    Sand Cranes overcome Jinja Lions in practice match

    Uganda National Beach Soccer team continued with its preparations for the final hurdle of Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers by defeating Jinja Lions BSC in a practice game played on Wednesday at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.

    The Sand Cranes were dominant right from onset, eventually going ahead to win the game 12-4.

    Nicholas Mwere led the way with a hat trick while Ambrose Kigozi and Joshua Lubwama struck a brace apiece.

    The other goals came from Allan Katwe, Rica Byaruhanga , Paul Lule, Godfrey Lwesibawa and Brian Nkuubi.

    Jinja Lions got their goals through Pascal Ngobi Pascal ,Ivan Waako, Arafat Wandera and an own goal by Katwe.

    Uganda is preparing to host Comoros on 7th August in the return leg of Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers 2022, Mozambique.

    It should be noted that the Sand Cranes won the reverse fixture 5-2.

    Coach Salim Jamal Muwonge believes his charges are ready to complete the job and return to the coveted Africa Cup of Nations.

                                                                                                                                 "Since we returned from Comoros, our emphasis has been on being efficient both in defending and going forward. I am confident the players will be able to complete the task this weekend." He said.

    “The performance from today’s friendly match has been good and we can only build from the positives realized.”

    Uganda Cranes earned victory over Western Region Select Team in the Cranes Regional tour game played on Tuesday at Kyamate Stadium, Ntungamo.

    Whereas the regional team put up resilient performance in the opening stanza, Uganda Cranes proved too strong,winning 3-0.

    The game was watched by hundreds of enthusiastic football fans from Ntungamo and the neighbouring areas.

    Second half substitutes Titus Ssematimba and Rogers Mato got the goals for the National team.

    Ssematimba who was making his first appearance for the National team scored a brace before Mato put the icing on the cake moments later.

    The home side posed threats in the opening stages of the game with veteran striker Walter Rubangkene getting scoring opportunities but failed to put them to good use.

    On the other hand, the best two chances for Uganda in the first half fell to Martin Kizza and Saidi Kyeyune but both could not find the target.

    Coach Milutin Sredojevic aka Micho made several changes including bringing on both Mato and Ssematimba at the start of the second stanza.

    Ssematimba took just two minutes to announce his arrival, connecting well to a good delivery from his teammate at Wakiso Giants FC, George Kaddu.

    The industrious midfielder got his second on the day three minutes before the hour mark, this time scoring from Isma Mugulusi’s through pass.

    The third goal came in the 78th minute with Mato capitalizing on a goal melee to score from close range.

    Coach Micho believes this was a good test for his charges as preparations for CHAN Qualifiers against Tanzania continue.

    “I believe this was a good test for the players. We improved a lot in the second half and we hope to build on the positives realized today.” He said.

    Uganda will play Tanzania away on 27th August before the return leg at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on 3rd September.

    The winner on aggregate will qualify to the final tournament slated for January next year in Algeria.

    First Ever Match Coordinators Course gets underway at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru

    Capacity building is a key area in developing football especially off the pitch. FUFA is aware of the aforementioned fact and there are always deliberate plans to make sure more human resource is employed.

    Match Coordinators are very important in making games are organized and played without any blemishes.

    It is upon this background that FUFA has organized a three-day match coordinators course, the first of its kind in Africa.

    The workshop got underway on Monday at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru under the tutorship of experienced CAF Match General Coordinator, Kabelo Bosilong.

    FUFA Executive Committee Member Rogers Byamukama officially launched the workshop on Monday with a total of 54 participants attending.

    In his remarks Byamukama indicated FUFA has a structured plan to improve on matchday experiences and such courses will help to create a pool of qualified personnel to handle.

