  • FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo’s message after the CSR activity in Luzira Upper prison

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo’s message after the CSR activity in Luzira Upper prison

As part of FUFA Community Social Responsibility, I led a group of FUFA officials, staff and the President’s XI (formed of Ex- international players) visited Luzira Upper Prison on Sunday morning. I arrived from Morocco at 6am and without sleep undertook a prior arranged programme by the FUFA Marketing and Communications team and the Uganda Football Player’s Association.

It is our strategy to take and preach football to communities as a tool to unite, inspire and give hope and here we found a community of largely the age of 20-35 years from allover Uganda.

The team of Ex-Internationals that started the charity game against Upper Prisons inmates. They are members of Uganda Football Players’ Association. L-R-Back row Andy Lule, Hassan Mubiru, Ali Kitenda, Larwrence Kizito, Simeon Masaba, Ayub Balyejusa Front: Sadiq Wassa, Paul Mukatabala, Ali Kayongo, Edwrad Kalungi and Hakim Magumba

Not everyone in prison committed the offenses they are charged or convicted for, true some came in conflict with the law and are undergoing rehabilitation before they join the community again. For sure anyone of you reading this could easily be there as this is life.

I am glad we inspired and gave hope to these Ugandans using football. They are disciplined and a very organised group with a “FUFA” of their own to organise a league of clubs named after European Clubs. Their Select team is called ‘Upper Stars’

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo hands over some of the donated footballs to Uganda Prisons Service sports officer, Nalis Bigingo

The inmates were extremely excited beyond what we hoped. They even danced for us the kisoga “Tamena Ibuga”

We played a football match which ended 2-2 with President’s 11 goals scored by Edward Kalungi and Hakim Magumba. I also got an opportunity to play football along the President’s XI.

We have agreed that the names of the European Clubs be dropped and replaced with Uganda Azam Premier League Club names and we launched the annual “FUFA Cup of Hope” We expect that our clubs will also visit and play with these guys regularly.

FUFA officials delivered soap from Bidco Uganda Limited to the inmates

FUFA donated a computer, footballs, referees equipment, and 50 cartons of soap from BIDCO Uganda Limited the Sponsors of Uganda Cranes as a beginning.

The Uganda Prisons authorities and the inmates thanked me and FUFA for the recent qualification and stellar performance at AFCON 2017 with a gift.

We will continue to support this community with courses for referees, coaches and administration.

FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo showcased his football skills but the Upper Stars played to a memorable 2-2 draw with the President’s XI

Thank you Uganda Prison Services for the opportunity given to us and the good job being done in Luzira. We pray for the inmates to once get out and reunite with thier families and loved ones.

Hours after arrival from Morocco on Sunday morning, the FUFA President, Eng. Moses Magogo led the strong delegation to Luzira.

He was accompanied by the 2nd FUFA Vice President Darius Mugoye,  FUFA Marketing Director Esther Musoke, Communications director Ahmed Hussein, national teams’ Officer Patrick Ntege Kaweesa as they were also joined by a group of Ex-Uganda Cranes internationals under the Uganda Football Players Association (UFPA) one of the 33 members of FUFA.

The programme is part of the federation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) cause.

Addressing the inmates, the FUFA President noted that the federation remains committed to the cause of spreading and taking the beautiful game to the communities, inmates inclusive.

The unique power of football has brought us this close.

I am humbled to be here for the first time as a visitor.

FUFA is committed to associating with every kind of communities for the development of the game

Eng Magogo observed with concern the immense talent (players, referees and administrators) that some of the inmates are endowed with.

There are quite a number of young and energetic talented players who can serve in different clubs after completing your sentences.

    FUFA Cup of Hope Tournament:

In the same vein, there will be annual tournament named the ‘FUFA Cup of Hope’ with a glittering giant trophy to be competed for amongst all the participating teams within the Prisons service.

In his address, Andrew Nsamba, the Chairperson of the Upper Prison Sports Association (UPSA), he appreciated the historic visit by the FUFA delegation.

Since 1948 when Luzira was officially opened, we had never received any guest from FUFA. We are also humbled by this visit.

We plan to switch back to the naming of our own teams to have tags of the domestic clubs currently playing in the Azam Uganda Premier League.

Nsamba remarked that internal competitions among these clubs is a way of entertainment and psycho-social well being of inmates and enhancing staff inmate relationship.

He intimated some of their challenges ranging from limited resources like balls, jerseys, referees equipment, lapse in continuity of their various programmes to missing computer.

Former Uganda Cranes midfielder Hakim ‘Boda Boda’ Magumba produced the old magical skills against the Upper Prisons Stars. He wrapped up the great performance with a brilliant solo goal

There was excitement as the inmates were engaged in a football match against the Uganda Cranes Ex-Internationals.

The game ended in a 2 all stalemate with Edward Kalungi and the ever exciting Hakim ‘Boda Boda’ Magumba scoring for the former Uganda Cranes players.

Former Uganda Cranes, Lukuli United, Police, Express and SC Villa intelligent forward Hassan ‘Figo’ Mubiru was a joy to watch at Luzira

Other Ex-Internationals as goalkeeper Sadiq Wassa, Hassan Mubiru, Ayub Balyejusa, Ali Kitonsa, Paul Mutakabala, Simeon ‘Biri Etambuula’ Masaba also featured in well cheered match.

The FUFA President also graced the field of play in the latter stages of the game after coming on for Kitonsa, much to the applause of the mammoth crowd that lauded his inch-close ball control, ball protection technique and passing finesse throughout the 10 minutes he featured in.
