  • FIFA Coaching Instructor happy with Ugandan coaches

A cross section of Ugandan Coaches undergoing a FIFA Course

With just two days left to the end of the ongoing Fifa coaching course at Fufa Technical center in Njeru-Jinja, the Fifa instructor Ulric Mathiot (Seychelles) has heap-praised the 30-man class for the wonderful performance so far.

“They have proved that they are good according to their performance in class. I am really impressed and I hope to have very good results at the end.” Ulric told our www.fufa.co.ug correspondent in Jinja shortly after the evening session on Wednesday.

“I have put them in 5 groups of six each but so far they are doing well both theoretically and practically” the Seychellois born instructor further commented.

When approached for a comment, the Fufa Technical Director Asuman Lubowa said he was overwhelmed with the efforts both  Fufa and Fifa have put-in to improve the quality of coaching in the country through such quality courses.

“Each coach shall have acquired modern techniques which encompass different aspects like modern approach to players’ behaviour, approach to FIFA/CAF high profile tournaments, winning matches and developing coaches from playing staffs among others” noted the Ugandan FA Technical Director.

    Instructor Ulric Mathiot

The 5 day Fifa-funded coaching course was officially opened up on Monday this week by the Federation CEO, Edgar Watson Suubi and will end this Friday with the Fufa President Eng. Moses Magogo expected to preside over the closing ceremony.

  • FIFA Coaches’ course rolls off in Njeru

A total of 30 coaches from FUFA super league, Big league and schools are attending a 5 day FIFA coaching course that started at Njeru technical center on Monday morning.

Some of the participants undertaking the course

The five day course funded by FIFA is conducted by a FIFA instructor Ulric Mathiot from the Republic of Seychelles.

According to FUFA technical Director Asuman Lubowa , the course has been brought in to help coaches improve on their performance on the pitch.

’’We appreciate such important courses for our coaches to enable them acquire modern tactics of the game. We want them to empower themselves with more knowledge and trends of modern football,” said Lubowa.

The five day course is mainly attended by top class coaches from both the FUFA Super League and the FUFA Big League who do not possess the CAF ‘C’ Coaching License.

Speaking at the official opening ceremony, Mathiot said he was impressed with the quality of the participants and sounded optimistic that all the 30 participants will automatically benefit from the course.

FUFA CEO Edgar Watson and  instructor Mathiot  before the course opened.

‘’Many times African coaches have not had enough facilities when having courses but this one from FIFA is more detailed and simplified. It gives a coach all modern the aspects that can help him understand the new trends of the game.’’ said the Seychelles veteran FIFA instructor.

On the other hand FUFA CEO Edgar Watson was happy with FIFA’s plan of developing the game with such courses. “As FUFA, we want to see no coach handling a FUFA Super league club without a C-license.

We shall appeal for more of such courses so as to avail our coaches with new coaching methods that match with the current trend of football”, said the CEO.

He also warned the coaches against engaging themselves into football politics but instead concentrate on the technical matters as assigned to them. “Avoid turning political…allow the politicians to discuss political matters and concentrate on your technical role of guiding our young talents within your respective clubs” Watson further advised.

    Class time

BUL FC assistant Coach Arthur Kyesimira was delighted to be part of the course. ’’This course is more detailed than the courses I have attended before. I am hopeful for acquiring new and relevant knowledge that will in turn benefit my club” said a visibly excited Kyesimira.

  • The Monthly message from the office of the FUFA President

I take this opportunity to salute all Ugandans and the supporters of Ugandan Football. It is the first of my monthly communications that I will be making to share my vision and experiences in the office of the FUFA President.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo (R), FUFA Honorary President Lawrence Mulindwa (C) and CECAFA President Eng. Leodgar Tenga in Jinja, Uganda during the FUFA elections in August.