    “The value of the General Coordinators Course is huge to the management of game day experience not only in Uganda but the entire region because this is the very first General Coordinators Course by a Member Association in CAF and one of our key pillars in the hat trick is Sport.  You can not achieve sporting success without the conversant human resource. This is one of the critical areas we are training and as FUFA we are very proud for taking this initiative and we expect this to improve our matchday experience and the game of football in general,” he stated.

    Kabelo on the other hand lauded FUFA for the initiative and asked participants to start practicing at the lower levels of the game so as to garner experience.

    ‘I thank FUFA for such a great initiative of the Match Coordinators course which has not been done by any African FA. You participants are fortunate that you have where to start from rather than us who had to start from the top.  In CAF, FUFA is one of the top three FAs performing well off the pitch and I thank the Federation leaders for the great work done. This course will help you get the knowledge on how to organize matches and you can go from here and practice the lowest level.” Said Kabelo.

    The course will run up to Wednesday covering several areas such as matchday hospitality, game management, safety and security etc.

    The FUFA Drum tournament played across 16 provinces of the country returned bigger and better after a two-year absence due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

    The long wait was treated to thrilling display with Bukedi hosting Kampala at Butaleja district headquarters on Saturday in the opening game that was later followed by other three games televised live on FUFA TV.

    Below is a look at the players that were outstanding in the four games to take home the Man Of The Match Award, an honour that comes with a plaque and cash prize of USH 100,000 courtesy of Nile Special and FUFA.

    Bukedi vs Kampala (Butaleja Ground).

    Kampala came from a goal down to earn a vital point in the round of 16 first leg. Mathew Odongo broke the deadlock for the hosts in the 40th minute capitalising on a Fred Gwoto cross before silky youthful forward Travis Mutyaba leveled matters with 14 minutes to play.

    Mutyaba went ahead to be named Man of the match.

    Both teams will face off again in the return leg on 13th August at Wankulukuku stadium to determine who goes through to the quarter finals.

    Lango vs Ankole (Akiibua stadium)

    In a fully packed Akiibua stadium, the hosts under Uganda Cranes legend David Obua played out to a goaless draw against Bainomugisha Viali’s Ankole.

    Both sides had clear chances to score but couldn’t. URA FC pacy winger Joachim Ojera had his goal ruled out in the dieing minutes of the match before he was named man of the match.

    The two sides will square off against in three weeks at Kagongo grounds in Ibanda.

    Bugisu vs Sebei (Mbale stadium)

    As expected, the hosts made a light work of their neighbors in the first leg to gain advantage. Unlike the previous two editions, Sebei looked a much changed side as they played some interesting and eye catching football on the afternoon. They fell 3-0 thanks to KCCA FC midfielder Arafat Usama brace both from free kicks and substitute Steven Makumba strikes.

    Usama went on the be named man of the match.

    Sebei will host the return leg on Sunday 21st August at Sebei College, Kapchorwa.

    Busoga 1-2 Teso (Ssaza ground, Iganga)

    Teso defied odds to stern Busoga in front of their own backyard to garner maximum points on the road in a closely contested tie.

    Ben Ocen drew first blood in the 10th minute silence the home crowd.

    Jerome Kirya leveled matters for the hosts in the 66th before Arua Hill SC Ivan Eyam won it for Teso in the 80th to get the first leg advantage.

    Ocen went on to win the man of the match accolade.

    They will get back into action on 20th August at the Emokori grounds in Bukedea district to determine who storms the quarter finals.

    Bugisu Province made light work of neighbours Sebei in the first leg of the round of 16.

    In the game played on Sunday at Mbale Stadium, the Bamasaba literally broke no sweat to dispatch Sebei, winning 3-0.

    Arafat Usama who features for KCCA FC in the Uganda Premier League scored twice before Steven Makumba added the other.

    Arafat Usama was named man of the match.

    Right from onset, Bugisu showed intent and made several inroads at Sebei’s goal.

    Just two minutes into the game,the home side took the lead with Usama curling home direct from a free kick.

    His second goal on the day was also a free kick that went beyond Sebei’s goalkeeper.

