The sports fraternity returned to life with the return of active football (although without fans) as the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) organized the league play-offs at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru in Buikwe district.
These play-offs entailed the FUFA Big League clubs (four), 16 regional and two in the women category.
Since 19th October 2020, the FUFA Technical Centre has been like a bee-hive environment with mouth-watering action to determine the promoted club to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League, StarTimes FUFA Big League and the FUFA Women Super League.
A couple of departments; ranging from the FUFA Competitions department, welfare, technical, match-day organization, refereeing, health& safety, security, media and communications all joined hands to ensure that a successful championship is held.

Luwero United (Buganda), Gaddafi (Eastern), Terrazo and Tiles (Western) as well as Calvary (West Nile) qualified to the StarTimes FUFA Big League for the season 2020-21.
These four clubs were confirmed after the gruelling FUFA Regional play-off action held at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.

Luwero United of Buganda region overcame CATDA (Kampala region) 1-0 in the final.
Joseph Justus Nkabirwa scored the lone strike on the day for Luwero United who finished the game with 10 men after a sending off for winger Sadat Mukembo.
In the earlier match, Luwero United had ejected fellow Buganda region Buwambo United 7-6 in post-match penalties after a goal-less stalemate.
On the other hand, CATDA out-witted Edgars 2-0 courtesy of Ivan Mayanja’s brace.

Gaddafi Football Club, an Eastern region side based in Jinja city secured the second slot, winning 3-0 over Pallisa’s Sansiro.
Retiring Patrick Asiku, Mark Bamukyaaye (penalty) and super substitute Ronald Bithum Nsumbiano scored Gaddafi’s goals.
Gaddafi had moments earlier easily won 4-0 over Admin. Admin ejected Team Church from Katawi 5-4 in post-match penalties after a goal-less stalemate.

Western region’s Terrazo and Tiles got the third slot after winning 4-3 in post-match penalties over Kitara region side Booma.
Normal time had ended goal-less before post-match penalties were called in to decide the winner.
Terrazo and Tiles had progressed to the finals after humbling Kigezi 4-3 with normal time having ended goal-less.
Booma overcame Kasese’s Asingya 3-1 courtesy of a brace from striker Aldrine Kambale and Clinton Asiimwe.
Shamo Muhammed scored the consolation for Asingya in the closing stages of the match.

The final play-off slot for the Star Times FUFA Big League was claimed by Yumbe based Calvary of the West Nile region.
Calvary overcame Northern Gateway 2-0 courtesy of goals by teenager Kassim Talib and Jamil Asega.
‘We prepared well and the players knew exactly what was at stake. We looked for the early goal like planned and got it. I am happy for the work ethic of the players’ Ahmed Olima Borine, head coach at Calvary.

Talib’s goal was the fastest since the FUFA Promotional play-offs kicked off on 19th October 2020.

The official match start list for Northern Gateway (Northern region) and Calvary (West Nile region) has been released.
The winner of this match will qualify to the StarTimes FUFA Big League to join Luwero United (Buganda), Gaddafi (Eastern) as well as Terrazo and Tiles (Western).
Arising out of the deliberations of the meeting between FUFA, UPL Board and the 2020/21 UPL Clubs, FUFA hereby issues the Circular on the resumption of the 2020/21 StarTimes Uganda Premier League;
FUFA will procure a Government authorised authority as the official FUFA COVID – Testing Centre and only results from such a centre will be recognised by the football regulations.
FUFA will procure in-house medical personnel on a fulltime basis for a renewable period of 6-months to undertake COVID-19 responsibilities as required of FUFA.
Licensed players and technical staff for the 2020/2021 season who will undertake sporting roles at training and matches will undergo a mandatory COVID-19 test.
Only persons who test negative and get issued with a FUFA COVID-19 Clearance Certificate shall be eligible to participate in the team training and matches.
All Referees and Match Commissioners for the 2020/21 UPL Season will undergo a mandatory COVID-19 test. Only persons who test negative and get issued with a FUFA-COVID-19 Clearance Certificate shall be eligible to officiate the matches.
The FUFA COVID-19 personnel and the official FUFA COVID-Testing Centre will administer the bi-weekly testing of players and technical staff.
FUFA shall undertake the cost of testing Referees and Match Commissioners and will also pre-finance the cost of COVID-19 tests for club players and officials.
Corresponding deductions will be made against future club incomes as reimbursement for this medical exercise.
Players and officials found to be positive to the COVID-19 test shall be ineligible to make contact with the rest of the players and technical staff for training and matches. A match shall only be rescheduled if a club has less than 10 outward players and goalkeeper that are not positive to the COVID-19 test.
Training and Matches venues are out of bounds to persons that are not members of the playing or technical staff that have been issued with FUFA COVID-19 Clearance Certificate. An inspection will be conducted by FUFA and only authorised venues will be issued with the FUFA COVID-19 Venue Clearance Certificate to host training sessions and matches.
FUFA will issue COVID-19 Competitions Regulations to detail the execution of the authorised matches and training by the 15th November 2020 with the strict observation of training grounds and Stadium SOPs.
There will be sanctions and fines up to exclusion of the club from FUFA Competitions for repeated and gross violation of the COVID-19 Competitions Regulations.
The FUFA Club Licensing Committee will issue 2020/21 UPL Club Licenses by 3rd November 2020 while the FUFA Competitions Directorate to issue Players’ Licenses and bench permits by 10th November 2020 and the UPL Secretariat shall release the fixtures by 10th November 2020 and the Uganda Premier League Kickoff is set for 3rd December 2020.
Uganda U20(Hippos) coach Morley Byekwaso has summoned a provisional squad of 46 players to begin preparations for the forthcoming U20 Africa Cup of Nations Zonal Qualifiers.
The team comprises of six goalkeepers, thirteen defenders, ten midfielders and sixteen forwards and will report to camp on Saturday, 31st October 2020.
All the players and coaching staff will undergo a mandatory COVID-19 test before entering camp.
The team will then start training on 1st -4th November 2020 at IUIU Campus, Kabojja before shifting to FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru where they will have a residential camp up to 19th November 2020.

