Cubs Show Fighting Spirit in Final AFCON Warm-Up Against Cameroon

Under the floodlights of Ziaida Sports Complex in Benslimane, Morocco, the Uganda U17 Men’s National Team (Cubs) stepped onto the pitch for their final pre-tournament friendly. Facing a physically dominant and tactically disciplined Cameroon side, the Cubs knew this would be a tough test. And indeed, it was. The match ended in a narrow 4-3 defeat for Uganda Cubs, but beyond the scoreline, it was a game that proved the Cubs players had the heart, the hunger, and the determination to fight until the final whistle.

The game started with Cameroon showing exactly why they are one of Africa’s strongest teams at this level. Their players were tall, strong, and aggressive, pressing high up the pitch and forcing Uganda to defend deep. Within six minutes, the pressure paid off as Cameroon found the back of the net to take an early lead. The Cubs struggled to settle into their rhythm, finding it difficult to break through Cameroon’s defense.

Before long, the West Africans doubled their advantage, punishing Uganda for defensive errors. It was clear that Cameroon was in control, dictating play and using their physical presence to win duels in midfield. As Uganda tried to reorganize, a third goal for Cameroon came just before the halftime break, leaving the Cubs with a mountain to climb in the second half.

For many teams, a 3-0 deficit at halftime could have been the end. Heads could have dropped, and confidence could have been shattered. But not for the Cubs. As they walked off the pitch for the halftime team talk, the message from head coach Brian Ssenyondo was clear—the game is not over. Fight back. Show character.

When Uganda returned to the pitch for the second half, there was a noticeable shift in energy. The players looked sharper, hungrier, and more determined to turn things around. And it did not take long for them to make a statement.

Ssozi Derick was the first to strike. The talented forward found space inside the box and finished brilliantly to open Uganda’s scoring. It was exactly the spark the Cubs needed. Suddenly, Uganda had momentum, and the game came to life.

Cameroon, sensing Uganda’s resurgence, tried to slow down the tempo, and resort to long balls but the Cubs were relentless. The midfield began winning more battles, the passing became sharper, and the attack looked dangerous. Then came Bogere James, and with him, a new wave of hope.

The young striker was full of confidence, and when the opportunity came, he made no mistake. He slotted home Uganda’s second goal, cutting the deficit to 3-2. The Cubs were now within touching distance of a comeback that had seemed impossible just 20 minutes earlier. Uganda kept pushing. The pressure paid off again as Bogere grabbed his second goal of the night, completing his brace and bringing Uganda within a single goal of leveling the match. At 4-3, it was now an open game, with both teams fighting fiercely.

As the final whistle approached, the Cubs threw everything forward, searching for the equalizer. They came close on several occasions, but Cameroon held firm, eventually securing a narrow victory.

After the game, head coach Brian Ssenyondo reflected on the performance. Despite the loss, he was full of praise for the team’s spirit and ability to fight back.

“Cameroon is a very strong team—they are muscular, they are physical. The boys got a different test from that of Burkina Faso,” he said.

What stood out for him the most was how his players responded in the second half. “Going into halftime three goals down but fighting back to a 4-3 result shows that we have the character to respond. That is the mentality we need at this stage,” he added.

This was Uganda’s second international friendly match as they prepare for the U17 AFCON, following an earlier clash with Burkina Faso. Ssenyondo emphasized how crucial these warm-up games had been.

“These two friendlies have been important. We can work on the lessons and challenges encountered before we play our first game on Sunday,” he noted.

With the warm-up games done, the Cubs now shift focus to their opening match at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations. Uganda will take on Morocco, the tournament hosts, on Sunday, March 30th at 10:00 PM (Monday, March 31st at 1:00 AM in Uganda).

  • AFCON U17: Pre-Tournament Friendly: Uganda Cubs 2-3 Burkina Faso

AFCON U17: Pre-Tournament Friendly: Uganda Cubs 2-3 Burkina Faso

The Uganda U17 Men’s National Team (Cubs) kicked off their pre-tournament preparations with a spirited performance against Burkina Faso U17 in an international friendly played on Sunday evening at the Ziaida Sports Complex training ground. Despite a determined display, the Cubs fell to a narrow 3-2 defeat, conceding a late goal in stoppage time.