    Makumba had scored the other goal for Bugisu at the hour mark thus all but putting the tie beyond Sebei’s reach.

    The two teams will face off in the return leg on Sunday, 21st August at Sebei College in Kapchorwa.

    Teso Province defied odds to stern Busoga as the two teams faced off in the first leg of the round of 16.

    In a closely contested encounter played at Ssaza Ground, Iganga, Teso fought hard to win 2-1 and thus take advantage in the tie.

    Ben Ocen who was named man of the match opened the scoring in the 10th minute capitalizing on a defence lapse by Busoga.

    Ivan Oyam’s initial effort hit the woodwork and goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga punched the ball into Ocen’s path who did no mistake to fire home.

    Busoga found the equalizer in the 66th minute through midfielder Jerome Kirya who slotted the ball past onrushing goalkeeper Tom Ikara.

    With ten minutes left on the clock, Teso regained their lead thanks to a superb finish from Eyam.

    The two teams will face off in the return leg on 20th August at Emokori Ground in Bukedea district.

    The winner on aggregate will then proceed to the group stage.

    In the other game played on Sunday, Bugisu made light work of neighbours Sebei, winning 3-0 at Mbale Stadium.

    Usama Arafat netted a brace while the other goal was scored by Steven Makumba.

    Coach Micho names 26-man squad for Western Regional Tour

    Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin Sredojevic aka Micho has named a squad of 26 players that will travel to Western Uganda for the Regional Tour.

    The National team will face Western Region on Tuesday at Kyamate Playground in Ntungamo district.

    The squad named has four goalkeepers, nine defenders, five midfielders and seven forwards.

    It should be noted that the team is currently without KCCA FC left back Ibrahim Juma (still engaged with KCCA FC U20 team) and Vipers SC players.

    This will be the second test match for Uganda Cranes (CHAN Team) since entering camp on Monday.

    On Saturday, the team won 2-1 against Uganda Premier League outfit, UPDF FC courtesy of goals from Saidi Kyeyune and Andrew Ssemakula (own goal).

    Uganda is preparing to face Tanzania in the 2023 African Nations Championship (CHAN) Qualifiers where the winner on aggregate will progress to the final tournament slated for January in Algeria.

    The first leg will take place on 27th August at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium while the return leg will be played on 3rd September at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

    The encounter between Lango and Ankole produced no winner as the two provinces settled for a goalless draw.

    In the game played on Saturday at Akii-Bua Stadium on the outskirts of Lira City, both teams opted for a cagey approach.

    The game was watched by a mammoth crowd that did not move even when the heavens opened midway the second half.

    Uganda Cranes legend David Obua was in the dug out for the home side while Ankole had Vialli Bainomugisha who was returning to a familiar territory having led Blacks Power to Uganda Premier League promotion on the same ground.

    Obua in his post-match remarks indicated there is room for improvement ahead of the return leg.

    “The game was cagey but we were the better side. We created scoring opportunities and did not allow them any shot on target. I believe we van build on that and improve ahead of the return leg.” He said.

    Joackim Ojera of Lango was named man of the match.

    His counterpart Bainomugisha was delighted for picking a point on the road and has the belief his charges will win the next fixture.

    “To come here and get a point is satisfying. This feels like a win and we want to build on this going into the return leg.”

    Ankole will host Lango three weeks from now at Kagongo Ground in Ibanda district with the winner on aggregate advancing to the group stage.

    In the other game played on Saturday, Kampala rallied from a goal down to earn a point against Bukedi.

    Matthew Odongo had given Bukedi the lead in the first half but Kampala under the stewardship of coach Fred Kajjoba got the equalizer through Travis Mutyaba.

    Kampala Province fought hard to earn a point against Bukedi in the first game of the 2022 FUFA Drum.

