Uganda Cranes played for close to 80 minutes with a man down following a straight red card to Ben Ocen to pick up a 1-1 draw with Cameroon. The Police FC Winger was adjudged to have elbowed his opponent.

From the resultant free-kick on 13 minutes, Cameroon took the lead with a headed goal by Captain Banga Bidjeme. However before that, Cranes had dominated the opening ten minutes in which Cameroon conceded three successive corner kicks but yielded nothing. Karim Watambala’s delivery of all the kicks put the Lions’ defence under pressure as they played for survival at time.

Uganda Cranes coach Johnathan McKinstry was never tempted to change his tactical formation even when his team played with a man less.  However as the first half grew older, striker Joseph Ssemujju was introduced for Watambala.

The Lions were by this time in control of the game but the central defence partnership of Paul Mbowa and Musitafa Mujuzi did all they could to avert any aerial danger.

    Mbowa clearing the ball

The second half so no substitutions made until midway of this period when a double change was introduced with Vianne Sekajugo and Bobosi Byaruhanga coming in for Ojera Joackiam and Captain Tonny Mawejje.

Ojera had ended the first half with a bandaged head following a clash of heads with his opponent. The stylish winger caused all sorts of problems for the Cameroonian backline as he also received cheers from the very few fans who attended the match.

    Ojera

Mujuzi took over the skipper’s role following the departure of experienced Mawejje whose captaincy had earlier witnessed Milton Karisa and Ojera Walter combine with a series of passes between the pair to hand Uganda the equaliser in the 70th minute.

Birthday boy Shaban Muhammad was introduced with 10 minutes to go for goal scorer Karisa.

    Disappointed fans

The disappointment of the Cameroonian fans was evident at the final whistle as Uganda held the home side (Intermediate Lions-) to a 1-1 draw in the opening match of the Pre- CHAN Mini Tournament at the Stade Ahamdaou Ahidjo- Yaounde. Zambia coach Milutin Sredojevic was alos in attendance as his faces his former employers on 4th January 2021.

It is obvious that the Lions’ fans want to see their team deliver on home soil especially during the 2020 Total CHAN Finals.

However they will have to keep their ears on ground as results similar to today’s game might still happen. There were extremely limited numbers of fans inside the stadium due to the prevailing Covid-19 conditions.

Cameron ended the match with a man down late in the game as Yarkan Abouri Basile was shown second yellow card.

Head coach Uganda Cranes Johnathan McKinstry

‘We said coming into this tournament was not about results. It was about taking on the host Nation and other top opposition. We wanted to come here and prepare for the main tournament.  We encouraged our players to be confident even when we lost one of them. We created chances even with a man less but the equalizer was well deserved.

Uganda Cranes will be out to put into action what they have mastered in the last ten days while in camp ahead of the Pre- CHAN Mini Tournament that kicks off on New Year’s Day in Yaounde, Cameroon.

The Cranes jetted into Cameroon on Tuesday morning this week and have since conducted two training sessions in the build up to tomorrow’s match against the Intermediate Lions (Name for the Cameroon National Football Team of home based players).

Both training sessions were held at one of the reserve grounds outside the Complex of the Main stadium that will host the Opening and Final match of the 2020 Total CHAN.

The organisers have managed to get clearance to use the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo for the Pre- CHAN Mini Tournament.

With 25 players at his disposal in camp and all injury free, Head Coach Johnathan McKinstry is taking every advantage to fine tune his Squad. However he knows the kind of test the three teams will provide to his players before they start negotiating the journey to Doula for the start of the CHAN Tournament.

    Johnathan McKinstry speaks out

Beauty about players playing in CHAN

The nature of winning or doing well at CHAN is that the number of players get opportunities to go and play outside of their domestic leagues.

About Uganda Cranes ahead of CHAN Finals

We just have to be in the best conditions because we know North African teams have not done well at CHAN but we expect them to be difficult opponents because their clubs go deeper and feature in CAF Champions League’ Morocco is one of Uganda’s three opponents in Group B of the CHAN Finals in Cameroon.

Uganda vs Cameroon in Friday’s opener of the Pre-CHAN Tournament

It is two contrasting preparations. Obviously for us we got the players a week ago but connectivity needs to be worked on. We also had the 5 rounds of action which our opponents have not had the league action since March but have played 4-5 buildup matches in the last three weeks.

  • CHAN Update: Uganda Cranes Goalkeeping coach released from Camp

CHAN Update: Uganda Cranes Goalkeeping coach released from Camp

FUFA has released one of the Uganda Cranes technical staff Fred Kajoba after not being able to observe the camp regulations at the Team Hotel in Kisasi which require all members of the contingent to follow the strict Covid-19 SOPs.

Kajoba will therefore not travel with the Uganda Cranes Contingent on Monday 28th December 2020 when they fly out of the country for a pre- CHAN tournament in Cameroon in preparation for the Total CHAN Finals that starts mid-January 2021.