As directed by H.E the President of Uganda and with guidance from the Ministry of Health and the National Council of Sports FUFA carried out COVID-19 PCR tests for 20 players and officials from each of the participating teams in the play offs.
Tests conducted for Young Elephants Football Club from the Northern Region and Hot Springs Football Club from West Nile Region returned Eight (8) positive results each.
This is high a ratio of infections and could easily endanger the entire community of the team.
This matter was brought to the attention of the FUFA Executive for guidance.
The Executive has considered the issues at hand and treated the matter as not provided for under the FUFA Competitions Rules and decided as follows:
1- The playoff matches Young Elephants v Northern Gateway and Calvary v Hot Springs is decided in favour of Northern Gateway FC and Calvary FC.
2 – A single match Calvary FC v Northern Gateway FC be played on Saturday 31st October 2020 at 12:00pm to determine the team that will sportingly be promoted to the 2nd Division 2020/2021.
3 – Young Elephants FC and Hot Springs FC are encouraged to undertake measures and guidelines from the Ministry of Heath to ensure quick recovery of the affected individuals of the teams.

Western region’s Terrazo and Tiles became the third club to sportingly qualify to the StarTimes FUFA Big League.
Terrazo and Tiles beat Booma 4-3 in post-match penalties after normal time had ended one all at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru on Friday.
Walter Omona’s 5th minute early goal for Booma was cancelled by Abraham Athuhaire’s 78th equalizer to push the game into the shoot-out.

The CECAFA (Central East Zone Qualifiers) will determine the teams that make it to the AFCON U20 and AFCON U17 Finals in Mauritania and Morocco respectively.
The Uganda U20 was drawn in group B alongside Burundi, Eritrea and South Sudan. The Regional Qualifiers tournament will be held in Tanzania from 22nd November to 6th December 2020.
The U17 side will take on Ethiopia and Kenya in Group B in a tournament to be hosted by Rwanda from 13th to 28th December 2020.
Celebrated Ugandan female artist Sheebah Karungi has made a contribution of 1500 packs of Holic sanitary pads to the Uganda U-17 National women football team.
The function was held on Thursday afternoon shortly after the team’s training session at the StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo.

The U17 women team will negotiate a two legged clash with Cameroon at new dates to be confirmed by CAF. FUFA will now give the team a break this weekend until when new schedules for the remaining matches are communicated.

Two Uganda National Junior football teams U20 –Hippos and U17-Cubs have today known their opponents after the draws were conducted via zoom with the main event at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
The CECAFA (Central East Zone Qualifiers) will determine the teams that make it to the AFCON U20 and AFCON U17 Finals in Mauritania and Morocco respectively.
The Uganda U20 was drawn in group B alongside Burundi, Eritrea and South Sudan. The Regional Qualifiers tournament will be held in Tanzania from 22nd November to 6th December 2020.
The U17 side will take on Ethiopia and Kenya in Group B at a tournament to be hosted by Rwanda from 13th to 28th December 2020.
Uganda U-15 that won the CECAFA tournament. Most of the players in this squad will be considered for this year’s 17 tournament in Rwanda.
Uganda is the defending champion of the CECAFA U17 tournament after defeated Ethiopia 3-1 in the final in 2018 in Tanzania to storm the 2019 U17 AFCON tournament.
