Muhammad Shaban: Renaissance of the Lethal Striker

The date is March 17 2018, and we are in the 46th minute at Lugogo. KCCA FC fans looking restless as Ethiopia’s St George is proving to be a hard nut to crack. After a goalless draw in the first leg, KCCA FC just need any win to write history by becoming the first Ugandan Club to qualify for the CAF Champions League group stages.Muzamir Mutyaba starts a short corner to Mustafa Kizza’s path, and the roving left back whips in a lofty delivery in the crowded box. Muhammad Shaban senses the opportunity and makes his move. The forward rises highest to nick in a glancing header that leaves goalkeeper Robert Odongkara stunned.

The young striker wheels away in celebration as all players join him in the corner amidst wild celebrations from the fans. And KCCA FC holds on to seal a 1-0 win, thanks to Shaban’s goal, to storm the lucrative stage of the Competition. A Ugandan had been beaten between the posts but most importantly Ugandan football and Shaban were moving forward on the continent.

About six months later, after the deal to join Orlando Pirates FC hit a dead end, Shaban secures a deal to join Moroccon giants Raja Casablanca.

Muhammad Shaban during his unveiling at Raja Casablanca.

The move, was expected to be the start of the striker’s journey to more greater things, may be a deal to one of Europe’s top five leagues. The 19-year old had already proved his worth having led the scoring charts for KCCA FC a season back with 18 goals that included hitting four against URA in a 7-2 demolition. The wonder kid from Arua was also the top-scorer at the 2018 COSAFA U20 Championship that included a double against Zambia. But the move to Raja turned out to be one of Shaban’s worst decision. His only goal for Raja was the fifth on the day against Gabon’s Mberi Sportif in a CAF Confederation Cup first leg played at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, where he had seven appearances.

    Muhammad Shaban.

On August 7th 2019, the striker was unveiled by Vipers SC via their website in a story where he appeared having a handshake with club President Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa as a featured image. In a subsequent interview, Shaban whose debut was delayed for a season due to a knee ligament, said that the fans should expect more from him.It took just eight minutes into his debut for Shaban to make his long wait worthwhile as he nodded in a Dissan Galiwango corner against Wakiso Giants FC at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium on December 12 2020. But that proved to be his only goal in a Vipers SC shirt, going on to play just seven more games at the club before he was shown the exit door.

Arua: East or West – Home Is the Best

When everything seemed beyond repair for Shaban, the striker went by the old adage and returned home at Onduparaka FC.He fired blanks in the opening six games of the season against UPDF, Bright Stars FC, Arua Hill SC, BUL FC, Vipers SC and SC Villa, not to mention the other match with Police which he missed due to yellow card accumulations. It was indeed tough for him but he was planning and sharpening his boots for goals. On November 30, he finally got his first. It came against Express FC, in the 8th minute of the game. He showed instincts of a real goal poacher when he arrived in the area to bundle in from close range after Express FC goalkeeper had spilled an initial shot from Emmanuel Oketch. He ran to celebrate in the corner and made a summersault with relief and joy after getting a monkey off his back. The fans had waited for so long. Shaban, started to play with more purpose and drive, and went on to notch 14 more goals in the Uganda Premier League. His tally included a hat-trick against Police FC at Lugogo, three braces against Mbarara City, Busoga United FC and Express FC.And hit single digit goals against SC Villa, URA FC, Gaddafi FC and Tooro United FC.His goals were timely as throughout the most part of the season, Onduparaka FC were on the edge of the abyss but it was not meant to be as a massive show from striker Shaban opened the door for the Caterpillars resuscitation as the striker wreaked havoc on some of the league’s elite defences.

‘First of all I want to thank the Almighty Allah…. starts Shaban in an interview. ‘Secondly I thank the fans of Onduparaka FC, management plus also my managers at the Sepuya Agency of course we have been working with them hand to hand,’ he started before adding, ‘The fans did a good job welcoming me back at Onduparaka FC. My fans have loved me even though things have not been well. They have been with me together with my family motivating me to work harder, promising me that one day God will make things go through.’

Muhammad Shaban attempts to beat Police FC goalkeeper Tom Ikara.