A replacement for the goalkeeping coach will be named by the FUFA Executive in due course.

It is Our Game, It is Our Country.

  • FUFA recognizes staff with end of year Awards

FUFA recognizes staff with end of year Awards

The new normal due to Covid-19 pandemic affected the entire buzz usually attached to the FUFA end of Year parties.

However this did not stop the Human Resource, Marketing and Events Management team to throw something back to the staff with the simplicity it deserved under the prevailing environment.

It was an event that did not even give a glimmer of hope to talk about Goals, objectives, KPIs and measures for this year and later on for 2021.

Indeed 2020 (Twenie Twenie) caused so many amendments just like referees expect tem each year with the 17 Laws of the Game.

With FUFA staff, everything looked new right from the MCs of the day- rookies Ivan Kintu Bayige and Sarah Birungi who got blessings with a special prayer from the usual MC Ahmed Hussein at FUFA events.

‘The Almighty God, I put before you two young souls who are trying out this job for the first time but I pray that Ivan does not take a lot of soft drinks to disrupt our event. Sarah, I trust you will guide Ivan. God bless you’ said Hussein his brief prayer dedicated to the new MCs.

The prayer sent staff into loud laughter for reasons best known to them. Certainly Hussein knows!!!

It was an event full of humour and fun. The Staff was asked to say something special and unique that others did not know about them.

Strangely, some used different languages for introduction. It was a perfect way to enroll for lessons especially in Swahili with the tutorial sessions by FUFA Deputy CEO- Governance Sam Bakiika. FUFA Deputy CEO-Services tried his luck with French while the ‘newly formed SMAU’ was heavily represented by Jarvis Ahumuza and Ismail Asiimwe (Kigezi). The new normal is indeed creating opportunities for the young blood.

    Awards

The norm at FUFA is to recognize outstanding staff at the end of each year. However, it also came with new categories for the year 2020 (Twenie-Twenie).

Ismail Sebunya was recognized as the most committed staff to his job. He is part of the FUFA Support staff.

Referees Manager Egesa Samuel Wesonga and Marketing Director Esther Musoke were the best at time Management.

The best dressed Male on the night was FUFA Deputy CEO-Decolas Kiiza while two other staff Leticia Namutebi and Faridah Nasejje tied for the award of best dressed in the female category.

The best Female employee was Finance Director Julian Namuganga while the best Male employee accolade was given to the Communications Department and not an individual.

They were recognized for their exemplary work during the lockdown period under difficult conditions.

The top two awards come with a financial package of the 13th Month salary.

Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year

At Umuganda stadium, Rubavu – Rwanda

The youngsters of Uganda National football team of U17, the Cubs yet again smeared their name all over here in Rubavu, Rwanda when they crashed determined Ethiopia to a 3-0 loss.

This means Uganda qualifies to next round as as pool A toppers and will face second positioned team in pool B which is Djibouti in this regard.

Of course, Djibouti fought their lungs out to the final whistle to make it to the semi finals as their closest rival Rwanda were in the waiting-mode to learn their feat from of the results between Tanzania and Djibouti a game that ended in a one all draw seeing both of team through.

Uganda faces Djibouti knowing there is nothing like messing up or demeaning their opponent given the stature and the magnitude of the game if they are to qualify for U17 AFCON finals in Morocco next year.

They know a win against Djibouti sees them through to the finals and this will give Uganda a thousand reasons to treat this game as a game of their life with utmost attention and care.

Head coach Hamuza Lutalo is never scared though he will approach the opponents with respect but not fear them.

Lutalo disclosed; ‘We qualified with flying performances to semifinals but that alone doesn’t guarantee us a spot in 2021 AFCON finals, no, Djibouti’s game will and therefore its a game of our life and I have told players. We shall approach our opponent with due respect but not fear them. We shall have to attack and attack so as we score goals. Goals will make us qualify, there no other formula to that by the way.’

Uganda has by far been a free scoring team in the ongoing Caf U17 Zonal qualifiers so far netting eight and conceding none in the two group matches they played.

The 5-0 against Kenya and then beating Ethiopia 3-0.

Djibouti though, drew both games 0-0 against Rwanda in their first group game and then a one all draw against Tanzania.

Uganda has a rich stand against their compatriots Djibouti.

In 2018 in AFCON U17 Zonal Qualifiers – CECAFA Zone in Tanzania, Uganda beat Djibouti 8-0 a performance they have to replicate to see the team through to the finals of the tournament.

All eyes will be on sharp shooter Oscar Mawa

The tournament is being used to get the two Cecafa regional representatives who will play in the U17 CAF finals that will be held in Morocco in July next year.

Uganda is looking at making a back-to-back qualification after playing in the past one that was held in Tanzania in 2018.

