Vipers Clinch StarTimes Uganda Premier League Title on Thrilling Final Day

Saturday May 27th, 2023, marked the highly anticipated final day of the 2022/23 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season, and it certainly delivered on its promise of excitement and unpredictability.

The day witnessed a series of astonishing outcomes, with the team in first place ending up in third, while the second-placed team managed to secure the coveted top spot.

A total of 11 goals were scored across three matches, ultimately determining the league’s champion and providing a fitting finale to the season.

Adding to the thrill of the occasion, a helicopter made a grand entrance at St Mary’s Stadium to deliver the coveted trophy. Given the various permutations on the final day, including Lugogo and Wankulukuku as potential venues, the destination of the trophy remained uncertain until the last moment.

Villa, entering the final match with the requirement of a victory against URA to secure the championship, faced a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat at home against the Tax Collectors, thus dashing their hopes of claiming the title.

In the end, Vipers showcased their dominance by overpowering Busoga United with an impressive 5-0 victory, securing the top position and becoming the champions of the league.

Victory by Vipers SC marked a significant milestone for the team as it was their first successful defense of the league title, making it their sixth championship win. On the other hand, Villa, who were on the verge of ending their 19-year wait for a league title, experienced a dramatic downfall, slipping from first place to third, finishing just one point behind Vipers and KCCA. Notably, Villa’s dream was ended by coach Sam Timbe, the same individual who led Villa to their last league triumph in 2004.

Meanwhile, at Lugogo, young talent Rogers Mato stole the spotlight, delivering an outstanding performance for KCCA FC. Mato scored an impressive four goals, finding the back of the net in the 48th, 61st, 88th, and 94th minutes, with his fourth goal coming from the penalty spot. Charles Lwanga also contributed to the thumping victory with a goal of his own.

Vipers and KCCA finished level on 53 points, but Vipers’ superior goal difference ultimately gave them the edge.

In another match, relegated Blacks Power emerged victorious with a 3-1 win over Express, courtesy of goals from Daniel Otim, Dickens Okwi, and Robert Eseru. Allan Kayiwa scored Express’ consolation goal, securing his position as the season’s top scorer with 13 goals, one more than Villa’s Charles Bbaale.

Elsewhere, Arua Hill triumphed over Wakiso Giants with a lone goal from Innocent Media, while relegated Onduparaka showcased their prowess with a convincing 4-1 win over UPDF on the soldiers’ home turf in Bombo. Gasper Adriko, Rogers Okumu, Dominic Abonga, and Boy Fazilino all found the back of the net for Onduparaka, while Jibril Nsimbe scored UPDF’s consolation goal.

Nile Special Unveils Cranes Kabbo Campaign Proceeds, Open Public Voting for Fund Allocation

Nile Special has announced the successful conclusion of the Cranes Kabbo unveiling UGX 450M proceeds from the campaign. Launched on November 18 – December 20, 2022, the drive aimed at rallying support for the Uganda Cranes national football team in its quest to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America.

The Cranes Kabbo fund will be invested in one of three proposed areas, each of which holds immense importance for the development of Ugandan football:

    • Improvement of the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru
    • Development of a new Nile Special Training Centre
    • High-level coaches’ development training abroad

To ensure transparency and participation in the decision-making process, Nile Special has opened a poll on its Twitter page encouraging Ugandans to vote for their preferred project that will receive the Kabbo fund.

The voting period commences today and closes on Friday, May 26, 2023. This will be followed by the digital reveal of the poll results and the project chosen for the fund allocation will be unveiled.

The Nile Special brand manager, Joel Galla, expressed his satisfaction with the success of the Cranes Kabbo campaign, stating that; “We are thrilled with the overwhelming support and participation we received from all Ugandans throughout the campaign. The funds raised reflect the collective spirit of the nation and highlight the pride Ugandans have in their national team. We are confident that the funds collected will make a significant impact in advancing Ugandan football and the Cranes in particular.”

The FUFA CEO Edgar Watson while representing the Federation at the event appreciated the partnership with Nile Special.

He remarked, “Nile Special is a special partner to FUFA and I think this occasion testifies that FUFA was right and we want to thank you so much. This is very good for us and for FUFA and all stakeholders in football”

“The kabbo, which is in my own interpretation, something that is still small has generated quite a sum of UGX 450M, then I think Nile Special is indeed special and has rightly engaged football lovers in the Country. And the special around this is that people are directly engaged. I only see this relationship and this kind of campaign and many more coming in to solve the issue of how football is developed in this Country.” the FUFA CEO added.

The Cranes Kabbo campaign derived its name from the virtue of Ugandan society, which emphasizes communal support and unity when called upon for a worthy cause. Nile Special firmly believed that national causes hardly get any bigger than supporting the Uganda Cranes in their quest for FIFA World Cup qualification. To encourage participation, Nile Breweries devised a simple mechanism: for every Nile Special beer purchased, 50/= was added to the Cranes fund. This allowed Ugandans to contribute directly to the ambitious goal of seeing the Cranes qualify for the prestigious tournament.

