  • CAF Media Seminar: Media is the window of African Football

CAF Media Seminar: Media is the window of African Football

CAF Media seminar at Mbankomo Centre of Excellence in Yaoundé, Cameroon
    8th-12th December, 2014

Communication is a key area in any institution. Break down of any system in this area leads to wrong information being traded in the public which later affects the institution.

Both Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) rate communication highly- the more reason they have come up with media seminars this year in Tanzania and Cameroon for their Member Associations.

The seminar in Yaoundé has brought together all National Football Association communication managers on the African continent except Kenya, Morocco, Niger, Liberia, Libya, Djibouti, and Cape Verde who missed due to various reasons.

East African Cooperation Ahmed Hussein Uganda, Boniface Wanbura-Tanzania and Rwanda's Bonnie Mugabe.

East African Cooperation: Ahmed Hussein Uganda, Boniface Wanbura-Tanzania and Rwanda’s Bonnie Mugabe.

The Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) is represented by the Spokesperson Ahmed Hussein-the only Ugandan at the seminar.

Hussein reflects on the workshop as a great learning experience.

I have learnt a lot. Meeting my fellow communication managers gives me the chance to create links to be used in future. I will definitely share this information with various stake holders back home

The facilitators of the seminar were from FIFA and CAF with experience on African football.

Hans Hultman-FIFA Senior media operations manager is one of the presenters.

Hans talked about the roles of the National FA communications manager who is supposed to create balance between the federation and the media without antagonizing any party’s roles and responsibilities.

The experienced Swede, who is part of the FIFA 2018 World cup in Russia Local Organizing committee, believes that the National FA communication managers need to work hard to feed the media with facts and timely delivery of information.

It is important to lay a good ground for the media when organizing a match. Give the media all the information they need to make their work much easier

    Said Hultman.

He revealed that the key points for a communications manager of any Federation while handling the media are; proper preparations, knowledgeable, knowing the roles and responsibilities, Team work, flexibility and common sense.
He took through the Communication managers on how to handle the journalists at international matches.

The media acts as the bridge between the football federation and public. A good working environment helps them execute their work very well. You need to listen to them and also handle their accreditation properly

    added Hultman.
The participants were also taken through on the importance digital media that is on the rise as another form of communication to cater for the current generation.

You are the windows of African Football. Countries in Europe and the rest of the world are struggling to get information about many African club.s. Give them proper facts to aid their needs and demands

Remarked Gerard Dreyfus who has covered African football for 43 years so far.

    He however cautioned the media;

You need to be careful while reporting because you can create conflicts among society and football administrators

In the process, the communication managers were guided on how to update Member FA pages with content on the CAF website.
    Druyfes further said

This seminar is to equip you with all technical support to improve on your communication with activities from your countries’.

    The CAF Media seminar covered;
-The network of CAF press organs
-General principles of organisational communication: Internal and external communication, press relations, targets and scope of work.
-Methodology on writing press releases and briefs
-Participants’ experiences on the organization of their work in the respective members Fas
-Media operations: chronology, conduct, principles and timing (the eve of the match and math day)

  • Unsung Hero: Ahmed Kabali, Uganda Cranes bus driver

Unsung Hero: Ahmed Kabali, Uganda Cranes bus driver

Special Feature on Uganda Cranes Bus Driver, Ahmed Kabali

Symbolic of the gentleman comfortably seated behind the wheels of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) bus is a flashy smile.

It is his trademark worn label, a common feature that many will in unison agree.

Since 2010, when Ahmed Kabali commenced the FUFA Bus driving responsibilities, he has never looked back.

    Cranes Bus

    Ahmed Kabali proudly talks about his job in line ;

I enjoy my job at FUFA. Football is part of my daily menu that even makes the job more enticing

Kabali is quick to comment of the recent Uganda Sand Cranes journey he embarked on which he tags ‘Historic’.

Ahmed Kabali was comfortably behind the wheels as the Uganda Sand Cranes traveled to Zanzibar, covering a distance of over 3000 KM – to and from.

    DSC08502

The Journey to Zanzibar was the longest I have covered as a driver at FUFA and in fact my whole life. Perhaps, I enjoyed it to perfection

    Kabali remarks.

Ahmed Kabali being thanked by the Uganda Beach Soccer Association (UBSA) Chairman, Deo Mutabazi after the return journey from Zanzibar

He has previously covered another relatively long journey as the Uganda U-17 team (Uganda Cubs) traveled from Kampala, through Kabale via Kigali to the Lake Kivu town of Rubavu.

    Early Life:

Born 42 years ago to Bumbakali Ssebowa Kabali and Mary Nanozzi (unfortunately both deceased), Kabali Junior is the 9th born in a relatively extensive family of 19.

He grew up in Kitagobwa, Butambala in Bulo County of Mpigi District and was as naughty as the name stands.

I was loved by all my family members because the numerous short stories I told were very exciting

The proud father of 9 adds.

    Vast Driving Experience:

Kabali harbors a 25 year’s driving experience since he was 17 years old when his turn boy duties at Nsamba and Sons Limited in 1989.

Two years down the road, he started to drive on his own and up to-date, he has never looked back.

The early years like any beginning were experimental but I eventually made the much needed break through” the Nsangi resident along Masaka Road narrates his humble beginnings.

In 1996, Kabali, made that million dollar transfer to work with his Uncle William Ssenganda.

    _DSC0963

Back then Ssenganda , who was the Brunno and Sons CEO lured loved Kabali’s workaholic attitude and recruited him at his Mengo based firm.

After a 2 years’ time lag, It wasn’t long then when he again transferred – this time to work with the Isuzu Kampala company.

12 months later, Kabali trended the Entebbe road route – but he was to drive in a small vehicle – the taxi, where he worked with Ahmed Kalanzi (former Uganda Cranes bus driver) and Bumbakali Ssendo.

    FUFA comes calling:

Kabali started to drive the FUFA Bus in the year 2010 following the illness of Ahmed Kalanzi (later died) before he took full responsibility to date.

I have loved all the FUFA administrators, Staff, footballers and the media for the support thus far. May be it is obvious without their support, I would not be here now. I am very happy at my job and I earn just enough for my survival and family support

    He confesses to www.fufa.co.ug.

    Challenges:

Like many jobs elsewhere, challenges are always inclined therein.

    Kabali’s job is no exceptional.

Many a times, he has always felt there sections of people working tooth and nail to bring him down at his most treasured job.

Sometime back, someone said, the Cranes Bus was being used for public transport but the truth came out eventually, there is a bus company (Crane Bus Limited) similar to the Uganda Cranes Bus. I cannot risk to indulge in such business

    He adds.

    _DSC1048

Ahmed Kabali being acknowledged by Deo Mutabazi at Kati Kati restaurant shortly after the Uganda Sand Cranes returned from Zanzibar

By and large, Ahmed Kabali is happily married and committed to his job and promises to serve to the best of his ability.
