All Uganda Cranes Players and Officials are bound by the National Teams’ Code of Conduct formulated by FUFA way back in 2017.
When players were invited for National team duty two weeks ago for the two AFCON Qualifier matches against Burkina Faso and Malawi; an air ticket was sent (for foreign based players) and a circular dated 4th March 2021 attached reminding players and officials of their obligations in line with National Teams’ Code of Conduct. This applied to the local based players as well.
Permission for players to miss from camp is only granted by the Head Coach, in this case, player Khalid Aucho had to follow the same procedure. Unfortunately, he did not.
The decision taken by FUFA against Aucho has no political inclination as claimed by the player and in some media outlets.
Selection of players for National team duty is on merit.
Aucho was dismissed from the current Cranes camp but may be considered for future National team engagements.
FUFA enforces regulations with all its players and officials of the Nine (9) National teams just like it was for goalkeeping coach Fred Kajoba who was asked to leave camp for breaching the Covid-19 regulations when Uganda Cranes was preparing for the CHAN tournament.
Finally, with the current Covid-19 situation, the health of the entire contingent in camp is paramount. All players were directed to enter camp upon arrival in the country to avoid any possible spread of the virus.
Khalid Aucho has been dismissed from Uganda Cranes Camp for failure to adhere to the National team Code of Conduct and FUFA Circular dated 4th March 2021.
Uganda Cranes is preparing for two crucial AFCON Qualifiers against Burkina Faso and Malawi due next week.
Aucho refused to board the official means of transport organised to pick him from Entebbe International Airport to the team camp at Cranes Paradise Hotel-Kisasi and has not even reported to camp since his arrival in the country.
The player’s club Misr El Makkasa and Egypt Football Association A have duly been informed about the decision and a return air ticket has been issued to him for his travel back to Egypt.

29th March 2021: Malawi Vs Uganda Cranes – Blantyre
Uganda Cranes Assistant Coach Abdallah Mubiru has hinted on the significance of the remaining two AFCON qualifiers; at home against Burkina Faso and away to Malawi.
In an exclusive interview with www.fufa.co.ug at FUFA House, Mubiru has given the detailed catalogue of preparations, the anticipated approach of these double headers, returning players to the team fold as he rallied the fans to support the team at all times.
Question:There are two important crucial games for Uganda Cranes against Burkina Faso (at home) and Malawi (away). How are the preparations going on?
Abdallah Mubiru: The preparations started one and a half weeks ago as we have been engaged in private talks with each of the summoned players to help with the psychology. On Thursday, 18th March 2021, the players available (those who play in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League) and some foreign based players will gather together. There will be technical sessions with on field preparations on Saturday and Sunday before the whole group converges on Monday, 22nd March 2021 to embark on the technical approach of the game.
Question:The home game against Burkina Faso is key in the qualification campaign with the second one coming up away to Malawi. How crucial are these two matches?
Abdallah Mubiru: Both matches (at home against Burkina Faso and away to Malawi) are very important for the country, team, players and us the technical team. All these two matches are equally important. Whereas we need to seal the AFCON slot at home, the most crucial game will be against Malawi. Under all circumstances, the away game will be key. We need to get results from both games. I know, it will not be an easy game against Burkina Faso but we have the potential to get the positive results. The winning spirit of playing at home needs to be back. This was not visible in the last game played against South Sudan.
Uganda Cranes head coach Abdallah Mubiru during the interview at FUFA Executive House in Mengo on Wednesday
Question:How important is it to seal qualification at home?
Abdallah Mubiru: Like I have already said, winning at home remains very pertinent and important. Winning against Burkina Faso at home will give us the confidence. This will motivate the team heading into the away contest against Malawi.
Question:There are a couple of returning players on the team who had spent some time away? How fast will these players gel with the rest?
Abdallah Mubiru: Players like Murushid Juuko, Yunus Ssentamu, Abdul Lumala, Mathias Kigonya, Daniel Isiagi and others are back in the National team set up after some period away. They have been part of the National team and happy to be back in the set up. This is good news to the players. Everyone knows the abilities of these players. The entire Uganda Cranes group has a special bond and has always had the spirit to work together.
Defender Murushid Juuko is one of the returning players to the national team foldL-R: Emmanuel Okwi, Joseph Benson Ochaya and Khalid Aucho celebrate a goal at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. Aucho is suspended for home game against Burkina Faso
Question:Midfielder Khalid Aucho was sent off in the last game against South Sudan in Nairobi. How is the technical team preparing to fill the void?
Abdallah Mubiru: It is very sad that midfielder Khalid Aucho will not play against Burkina Faso because of suspension. He is a good player for the team and we shall miss him. We have able replacements like Moses Waiswa, Tadeo Lwanga and others.
Question: How would you talk about the team’s transition process at this special timing?
Abdallah Mubiru: This is a very crucial moment for us in terms of qualification again to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
However it is a very sensitive time for management to keep that spirit of qualification. About the transition, that is how life goes. You reach a certain moment when you come and have to leave. This happens in football time over and again
Question:FUFA entrusted the local coaches for these two crucial TOTAL AFCON qualifiers. How easy will it be a task for you?
Abdallah Mubiru: We have the confidence of delivering at this stage. There is a general perception in Ugandans doubting their own. We have strengths and limitations. People have to judge us by the strengths and not the limitations. It is not about myself, Charles Mbabazi and Fred Kajoba, but it will be a case of serving the country diligently and protecting the job. We are not the best coaches on the land but it is an honour that we were picked to present the local legion. We shall do all the preparations but the results belong to the mercy of God.

