganda, the team ethic and work rate and we have shown that already is that that level that we can progress. We need to go out and put a 10 out of 10 performance not only in matches but during training sessions.

FUFA Media: How are you preparing the team for the Total CHAN 2020 Championship?

Johnathan McKinstry: When you look at Uganda’s performance at Chan over the years, this has been one of the disappointments for Uganda’s football because the StarTimes Uganda Premier League is very competitive league. Every year, there are close to 7 to 9 players get the opportunity to move outside Uganda. This alone shows you that the clubs in the UPL are doing something right to produce and develop the good talented players. But, this has not been reflected in the Chan performances. One of the reasons might be that in previous years, the players who qualified the team for Chan leave before the main finals. This time, we have prepared well. One of the reasons we played CECAFA was to prepare the Chan team. When we played CECAFA in December 2018, we have lost Joel and Allan but the rest of the team remains intact. One of our concerns in the transfer window was that what happens when we lose 5 to 6 players. We have lost two. We have the talent deep as we go to the tournament, we just need to perform when we get into the matches. We are into a good position to advance to the quarter finals.

Uganda Cranes players in a warm down session at Lugogo on the eve of the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup tournament

FUFA Media: What is that special synergy between the Chan players and the fans?

Johnathan McKinstry: Chan is a great tournament but sometimes when it comes to AFCON when players are playing in Europe or America, the supporters may don’t not get to see them so often. But with the Chan players, the fans get to see them so often every week whether you are a fan of SC Villa, URA, Vipers, URA. These are the guys you see when you turn up at Namboole, Lugogo or Kitende when they play for your home town team. When they put on the colours of the Uganda Cranes, it really is your player, your brother, your neighbor, your cousin playing for Uganda.

We gonna be playing a couple of friendly matches here in Kampala (full programme will be released) late in March. Come out and support the team. Send them to Cameroon with that positive energy. Come and support the team. Show them that they are not playing for themselves, but for the country at large, their friends and families.

Uganda Cranes players lift head coach Johnathan McKinstry after lifting the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in 2019

FUFA Media: When is the  team being summoned and any hint about the preparations?

Johnathan Mckinstry:  A group of 45 players are under close supervision. All of them are aware of that and given personal training for stamina, power and endurance on top of their club training regime. In the final week of February 2020, we shall be announcing the provisional group of 32 players. We shall start the camp on March 2nd 2020.

FIFA Secretary General Samoura thanks FUFA warm reception, lauds federation for developing football

Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) Secretary General Fatma Samba Diouf Samoura has thanked FUFA for the warm reception she was accorded while on her visit to Uganda.

Samoura was in Uganda a fortnight ago on an official visit that saw her engage in a number of football related activities including inaugurating the new FUFA Headquarter extension.

The FIFA Secretary General lauded FUFA for the hospitality and praised the federation for a commitment towards the development of football in Uganda.

‘I have now returned home with a host of unforgettable memories. On behalf of the entire FIFA delegation, I would like to thank you, wholeheartedly for affording us such a cordial welcome and warm hospitality on the occasion of the inauguration of the FUFA Headquarter extension. It was an honour for me to attend the opening of the new offices and I would like to express my congratulations to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations for this wonderful building which will no doubt contribute, with the continuous support of FIFA, to the further development of football and its infrastructure in Uganda and Africa.‘ Samoura remarked.

The new FUFA headquarter extension houses a number of offices and was fully funded by FIFA through the FIFA Forward Programme(FFP).

    FUFA Headquarters extension

The new offices are just adjacent to the old building located on plot 879, Wakaliga Road-Mengo which was built under the FIFA Goal I project during the reign of Denis Obua (RIP) in 2003.

Samoura believes FUFA shares the same vision of developing the game of football like FIFA and heaped praise on the federation for the several projects.

It was also a great privilege to visit the construction site of the Kadiba project in Mengo, a historical playground for many talents and the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru, a complex that may serve as an example and will contribute to the growth of football in Uganda. FUFA Exco Member Issa Magoola making his remarks during the official opening

FUFA has done a lot to develop women football through capacity building. It’s a big opportunity for you to become coaches. You must work hard and put in place whatever you have been taught by the instructors theoretically and practically. Said Magoola

The 24 Participants taking part in the course are former players and a few active players from numerous women football clubs.

According to the current coaching status in the Women Super League, only one Lady serves as a head coach, a statistic that FUFA strategically works around the clock to overturn in the near feature with quality women coaches graduating through the ranks of women football capacity building.

FUFA Football Development Director Ali Mwebe talking to participants

‘FUFA is planning to have more women coaching football in the country. It can only be succeeded through such grass-root football coaching courses. There is only one woman working as a head coach in the FUFA Super League however we want to overcome the challenge with more quality women coaches that can break through and coach at the top level.’ Said FUFA Football Director Ali Mwebe.

On the other hand, UEFA expert Hesterine confirmed that the course will provide good coaches for grassroot football in Uganda and applauded FUFA and UEFA for coming up with such a workshop that will develop coaches in women football.

