    25 CAF A coaches take part in 24-hour refresher Course

    Coaches to be issued with 3 year operational License by FUFA.

    Twenty five (25) coaches at CAF A level will complete the mandatory 24 hour refresher course on Monday 11th, July 2022 at Philip Omondi Stadium Lugogo.


    The coaches who will later be issued with a 3 year coaching license by FUFA started the refresher course on Friday at MUBS Nakawa before resuming today after a one day break for Eid Adhua Celebrations.

    The three day course has seen coaches undergo 8 hours per day under the guidance of CAF Instructors Jackson Nyiima, Livingstone Kyambadde and Mujib Kasule.

    On Monday, the coaches will have practical sessions starting Midday at Philip Omondi Stadium, Lugogo.

    I am delighted that FUFA together with Uganda Football Coaches Association are holding a series of refresher courses for CAF Coaching Diploma holders. We have started with Diploma A Coaches.

    This is inline with CAF Coaching Convention to which FUFA is a full member after fulfilling the mandatory 8 key criteria and holding the first CAF B Diploma course between March and May 2022.

    These refresher courses are aimed at keeping coaches up-to-date and stimulating development as per CAF Coaching Convention).

    At the end of the refresher course, each individual will be registered in the FUFA online system under the new Coaching Database using FIFA Connect System.

    The Coaches will be issued a 3 year Coaching License.

    At the 26th FUFA EXCO meeting, it was decided that only coaches issued with this 3 year license shall be eligible for FUFA Bench Permit in all FUFA competitions.

    Fresh graduates from recently completed or currently running CAF Diploma courses shall automatically be eligible for a 3 year license as well that will be issued upon their successful application process.

    Notice: 98th FUFA Ordinary General Assembly date, venue confirmed

    FUFA CEO Edgar Watson has confirmed the date and venue for the 98th FUFA Ordinary General Assembly.

    In a Notice to all stakeholders, FUFA CEO confirmed the Ordinary General Assembly willl be held on Saturday 15th October 2022 at Acholi Inn, Gulu City (Northern Regional Football Association).

    ‘Notice is hereby given to all FUFA Members, Delegates and stakeholders that the 98th FUFA Ordinary General Assembly shall be held on Saturday 15th October 2022 at Acholi Inn Hotel in Gulu City- Northern Region starting 9:30am.’’ Reads the notice.

    The Assembly is hosted on a rotational basis with each of the eight regions of FUFA given an opportunity upon a decision by the FUFA Executive Committee.

    About the Ordinary FUFA General Assembly

    The Ordinary FUFA General Assembly is the supreme and legislative body of football in Uganda, comprised of 34 members (Associations) that are represented by 88 delegates.

    The Assembly takes place annually where delegates convene and review activities carried out in the previous twelve months plus planning for the future.

    According to Article 21 (2) of the FUFA Statutes and Regulations, the FUFA President conducts business at the General Assembly in compliance with the standing orders.

    Some of the key areas of address in the FUFA Ordinary General Assembly include activity report, financial statements, approval of budgets, admission of new Members and dismissing of members among others.

    Prior to the Ordinary FUFA General Assembly, all Member Associations convene independent annual Assembles in accordance with the FUFA Statutes.

    This allows resolutions and reports from Members Associations to be agreed on before they are presented in the FUFA General Assembly for discussions.

    End of the road for Crested Cranes at WAFCON after drawing against Burkina Faso

    Uganda’s journey at the 2022 TotalEnergies Women Africa Cup of Nations agonizingly came to an end on Friday following a draw against Burkina Faso.

    In the game played at the Mohammed V Stadium, Casablanca, Crested Cranes took the lead twice but could only settle for a point.

    Margret Kunihira and Sandra Nabweteme scored a goal each in rge opening stanza but the Burkinabes responded through Adama Congo and Naomie Kabre.

    Coach George Lutalo made three changes to the team that had started against Morocco with Daisy Nakaziro starting in goal ahead of captain Ruth Aturo who was ruled out due to illness.

    The other changes saw Aisha Nantongo return to the back line given the fact that Sumaya Komuntale was suspended while Kunihira started ahead of Rita Kivumbi.

    Uganda started the better side taking the lead in the 7th minute finishing from close range after a neat pass by Shamirah Nalugya.

    Burkina Faso were reduced to ten players with defender Madinatou Rouamba sent off for fouling Fauzia Najjemba in the 17th minute.