On the 31st August 2013 in Jinja, I was elected FUFA President by 68 votes out of 73 that participated in the election. I believe the 5 votes were just a mistake by the voters but I stand to believe that I will be supported by the entire FUFA General Assembly. Thank you very much the FUFA Delegates and I will work hard not to disappoint your confidence in me. I will strongly to work in close relationship with CECAFA, CAF and FIFA as they stand for development and upholding the rules of the game.

On 11th September 2013, Mr. Lawrence Mulindwa physically handed over the office to me. I once again applaud him to pass on the button of top football administration when he could still win unopposed and I shall work closely with him to take football to the next level. It is a legacy that all football administrators in Uganda must embrace.

    Congratulations Messages

FIFA President Dr. Sepp Blatter sent congratulatory message to Eng. Moses Magogo

Upon election, I have been overwhelmed by congratulation messages from individuals and organisations. I cannot thank each one of you for it would be endless but notably the FIFA President herein quoted “I am certain that your knowledge and personal qualities will have an important impact on the stable development of our beautiful game in your country” CAF President, CECAFA President, the Football associations of Jordan, Zambia, Senegal, Japan, England to name but a few.

Status of the top league football
Top league football is currently engulfed with personalities, greed, egos, intrigue, wrangles and court battles and it’s not healthy for the game. Club football is highly deficient of quality and quality human resource in the areas of coaches, players, administrators, specialised support services professionals, sports medicine specialists, referees, fans etc
Football is played on the pitch and enjoyed by the people in this country. I will continue to steer FUFA to work tirelessly with all stakeholders to ensure that top league football is professional and cherished by all.

I take this opportunity to rally the country and to call upon all people involved in this matter to think beyond self for these matters as the only way to find a lasting solution. We have an obligation as a current generation to our grandchildren.

    National Teams
Uganda Cranes; Despite the top drawer preparations of the Uganda Cranes with international matches Tanzania in Dar salaam, Tanzania in Kampala, Egypt in El Gouna, Botswana in Gaborone and a camp in Turkey, we did not recover from earlier unfavourable results along the campaign. The players and technical team put up a solid performance that we are proud of and one that can be used more as a foundation for the future. Consequently, the road to 2014 Brazil World Cup ended but the road to 2015 AFCON Morocco and 2018 World Cup Russia opened. As FUFA we shall give our best shot and sooner than later, the 2015 AFCON Agenda will be launched.

I take this opportunity to thank H.E The President of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the right Honourable prime minister, Amama Mbabazi, the Hon Minister of Education and Sports Rtd Maj Jessica Alupo, the Hon Minister of State for Sports, Charles Bakabulindi, the Hon Minister of State for Primary Education, Hon Kamanda Bataringaya, the staff of the State House, the staff of the Ministry of Education and Sports, the staff and officials of FUFA and the selected and unselected fans of Uganda Cranes for the historic and first of its kind, a chartered flight for the fans to support the Uganda Cranes to Marrakech, Morocco.

President Y.K Museveni handing over a cash cheque to FUFA recently

I will further thank H.E the President of the Republic of Uganda, the entire Government of Uganda for the financial support that helped the team get as prepared as it was. The story would have been different without this timely help. Three hundred eighty four (384) million Uganda Shillings was received from Government. The preparations of the Egypt and Botswana friendly matches, the camp in Turkey, and the air tickets for players from their bases and back amounted to over Four hundred ninety (490) million shillings. This leaves the match in deficit of over One hundred (100) million shillings owed to one of the air ticket providers. All accountabilities and supporting documents have already been submitted to Government

    Football Competitions
FUFA Super League; Despite the challenges affecting the top league in Uganda, FUFA Super League enters round 6 at the time of writing this monthly briefing with Soana FC and Olaki Francis as the new revelations.
FUFA Big League; the fixtures have been released and this week will see the 5th edition of the FUFA Big League Kickoff. This tournament has helped promote only teams that are ready to the top league, it continues to give the countrywide look to club football, and in structures, these clubs have 10 delegates in the FUFA General Assembly with a fully functional association.
Other Competitions; the Lower leagues will continue under the management of the Regional Football Associations while the Uganda Cup is still under preparations. I also take the opportunity to thank the organisers and participants of other FUFA authorised football competitions such as Masaza Cup, Bika Cup, etc