It was a game filled with energy, tactical battles, and moments of brilliance, with both teams using the opportunity to assess their readiness ahead of crucial AFCON tournament. Right from the start, Uganda showed confidence on the ball, stringing together neat passes and pressing high against their West African opponents. Burkina Faso, however, proved equally resilient, showcasing their physicality and quick attacking transitions.

The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Uganda conceded a penalty after a defensive lapse inside the box. Issouf Bara stepped up for Burkina Faso and calmly slotted the ball past the Ugandan goalkeeper, giving his side a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. The Cubs, however, did not lose focus. Instead, they regrouped and continued pushing forward in search of an equalizer.

Their efforts bore fruit in the dying minutes of the first half. A well-worked attacking move saw the ball fall kindly to Ssozi Derick, who made no mistake in burying it into the net in the 45th minute. The goal brought the Cubs level just before the halftime whistle, sending them into the break with renewed confidence.

Coming back for the second half, Uganda started strongly and wasted no time in making their intent clear. Just six minutes after the restart, Bogere James put the Cubs ahead with a well-placed finish in the 51st minute, sending the Ugandan bench into celebration. The goal seemed to shift the momentum in Uganda’s favor, with the boys enjoying more possession and dictating the tempo of the game.

However, Burkina Faso gradually grew back into the match, capitalizing on moments of lapse in Uganda’s defense. In the 78th minute, Alassane Bagayoko found space in the box and fired in the equalizer, bringing the game back to 2-2.

As the match entered its final stages, both teams intensified their efforts, with Uganda pressing for a winning goal while Burkina Faso looked to exploit defensive gaps. Unfortunately for the Cubs, heartbreak struck in stoppage time when Mohamed Sacko scored in the 90+2 minute, sealing a dramatic 3-2 victory for Burkina Faso.

Despite the loss, the Cubs’ head coach Brian Ssenyondo remained optimistic about the team’s performance and development.

“We dominated play, scored a goal in the last minutes of the first half and again in the early minutes of the second half. All goals we conceded were avoidable because they were individual players’ mistakes,” he noted.

He further emphasized the team’s commitment to improving ahead of the main tournament. “We will improve on our game as we move on, so that we attain our goal of World Cup qualification.”

The Cubs will now focus on their next challenge, an international friendly against Cameroon on March 26th, as they continue fine-tuning for the upcoming tournament.

Uganda U17 National Football Team Gears Up for AFCON

It has been seven days since the Uganda U17 National Football Team, The Cubs, arrived at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru for their crucial training camp ahead of the 2025 TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco from 30th March to 19th April.

The team, comprising 37 players, is vying for a spot in the final squad that will represent Uganda on the continental stage.

FUFA has provided the team all the necessary support towards the preparations for the team to realise their dream.

The atmosphere in camp is intense, yet filled with purpose. The young stars, fresh from their triumph in the CECAFA U17 Zonal Qualifiers in 2024, are pushing themselves to the limit.

Every training session is a step closer to their dream of competing at AFCON and securing a ticket to the FIFA U17 World Cup.

The coaching staff, led by head coach Brian Ssenyondo, emphasised the importance of building physical endurance before shifting focus to tactical execution.

On the seventh day in camp, the team put their work to the test in a friendly match against Jinja SSS. The Cubs approached the game with intensity, with sharp movements and a hunger to impress. Kabiito Marvin and Walusimbi Abubakali scored, sealing a 2-0 victory for the Cubs last Saturday at Jinja SSS play ground.

Coach Ssenyondo analysed every pass, tackle and decision, assessing the team’s performance.

‘It is always good to win, but what matters most is how the team plays. The boys performed well, and we are pleased with their progress so far.’ said Ssenyondo.

With the foundation laid, the team is now focusing on fine-tuning the details.

Coach Ssenyondo has lined up two more friendly matches to assess the squad’s reaction to different situations. The upcoming friendly matches will be another opportunity to make necessary adjustments and prepare the boys for what lies ahead.

Uganda is determined to be more than just participants at AFCON; they want to be competitors, contenders and ultimately, World Cup qualifiers.

For the players, the dream is simple: perform well in Morocco and book a ticket to the FIFA U17 World Cup.

Wanyama Simon, a forward who was part of the squad in Uganda’s CECAFA triumph, embodies this determination.