    Despite the numerical advantage, the Burkinabes remained composed and leveled matters with Congo sending a low drive past goalkeeper Nakaziro.

    Nabweteme restored parity moments later but Burkina Faso once again fought back to find the equalizer through Kabre.

    The second half produced several scoring opportunities but neither of two teams able to add a goal.

    Kunihira, Nakaziro named in Starting XI to face Burkina Faso

    Crested Cranes head coach George Lutalo has rang changes in the team that will face Burkina Faso on Friday at the ongoing TotalEnergies Women Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

    The gaffer has made three changes from the team that started against Morocco on Tuesday.

    Winger Margret Kunihira and goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro have made their first appearance at the tournament.

    Kunihira starts on the right wing joining Fazila Ikwaput and Fauzia Najjemba up front in three-player attack.

    Therefore this means Ikwaput who played on the left wing against Morocco will shift to the centre with Najjemba drifting to the left.

    Nakaziro starts in goal ahead of skipper Ruth Aturo who is sick and ruled out of the game . The other changes see Aisha Nantongo return to the starting XI to partner Margaret Namirimu at the heart of defence.

    Versatile player Phiona Nabbumba who played as a makeshift centre back against Morocco will this time move to the right back position with Asia Nakibuuka moving to the left to replace Sumaya Komuntale who is suspended.

    With Yudaya Nakayenze and Hasifah Nassuna still sidelined due to illness, the midfield is maintained with Joan Nabirye, Shamirah Nalugya and Sandra Nabweteme.

    Crested Cranes duo nominated in CAF Awards 2022

    Crested Cranes duo of Fauzia Najjemba and Fazila Ikwaput has on Wednesday earned nominations in the prestigious CAF Awards 2022.

    CAF revealed the shortlists on Wednesday with Najjemba and Ikwaput getting nominated in the CAF Young Player of the Year (Women) and CAF African Women Footballer of the year categories respectively.

    Ikwaput made a shortlist that has 30 players, becoming the first Ugandan female footballer to earn this nomination.

    Last year, Ikwaput guided Lady Doves FC to their first League title where she finished both as the top scorer and MVP.

    She would go on to help the club finish third in the inaugural CECAFA Regional Qualifiers with four goals to her name.

    Last season, she was a joint top scorer in the FUFA Women Super League with 16 goals same as Hasifah Nassuna of UCU Lady Cardinals.

    Ikwaput was influential as Uganda clinched the 2022 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship, scoring 6 goals and ending as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

    Najjemba on the other hand made her name at the 2022 CECAFA U20 Women’s Championship where she finished as top scorer with 12 goals in six games.

    At the start of this year, she moved to BIIK Shymkent in Kazakhstan where she has already scored 9 goals and registered 6 assists.

    Beach Soccer: Sand Cranes Provisional Squad for Comoros encounter named

    Uganda National Beach Soccer Team head coach Salim Jamal Muwonge has named a provisional squad that will commence preparations for the forthcoming Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers against Comoros.

    The coach on Tuesday revealed a squad comprised of 20 players, largely maintaining the core that has been part of the team.

    The Coach believes the team summoned will be able to fulfill the target of qualifying back to the continental stage.

    “Our target is to get back to the final tournament and I am confident the players summoned will help in executing the assignment before us. We have enough time to prepare for the two games and hoping for the very best.” He said.

    The team will enter residential camp at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru later today.

    The first leg will be played between 22nd-24th July in Comoros while the return leg will happen between 5th-7th August in Uganda with the winner on aggregate qualifying to the final tournament.

    The 2022 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations will be held from 21st to 30th October in Maputo, Mozambique.

    Uganda is seeking to return to the final tournament for the second successive time having played at the 2021 edition in Senegal where the team reached the semifinals.

    WAFCON 2022: Crested Cranes fall to hosts Morocco in second group game

    Crested Cranes suffered yet another disappointing result, falling to hosts Morocco in the second group A game played on Tuesday in Rabat.

    Despite a spirited performance, the Crested Cranes fell 3-1 to Morocco at Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.

    She was also sent off in the second half for a second bookable offence.

    The Moroccans for their goals through Rosella Ayane and Ghizlane Chebbak both penalties while the other came from defender El Chad Nesyrine.

    Coach George Lutalo made four changes to the team that started against Senegal with Hasifah Nassuna and Yudaya Nakayenze ruled out due to illness. Their places were taken by Sandra Nabweteme and Margaret Namirimu respectively.