    U-20 Women National Team
Over the years, girls’ football development continues through amongst others schools competitions. After the 2013 National and East African School girls’ football competitions, a selected U-20 Women National was prepared to play in the 2014 Canada, FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

To those who have been following the development of women football in Uganda, it was not a surprise that Uganda eliminated South Sudan on 22-0 goal aggregate. This home and away match did not cost FUFA less than One hundred twenty (120) million shillings in air tickets to Juba, air tickets, allowances, accommodation and local costs to 6 match officials, hosting the South Sudan team etc. It is still ironical that whereas FIFA give FUFA about Seventy five (75) million shillings for women football, the team will not consume less than Three hundred (300) million shillings as Uganda faces Egypt on 26th October 2013 in Egypt and 14 days later in Kampala. The South Sudan Game in Kampala did not gross one (1) million shilling in collections.

    Executive Committee Meeting
On Wednesday 18th September 2013, I chaired the 13-003 FUFA Executive Committee meeting and the first one in my capacity as FUFA President. 115 men and women were appointed on various standing committees. Analysts made their views not appreciating that these committees are only supposed to help the FUFA executive Committee make good decisions at policy level but not to run day to day activities of FUFA. We have laid down Terms of Reference for the 18 standing and 5 adhoc committees and we have also set objectives of each individual committee to be achieved by 30th June 2014.
Ambassadors of the Uganda Cranes were named but details of their role and contribution are still being completed by the FUFA Secretariat.

    Special Roles

Mr. Justus Mugisha was selected to head FUFA’s reconciliation mechanism while Mr. Kalibbala has been chosen to head a committee to make a thorough report of football facilities in Uganda and the way forward amongst other special tasks.SecretariatThere are a number of changes taking place at the hub of football in Uganda and that is FUFA House. The access control has been revitalised where staff have been issued with access cards to the building. The reception is functional and our guests need to go through security checks and reception before they access the interior of offices. FUFA staff members have been provided with more hours to work for football. I call upon our guests especially the football public to understand this as important for the game as more man-hours will be injected into the game for better football service delivery. The staff members have been re-allocated in roles. Each member of the staff has now a job title and job description. Objectives to be reasonably achieved by 31st March 2014 for each staff have been set. Those that prove that they are up to the standards by completing their objectives set by management will be offered performance based 3-year renewable contracts with improved pay while those that management will consider unsatisfactory will be replaced through a transparent recruitment process. The process to recruit the Finance Director, Commercial Director and Competitions Director has started.

Ms. Sumaya Hood has been brought in as the Personal Assistant to the FUFA President. Among others, she manages the appointments and the diary of the FUFA President. I take this opportunity to advise all persons and organisations that would wish to meet the FUFA President for official matters to access Ms Hood through the address papresident@fufauganda.com or physically checking her out at FUFA House for an appointment.

    Communications

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo (2nd left) attending a press conference recently

FUFA will hire a consultant to the Communications Sector for a period of at least 1 year. He/she will be required to setup a communications strategy and work with the current personnel to setup roles and functions in the area of communications. The roles currently include a spokesperson who heads the TV, Radio and Print media unit, the Cyber Media Officer who will manage the mass mails, blogs, FUFA Chat Rooms, Forums, e-letter, website, social media and SMS platform and the Brands Communication Officer will basically interface Marketing with communications.
FUFA is in the process of changing official e-mail addresses to include the official FUFA domain thus xxx@fufauganda.com instead of yahoo accounts.

