    CECAFA U17 Girls Championship:

    Final Match Day

    Burundi 4-0 Eritrea

    Tanzania 10-0 Djibouti

    Uganda 2-0 Kenya

Endless cheers and celebrations rocked FUFA Technical Center Njeru on Tuesday evening, as Uganda U-17 girls players, coaches and the local fans danced endlessly, in jubilation of the Inaugural CECAFA U-17 girls trophy.

Uganda girls now add yet another juniors regional trophy to the boys U-15 event won in August in Asmara Eritrea.

The great achievement of the girls conquest of the region in the youth championship, was cemented by a 2-0 win over rivals Kenya, at the final bend of the one week event that attracted six teams and played on a round robin.

Eventual best player of the tournament and FUFA Airtel female player of the year runner up Fauzia Najjemba opened the scoring in the first half.

Later, the reigning FUFA Airtel female player of the year Juliet Nalukenge rounded up the scoring deep in the second half to take Uganda top of the six team table with 13 points from five games each played.

Nalukenge was Uganda’s top and tournaments second best scorer with 9 goals, three shy from tournaments top scorer and Tanzania striker Aisha Masaka, whose 7 goals in the 10-0 routing of Djibouti earlier in the day, gave her the top scorer’s award.

Uganda head coach Ayub Khalifa had made two changes in the usual starting 11, having given starts to Hadijah Nandago and right full back Akadinda Gillian, for Catherine Nagadya and sick Samalie Nakacwa respectively, and even with the changes.

Uganda remained a better team, holding the Kenyansa at bay and only making them the receivers on several occasions, with Nalukenge, Najjemba and terrific winger Margret Kunihira all coming too close to several occasions.

Even when holding midfielder Kevin Nakacwa was stretchered off with Moureen Nangonzi coming in her place, it still remained impossible for any Kenya threats in a game Khalifa made only one substitution.

I am very grateful to God for this achievement. I want to thank the players for the hard work, FUFA for allowing the young girls to take part in the girls event. The tournament was not a simple one, it was too competitive and I am glad we are the ones having come out victorious,” Uganda head coach Ayub Khalifa said.

Tanzania, to whom only Uganda dropped points in the 1-1 draw, finished second with 11 points while Kenya came third on 7 points, with tournament’s fair play award team Burundi coming in fourth position after beating Eritrea 4-0 to clobber 7 points too, but with a minor goal difference.

Tournament’s last team was Djibouti, who finished with not goal scored but after conceding 48 goals in the 14-0 loss to Kenya, 11-0 to Uganda, 8-0 to Burundi, 5-0 to Eritrea and lastly 10-0 to Tanzania, although they showed great improvement in the second half of their game against Tanzania, whom they limited to only a single score, having finished the first half 9-0.

Uganda’s win comes in the wake of yet another great triumph that saw the young girls lift the COSAFA tournament following a 2-1 win over South Africa in the recent event held in Mauritius, and with a big number of the COSAFA team players having been on the CECAFA winning side, the future is surely bright for Uganda women football.

Tanzania Girls U-17 team delayed the title celebrations for Uganda at the ongoing CECAFA U-17 Championship at FUFA Technical Center Njeru, after holding the hosts to a 1-1 draw in the third game of match day four on Sunday Evening.

The two high riding sides faced off in what was seemingly a final for table leaders Uganda before a fair crowd, a game that would seal the title for the hosts if they picked maximum points.

Juliet Nalukenge takes on a Tanzanian opponent during match day four of the CECAFA U17 Girls Championship at Njeru

However, it was the Tanzanians that took the lead through reliable striker Aisha Khamis Masaka, who took advantage of a laxity between Kevin Nakacwa and Stella Musibika, to slot in through Daphine Nyayenga legs on 18 minutes.

The Ugandans and their cheering fans thought they had won a penalty, when center referee Caroline Wanjara pointed to the spot after spotting Tanzanian midfielder Thabea Aidano Munga for having handled in the area but reversed her decision.

But it took a few minutes before Uganda equalized, this time, Wanjara awarding a penalty for handball by the same Munga, following a corner kick by Uganda that dropped in the area that forced the Tanzanians to struggle clearing it leading into the handball.

FUFA Airtel awards female player of the year runner up Fauzia Najjemba made no mistake, easily beating Tanzanian custodian Asha Mrisho Ismail for the first half to end 1-1.

Uganda returned in the second half with an intent for the winner, but was only denied twice by the woodwork, first with reigning FUFA female player of the year Juliet Nalukenge shot coming off the crossbar and Shakila Nyinagahirwa also seeing her effort bouncing off the 90, with the Tanzanian keeper already beaten.

Uganda was missing right full-back Samalie Nakacwa due to sickness, and head Coach Ayub Khalifa blamed the draw on this

“We were missing our first choice defender and that destabilized our defense, but we prayed to our best not to lose today. We have a final and crucial game on Tuesday and we shall get back and plan on how we can win this game because it’s only the win that will give us the title,” Ayub said.