    The tournament played across 16 provinces of the country returned bigger and better after a two-year lull due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

    The long wait was treated to thrilling display with Bukedi hosting Kampala at Butaleja district headquarters on Saturday in a game televised live on FUFA TV.

    It should be noted all FUFA Drum games will be broadcast live on TV, an addition that is expected to widen the coverage of the coveted Championship that runs along the theme-line “Celebrating Our Ancestry.”

    Bukedi drew first blood with Mathew Odong finding the back of the net in the 40th minute. The forward was quick to tap home Fred Gwotwo’s cross.

    However, Travis Mutyaba let Kampala off the hook, finding the equalizer, 14 minutes to time.

    The diminutive forward with quick feet went past Peter Magambo before sending a low drive at the near post.

    The two teams will face in the return leg on 13th August at Muteesa II Stadium with the winner on aggregate advancing to the group stage.

    Uganda Cranes earned victory over Uganda Premier League outfit UPDF FC in a practice game played on Saturday at Bombo Barracks Ground.

    An own goal from defender Andrew Ssemakula and Saidi Kyeyune’s free kick gave Uganda Cranes advantage before substitute Phillip Angelo Taban got the consolation for UPDF FC.

    The Cranes started on the better note and it did not take long to open the scores with the first goal coming in the 4th minute.

    Rogers Mato made a good run off the left wing and his intended cross was diverted to goal by onrushing defender Ssemakula.

    In the 7th minute, Derrick Ndahiro nearly doubled the advantage but the UPDF FC goalkeeper was well stationed to parry the ball over.

    The shot stopper was once again called to action in the 20th minute, saving Mato’s low drive.

    Brian Mato thought he had found the second goal for Uganda Cranes when he slid to score from Roger Mato’s cross but the former was adjudged to have been offside.

    It was Kyeyune who stretched the lead for the National Team, curling home straight from a free kick just outside the area.

    The first change for coach Milutin Sredojevic saw George Kasonko paving way for Frank Ssebufu at the stroke of halftime.

    There were further changes after recess with Abdallah Ssekandi, Hassan Ssenyonjo, Emmanuel Kalyowa replacing Rogers Mato, Moses Waiswa and Nafian Alionzi in that order.

    Frank Kalule and Mpagi also came on later, replacing George Kaddu and Kyeyune.

    UPDF FC got the consolation through lanky forward Taban who had come on as a substitute. He headed home in 71st minute.

    Coach Micho believes the match helped him in assessing the level of fitness of players.

    “I am happy that we have had such a game to know where we stand. The first half performance was impressive with players like Moses Waiswa and Saidi Kyeyune doing well. That changed in the second half when we brought on guest players,” he stated.

    “With many players released to go for FUFA Drum matches, we believe they will get the competitive aspect as we now switch focus to the regional tour game against Western on Tuesday.” Micho added.

    The team currently in camp at Cranes Paradise Hotel, Kisasi is preparing for African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2022 Qualifiers.

    Uganda will face the winner on aggregate between Somalia and Tanzania.

    The wait is finally over as the FUFA Drum returns this weekend with eight of the sixteen Province teams in action around the country. The 3rd edition will bring back many memories of action from the past two editions held in 2018 an 2019 before Covid-19 hit hard and let to inactivity for two years. Now, it is time for the football fraternity to enjoy the tournament under the theme ‘Celebrating Our Ancestry.

    Matchday one will be filled with thought-provoking action especially in Lira at the Akii Bua stadium when Lango hosts Ankole on Saturday afternoon. It is a highly anticipated match.

    The White Rhinos have brought back Uganda Cranes Legend David Obua as their head coach in anticipation of improving their performance this season while Ankole will rely on Vialli Beinomugisha in the dugout. Under Obua in the 2nd edition of the FUFA Drum, Lango were playing the best free flowing and attacking football in the tournament. They dared to take on any team. He is a darling in Lira. However, Beinomugisha also enjoy that love from the fans s he returns to the City that gave him a lot of joy by leading Blacks Power FC to the Uganda Premier League. He is on a different mission this time and his opposite number is David Obua.