    FIFA projects
Upon assumption of office, FIFA welcomed the new President and Executive committee with approval of a Goal Project worth 500,000 USD, Performance Programme, and two courses in Administration and Coaching. There has also been an approval for the second artificial ground and a consultant from FIFA will soon be in the country to confirm the location of the construction site.

    Government on NCS Regulations

Education and sports Minister Hon. Jesca Alupo and her Deputy Hon. Charles Bakabulindi.

FUFA continued to dialogue with the task force that was set by the Hon Minister of Education and Sports to draft regulations for the operationalization of the 1964 NCS Act. She is applauded as the first Minister since 1964 to draw these regulations. FUFA however continues to express the dissatisfaction with the committee on its failure to listen and comprehend the dynamics of the associations and international affiliation requirements. Forcing associations to incorporate under the Trustees Act contravenes affiliation requirements for the case of FIFA. FUFA has received the legal opinion from independent lawyers contrary to the position of the committee. FUFA has also received written communication from FIFA confirming that the incorporation by Trustees Act contravenes FIFA statutes.
As FUFA we appreciate regulations that allow FUFA to continue transacting within the Ugandan law with external parties such as sponsors and partners, sue and be sued, own assets etc but also not to contravene with international (FIFA) affiliation.

    Member Associations

FUFA is now composed of 8 regional football associations, 6 special interest group members, the FUFA Big League and 16 FUFA Super League Clubs. New Statutes and Elections for 30 out of 31 Members have been undertaken. A general assembly of 84 Delegates in Place, the Executive Committee elected, the standing committees of 115 persons named, the Judicial bodies in place and the Secretariat undergoing changes bring to completion a strong foundation of the structures of FUFA.

     Work in Progress

    Finance Systems

The FUFA Finance Manual was approved by the FUFA Executive Committee on its sitting on 18th September and comes into force on 1st November 2013. This is aimed at prudent and frugal means of handling finance matters at FUFA that I promised in my manifesto. It is also aimed at forcing budget discipline and management of cash flow.

    Human Resource System
The Human Resource Manual was also approved by the FUFA Executive Committee on its sitting on 18th September and comes into force immediately. This is aimed at efficient service delivery of the FUFA Secretariat for the proper functioning of the other bodies of FUFA.

    Rebranding

FUFA is undertaking the “behind-the-scenes” activities to rebrand itself. The intention is to position FUFA commercial properties in a more appealing and satisfying manner to the consumers and that is the fans, Government and the corporate organisations. This exercise will also be launched along a set of innovations to widen the resource envelope to FUFA for more aggressive football development programmes.

    Education Curriculum
The Education committee that was setup is undertaking the realignment and detail of the Human Resource development curriculum in the areas of coaching, administration, sports medicine and Refereeing.

    Conclusion

    FUFA boss: Eng Moses Magogo

    The current issues between FUFA and USL have exposed the real problem to Ugandan Football as lacking structures of real football clubs. It remains a huge task to create football clubs that can suit the current economic and sporting times. FUFA is creating a programme called “FUFA Clubs Pro” where clubs in the FUFA Super League and the FUFA Big League will apply and a set of expert instructors will sit with the club management to create the 11 players that make a football club. For purposes of clarity, the lineup of these players stands as follows;
    1-Structure, 2-Finance, 3-Medical, 4-Facilities, 5-Stadium, 6-Team (the only player every Ugandan Club has), 7-Youth Setup, 8-Marketing, 9-Fans Development, 10-Communications, 11-Events Management Until the next edition.

I pray to the Almighty to keep us safe, in harmony and thinking of development. It is our game, it is our country

Emmanuel Okwi in action against Angola in June this year.

Uganda Cranes lead striker Emmanuel Okwi yesterday (Monday) officially reported at Villa park to start training with SC Villa, a club in the FUFA Super League.

There was a lot of excitement as Okwi stormed the training ground a head of their next league fixture against Soana FC this Tuesday.

