FUFA, Coaches deliberate on technical aspects of the game

FUFA has on Monday held a consultative meeting with coaches from teams playing in the Uganda Premier League, FUFA Big League, National teams and executive of the Uganda Football Coaches Association.

Several deliberations were addressed ranging from how best the game can improve, self branding of coaches and the challenges that the managers face.

In his opening remarks, FUFA President, Eng. Moses Magogo who chaired the meeting lauded the coaches for their contribution towards football.

‘We appreciate the role you play as coaches. You make a great contribution because the careers of players who are the key pillars of the football product are in your hands.’

The President however, called upon the coaches to look at improving themselves inorder to suit the modern era.

‘Football is a dynamic entity. Things are changing almost every hour. So if we want to improve and attain professionalism, coaches must as well embrace change and learn the new tactics that will help you suit in the modern trends.’

The President called upon coaches to embrace self development and also announced a new fund that FUFA will put in place to help coaches.

‘Learning never stops and this is very important for coaches. In a way of motivating those that have made self development, FUFA will put in a place a fund to help coaches either by paying for coaching courses or funding travels for those that want to enroll for coaches abroad.’

He also revealed to the coaches that FUFA is introducing new regulations for the coaches starting next season.

‘For us to improve, we must upgrade and this means trying out to ventures which may seem strict but that is the journey we have taken.’

    The new rules include;

    Pro-License for coaches
All coaches in the Uganda Premier League and the FUFA Big League will be required to have a Pro- License that will come with limits and sanctions.

    Movement of coaches
Coaches in the first and second division will not be allowed to make more than two transfers during a season.

Coaches will required to sign a code of conduct prior to the start of the season. This is aimed at protecting the image of the game.

    Intermediaries
Coaches will be obliged to have intermediaries who negotiate contracts with teams on their behalf.

    Enforcing payment
Starting next season, FUFA will ask clubs to submit proof of payment of coaches after every two months.

    NSSF and PAYE
Just like it is the case with players, coaches will be subjected to pay income tax(Pay As You Earn) and also contribute to the National Social Security Fund.

In their reactions, coaches lauded FUFA for the meeting and also went ahead to relay the challenges they face while executing their duties.

Mata Lule tasked FUFA to push clubs to respect the set standard.

‘Prior to every start of the season, clubs undergo a licensing exercise but some of the regulations are dropped along the way. We ask that FUFA sticks to their set guidelines.’

Vipers SC head coach, Fred Kajjoba called upon FUFA to push clubs respect contracts of coaches and players.

Vipers SC coach head coach Fred Kajoba.

‘Our biggest challenge is that we work in an environment that is not streamlined. Many coaches go months without pay, some are sacked without compensation. So we ask that FUFA helps in effecting this.’

  • FUFA, Women Football Club administrators engage in brainstorming meeting

FUFA, Women Football Club administrators engage in brainstorming meeting

FUFA and owners of clubs featuring in the Women Super League and Women Elite League had a fruitful meeting on Saturday. The purpose of the meeting was to brainstorm on how best Women Football can be improved in Uganda.

Chaired by FUFA President Moses Magogo, several issues were discussed ranging from the journey moved so far, what needs to be done to take Women’s football to another level and the challenges faced by the clubs.

‘As FUFA, we have always thought that such engagements help us to understand our successes and challenges better. We can agree to disagree here but even when FUFA or clubs have different opinions about an issue, when we meet, a solution is always found.’ He said in his opening remarks.

‘We are proud of the journey moved so far since the start of regular club football for Women Football in 2015. I can say we have registered a number of successful stories ranging from increase in the number of girls taking part, the quality of football displayed to our national teams. But at the moment we are saying can we engage another gear?’

The President assured the club owners that FUFA has deliberate intentions to develop and promote Women’s football and encouraged them to continue supporting the game.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo addressing club officials.

‘The club owners have played a key role in sustaining Women’s Football and has FUFA, we have good plans to continue with this journey. At least before the COVID-19 outbreak, we had registered all our national teams (women) in all the available competitions. Our U-17 National team still has a chance to qualify for the World Cup and our wish is that they qualify because this will be a turning point for not only the girls but for us all.’