‘Our success in the qualifiers was built on hard work, dedication and teamwork. Now, we need to push even harder because our main goal is to qualify for the World Cup’ noted Wanyama whose eyes were full of determination.

Wanyama (Centre) during a training session

The FUFA Communications Director Ahmed Hussein is happy with the progress of youth football and how much the federation treasures such projects.

‘We know the value of youth football in the development of the game in Uganda.  FUFA has taken major steps to give the game at this level enough support since 2015 with the start of the FUFA Juniors League. It gives FUFA a chance to enter the underage teams into international youth competitions’ noted Hussein

With just a month left until the Cubs step onto the grand stage in Morocco, every moment counts. The coaches are working tirelessly to ensure the team is physically fit, tactically disciplined and mentally strong. The hunger and ambition are evident across the entire squad.

Every training session is filled with urgency-players challenging each other, demanding more from themselves and their teammates. The competition for places is fierce, but there is a shared vision-to make Uganda proud.

  • Cubs Begin Residential Camp Ahead of U17 AFCON 2025

Cubs Begin Residential Camp Ahead of U17 AFCON 2025

The Uganda U17 Boys’ National Team, commonly known as the Cubs, has officially kicked off its preparations for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025. The team entered residential camp on Monday, February 24, 2025, at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru, setting the stage for an intensive training period ahead of the tournament.

Out of the 37 players summoned by Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo, 31 have reported to camp, with six others expected to join in the coming days. The first training session took place on the morning of Tuesday, February 25, 2025, focusing on fitness assessment and tactical orientation. The technical team is carefully monitoring the progress of the players to ensure that the team gels well ahead of the tournament.

Ssenyondo expressed satisfaction with the initial turnout and the attitude of the players. “We are delighted with the commitment shown by the boys so far. The first activities have been mostly about getting them into the rhythm, orientation of players, and assessing fitness levels.” he said.

The Cubs were drawn into what many are calling the “group of death,” alongside hosts Morocco, Tanzania, and Zambia. All three opponents have proven pedigree in youth football, making Uganda’s path to the knockout stage a challenging one. However, Ssenyondo remains optimistic about the team’s chances.

“Our goal remains to qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup, and we believe we have the talent and discipline to achieve that,” he stated.

Uganda’s previous U17 AFCON appearance in 2019 saw them collect 4 points in group stages, sitting third on the table thus bowing out of the campaign and this year, the team is aiming to go even further.

In 2021, the Cubs qualified but tournament was canceled due to the resurgence of the Covid19 pandemic.

Each of these teams presents a unique challenge, and the Cubs must be at their best to advance to the knockout stages. The tactical and physical demands of the tournament will require meticulous preparation, and the technical team will focus on sharpening the team’s strategies and mental strength in the weeks leading up.

  • 2025 AFCON U17: Uganda Drawn in Group A with Hosts Morocco

2025 AFCON U17: Uganda Drawn in Group A with Hosts Morocco

The Final Draw for the TotalEnergies CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 took place on Thursday, February 13, in Cairo, placing Uganda in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Tanzania and Zambia.

The tournament is scheduled to run from March 30 to April 19, 2025.

Reacting about the draw, the Cubs Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo expressed that his boys will be committed despite being placed in what he terms as the group of death.

‘Our target is the World Cup. It is not a draw you would welcome but one you would take. Having the host Morrocco is a hard one’ said Ssenyondo

‘I have not read so much about Zambia but I know they have played AFCON three consecutive times which makes them a tough opponent’ added the CECAFA U17 winning coach.

The draw divided the 16 qualified teams into four groups of four, with Morocco automatically assigned position A1 in Group A as the host nation.

This marks Uganda’s third appearance at the U17 AFCON, having previously qualified for 2019 in Tanzania and then the 2021 edition, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Uganda U17 team ‘Cubs’ secured their spot in this year’s tournament by winning the CECAFA U17 Qualifiers, defeating Tanzania 2-1 in the final held at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo in Kampala.

Uganda receives 2 similar opponents – Zambia and Morrocco like the ones battled in the same tournament in 2021 but was canceled due to COVID 19 pandemic.

This year’s U17 World Cup will be historic, as FIFA has expanded the tournament to 48 teams, with a record 10 African Nations set to participate in the global showcase from November 5-27, 2025, in Qatar.