“I am happy to be back home and I am going to offer my best for the time I shall be here. I feel SC Villa will automatically not remain the same there during my stay”, said Okwi.

Okwi was recently cleared by the International Football body (FIFA) to feature for SC Villa after an alleged breach of contract by his Tunisian former club.

In other league fixture to be honoured today, Proline FC will host Vipers at Lugogo while Kiira Young takes on new entrants CRO FC in Namboole Stadium.

  • Uganda takes on Egypt in an international friendly match today

The Uganda Cranes will play the Egyptian National ‘A’ team this Monday evening without its key central defender and Victoria University player Denis Iguma.

The team travelled last evening without Iguma who is reportedly serving an injury. The Egyptian friendly match was a last minute alternative for the Iraq match that is still in suspense. By this morning, Uganda had not got a final confirmation as to whether the game in Jordan on October 2 would take place.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo has however hailed the Egyptian FA for a timely response towards the request. “As FUFA we are grateful to Egypt for the continued cordial working relationship with us. Considering us for this international friendly is evident that our relationship continues to prosper”, Magogo said.

Uganda last played Egypt in an international friendly match about a month ago  and lost 3-0 but head Coach Miluti ‘Micho’ Sredojevic is optimistic that his new side will shine against the hosts this time.

Micho’s team travelled without a single professional player and comprised mainly young stars whom he said needed a lot of exposure as he builds a formidable side to compete in the Orange CHAN 2014 competition scheduled for early next year.

The players on squad that have played international matches before include Captain Richard Kasagga, Joseph Mpande, Saidi Kyeyune, Brian Majwega, Kalanda Frank and Nicholas wadada.

The details confirming the Irag match will be communicated later today and if it aborts then the team will travel back to Kampala on Tuesday.

The full squad in Cairo: Goal keepers: Brian Bwete and Benjamin Ochan.

Defenders: Hassan Wasswa, Simon Namwanja, Savio Kabugo, Yusuf Mukisa, Jonathan Mugabi, Nicholas Wadada, Richard Kasagga and Ayub Kisalita (defenders).

Midfielders: Joseph Mpande, Brian Nkumbi, Feni Moses, Said Kyeyune, Brian Majwega and Manco Kawesa.

Strikers: are Kalanda Frank and Simon okwi.

  • Uganda dumps South Sudan from U20 World Cup Campaign

Results: Uganda 13 South Sudan 0/ First leg: South Sudan 0 Uganda 9

Uganda is building a strong women team

Uganda U20 National Women team registered their first ever biggest international win when they walloped visiting South Sudan 13-0 in the second leg of the 2014 FIFA U20 Women World Cup qualifier match played in Kampala this Saturday.

South Sudan therefore got ejected from the competition on a 22-0 aggregate following a first leg 9-0 loss in Juba.

The trio of Rita Kivumbi, Hasfer Nassuna and Sandra Nabweteme scored a hat trick each in a one sided game watched by a relatively small audience of spectators. Other scorers were Dorothy Nakato, Sylivia Nakazibwe, Jeninga Awadifo and Naome Nagaddya.

Kivumbi launched the fight with an early goal in the 3rd minute and wound up the assignment in the 85th minute with a brilliant finishing that left the visitors speechless.

Uganda will now face Egypt on October 26. The best two countries will represent Africa at the final tournament to be held from 5th – 24th August next year in Canada.

FUFA Executive Committee Member and chairperson of the Women Football Committee Marian Nakulima Kaliga hailed her young girls attributing the win to team work from both players and the officials.

  • FUFA speaks out on alleged FSL-USL Merger

The FUFA Vice President in charge of the FUFA Super League (FSL) Mujib Kasule has clarified on the allegations that FUFA has given back the mandate to run the FSL to the Uganda Super League Limited (USLL). Below is his statement:

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

FUFA Vice President Mujib Kasule (right) with the former FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa in 2011. Kasule has clarified that the FSL has not been given back to USL as alleged.

