  • A NEW DAWN – It is Live Television time for Ugandan Sports

A NEW DAWN – It is Live Television time for Ugandan Sports

FUFA is in advanced stages of launching the FUFA TV that will primarily broadcast live Ugandan Sport.

It is therefore a great opportunity for creating a professional sports industry that will employ many youths and also generate resources for the Uganda sports spectrum.

Our objective is to grow TV audiences for Ugandan Sports which will create more commercial value of various sports brands.

There is also potential for broadcast revenues which are the proven biggest sources of funding for professional sports.

    The following are the Television Revenues elsewhere;

    1. FIFA generated 4.6bn USD from the 2018 FIFA World Cup
    2. UEFA generated 334m USD from the EUROs 2016
    3. CAF generated 20.1m USD from the AFCON 2019
    4. UEFA Generates about 3bn USD from the UEFA Champions League annually
    5. CAF generates about 12.5m USD from the CAF Champions League annually
    6. Tanzania FA Generates 6.5m USD from the Tanzanian Premier League annually
    7. FUFA Generates 0.6m USD from the Uganda Premier League annually

    Some revenues generated in football

With the arrival of WBS TV, the Uganda Music industry, that was occupied by the “kadongo kamu”, has since exponentially grown replacing foreign and particularly Congolese music.

The audiences grew from those attending shows to all villages, urban and the diaspora. The Ugandan middle class finally embraced Ugandan Music. Brands and stars were created and so were the jobs and the tax base.

Television content is created by activity, production and then airing. With the renaissance of the Ugandan music industry, many talents have been unearthed like singers, writers, producers, promoters, journalists etc. Many production houses have been created. Albeit, they still have the challenge that they cannot earn from TV but their brands have been built by TV to be able to earn from the shows (attendance).

The Music industry has succeeded with Ugandan Music content for the Ugandan market. Our vision is Ugandan Sports content for the Ugandan Market.

Unlike music, Live Sports Production is expensive. The local TVs have not been willing to invest in production and airing of live sports events because it was not making instant business sense. We ended up with video clips and news bytes.

Arua Hill players celebrate a goal in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. Uganda’s top flight league is broadcast on StarTimes

As FUFA, we have decided to take the bull by the horns, our vision is to create live sports action on TV for the local audience.

As we speak, the industry has built capacity to undertake live sports production and currently 2 Live Sports Production houses are able to produce live sports events.

It would even be better if we got 10 or more live production houses.

Elsewhere, every club in the English Premier League is a production house and it is a minimum club licensing requirement.

    Inside a modern Television Studio

In 2008 GTV was paying 20,000 USD per game to a South African Company to carry persons and equipment from South Africa every selected TV match.

Both SuperSport and Azam, have imported production personnel and equipment to produce the Ugandan League. Now, with the local production capacity, this has served as import substitution, affordable and providing more employment opportunities.

Ugandan runners will start enjoying their efforts being relayed live on Sanyu TV after Next Media Services signed a deal with Uganda Athletics Federation

Despite the growth of the production capacity, airing live sports events has not been found lucrative by the various existing television houses.

The arrival of the FUFA TV will add to what is already existing by Sanyuka, UBC and the other channels that are airing Live Ugandan Sport.

I can see light at the end of the tunnel. Advertisers will have no excuse but to embrace financing Ugandan Sports.

Pay TVs will have no option but to buy rights and Ugandans will now consume Live Ugandan Sports right from their households, smartphones, work places and offices by paying nominal fees, not moving distances and spending time. Players and coaches will be handsomely paid and on time and investors in club football will start to get return on investment.

Boxing is the new kid on the block with strides made by Uganda Boxing Federation to take the sport on TV.

Jobs are going to be created for Cameramen, Commentators, Analysts, club staff and Service providers.
The Taxman will be happy too.

Our next duty as sports is to create quality athletes and competitions that are organised in good facilities. We should be able to understand the industry and make the right commercial decisions.
Let us not commit until we are sure as there is a major industry shift that is coming soon.

Action in the FUFA Women Super League returns this weekend with Matchday two games spread across Saturday and Sunday.