Here is the full U17 AFCON 2025 Group Stage Draw

Group A: Morocco (hosts), Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia

Group B: Burkina Faso, UNIFFAC1, South Africa, Egypt

Group C: Senegal, The Gambia, Somalia, Tunisia

U17 AFCON Qualifiers: Uganda Cubs to Face Tanzania in Final | CECAFA

The Uganda U17 Boys National Team is set to clash with Tanzania in the CECAFA U17 Championship final following their impressive 4-1 victory over Somalia in the semifinal. The much-anticipated final will take place tomorrow 27th December 2024, 3:30pm, at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo, with both teams aiming to claim the regional title and solidify their dominance ahead of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Coach Brian Ssenyondo’s tactical approach was evident as the team dominated the previous games, capitalizing on their opportunities and maintaining composure under pressure scoring 10 goals in 3 games including a stunning 4-1 victory over Somalia in the semifinal. This performance not only secured Uganda’s place in the final but also guaranteed their qualification for the U17 AFCON, set to take place in Morocco from March 30 to April 19, 2025.

On the other hand, Tanzania delivered an equally commanding performance in their semifinal, defeating South Sudan 4-0.

Speaking ahead of the final, Ssenyondo expressed his confidence in the team:
“We’ve already achieved part of our dream of qualifying for AFCON, so we have no much pressure. Tanzania is a tough opponent, but we are prepared to give our best and fight for the title.”

Both teams have already secured qualification for the U17 AFCON, but the CECAFA title remains a prestigious honour. For Uganda, winning the championship would serve as a statement of intent ahead of the continental competition, regaining it from Somalia who lifted it in the previous edition, further solidifying their (Uganda Cubs) position as a powerhouse in regional youth football.

Uganda will rely on a number of players including goal poacher James Bogere who has so far netted 2 hatricks plus the leadership of captain Richard Okello, who has been instrumental throughout the tournament, despite nursing a minor injury in the last group stage match but managed to play semifinal too.

The Cubs had their last training earlier today at MTN Omondi Stadium Lugogo in preparation to take on Tanzania, hoping for a historic victory that would inspire the next generation of Ugandan footballers.

  • Coach Brian Ssenyondo Confident in Cubs’ Readiness for Semifinal Clash Against Somalia

Coach Brian Ssenyondo Confident in Cubs’ Readiness for Semifinal Clash Against Somalia

As the Uganda U17 Boys National Team, known as the Cubs, prepares for their crucial semifinal match against Somalia on December 24, 2024, at Hamz Stadium Nakivubo, Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo has expressed confidence in his team’s readiness.

Reflecting on their previous encounter in the 2022 CECAFA U-17 Championship, where Uganda was eliminated by Ethiopia in the semifinals after a 1-1 draw and a penalty shootout loss, Ssenyondo emphasized the importance of seizing the current opportunity.

“The feeling is one; we have to win the game tomorrow. It’s a semifinal which comes with two things: a slot in the final and also qualifying for U17 AFCON,” Ssenyondo stated.

The upcoming match holds significant stakes, as the two finalists from the CECAFA zone will secure qualification for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco from March 30 to April 19, 2025.

Acknowledging the challenge posed by the defending champions, Ssenyondo noted, “I know Somalia is motivated by the fact that they won in the previous encounter in Ethiopia, but we know what we have to do.”

In terms of strategy, the coach highlighted the importance of scoring early: “We have to play as well as we did in our last game against Kenya. By scoring that first goal, it comes with much importance and can help seal the game.”

Addressing the notion of revenge, Ssenyondo clarified, “It is not revenge; football is a game of opportunities, and here we are, given another opportunity that we have to seize amidst the game’s toughness.”

The team’s preparations have been thorough, with their final training session held earlier today at MTN Omondi Stadium Lugogo.

Regarding squad fitness, Ssenyondo provided an update on captain Richard Okello, who sustained an injury in the previous match against Kenya: “He is getting better with recovery up to 60 or 70 percent. The medics are yet to update on his status by end of business today, but I believe he will be ready to play maybe part of the game. If he is not ready, we have other players who can step in and give us a performance.”

The Cubs have demonstrated strong form in the tournament, notably with a 5-0 victory over Kenya in the final group stage match last weekend.