My office is in receipt of wide spreading allegations that the mandate to run the National football league by the FUFA Super League Limited has been given back to Uganda Super League Limited (USLL).

Personally, together with my office have not been engaged in any meetings or negotiations in relation to the above in particular with USLL.

Please note that the FUFA Assembly gave the mandate to the FUFA Super League Limited owned by the 16 clubs to run the League and it remains so unless this position is reversed by the same Supreme body.

I therefore wish to assure the entire football fraternity and the general public that the FUFA Super League will continue running undisrupted.  Further note that the right to change its name, management or format is strictly a reserve of FUFA Super League Limited.

FUFA however welcomes positive negotiations with any third party whose consequences do not affect the game.

I therefore urge the public to remain calm and continue supporting the FSL as the only body in Uganda mandated by FUFA to run the national league.

  • South Sudan in, opts for private stay

Ritah Kivumbi scored twice in Juba and is expected among the starters on Saturday

The South Sudanese U20 National Women football team arrived in Kampala this Thursday morning but rejected to be accommodated by FUFA and opted for a private arrangement.

The move by the South Sudanese guests is perhaps intended to avoid meeting the FIFA/CAF penalties for denying the Ugandan delegation accommodation in Juba during the first leg match. The tournament rules provide that the hosting nation must accommodate, feed and avail internal transport for the visiting team.

The Ugandan team remained stranded at Juba International Airport for over 4 hours as no information related to their accommodation was available till fresh arrangements had to be done from Kampala.

The federation has already notified the relevant football authorities for compensation of lost funds. We had also incurred costs in booking for their stay at Grand Global Hotel in Makerere. They are currently residing at SHINE Hotel in Kansanga on a private arrangement.

The Saturday match will be handled by a set of Rwandese female referees led by M/s Tuyishime Angelique and Mukansange Salma as the standby referee.  M/s Murangwa Sandrine and M/s Ingabire Francine are the first and second assistant referees respectively. These are expected in Kampala on Friday morning aboard Rwanda Air.

The match Commissioner M/s. Atieno Maqulate arrives two hours earlier than her referees. The Pre-Match meeting will be conducted at FUFA Headquarters here in Mengo on Friday at 6:00pm (Local Time).

  • Taban Amin chooses ‘to join FUFA’ after aborted move to become president

L-R: MTN’s Aggrey Kagonyera, FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa, Vice President Moses Magogo, Taban Amin and Rogers Byamukama at the official opening ceremony of the FUFA-MTN inter regional tournament in Hoima last week

Former FUFA Presidential aspirant Taban Amin took a wise decision of joining the Federation and working together after failing to meet the basic requirements to contest for Presidency in the elections scheduled for August 31st at Njeru technical Centre.

Taban, son to former head of state Gen. Idi Amin ‘Dada’ was part of the audience that camped in Hoima to watch the FUFA-MTN inter regional competitions that officially closed last weekend. Buganda beat defending champions Eastern 4-2 on spot kicks after a 1-all draw in the normal time to lift the title.

Taban Amin shaking hands with FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa as Magogo and Rogers Byamukama look on.

On arrival for the opening ceremony, Taban walked direct to the front table where the outgoing FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa and the incoming President Eng. Moses Magogo were seated and shook hands with them as a sign of unity. To further show respect to the federation leaders, Taban stood upright, took off his military cap and greeted Mulindwa before taking his seat.

“Football needs all of us and we shall work together…thanks for the good work so far done. We are at a better stage than before” Taban was heard saying in a conversation with Mulindwa.

When time for the inspection of players came, Taban moved alongside Mulindwa and Magogo and stood next to them as the band played the national anthem.

Taban was among the six aspirants who picked the nomination forms to contest for the position of the FUFA President but the Electoral committee threw him out after failing to meet some of the basic requirements.

Taban’s action to get close to FUFA is a welcome idea and others should emulate him instead of resisting the federation from a distance.