    The other changes saw Phionah Nabbumba start as a make shift defender in place of Aisha Nantongo while Fazila Ikwaput started ahead of Viola Nambi.

    The hosts opened the scores in the 14th minute with Ayane converting from the spot after referee awarded a penalty. Namirimu was adjudged to have fouled Ayane in the area.

    Komuntale found the equalizer in the 32nd minute when Shamirah Nalugya won a foul on the right wing. She curled the ball to the near post with the goalkeeper arriving late.

    In the second half, Morocco yet again scored from a set piece with El Chad heading home Chebbak’s free kick before the latter converted from the spot nine minutes from time.

    Uganda will now shift focus to the final group game against Burkina Faso on Friday in Casablanca.

    The coach has made four changes from the team that started in the 2-0 loss to Senegal on Sunday.

    Centre back Yudaya Nakayenze and midfielder Hasifah Nassuna are ruled out of the game due to illness.

    The other change sees Aisha Nantongo getting to the bench with Margaret Namirimu handed a starting slot.

    In the absence of Nakayenze, midfielder Phionah Nabbumba starts as a make shift centre back, partnering her teammate Namirimu.

    Former Cranes midfielder Ochan among coaches enrolling for CAF C in Kabale

    Former Uganda Cranes midfielder Patrick Ochan is among coaches that have enrolled for CAF C Coaching course currently ongoing at Town View Hotel in Kabale town.

    The course organized by Ham Sports Agency officially got underway on Monday attracting a total of 30 coaches and will run up to 4th August.

    This is the first ever CAF C Coaching Course to be organised in Western Region. The same is currently ongoing in Kampala region.

    CAF Coaching Instructor Livingstone Kyambadde is the tutor at the month-long course with FUFA Human Resource and Capacity Building Manager Jackson Nyiima who is also an instructor expected to offer guidance on how to make reports and presentations later on.

    Besides Ochan, former Mbarara City midfielder who recently retired, Zaidi Byekwaso has also enrolled for this course. The other notable name is Geoffrey Stephen Pritchard the former coach of Kigezi HomeBoyz FC.

    Frank Ankunzire, a FUFA Executive Committee Member representing Western Region lauded FUFA for extending such courses to the region and believes this is a giant step in developing football.

    “As Western Region, we are grateful to FUFA for accepting our request of having this coaching course here. I believe this is an opportunity to equip coaches in the region with modern coaching knowledge that will be passed on to the players. In the long run, this will give us good players thus developing football in this region.” He said.

    Ankuzire also highlighted the dire need for financial support to the region in terms of capacity building.

    “We would like to have these courses coming frequently but because of financial constraints, the region ends up foregoing them. I ask Government to offer support to us because many youth would be employed if they become coaches.” Added Ankunzire.

    2022 FUFA Drum preparations start with capacity building course for province administrators

    Preparations for the forthcoming FUFA Drum are in high gear with both the Federation and the participating provinces drawing strategies ahead of the new edition.

    With the tournament returning for the first time after a two-year hiatus, FUFA thought it wise to have a capacity building workshop for administrators across the 16 provinces.

    It is upon this background that a three-day Football Administration and Management Course (FAMACO) which started on Monday at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru has been organized.

    Ronnie Kalema, a FUFA Executive Committee member who is also in charge of the Football development docket believes this is a right step in attempting to spread professionalism.

    “After two years of no action due to COVID-19, we thought it wise to take officials through a number of management and governance aspects because this will help in the proper running of the tournament,” he said before adding, “We also want to show them that football is business and therefore if you organize your province well, rally fans to come in numbers, sponsors and partners will come on board.”

    Kalema is one of the facilitators at the workshop. Others include FUFA Deputy CEO-Football, Decolas Kiiza, FUFA Education Officer, Jackson Nyiimaand FUFA Football Development Director, Ali Mwebe.

    Andrew Kaweesa, the Chairperson Buganda Football Association believes this was an important step made by FUFA to equip the province administrators with knowledge before kickoff.

    “I must say we are learning a lot from here. If we all go and put into practice what is being taught, we will have a great tournament,” he said.

    Jamal Ngoobi, the Chairman Bukedi Province also shares similar sentiments and hopes FUFA can such interventions frequently.

    The first group of provinces that is currently in Njeru includes Teso, Karamoja, Bugisu, Bukedi, Sebei, Busoga, Buganda and Kampala.

    The remaining 8 will also go through the same process for three days, starting Thursday.

    The third edition of the FUFA Drum is expected to kickoff on Saturday, 30th July.