    Lango Province is relying on their star players Moses Aliro, Joakim Ojera, Ivan Okello, Isaac Okello, Denis Omedi, Emmanuel Okech and Darius Ojok.

    The team from the land of milk and honey have goalkeeper Denis Otim, Joseph Akandwanaho, Chrales Musiige, Ashraf Mugume among other players in a bid to go past Lango.

    The other game n Saturday kick off at 2pm. Head coach Abbey Kikomeko is handling Bukedi who host Fred Kajoba’s Kampala Province at Booma Grounds in Butaleja.

    Bukedi Province is looking forward to massive talent of Julius Poloto, John Revita all from KCCA FC , Fredson Gwoto of Bul FC and Ronald Musana.

    Kampala have Martin Kizza, Gavin Kizito, Travis Mutyaba, Titus Ssematimba and Ibrahim Kasule.

    FUFA President, Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim has promised on behalf of the Executive to pay USD2000 to each member of the 25-man Sand Cranes contingent if they qualify for the AFCON Beach Soccer Finals this year.

    Uganda won the first leg 5-2 in Moroni and will play the final and second leg on 7th August 2022 at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.

    FUFA President met the team in Njeru on Thursday together with the Leader Of Delegation Ronnie Kalema, Deputy CEO-Football Decolas Kiiza, FUFA Football Development Director Ali Mwebe and National Teams Manager Patrick Ntege.

    ‘We are here to motivate the team. We know how much we have invested in the development of Beach soccer in Uganda. It is time to keep shining on the Continent and this must be done by knocking out Comoros next weekend’ noted FUFA President.

    The winner on aggregate will qualify for the final tournament that will be hosted by Mozambique later this year.

    PICTORIAL: Uganda Cranes training on Wednesday through the lens

    Uganda Cranes preparation for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2022 Qualifiers entered day three with the team conducting double training sessions at Kampala Quality Primary School Playground.

    Under the stewardship of Coach Milutin Sredojevic alias Micho, the first stages of training have dwelled on uplifting the fitness levels of the players.

    Uganda will face either Somalia or Tanzania in the final qualification hurdle to the biennial showpiece that will be staged in Algeria early next year.

    FUFA Media Services Limited (102.1 FUFA fm and FUFA Tv) staff are currently undergoing a FUFA Administration and Management Course (FAMACO I) at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.

    The workshop that got underway on Monday, will run up to Friday, equipping the new staff with football knowledge.

    He indicated that the purpose of this Course is prepare the new recruits before commencing work.

    ‘We have alot of belief in you and we shall support you in all possible ways. We have invested alot in this project and being here is not by mistake but to polish you before we fully get started. The ball is now in your hands to prove us right or wrong.’ He said during the opening day.

    Over 40 staff members are in Njeru. Facilitators lecture on different topics including FUFA and its development programmes, football governance and administration.

    The workshop also provides an opportunity to equip the new staff with more knowledge about media practices and principles.

    It should noted that FUFA Media Services Limited advertised job opportunities with over 600 applicants turning up for interviews. All successful applicants were considered for the course.

    Uganda Cranes entered day two of training on Tuesday s preparations for African Nations Championship (CHAN) Qualifiers continue.

    The team had a double training session at Kampala Quality Primary School Playground.

    Rashid Kawawa and Idd Abdu Wahid joined the camp on day two, bringing the number of players currently at Cranes Paradise Hotel, Kisasi to 26.

    The duo took part in both the morning and evening session.

    It should be noted that players from KCCA FC and Vipers SC are yet to report with the latter preparation for CAF Champions League engagements. They will join the camp at a later date.

    Training will continue on Wednesday with two sessions at the same venue.

    Mugulusi happy to return to National Team fold

    Forward Isma Mugulusi is delighted to be part of the National Team set up again after overcoming a long term injury.