With thrilling action witnessed in the opening Matchday, the five games coming this weekend promise to offer even better.

Saturday will have two games on card with defending Champions Lady Doves taking on wounded Uganda Martyrs WFC while UCU Lady Cardinals FC in Mukono will entertain new comers She Maroons FC.

Lady Doves were held to a goalless draw at home by new comers She Maroons and the ultimate target as they face Uganda Martyrs will be to pick maximum points.

Uganda Martyrs on the other hand suffered a 2-0 loss to She Corporate and coach Rogers Nkugwa will be expecting reaction from his charges in Masindi.

In Mukono, UCU Lady Cardinals will be in bouyant mood going into Saturday’s fixture given the fact they secured a hard fought 1-0 away in Soroti last week.

Hasifa Nassuna scored the lone goal against Olila last week.

However, in She Maroons, they face a potential banana skin. The new comers are a no -push and if a point off Lady Doves from last weekend is anything to go by, UCU Lady Cardinals will need to dig deep.

The other games will come on Sunday with Olila High School hosting Rines WFC at Soroti Stadium.

Kampala Queens make the long trip to Fort Portal City hoping to make quick amends following their disappointing start to the season.

Kampala Queens lost to Kawempe Muslim on Matchday One.

The Capital City Queens succumbed to a 2-0 home loss to Kawempe Muslim and coach Hamza Lutalo who was in charge of his first game promised to rectify the mistakes made.

“We made a couple of errors against Kawempe Muslim but we have worked on them prior to Sunday’s game. The target is definitely to pick maximum points and keep improving in every game.” He said.

Tooro Queens on the other hand picked a point on the road against Rines WFC and will be happy to welcome back defender Sumaya Komuntale to the team after her exploits with the Uganda U20 Women’s National Team.

She Corporate and Kawempe Muslim Ladies who won their opening fixtures with an identical score of 2-0 face off in Nakawa in arguably the biggest game of the weekend.

Uganda U20 Women’s National Team will look to overturn the first leg loss to Ghana as the two teams face off in the return leg of the fourth round of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers on Saturday in Cape Coast.

The Black Princesses nicked a 2-1 win at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende last month and the winner on aggregate will advance to the next stage to face Ethiopia who eliminated Tanzania 2-1 on aggregate.

Coach Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi is confident the team is in perfect shape and ready to turn the tables going into Saturday’s encounter.

    Coach Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi

“We are ready and the players are physically and mentally okay. We have tried to motivate them in the last few days and also worked on the mistakes committed in the first leg,” he said before adding.

“We made analysis of the first game and knew where we went wrong. Those are the areas we have put emphasis in trying and I’m confident we can get a good result to send us to the next level.”

The team I boosted with the return of striker Juliet Nalukenge who missed the first leg through illness.

The gaffer confides that Nalukenge’s availability could be key in pursuit for goals give the fact that Uganda needs to score to stand any chance.

Captain Fauzia Najjemba who scored the consolation in the first leg is also optimistic that Uganda has the ability to eliminate Ghana on the road.

“It was disappointing that we couldn’t win at home but the result is now behind us. We know what is required and definitely we shall give our best on Saturday.”

    All games kickoff at 3:00PM

The 2021/22 FUFA Women Super League will officially get underway this weekend with four games on card for Matchday one.

8 of the 10 teams will be in action on Sunday with games spread across the country. Only Kampala Queens FC and Kawempe Muslim WFC will not be in action given the number of players on the U20 Women’s National Team. They will however, face off on Wednesday, 9th February.

There is excitement and high anticipation from almost every team given the recruitments made in a bid to bolster their respective squads and all are hoping for the best run in the League.

Kawempe Muslim players celebrate one of their goals against Kampala Queens last season.

Defending Champions Lady Doves FC start their title defence at home to new comers and FUFA Women Elite League Champions, She Maroons and the former are hoping for a perfect start.

Under the stewardship of coach Fred Musiime, The Believers will definitely be one of the teams to contend for this year’s Championship.

Lady Doves players celebrating after winning the trophy.

However, their opening game is a stern test from The Prison side who despite losing midfielder and last season’s MVP Joan Naggayi are a hard nut to crack.