There is an element of humanity and reality that we must accept. We achieved by qualifying for the first ever AFCON finals tournament. Even the best sprinter in the world started by crawling. For us as FUFA, it remains work in progress as country. As players, you are in the development stages. This should draw more appetite. FUFA has a very proper strategy to achieve the results. I want to appreciate the FUFA Youth development officer Bashir Mutyaba who has overseen that youth competitions are very organized. I also thank the clubs that have given the youth players a chance to play. Football is a process and not an event. The senior team has to play at the FIFA World Cup. Uganda Women Football Association (UWFA) has donated trophies and balls to FUFA regions across the country.
This happened during the International Women’s Day at FUFA Special Interest Group offices in Lungujja as special support to women football development for Regional Football Associations (RFA).

This is because football can only be developed from the grassroots. He asked the delegate to start identifying how the regional league will kick off during this pandemic era.
Chairperson of Uganda Women Football Association Margret Kubingi applauded FUFA for the gesture as the exercise empowers them to improve football development in line with FUFA’s Vision to be the number one football Nation in Africa on and off the field.
Kalibala hands over a ball and trophy to Margret KubingiIt was all excitement as UWFA donated balls and trophies to the regions
‘The distribution of these trophies and balls is timely for regions to start preparations for the new season. Some of the regions here did not even have a ball to train with for the new season. We thank FUFA for this great gesture towards football development. This support will really make a difference’ remarked Kubingi.
Ayub Khalifan stresses a point
Owk .Florence Nkulubo agreed with colleagues that many region football competitions are excited with the donation Uganda Women Football Association has made.
‘The regions now see returns of their contribution to Women football activities. Instead of restraining the little resources looking for competition trophies and buying your own balls to play with, it is a way of FUFA paying back’ noted Kitara Region women foot ball delegate Diana Kaboha.

The performance of the Uganda Hippos at the Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Mauritania is one of the indicators of progress and the consorted efforts made by FUFA .
Below is an excerpt of a story by published on the CAF Website.
Returning to the finals of Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2017 after a 39 years absence was just a remark that Ugandan football is living a prosperous period where it does not let any competition without leaving their mark.
Uganda was there at senior level (2017 and 2019 AFCON, 2018 and 2020 CHAN), and they did not also miss any youth competition (U-20 and U-17). This Saturday they will face Ghana in the final match of the Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, Mauritania 2021.
CAFOnline.com talked to former Uganda Cranes captain Edgar Watson, and to Rogers Mulindwa, member of the Ugandan Football Association (FUFA) Executive Committee, to provide answers to this Ugandan football spring that they hope will last long.
Asked about how they see this return to continental football front after last appearing in AFCON in 1978 when they reached the final against hosts Ghana, they cited several factors.
“We have had the chance to experience real stability in our football management lately,” explained Mulindwa, who is also the head of Uganda delegation in Mauritania.
ROGERS MULINDWA
“Current FUFA president Moses Magogo worked for several years as a member of the Executive Committee,” recalled Watson, former Cranes captain and in charge of youth football for several years, before holding the position of FUFA General Secretary General and Technical Director.
FUFA Executive Committee Member Rogers Mulindwa
Watson, who is also a member of CAF Technical Study Group during the ongoing Total U-20 AFCON, added that the launching of a junior league and inter-school competitions played a role in Ugandan football revival.
“A junior league was launched across the country, and all elite teams were obliged to have a junior team,” recalled the two leaders, noting that most of the squad that reached this Total U-20 AFCON final were selected from these youth teams.
“The inter-school competition throughout Uganda, providing sponsors to it, and substantial contribution from the state in recent years also made the difference,” added Mulindwa.
EDGAR WATSON “The government gave support to the Cranes, which gave FUFA the means to deal with development and youth football,” added Watson, highlighting the presence of three main sponsors alongside the Ugandan football governing body.
Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) CEO Edgar Watson addressing the media at FUFA House, Mengo.
“There are more ways to motivate national team players, and all young Ugandans dream of playing for national teams, hence there is fierce competition to reach these selections,” continued Watson.
FUFA has also set up committees for youth football development, with a priority for U-15s.
Watson underlined the contribution of CECAFA (Council of Football Associations of East Africa) in organizing zonal competitions as well in youth football (U-17 and U-20), among women than in senior categories.
“These competitions are interesting in many ways, since they allow young Ugandans to play against their counterparts in the zone and raise their level,” concluded Watson who played for Uganda between 1996 and 2004.