As the match approaches, the team remains focused and determined to secure a place in the U17 AFCON, aiming to capitalize on the opportunity to compete on the continental stage.

In the broader context of the tournament, several teams have already qualified for the U17 AFCON, including Egypt, Morocco, Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast.

Uganda U17 Dominate Kenya with a Stunning 5-0 Victory to Book Semifinal Spot

The Uganda U17 Boys National Team delivered a commanding performance at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Saturday afternoon, defeating Kenya 5-0 in a display of clinical finishing and teamwork to secure their place in the semifinals of the 2024 U-17 AFCON CECAFA Qualifiers.

Forward Bogere James was the star of the show, netting a brilliant hat trick with goals in the 18th, 42nd, and 51st minutes to take home the matchday ball and cement his position as the tournament’s top scorer with three goals. Additional goals from Magala Isima Mulala in the 40th minute and Wanyama Simon in the 81st minute completed Uganda’s emphatic victory over their East African rivals.

Uganda started the match with purpose, immediately taking control of possession and dictating the tempo. Bogere opened the scoring in the 18th minute, capitalizing on a penalty kick after a foul on himself. As the half progressed, Uganda’s relentless pressing paid off again in the 40th minute when Magala Isima Mulala unleashed a clinical strike a few inches into the box to double the lead.

Before the halftime whistle, Bogere struck again in the 42nd minute, punishing Kenya for a defensive lapse to make it 3-0. The young Cranes returned for the second half with the same intensity, and Bogere completed his hat trick in the 51st minute.

Kenya struggled to find a response, and Uganda’s defense remained resolute throughout the match. The final nail in Kenya’s coffin came in the 81st minute when Wanyama Simon fired home a sublime finish to seal the victory in style.

After the match, Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo praised his team’s impressive display and highlighted their ability to execute the game plan. “The boys were fantastic today—disciplined, focused, and clinical. Kenya is a physically tough side, but we maintained our composure and played our football. It’s always satisfying to see the team’s hard work pay off with such a performance.”

Looking ahead to the semifinal clash against defending champions Somalia on Tuesday, 24th December, at 4:30 pm, Ssenyondo acknowledged the challenge ahead. “Somalia is a strong team, and we respect them. In the previous edition, they beat us in the semifinals in Ethiopia, so we know the level of competition they bring. We’ll use these two rest days to prepare and ensure we’re ready to give our best.”

Uganda U17 Boys Face Kenya in Group A Finale

The Uganda U17 Boys National Team is bracing for one of the most pivotal matches in their campaign as they take on familiar rivals Kenya in the final Group A encounter of the 2024 U-17 AFCON CECAFA Qualifiers. Scheduled for Saturday, 21st December 2024, at 4 pm at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, this match is set to be a defining moment for both teams as they chase their respective dreams of advancing to the semifinals.

Uganda heads into this encounter with a slight advantage, holding second place in Group A with one point from their opening 1-1 draw against Tanzania who currently tops the table with four points from two matches, while Kenya, having lost their opening game 1-0 to Tanzania, sits at the bottom with no point.

This clash, however, is about more than just the standings. Uganda and Kenya share a fierce football rivalry that has played out across various age groups and competitions over the years. Encounters between these two sides are known for their intensity, passion, and drama. Both teams will undoubtedly draw on that history as they fight for survival in the tournament.

During the pre-match press briefing, Uganda’s Head Coach Brian Ssenyondo reflected on the team’s preparation and mindset ahead of this high-stakes showdown. “The match against Tanzania was tough, but it prepared us for moments like this. We showed character, and now we must build on that. Facing Kenya is always a challenge—they’re strong, physical, and determined. But our boys are ready. They know what’s at stake, and they’re fully committed to the task ahead.”

Ssenyondo also highlighted the broader aspirations of his team. “This isn’t just about making it to the semifinals. This is about representing Uganda on the regional stage and keeping alive our ultimate goal of qualifying for the U-17 World Cup. Kenya will give everything—they have no other choice—but we’ve prepared for every scenario. We respect them as rivals, but we’re confident in our ability to dominate the game and get the result we need.”

Kenya, meanwhile, faces the daunting task of overturning their fortunes. Known for their physicality and tactical discipline, they’ll be determined to avenge the heavy defeat they suffered in 2022 and keep their tournament hopes alive.