    Uganda U17 Team
    Tanzania U-17 Team

However, it was not on the good side with the Tanzanian coach Bakari Shime, who blamed the draw on poor officiating.

“We are not satisfied with the officiating today, because the referee was biased and gave away a penalty, but we are not out, and we shall play till the end of the event,” Shime said.

A reasonable number of fans watched the Uganda – Tanzania U-17 girls match at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru

The draw left Uganda top on 10 points with Tanzania second on 8 points, and with Tanzania playing goalless and 37 goal deficit Djibouti, Uganda in a must win contest against Kenya on Tuesday if the home team is to win the title as the championship climaxes on Tuesday.

2019 CECAFA U-17 MATCH DAY THREE RESULTS

    Burundi 8-0 Djibouti

    Tanzania 3-1 Kenya

    Uganda 10-0 Eritrea

Uganda Girls U-17 girls football team produced arguably one of their best football displays so far at the ongoing CECAFA U-17 girls tournament, with a 10-0 demolition of stubborn Eritrea side in the third game of the match day three on Friday evening.

Eritrea, who had resisted favorites Tanzania serge only to lose 5-0 in their opening game and stepped their game against Kenya whom they held 1-1, had come into the Uganda game with high spirits to keep their passing and pressing game.

However, smart Uganda went all out on the first whistle with lively runs and attacks from wingers Margret Kunihira and Catherine Nagadya, which left the Eritrean full back on a very busy work to contain them in vein.

Uganda U17 girls celebrate one of their 10 goals

And it took only five minutes for Fauzia Najjemba to put Uganda ahead with a well taken chipped ball off a Nagadya cross that gave the Eritrean goalie Rim Redje no chance.

That was the beginning of the route to the wallop, that by half time, the Eritreans were nothing but down by 5-0, with a Juliet Nalukenge double, Margret Kunihira and Catherine Nagadya all on the score sheet.

The Ugandan side got good balance in the midfield, commanded by Kevin Nakacwa and attacking midfielder Shakira Nyinagahirwa, with Sumaya Komuntale and Samalie Nakacwa, who was later stretchered off, manning well the left and right flanks, while Stella Musibika and Bira Nadunga were un breakable in the heart of  defence.

Its no wonder the fine passing and movement enabled Kevin Nakacwa to register herself on the scoring sheet with Musibika and Komuntale also scoring, before Nalukenge completed her hat trick with a penalty after she was fouled in the area.

“Our main target in this championship is to win the title, that’s why we come prepared in every game. We watched Eritrea give hard time to favourites Kenya and we planned to play better than them and that’s what we did,” Said Uganda Coach Ayub Khalifa.

His Eritrean counterpart Mekonnen Zewde accepted defeat though he said they have not given up on doing better in the remaining games.

“Uganda was better physically, mentally and technically than us, we couldn’t match them, this was too much for us. But we are going to prepare for the next games,” Zewde said.

Uganda stands out as the highest scoring team in the six team championship, having scored 25 goals and yet to concede in three outings.

Team Uganda remained top of the table with maximum points from three games, followed by Tanzania, who today moved to 7 points after a 3-1 win over Kenya, while Kenya remains in third on 4 points, but with a better goal difference over Burundi, who also moved to 4 points following their 8-0 win over Djibouti.

Uganda will get closer to smelling the title, if they beat Tanzania in the second last match on Sunday, where Kenya will take on Eritrea and Burundi faces Djibouti.

Mohammed Mousa, Sudan U20 Head Coach

Here are the pre-match press conference quotes:

Mousa Mohamed (Head coach of Sudan)

We told the players to focus for the third place play-off match after falling out in the semi-final. We are focused to win this game. We are confident. This is a very important for us to get the bronze medals as consolation. It is a different game altogether. We need something out of it. This is not a group stage game. It is a play-off match. The concentration will be different. This is a tournament that has helped to scout young players to the national teams. There are new good boys. Being the head coach of the U15, U17 and U20 teams, we have got advantage to test the players under different systems and formations. There has been good physic and speed in the tournament

Stanley Okumbi, Kenya U20 Head Coach

Stanley Okumbi – Kenya U20 Head Coach:

A great final is expected. Al the teams have been showcasing their abilities and we have used a lot of energy. We were the best teams right from the start and deserve to play in the final. They (Tanzania) have good players having scored 17 goals to this season, we are prepared for them nonetheless. Tomorrow is a final, we have good plans how to stop them. We have the discipline offensive and in defence. Three players need late check-ups after picking up knocks. CECAFA has done a good job to organize a good championship. Players are young and we are focused

Zuberi S. Katwila – Tanzania U20 Head Coach

From the group stages to the final, we faced tough challenges.  We are set. We are now focused for tomorrow’s match against Kenya. Kenyans are our brothers and it will be friendly fire. The issue of traveling to Gulu and back to Njeru is behind us now, we are set. We are now focused for tomorrow’s match