U17 AFCON QUALIFIERS: Uganda face Ethiopia in second test of the tournament

    Uganda Cubs Vs. Ethiopia

Date: December 18, 2020 at 3:00pm (Rwandan time)

Competition: U17 Total CAF AFCON Zonal Qualifiers

    Group A: Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia

Group B: Tanzania, Rwanda and Djibouti

Venue: Umuganda Stadium, Rubavu – Rwanda

Having had a perfect start to the tournament after treating our ailing neighbours Kenya to a yummy 5-0 buffet, Uganda Cubs technical staff knows exactly there is a lot at stake for the team to settle for.

A week back upon the team’s arrival to Rwanda and even before kicking a ball, Uganda has been tipped to be the favourite by many to win the tournament basing on various factors laid forth but commandant Hamuza Lutalo says this will not give them self complacency for they to sit back and look on.

He definitely knows, if Uganda lost to Ethiopia in their second group match, Uganda would then finish in position two in group A that comprise of Cubs, Kenya and Ethiopia thus so he risks not to take anything for granted.

‘I know what our second game tomorrow means to us, we shall not take anything for granted.’ Hamuza Lutalo disclosed after today evening training session.

‘Yes, we know we already qualified for semis but we shall treat every game in a special way possible. We have to give it utmost attention and the best shot by parading our best players on the battle front.’ he added.

Uganda Cubs players celebrate one of their five goals against Kenya

In their recent past meeting, Uganda beat Ethiopia 3-1, in the finals of U17 CAF Africa Cup of Nations Zonal qualifiers that were held in Tanzania in 2018.

Should Uganda apply the same tactics and approach like they did in that final game, then they’re rest assured of the number one slot in group A.

However, Uganda should be alert that Ethiopia’s only hope(s) of qualifying to the next stage is into this match and if I employ my mathematics so well, any slim loss (below four goals), a draw or victory for Ethiopia, would guarantee them a visa to semi finals. So they will want to fight till the last whistle, I presume.

Uganda held their pre-match training at Umuganda stadium (outside pitch) by 3pm (4pm Uganda time) for muscle relaxation and recuperation all players were in sober state and available for selection tomorrow apart from clean sheet master goalie Abdu Magada who is nursing a wound but subject to team doctor’s final assessment to determine his feat if he’s to feature in tomorrow’s game.

Uganda is here on a mission and that is to qualify for U17 CAF Africa Cup of Nations that will be staged in Morocco next year 2021 and they know mere storming finals is enough so they have to over come the hurdles on their path to hit the intended target.

CAF/CECAFA U17: Champions Uganda hammer Kenya 5-0 to storm semifinals

Catch them if you can. The Uganda U17 are on a double mission to defend the CECAFA Title and also play again at the AFCON Finals.

It was a perfect start to their mission as they had little mercy for neighbours Kenya in their opening match on Wednesday afternoon in Rubavu Rwanda of the CAF/CECAFA U17 Zonal Qualifiers for the 2021 Total AFCON U17 Finals- Morocco.

Uganda won 5-0 with goals scored by hat-trick hero Oscar Mawa, Travis Mutyaba and Ronald Madoi. The win hands Uganda a place in the semifinals while Kenya’s slim chances for progress to the next stage will be determined by the outcome of the final group B fixture between Uganda and Ethiopia on Friday 18th December 2020. Both Kenya and Ethiopia are tied on one (1) pint apiece but the former (Kenya) has completed its outings.

Uganda, coached by Hamuza Lutalo got out of the blocks with a quick bang by netting the game’s opener after just 7 minutes played. The pressing game for Uganda U-17 Cubs put the Kenyans under pressure as they resorted to damage limitation to allow the game end 1-0 for half time.

Despite missing several clear cut chances in first half of the game, Mawa composed himself to perform duties for stirkers. The Cubs returned from the break with a lot of intent to improve the game’s goals’ tally as Mawa got his name on the score sheet again with a brace in a space of four minutes between the 50th and 54th minutes. He walked away with a match day CAF ball. The rout was completed with Mutyaba and Madoi adding their names on the score board with strikes in the 78th and 85th minutes.

Cubs defender Madoi reserved some time to involve himself in a build up before netting off a low tap-in in the dying minutes of the game.

Kenya tried their best to get at least a solitary goal but Uganda Cubs defence commanded by nonsense Ronald Madoi remained mean and tight.

‘We had good preparations for the match against Kenya. We shall continue with the same plans and preparations of the fixture with Ethiopia. We shall not undermine our opponents. We shall apply the same spirit. We want to play that game with superiority and show them that we are number one in East Africa’

Uganda plays Ethiopia on Friday at 4pm (Ugandan time) in Rubavu at Umuganda stadium.

The Qualifiers are being used to get the top two teams that will make it to the 2021 Total U-17 AFCON Finals to be hosted by Morocco.

Group Winners and runners up will automatically qualify for semi finals. Uganda is the defending champion of the tournament. They beat Ethiopia 3-1 in 2018 finals in Tanzania.