    Acholi are the reigning Champions having won the 2019 edition.

    Crested Cranes will return to action on Tuesday against hosts Morocco seeking for redress from the opening game results.

    Despite a spirited performance against Senegal, Uganda lost 2-0 on Sunday and thus Tuesday’s encounter comes as a make or a break affair.

    Coach George Lutalo is aware of what is at stake and he is convinced his charges will polish up the mistakes made in the game against Senegal.

    “We come into this game on the back of a loss. Having looked at our performance, we have tried to rectify our mistakes and hope for improvement against hosts Morocco. It is a tough game for us but we must find a good result to keep our dreams alive.” He said in the pre match press briefing.

    Captain, Ruth Aturo shares similar sentiments indicating the players are still optimistic and ready to give full commitment against Morocco.

    “We have kept our heads high and not reading so much into the loss against Senegal. Definitely, there were mistakes committed and all we want is to improve and make sure we get better against Morocco.”

    In the other group A game, Burkina Faso will face Senegal at the same venue.

    Grassroot football is a key component in the development of the game because it involves mass participation and nurturing of talents. It is therefore important to have football development right from the smallest sphere in order to realize professionalism.

    It is upon this background that FUFA Executive Committee Member Rogers Mulindwa thought it wise to return to Luwero, his cradle place and help in promoting and developing football.

    FUFA 1st Vice President, Justus Mugisha was the guest of honour at the one day retreat held at Mulindwa’s residence in Wakiso with Luwero District Football Association Executive Committee attending.

    Mugisha lauded Luwero DFA for the efforts made towards developing grassroot football, indicating this is the way to go.

    “I thank Rogers Mulindwa who has seen it fit to invite FUFA and look at the challenges that the DFA is facing. I have been privy to the resolutions made and also the strategic plan made to develop football in the region,” he stated.

    “We have also agreed with them that if they find it fit to be the first DFA to own a football pitch and in my capacity, I have pledged UGX 5M whenever they get land available to set up such a facility.” Mugisha added.

    Mulindwa indicated it was necessary to have this retreat and know the challenges that the DFA is facing.

    “As a leader you have go keep your ear to the ground and for sometime I have been getting reports and I decided to invite the football leaders in Luwero to find solutions to some biting challenges. Some of them were administrative, others are to with governance and financial management and I am delighted that we have covered a lot and very optimistic Luwero will get better.” He indicated.

    Facilitators included Rogers Byamukama, Samuel Mpiima (both FUFA EXCO Members).

    Uganda started their expedition at the TotalEnergies Women Africa Cup of Nations on a sloppy note, falling to Senegal on Sunday.

    In the game played at Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex, Rabat Senegal scored a goal in either half.

    Diakite Ndeye and Nguenar Ndiaye scored the goals for the West African side.

    The opening goal came in the 39th minute with Ndeye converting from the spot after Aisha Nantongo fouled in the box.

    Five minutes after restart, Senegal doubled their advantage with Ndiaye capitalizing on a mistake by defender Yudaya Nakayenze.

    Coach Lutalo maintained the team that had started against Zambia in a friendly on Tuesday.

    The closest Uganda to scoring in the first half was when Najjemba headed from Violah Bambi’s corner kick delivery but she was unlucky with her effort hitting the base of the goal post.

    At the start of the second half coach Lutalo made changes bringing on Fazila Ikwaput and Phiona Nabbumba for Viola Nambi and Hasifah Nassuna.

    There was another change with Sandra Nabweteme replacing Shamirah Nalugya.

    Nabbumba almost scored when she shot from far but her strike hit the upright.

    Uganda kept surging forward and was the better side in the second stanza.

    Ikwaput had a glorious effort when she went through on goal but failed to fire the ball beyond the goalkeeper.

    The Crested Cranes will shift focus to Tuesday’s game against hosts Morocco.

    Crested Cranes Head Coach George Lutalo has named the starting XI that will face Senegal in Uganda’s first game at the 2022 TotalEnergies Women Africa Cup of Nations.

    The gaffer has maintained the team that started and won 5-0 against Zambia in a practice game on Tuesday.

    Skipper Ruth Aturo starts in goal with Asia Nakibuuka and Sumaya Komuntale playing as the right back and left back respectively.

    Aisha Nantongo partners Yudaya Nakayenze at the heart of defence.

    In a 4-3-3 system, the midfield trio has Joan Nabirye deployed as the holding midfielder.