Joan Naggayi (with the ball) left She Maroons FC. She was named the best player last season.

Coach Alex Sida has largely maintained the squad that he had last season and will hope to make an impact in the top tier division on their first time of asking.

In Soroti, Olila High School WFC welcome UCU Lady Cardinals FC. The two teams were in the same group last season with the latter knicking a hard fought 1-0 win.

Action between UCU Lady Cardinals and Olila High School.

Olila High School go into Sunday’s clash without defenders Grace Aluka and Bira Nadunga who are with the Uganda U20 Women’s National Team in Ghana.

Elsewhere, She Corporate FC entertain Uganda Martyrs High School WFC in Nakawa. The Sharks despite losing key players like Vanessa Karungi and Bridget Nabisaalu still look formidable on paper and one of the teams to contend for the title.

Uganda Martyrs have equally lost a host of players including the quartet of Daphine Nyayenga, Harima Kanyago, Gloria Namugerwa and Spencer Nakacwa who joined Lady Doves FC during their CAF Champions League expedition.

Uganda Martyrs High School players celebrate their goal.

However, coach Rogers Nkugwa has always looked to their Junior Team for replacements over the years and he will definitely try to give rookies a chance to show their adeptness.

Rines WFC have bounced back to top flight football with a bang and made some marquee signings including left footed winger Amina Nababi and forward Anita Ainembabazi from She Makerere and Tooro Queens respectively.

The Wakiso based outfit will be hoping for a perfect start at home as they face Tooro Queens.

It should be noted that this season will be played in a block league format with ten teams playing on a home and away basis.

Many laws of the game were amended for the 2021/2022 season, we also had a lot of challenges in line with the positives picked in the first round thus applying the SWOT analysis to help us improve for the good of the game.’ Nsubuga remarked.

Nsubuga added that in this course they also viewed various action clips where they discussed together and also interpreted various laws as a group which encourages bonding amongst the whistlemen.

Crested Cranes to play at 2022 Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations

Uganda Senior Women’s National Football Team, the Crested Cranes will play at this year’s Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations following the withdrawal of Kenya.

The Crested Cranes who entered camp this week were supposed to face Kenya in the last qualifying stage next month.

It should be noted that Crested Cranes were slated to face off with Harambe Starlets next month with the first leg scheduled for 17th February and the return leg coming on 23rd February.

However, communication from CAF addressed to FUFA confirmed the withdrawal of Kenya from the Qualifiers.

“We regret to inform you that we have just received Kenya FA’s correspondence informing us of their withdrawal from Women AFCON- Morocco 2022,” reads the statement.

“Consequently, matches 45 and 46 are cancelled as well as the missions of all designated officials.” The statement further reads.

The development therefore means Uganda qualifies to the 2022 edition that will be held in August in Morocco.

“Uganda is automatically qualified to the next round of the competition.” the CAF Communication further reads.

This will be the second appearance for Crested Cranes at Africa Women Cup of Nations with the first coming in 2000.

Uganda eliminated Ethiopia at the first round of the 2022 Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers.

  • Nalukenge: We still have the ability to overturn the first leg deficit

Nalukenge: We still have the ability to overturn the first leg deficit

Striker Juliet Nalukenge believes Uganda U20 Women’s National Team still has the ability to bounce back and progress to the final round of the 2022 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers.

Uganda lost 2-1 in the first leg at St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende on Saturday last week but Nalukenge is optimistic they can go and win away in Accra.

“I still believe we can progress to the next round despite losing the first game,” said the lethal forward before adding, ” we committed some errors which affected us but we shall work on them and go into the return leg with belief.”

Nalukenge missed the first leg due to illness but she has since recovered and now part of the team.

The striker who plies her trade at Chrysomolia FC in Cyprus believes her return could be a of added value especially in search for goals.

“As a striker, my role is to score goals and what we need is to score goals in Ghana. I believe my addition gives the team boost and we shall work hard to make sure we get a good result.”

The return leg is slated for 4th February in Accra and the winner on aggregate between Uganda and Ghana will face either Ethiopia or Tanzania at the final qualifying phase.