    The creative player has been out of action for more than a year after sustaining a knee injury.

    After a successful operation in January this year, Mugulusi has been undergoing a recovery process to gain his full fitness.

    Currently part of the Uganda Cranes team preparing for African Nations Championship Qualifiers, the soft spoken forward indicates he is ready to play again.

    “I thank the Almighty Allah for enabling me to return to my feet. I had a set back of a long-term injury but I managed to go through it mentally and physically and happy to be part of the National Team again.” He said.

    Mugulusi was part of the Uganda U20 National Team that reached the final of the 2021 U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

    Uganda Cranes began preparations for the forthcoming TotalEnergies African Nations Championship Qualifiers on Monday.

    The team entered residential camp at Cranes Paradise Hotel, Kisasi and later had a training session at Kampala Quality Primary School Playground.

    Coach Milutin Sredojevic alias Micho indicated the opening days will be about getting players to the best fitness levels.

    “We have held our first training session and it is important for us to start very early. Given the fact that we are in off season, we need to lift the fitness levels of players so that by the time we play, they are in perfect shape.”

    The Coach also indicated that the team will later have friendly matches.

    “We shall continue training up to 15th August and then get some friendly matches to continue gauging the progress of the team.”

    Uganda will play the winner between Somalia and Tanzania at the final qualification hurdle.

    The first leg will take place between 26th -28th August while Uganda will host the return leg on 3rd September at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.

    Uganda is seeking to play at the final tournament for a sixth time have featured in the previous five editions (2011, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020).

    FUFA partners with UEFA to organise football Fitness course

    FUFA has partnered with UEFA through the UEFA Assist Programme to organise a 5-day football fitness course that will take place at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru from 8th-12th August 2022.

    The course will be conducted by UEFA Fitness4Football Coordinator Paul D. Balsom (Dr Med. Sci) from Sweden.

    The course is tailored to be Level I of the progressive structure of two other levels (level 2 and 3) that will be developed later and with progressive requirements.

    It will be aattended by suitable candidates from clubs in the 1st and 2nd division (Uganda Premier League and FUFA Big League).

    At end of the course, each participant will be awarded a FUFA Level I Football Fitness Certificate and qualify as Fitness coaches for a FUFA License.

    FUFA has set requirements for this level as here under;

    1. Minimum O’ Level Certificate of Education.
    2. Must be able to listen, read and write in the language of course instruction.
    3. Playing experience and football knowledge is an added advantage.
    4. Must be attached to a club or field support role like Local trainer of trainers.
    5. Must be physically fit to attend course practical sessions.

    Suitable candidates should be submitted to development@fufauganda.com by 17:00 on 31st July 2022. Club CEOs have been provided with the necessary details. No submission shall be accepted beyond that date.

    About the Instructor 

    Paul D Balsom is a UEFA Pro License coach and Head of UEFA’s Fitness4Football advisory group.

    He graduated from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm with a PhD (Dr. med sci) in 1996, which focused on The Physiology of Intermittent Exercise. For the last 25 years, he has provided best practice performance enhancing scientific support solutions in professional football, at both club and national team (Sweden) level, developing the physical/fitness aspect of team performance in order to gain a competitive advantage.

    As Performance Manager with the Swedish National team, he has attended 6 consecutive UEFA Euro final tournaments and 3 World Cup final tournaments. Between 2008 and 2021, Paul was part of the backroom staff at Leicester City F.C. and in 2016, was Head of Sports Science and Performance Analysis when they became only the 6th team to win the English Premier League at 5000/1 outsiders.

    In 2017, Paul was also appointed Head of Performance Innovation at the King Power owned football club OH Leuven who, in 2020, were promoted to the top 1A league in Belgium.

    In addition to his current roles at the Swedish Football Association and UEFA, Paul also works as a Performance Consultant for Tigres UANL in Mexico.
