Relations: FUFA holds successful media engagement with sports reporters

FUFA has held yet another successful media engagement today with the members of the fourth estate building on what was organised in 2014 (Lugogo), 2017, 2018 (FUFA Technical Centre-Njeru) and 2019 (Imperial Royale).

Today’s event is the first of the quarterly meetings this year between the local soccer governing body and sports media, held at Jevine Hotel in Rubaga, Kampala on Tuesday, April 6, 2021.

L-R: FUFA 1st Vice President Justus Mugisha, FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo and FUFA Deputy CEO-Football Decolas Kiiza during the media interface at Jevine Hotel in Kampala

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo graced the interactive engagement also attended by 1st Vice President Justus Mugisha, FUFA Deputy CEO – Football Decolas Kiiza, Esther Musoke (Marketing Director) and Patrick Ntege (National Teams’ officer).

The FUFA Communications Director Ahmed Hussein was the event’s moderator.

Eng. Magogo hinted on the significance of the interface and FUFA’s progress since 2013 when he took over office, highlighting the success story in the eight (8) focus areas of FUFA.

    FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo

‘We thought it was very important to have an engagement with the media. We are open-minded. Since 2013, the game of football was still in recovery. By the time we came into administration, the game had moved to the point of take-off. For instance in 2013, there were only 8 employees of FUFA. Today, there are 60 employees. The national teams have improved a lot. There is a lot of improvement on quality of the human resource, communication and governance issues. The financial resources have increased from Shs 4 billion to over Shs 40 billion now. There is improved relationship with Government. No existing administration can operate without the Government. We need Government, there is a lot that we need from Government; CAF and FIFA, Uganda Olympic Committee, National Council of Sports (NCS), media and everybody working for the well being of football. Football needs an environment to develop’ noted Eng. Moses Magogo

L-R Esther Musoke, Patrick Ntege and Ahmed Hussein at Jevine Hotel, Rubaga

He hinted on the federation’s new technical agenda of rebuilding the Uganda Cranes with key priority of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The new system will cater for the rebuilding of the Uganda Cranes. Teams are built in cycles.

‘We are going to start a new cycle of rebuilding Uganda Cranes. It is indeed true that we have had a team. It is indeed true the team has performed. It is indeed true players get tired. Teams are built in cycles. We have taken consideration into budding young players. Some results might not be be good in the beginning. The rebuilding process will see some players retained in the Senior team’ noted Eng. Magogo

It is unfortunate that we did not qualify for the AFCON Finals for the third successive time. When i came into this office I said I do not want to be judged by qualification. I want to be judged by creating systems that help in the development of the game in the country. Even the best teams in the world win or lose some matches. What you do is go back and do analysis of the losses and react for the best football results.

‘There are five key factors that help in getting successful football results and these are; Infrastructure, Coaches, players, logistics and motivation’ added Magogo.

The FUFA President also declared his intentions to contest for another term of office.

    Reactions:

Abdallah Mubiru, Uganda Cranes Head Coach:

We give thanks to Almighty Lord for whatever we have achieved from the game. We had a game where I feel we were unlucky. The players put up a good fight. We tried our best in the game. We knew that even before the game, it would all end in Malawi. We are going back to the drawing board to play for the game away against Malawi. We have to select a better team to face Malawi.

    Denis Onyango, Uganda Cranes Captain:

I am very happy for the performance of the team. We lifted out tempo in the second half and created half chances. The introduction of Moses Waiswa and Ibrahim Orit pushed us further in the second half. We still needed this result. It is still in our hands. We need to do ourselves a favour. We need to play total football. We need to carry on the momentum. It is in our hands. We need and must qualify for AFCON finals.

Coach Mubiru is unfazed with the late arrival of the aforementioned players and indicates he has been in constant communication with them.

“We expected this. Most of them had games at their respective clubs on Sunday and that explains their late arrival. But we have been in constant communication with not only Onyango but even William Luwagga Kizito, Fahad Bayo and Timothy Awany who have also arrived today.”

Coach Abdallah Mubiru speaking the media in the pre-match press briefing.

The coach indicates that the team is in perfect shape for Wednesday’s encounter and aiming at getting maximum points.

“Everything we have tried to work on has been successful. The team is in good spirit, the players have been complying and responding well. Everyone is ready to face the task ahead of us. We are hoping for the best result in tomorrow’s game.

Mubiru insists that that game is not about him as an individual but rather an opportunity for Uganda to seal qualification to next year’s AFCON in Cameroon.

I don’t want to be selfish for this game to be entirely about me as a person. It is important for all of as a country. It is a dream for every Ugandan to see the team performs well and it will even be more important that we win and brighten our chances of qualifying for the third successive time.

Uganda Cranes Vice Captain Emmanuel Okwi indicates that the players are ready to fight for maximum results tomorrow.

Uganda Cranes assistant captain, Emmanuel Okwi (in red) speaking to the media.

“I have been lucky to be part of the last two occasions when we have managed to qualify for Africa Cup of Nations but I think the spirit has always been the same. We are ready as players and hoping for the very best.”