    Shamirah Nalugya and Hasifah Nassuna will play in the advance roles.

    Violah Nambi who bagged a brace against Zambia on her debut starts on the right wing while Fauzia Najjemba takes charge of the left flank with Rita Kivumbi leading the line.

    The third edition of the FUFA Drum has come with exciting additions and key among them is the inclusion of the Women’s competition.

    The development was confirmed by FUFA President, Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim during the launch of the 2022 edition.

    “The FUFA Drum in its third edition will also have the Women’s version. This year, we shall make a shorter version and this will be played according to the 8 FUFA Regions converging in one venue. But in future we shall have the Women competing in their respective provinces of region.” He confirmed.

    The FUFA Drum is back after two years of no action due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The third edition was launched on Wednesday at FUFA Complex, Mengo.

    FUFA President Hon. Magogo Moses Hassim officially launched the return of the coted tournament and also conducted the draws alongside FUFA EXCO Member, Rogers Byamukama who is also the FUFA Drum Organizing Committee Chairman and John Paul Ssemakula, Nile Breweries Connections Manager.

    The FUFA President indicated it is important to have the tournament return because of the values attached to it.

    “It is an exciting moment that the FUFA Drum is back. Football speaks to the language of passion and we are proud of ancestry, culture and identity. This tournament gives us an opportunity to be proud of where we come from and the first two editions proved it,” he said before adding, “I remember when Buganda played Acholi at Pece Stadium and Ekitiibwa kya Buganda was played, it meant a lot in re-uniting the people.”

    He also stated that the tournament comes with many values attached including boosting the economy, promoting sports tourism and giving people a sense of belonging among others.

    The President also confirmed that all FUFA Drum games this year will be broadcast live on FUFA TV.

    “We are proud to announce that all the games this year will be telecast live on FUFA TV. This will definitely help us to increase on the visibility of the tournament and people living in the diaspora have the chance to watch their respective provinces in action.”

    Byamukama equally was delighted for the return of the FUFA Drum indicating this is an opportunity to continue with the theme of celebrating ancestry and that explains why FUFA had to wait for full opening of the economy.

    “We are here to launch the third edition and definitely coming back after two years means something bigger and better. The hallmark of the FUFA Drum is passion and celebrating ancestry and thus we did not want to play without fans. Now that the economy is fully open, we expect to have the same adrenaline, enthusiasm and passion expressed in the previous editions.” He indicated.

    John Paul Ssemakula, the Nile Breweries Connections Manager highlighted the importance of this tournament indicating it falls directly in line with their vision of culture.

    Unlike the previous editions that that were played in groups, this year’s tournament will be played on a knockout basis.

    The 2022 Format

    Format shortened and will start with round of 16, played home and away

    Winners on aggregate will advance to the quarterfinals where games will also be played on a home and away basis.

    The Quarterfinal winners shall then be pooled in one group and play at a central venue in a round robin format.

    The top two after the round robin format will progress and play the final while the bottom two will play the third place playoff.

    Uganda Women’s National Football Team dispatched Zambia on Tuesday in a practice game as preparations for the TotalEnergies Women Africa Cup of Nations 22 continue.

    The Crested Cranes showed no mercy against the Copper Queens, winning 5-0 in the game played at Granda Stade de Marrakesh.

    Viola Nambi who plies her trade with Dornbirn in Austria orchestrated the damaged on Zambia, bagging a brace.

    Fauzia Najjemba and Rita Kivumbi who are also foreign based, playing at BIIK Shymkent and Mallbackens IF in Kazakhstan and Sweden respectively came through with a goal each before second half substitute Fazila Ikwaput put the icing on the cake minutes after coming on.

    Fauzia Najjemba scored one of the goals for Uganda against Zambia.

    Kivumbi broke the deadlock in the 37th minute before Nambi and Najjemba fired home in quick succession to give Uganda a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into the break.

    The dominance continued even after recess with Nambi getting Uganda’s fourth and her second on the day in the 57th minute.

    Coach Lutalo rang changes bringing on Ikwaput, Lillian Mutuuzo and Phiona Nabbumba for Najjemba, Nambi and Hasifah Nassuna in that order.

    There were further changes with Sheebah Zalwango and Sandra Nabweteme replacing Shamirah Nalugya and Kivumbi respectively.

    The win gives Uganda momentum going into the first group A game against Senegal on Sunday in Rabat.

    The same group has hosts Morocco and Burkina Faso who will face off a day earlier in the opening game of the tournament.