  • FUFA’s head of Technical development attends FIFA’s leadership diploma in Brazil

FUFA’s head of Technical development attends FIFA’s leadership diploma in Brazil

Federation of Uganda Football Associations, Director of Football Development Ali Mwebe has been selected as one of 25 participants in FIFA’s prestigious new Technical Leadership Diploma launched in Brazil this week.

He joined other selected Technical Leaders from Member Associations and Confederations from around the globe at the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) Training Complex in Rio de Janeiro for block one of the 18-month-long course.

The FIFA Technical Leadership Diploma aims to become the ‘globally recognised qualification’ for Technical Leaders working in the game and will prepare participants for the distinct challenges and opportunities faced by a Technical Leader within a Member Association.

Five core domain areas to be covered include Technical Leadership, High Performance, Coach Education, Amateur Football and Management.

“Being selected by FIFA among the 25 pioneer technical leaders all over the world for this course is second to no other lifetime opportunity in football, the course structure and delivery are so unique, very practical and reality-based concerning day-to-day challenges in the job. Global football development is currently very dynamic and no doubt a course of this nature is preparing us to be on top of our abilities to catch up. It’s so exciting starting this 18-month-long learning journey from the legendary football nation Brazil.”

    Ali Mwebe

The FUFA CEO, Edgar Watson said that the new development positions FUFA on a progressive track.

“Ali Mwebe being among the selected participants in this unique new course, will position FUFA and Uganda on a progressive track in which our technical challenges will be addressed. As our internal policy, Mwebe will be required to orient the direct stakeholders on the new reality-based technical trends and development trails. We appreciate FIFA for having selected our own Technical Director for Uganda to benefit,” says Edgar Watson, FUFA Chief Executive Officer

The FIFA Head of Global Football Development Steven Martens highlighted the importance of a Technical Leader to the future of the game.

“We are delighted to welcome Ali Mwebe onto our new Technical Leadership Diploma. The role of the Technical Leader is crucial to the future of football and one we believe should have greater recognition,” says Steven Martens, FIFA Director of Global Football Development.

“Over the last few years, FIFA has been working closely with Member Associations to develop a number of programmes, such as the Talent Development Scheme (TDS). The successful implementation of these programmes relies on the leadership of Technical Leaders. So, naturally, we want to support, develop and work alongside Technical Leaders to help them become the very best they can be and, as a result, help develop the game,” added Martens.

‘Globally recognised qualification’ for Technical Leaders

The FIFA Technical Leadership Diploma is the first qualification of its kind and aims to become the ‘globally recognised qualification’ for Technical Leaders working in the game.

“Currently, there is no single award or accreditation that allows an individual to become a Technical Leader in a Member Association,” explains Jamie Houchen, FIFA’s Head of Technical Leadership.

“If a Member Association is looking to hire a Technical Leader, there is no benchmark for quality. We believe the FIFA Technical Leadership Diploma will become the globally recognised qualification for Technical Leaders and produce the very highest quality of graduates to lead football around the world.”

Following the six-day workshop in Brazil, the 25 participants will begin their own personal project focused on their unique context and following a programme of online learning. The cohort will meet again for six days in Japan in December with two further face-to-face events to follow.

For more information about the FIFA Technical Leadership Diploma visit the FIFA Training Centre, www.fifatrainingcentre.com

    FUFA TV Cup Launched

Today Monday 15th May 2023, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has launched an annual school football tournament known as FUFA Tv Cup, that will earmark the traditional secondary schools’ institutions in Uganda as the participants with its inaugural theme that states “EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMICS AND SPORTS”.

We believe we can achieve this by collaborating with schools because they have the students, nice pitches, teachers among other.” FUFA President remarked after the meeting.

Having worked in many countries across the African continent I have realized many football associations have a challenge with governance issues and yet here you are giving it a lot of focus.” Harris Internation MD, Simon Harvey.

‘I also want to commend your diversity plus inclusiveness. Football is called the beautiful game not because of the fancy and exciting European football but because it is played by the local boy or a father in the middle of the Ugandan area. FUFA’s target of extending football to all homesteads really matches with that.’ He added.

‘With this new of injection of ‘Rock Boom’ – feel the positive energy, we needed this kind of energy into this competition. As FUFA we stand for giving value to our sponsors/partners to ensure that the different entities; FUFA, the game of football and in this case Harris international through Rock Boom get value. Each of these brands have goals that we are going to work together to ensure that they are achieved.’

Patrick Mugyenyi, Harris International Deputy Managing Director in his remarks expressed excitement for the two brands working together.
‘We are just excited to be able to partner with FUFA to bring life and a new experience in the most loved sport in the world. I think its been long overdue but now we are here to deal with you to create the most unique experiences.’