About the support from FIFA, the President assured the stakeholders that when the money comes, it will be appropriated well.

‘There has been a confusion by many about the financial support that FUFA will receive from FIFA. We shall receive USD 1.5M with USD 500,000 strictly attached to Women’s football. This is not COVID-19 relief but rather a package to develop and sustain Women’s football. We shall engage with you to brainstorm on how best we can allocate these funds. A paper will be made with a plan to see that everyone benefits’

Several club owners raised patent issues in the meeting and asked FUFA to make these meetings more often.

Deo Olila, the headmaster and chairman Olila High School called upon FUFA to organize such meetings with clubs because it helps to bridge the gap between the two sides.

FUFA holds consultative meeting with captains of UPL, Big League teams

FUFA has on Saturday held a successful consultative meeting with captains/ representatives of clubs featuring in the Uganda Premier League and FUFA Big League.

The meeting chaired by FUFA President, Eng. Moses Magogo was hinged on a number of issues including player development, personal branding, importance of players having intermediaries and the proposed FUFA Competition reforms.

The President in his opening remarks indicated players are key stakeholders of the game and ought to make their contribution for football to develop.

‘We appreciate the role you play as players that make the football product but you must understand your role, the environment around in order to get a better product. It’s more than the football you are playing.’

He stated that players must work on their brands as individuals in order to sell a good image to the public.

‘Professionalism is about self-branding. As players, you must make some sacrifices to become unique. The musicians do it in the way they dress and appear in public. Have we as players looked in that direction? Probably we need to guide where necessary but it must start with you.’

About intermediaries, the President advised players to have authorized people to help negotiate contracts with clubs on their behalf.

‘A player at this moment must have an intermediary to make negotiations on your behalf. Your focus must be on delivering on pitch and assign other people to do the contract negotiations.’ He said.

SC Villla midfielder Emmanuel Wasswa putting across his point.

In the same meeting, the President revealed that FUFA has already received a letter from Government asking players to make a contribution to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and Pay As You Earn (PAYE).

‘The Government has officially written to us regarding NSSF and taxation for the players’ earnings. As law abiding citizens, definitely we must pay taxes but it is also important for players to save with NSSF. If we are talking about professionalism, these are some of the things we must embrace.’

It is by law that employees pay 5% of their total monthly wages and their respective employers top up with 10% of employees’ total cash remuneration. Every member therefore saves 15% of their total monthly remuneration with NSSF.

Players who attended the meeting lauded FUFA for the arrangement and believe some of the things discussed will help them in making better decisions.

Paul Mucureezi who represented Vipers SC stated he learnt the importance of having an intermediary.

    Vipers SC forward Paul Mucureezi.

‘It was an eye opener to us. Many of the players have a bad perception about football agents but today, we got to learn the importance of the intermediaries because not many of us fully understand the details of contracts.’

KCCA FC captain Charles Lukwago appreciated the sensitization about playing while saving in order to care for life after retirement.

KCCA FC captain Charles Lukwago listening attentively.

‘Saving with NSSF helps us a lot because you are guaranteed of something after retirement. At KCCA FC, we already have this arrangement and it is important that for now it spreads across the entire league.’

Jimmy Kulaba, the BUL FC captain lauded FUFA for such a timely innervation and reaching out to players.

Jimmy Kulaba, the BUL FC captain

‘As players, we have always been left behind but this meeting is a foundation of better things to come. The issues we discussed are very important and they promised that the same arrangement will be spread to all the players.’

‘Personally, I have been lucky to play at clubs like BUL FC, URA FC and Police FC that have saving arrangement. Definitely it will help players develop the culture of saving so that we don’t suffer after retirement.’

Bernard Muwanga, a defender at Bright Stars FC tasked FUFA to make sure clubs pay players.

Bright Stars FC Vice captain Bernard Muwanga.

‘As players, we want to improve our standards of living but many of us operate under tough conditions. Some clubs fulfill their obligation and this is where we call for FUFA’s intervention.’
