Defending champions BUL FC were held to a goalless draw by Maroons FC, while Express FC edged NEC FC 1-0 under the floodlights in Thursday’s FUFA Super 8 doubleheader at the Hamz Stadium Nakivubo.
In the early kickoff, BUL dominated possession but could not find a way past a disciplined Maroons defense.
Debutants Farouk Yawe and Kelvin Barni featured for BUL, while Maroons goalkeeper Hassan Matovu made two vital saves to secure a clean sheet. The two sides will settle the tie in the return leg on September 10th at Nakivubo Stadium, with a semifinal place at stake.
Later in the evening, Express FC sealed a narrow win over NEC thanks to Ali Ismael’s 13th-minute rebound strike. Despite NEC piling pressure in the second half, goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan stood out with a string of saves to keep them in contention. The two sides meet again in the reverse fixture on September 9th at Hamz Stadium, live on FUFA TV.
The FUFA Super 8 brings together the top eight teams from last season’s Uganda Premier League, with BUL seeking to defend the crown they won against Vipers last year.
Vipers SC opted out due to other engagements and were replaced by Express FC.
The 2025 FUFA Super 8 tournament kicked off today at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo with two high-intensity games marking the start of pre-season preparations for the 2025/26 Uganda Premier League season, set to commence in mid-September.

As the match edged into went into stoppage time, it was URA who had the final say. Nichas Kabonge drew the last blood in the 90+4th minute. The goal gave URA an advantage heading into the second leg.
SC Villa 2-1 KCCA FC The evening fixture saw SC Villa take on rivals KCCA FC under the floodlights in what remains one of the biggest rivalries in the country.
The first goal came in the 35th minute when Hassan Mubiru capitalised on a defensive error to put Villa ahead with a sharp finish. Despite KCCA’s efforts to make a comeback in the second half, Villa made it worse for them as they scored the second goal in the 83rd minute through Andrew Otim. KCCA FC pulled one back through player Sammy Sebadduka though it was too late for them to snatch a win from SC Villa.
The tournament action continues tomorrow at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo with two more exciting fixtures:

URA FC vs Kitara FC – Early Test for Isabirye’s Charges
URA FC come into the tournament fresh from unveiling four signings: experienced forward Nelson Senkatuka, defenders Arthur Kiggundu and Ronald Otti, plus last season’s FUFA Big League Best Goalkeeper Muhammad Ssekeba.
Head coach Alex Isabirye believes the Super 8 will provide a perfect platform to build cohesion ahead of the new StarTimes Uganda Premier League season.
“We are taking this tournament very seriously because it gives us a chance to fine-tune the team before the new season kicks off. The new players have integrated well and are adding real competition in the squad. Against Kitara, we expect a competitive match, but our focus is on improving every aspect of our game,” said Isabirye.
Kitara, the Royals, are also active in the transfer market and will be keen to make a strong statement in their opening clash against the Tax Collectors.
KCCA FC vs SC Villa – A Rivalry Under Floodlights
The day’s second fixture sees traditional giants KCCA FC and SC Villa renew their rivalry in what promises to be an explosive encounter. New KCCA coach Brian Ssenyondo admits it’s not the easiest of opening fixtures but welcomes the challenge.
“It’s never a fixture you wish to start with because of the rivalry between the two clubs, but at the same time, it’s the best test of character for the players. We want to see how they respond in such a big game,” noted Ssenyondo.
Kasasiro Boys’ defender Filbert Obenchan echoed his coach’s words, stressing the need for caution:
“This is a fixture we have to handle with care. The target is to restore the club’s glory, and games like these set the tone for the season ahead.”
KCCA are boosted by the return of eight players who were part of Uganda Cranes’ 2024 CHAN squad, including Ivan Ahimbisibwe, Herbert Achayi, Gavin Kizito, Emmanuel Anyama, and Joel Sserunjogi.
Action continues tomorrow (Thursday) at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo with two more quarterfinal clashes: defending champions BUL FC will battle Maroons FC, while NEC FC take on Express FC under floodlights.
The FUFA Super 8 is reserved for teams that finished in the top eight positions of the previous Uganda Premier League season. The opening round is played on a two-legged basis, with the return fixtures scheduled for September 9th and 10th, immediately after the international break.

In an epic and entertaining final under the floodlights at the MTN Omondi Stadium on Sunday evening, Bul FC successfully defended their FUFA Super 8 title with a nail-biting 6-5 victory over Vipers SC in a dramatic penalty shootout. The match ended in a goalless stalemate after both normal and extra time, despite numerous opportunities for both sides to break the deadlock.
The game was a showcase of intense football action, with both teams displaying tactical discipline and relentless attacking efforts. Bul FC, known for their resilience and spirited play, matched Vipers SC stride for stride, creating a series of chances that tested both goalkeepers. However, the defensive lines held firm, forcing the contest to be decided from the penalty spot.
The decisive moment of the evening came during the shootout when Vipers’ teenage left-back Enock Luyima, under the weight of the occasion, sent his kick soaring over the crossbar. The miss handed Bul FC the victory, crowning them the FUFA Super 8 champions for the second consecutive year. The Eastern giants celebrated jubilantly, having added yet another chapter to their growing legacy.
Uganda Cranes Select Team Claims Third Place
Earlier in the day, the Uganda Cranes select team secured third place in the tournament with a comfortable 2-0 win over Kitara FC. Henry Kitegenyi was the hero of the day, scoring twice to secure victory for the Cranes select side, while Kitara FC settled for a respectable fourth-place finish.

Therefore, in order to ensure the Health and Safety of players, Technical staff and all stakeholders, all matches shall be played without spectators or fans until further notice.
As we wind up the 1st Division, 2nd Division and the Uganda Cup there shall be no fans in the stadiums. Teams are further strongly encouraged to limit all other authorized personnel to the bear minimum. SOPs must be strictly observed and COVID-19 vaccination enhanced by football officials and players throughout the country.

Here is the full communication in the Circualr with proposed reforms about FUFA Competitions;
In a bid to achieve FUFA’s Vision ‘To be the number one football nation in Africa on and off the field’ with a Mission ‘To develop promote and protect football for all’ the FUFA Executive Committee received proposals to reform Professional Club Football in Uganda, hereby presented for any ideas for implementation.
For the past 10 years, a number of achievements have been registered; creating an independent league body voted for by the clubs with a fulltime secretariat established; many clubs have known owners (natural or legal); increased sponsorship for some clubs and the league; 7 of the 18 clubs in the Uganda Super League then still exist in 2019/2020 while 2 are in the 2nd division league and 9 are defunct.
With the above achievements it is paramount new reforms are instituted to, among others, enhance quality of Clubs, increase Sporting Competition, improve Service delivery by Organizers, create better Club and League Brands, and increase revenues for both the clubs and the league.
Consequently, the 22nd FUFA Executive Committee approved wide scale consultations with First Division Clubs, Second Division Clubs, Sponsors, UPL Management, FUFA Regional Football Associations, and the General Public/Football fraternity on the proposals for the reform of professional club football in Uganda.
The proposals to be implemented at the beginning of the 2021/2022 season are as follows;
