Elsewhere in Machakos, Sudan walloped Eritrea 3-0 in a one-sided game played on a slippery ground due to heavy rains. Sudan now tops group ‘C’, with three points beating Uganda on goal difference. Coach Sredejovic Milutin Micho said he had identified the key areas that needed improvement and promised a better game against Eritrea on Monday.

    Machakos goes muddy

The Cranes match had also earlier been scheduled for Jomo Kenyatta stadium in Machakos but the technical committee later pushed it to Nyayo stadium in Nairobi to give the ground more time to rest.

    Okwi to return against Eritrea

Cranes team Doctor Ronald Kisolo has sounded optimistic that Emmanuel Okwi would return to action next Monday against lowly ranked Eritrea. The striker is recovering from malaria and missed their opening match against Rwanda this Friday. Speaking about his health Okwi said he was feeling better though still on treatment.

    Ochan classic in goal

Goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan made several saves that would have cost Uganda a loss as Amavubi players pressurized the defending champions. Rwanda head coach Eric Nshimiyimana described Ochan’s performance as being ‘classic’ and warned that as much as Uganda had weaknesses in scoring they had much strength in goalkeeping.

Hamis Kiiza and Nicholas Wadada were the two Ugandan players that received cautions from a Somali referee Wiish Yabarow.

    Kenya faces physical Sudanese

Hosting Harambee stars return to action this Saturday against South Sudan in a search for their first win of the tournament. Kenya and Ethiopia played to a goalless draw in an official opening match on Wednesday.

The team will still play without their Belgian head coach Adel Amrouche who is still on a prolonged strike over failure by Federation Kenya Football (FKF) to pay his salary for four months now. Although the hosts look favourites to win this game, it will not be an easy task against the physical South Sudanese. The Sudanese are making their second appearance in this lucrative regional tournament.

Uganda, Ethiopia, Burundi urged to shine in CHAN

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) President Eng. Leodgar Tenga has urged the region’s representatives in the forthcoming CHAN competitions due in South Africa early next year to put up a good show during the tournaments.

Uganda, Burundi and Ethiopia are the three CECAFA members who qualified for the CHAN finals. “Carry our CECAFA flag up while in South Africa”, Tenga said while addressing an annual CECAFA congress at Hill Park Hotel in Nairobi City Tuesday morning.

Tenga however decried the continued poor show in major competitions naming the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations as one of the areas where members still needed to double efforts. Dwelling much on this point, Tenga said, “Lets re-examine and make fresh strategies for better results in future competitions”.

Ethiopia was singled out and hailed for getting closer to qualification for World Cup Brazil 2014 despite clashing out to Nigeria. Tenga further said CECAFA region was the most active zone in the whole Africa and therefore had the potential perform better in continental competitions.

“As a region we need to improve our performance in FIFA and CAF competitions” Tenga insisted.

Women and Youth competitions set for 2014

Tenga further echoed the need to have both youth and women competitions held starting next year. “We have long talked about this and we must see it starting and it’s our prime target next year”, said the CECAFA President. He was however quick to add that all these programs needed funds.

The President revealed that the executive committee was in final negotiations with Super Sport Company on TV rights but most importantly CECAFA targets having a joint marketing strategy with Super Sport once the contract is signed.

Tenga commended Go-TV, UAP and Coca Cola for emerging sponsors of this year’s tournament. Rwanda head of State Gen. Paul Kagame was also hailed for the continued support towards regional competitions.

CAF considers 3rd slot for CECAFA

The Confederation of Africa Football Associations (CAF) is considering creating a third slot in CAF for CECAFA region. The revelations were made by Mr. Magdi Shams Eldin who represented the continental body in the congress. “We have already discussed this matter with the CAF President Dr. Issa Hayatou and he is very positive”, Magdi told a visibly excited congress. He commended CECAFA for holding regular tournaments and urged the regional leadership to maintain the spirit.

  • Uganda withdraws from U20 FIFA competition

Uganda withdraws from U20 FIFA competition

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) on Monday evening officially announced the withdraw of its National team from the U20 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Canada 2014. Uganda dumped South Sudan 22-0 on aggregate in their first fixture. The Federation CEO, Edgar Watson issued a statement whose details are as below:

    _________________________________________________________________________

FUFA hereby informs all stakeholders that the Uganda U20 Women National team has been withdrawn from the African Preliminaries Competitions of the FIFA U20 Women World Cup Canada 2014.

The withdraw has been confirmed to CAF and subsequently communicated to all the concerned parties including Ghana and the match officials. Uganda was slated to host Ghana on the weekend of 6-8 December 2013 before the return leg a fortnight later.

Having assessed that the new trend required to have substantial funds to prepare and organize for both the home and away matches against Ghana (and Equatorial Guinea or Zambia in case of qualification to the next round within a period of only seven weeks), FUFA could not commit the funds at the expense of other women football activities scheduled on the football calendar year.

The focus henceforth is drawn towards using the available resources to get involved in activities that would engage more girls’ participation in women football within the country. The Federation Technical Director and the line standing committee are in charge of the priorities in this regard.

FUFA further draws everybody’s kind attention that the withdraw from the competition has been done with the spirit of having more girls/women activities done in the country within the available resources.