    UEFA expert Hesterine De Reus

This course is vital for grassroot football and will produce good women coaches. It was a big step taken by UEFA and FUFA to come up with such a workshop. With the aims of the course, women football in Uganda will soon achieve the best from these coaches.’ Said Hesterine.

Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC continued with their perfect start to the season after overcoming Kampala Queens on Sunday in Kabojja.

A closely contested affair that pitted two national team coaches in Faridah Bulega (Crested Cranes head coach) and Ayub Khalifa (Uganda U-17 Women’s national team) saw the latter edge the affair.

Despite Kawempe Muslim missing striker Juliet Nalukenge through injury, the Warriors fought hard to win 1-0 thanks to Anita Namata’s second half strike.

The diminutive winger capitalised on poor marking by Kampala Queens’ defenders to slot past onrushing goalkeeper Lydia Adubango.

Fauzia Najjemba nearly salvaged a point for Kampala Queens at the death of the clock when she jumped high and directed a powerful header on target but Kawempe had defender Samalie Nakachwa to thank for a goal-line clearance.

The result meant Kawempe Muslim moved top of the table on 15 points in five games and they remain the only team yet to concede a goal this season.

Elsewhere, Lady Doves who went into the weekend on top of the table on 13 points were condemned to their first loss this season, falling to Uganda Martyrs in the game played at St. Gerald’s stadium in Lubaga.

Budding striker Latifa Nakasi who is playing in the top tier league for the first time netted a second half brace to take her goal tally to four this season.

Lady Doves who play Kawempe Muslim next dropped to second place while Uganda Martyrs on the other hand moved to third place on 10 points.

She Corporate suffered a 2-0 loss to Olila High School in Soroti district on Sunday. This was the first win for Olila who had lost all the previous four games.

Ceclia Apiding and Siporosa Amoding scored a goal each to guide Olila to victory.

The game between UCU Lady Cardinals and Muteesa I Royal University was not played with the latter failing to avail licensed players.

This is the third game that Muteesa have failed to play this season.

The FUFA Competitions Department will make a ruling on the matter, bearing in mind that if a team misses three games, they are demoted to the lower divisions.

  • Stanbic Uganda Cup: Giant Killers Bugamba ready for another great story after ejecting Onduparaka

Stanbic Uganda Cup: Giant Killers Bugamba ready for another great story after ejecting Onduparaka

Bugamba FC was among several teams that anxiously waited for the results of the draw for the round of 32 in the Stanbic Uganda cup at FUFA House on Monday morning.

The Western region league outfit, was  among the few upcountry teams that pulled off shocks in the elimination round of 64 a couple of weeks ago, when they stunned top flight side Onduparaka FC with a 1-0 home win at Kabatangare grounds in Bugamba village in the newly created Rwampara district.

With this result over Onduparaka FC, they have deservedly been nicknamed ‘Giant Killers’ by their fans.

During the Bugamba FC vs Onduparaka FC match, some fans danced for the entire 90 minutes

Surprisingly, Bugamba FC lies 6th in the 7 team league on the table of Western regional league sub-group of Kigezi, but that did not deter them from putting up a spirited show against fancied Onduparaka FC.

Team coach Salim Twaha seemed a relaxed man before the draws on Monday.

‘We are a small and poor team. We have nothing to show but determination. We shall meet any side whether KCCA FC or SC Villa, but when they give us a home draw, we shall pull yet another surprise because we have never lost at home’ said Salim.

Bugamba FC coach Twaha Salim (L) is congraculated by Onduparaka FC Assistant Coach Morris Adiga after the match which the home side won 1-0.

Bugamba FC will now have to travel several miles for a trip to North East to play Light SS in Soroti.

The battle between Bugamba FC  and Onduparaka FC

Bugamba were joined by other lowly sides like Kajansi FC that eliminated favorites and current Star Times Uganda Premier League table leaders Vipers SC, whose elimination culminated into immediate sacking of head coach Edward Golora. Kajansi United will have to face another strong team- Sc Villa in the round of 32.

The fixture at the bottom indicates Bugamba FC wil travel to face Light SS in the round of 32 in the Stanbic Uganda cup.

Bugamba’s home ground Kabatangare, is 51km away from the Ankole’s traditional stadium Kakyeka and Mbarara City centre, along Mbarara Kabale road, with a natural pavilion created by a hill that overlooks the green grounds that provides the beautiful scenery.

The squad of minors, with a secondary school teacher

Bugamba FC does not have a big name players at least in the entire region of Ankole and Western region as a whole.

Instead the players are a collection of able bodied boys and men, majorly former students of Bugamba SS, including a teacher of English/Literature at the same school Mr. Martin Atwine, who plays in the midfield.

The rest were brought into the team from other villages like Masheruka in Sheema and Mbarara apart from their central defender Paul Opio, who is one of the two players outside Ankole, him with Ronald Ojega.

    Bugamba’s thin Squad

The club relies on handouts from well-wishers, to travel for matches in the regional league and whenever nothing is given out, they don’t honor their away matches, and they have been docked three points and three goals for not honoring two previous games in the league.

Due to financial constraints, the club has only 18 players of whom, 10 are based in Buagamba with the rest coming from Mbarara, thereby making their trainings sometimes not fully attended because of travel expenses to some players.