Speaking about the Morocco spell, he explains: ‘There were challenges. What affected me mostly in Morocco was the injury and that is the major reason I had to come back to Uganda to rebuild myself so that I can go elsewhere. I joined Vipers SC when I was still injured then they took me to surgery. I was not feeling fine but you know Vipers SC is a big club that comes with pressure of winning trophies. They could not wait. I had to talk to the club chairman and the club President to release me so that I can go and start afresh. I went home and the people in Arua were also waiting for me to go back to reunite for a new start to work together again. I embraced the return, and started scoring though at first things did not work out well according to plan but I knew I would improve.’ noted Shaban.

Shaban’s targets, just like any other local player, is to become a mainstay on the National team and get bigger deals may be where his parent club can also get some money to buy more players.

The Onduparaka FC forward and captain is part of the Uganda Cranes provisional squad summoned for the forthcoming 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers against Algeria and Niger.

Muhammad Shaban training with the national team.

‘It is everyone’s dream. Every player is working hard to get there and also go abroad. Being called back to the National team makes me a happy player. When a player joins the National team, he needs to work harder to see that he stays there because you are not representing yourself but the Nation.’

Muhammad Shaban shooting while in training with Uganda Cranes.

Shaban says, ‘I am a changed man because when I went to Morocco I had not yet matured, but at least now I am a different Shaban. I have learnt a lot, so any deal which comes through, I will make sure that I do not repeat the mistakes. You know those deals come with a lot of challenges; you become home sick, new food, different weather, but I was not patient enough. The injury frustrated me even though the team wanted me to stay but I had to request for my release to come back home and rebuild myself.’

    Coach Dudu Bosco hails Shaba

Without doubt, Shaban Muhammad and Onduparaka FC Technical Director make a perfect fit. No one else understands Shaban more than Dudu.Dudu engineered Shaban’s return to Onduparaka FC as it was the case with Ceasar Okhuti seasons back.Okhuti had struggled to hit the ground running while playing for Bunamwaya FC (now Vipers SC), and Dudu who was coaching El Nasir (Sudan) then decided to sign the struggling striker.

‘So many people in Arua called and told me Caeser (Okhuti) was facing challenges and needed help. I took the striker to Juba and transformed him. He went on to score 13 goals in 11 games, finishing as the second top scorer. By the time he left Juba, Express FC had already secured his signature and ready to join the red army. He later joined KCCA FC and we know the amount of money they paid him.’

    Muhammad Shaban(middle) celebrates with teammates.

For Dudu, transforming Shaban back to his best, is not by coincidence or luck but rather a strategy. He describes Shaban as a hard working player who wants to win always and has not disappointed him this season.

‘It has not been very easy, the most important thing is that when I started working with the club, I had a meeting one on one with the club chairman and we drew a strategy aimed at helping the players and those key ones who were struggling outside Arua. Shaban was one of such players and this has not happened only to him but even other players elsewhere.’ He recalls.

During preseason, Shaban and Dudu were in Kampala the latter indicates, ‘we made sure we trained well and got someone who was helping us with fitness of the players. The form you saw with the players was not by mistake. We prepared them during preseason.’

‘He came back home, the fans and club welcomed him very well and showed him love. The entire team showered him with love. The Technical team worked with him and the good thing he listened and that was the genesis of his success.’

With Shaban’s contract set to expire, Onduparaka FC wants their prodigal son to stay.

‘We have come up with the decision to discuss about his possible stay for another season at Onduparaka FC because we are planning to do better than next season. Shaban should be part of the team.’

Shaban would be enjoying his off-season but for now National team duty is calling and his fans will be excited seeing him in action. The 2016 Airtel FUFA Player of the year is hoping for the best.

And Sekajja is banking on his experience to secure a place in the final squad before the team flies out to North Africa.

Ibra Sekajja trained with the team on Thursday at Kampala Quality School.

“I thank the coach for giving me this opportunity. But I feel, it has taken long to even be here. I feel so happy and I can’t wait to score goals to help the team win games,” Sekajja said after Thursday’s training.

“For me, I have played in top seven different leagues and all the leagues are different, coaches are different, tactics differ so it has helped (me) to adapt. I don’t think I will find any challenges adapting to the system of the national team coach.”

    Tanzania

Uganda Senior Men’s National Football Team has learnt its opponents for the Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers Cote D’Ivoire 2023.

In the draw held on Tuesday, 19th April 2022, the Uganda Cranes have been pitted in Group F against Algeria, Niger and neighbors Tanzania.

Coach Milutin Sredojevic aka Micho has made assessment of Uganda Cranes opponents ahead of the games that will start in June.

Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin Sredojevic conducting a training session.

The Serbian tactician believes his charges are pooled in one of the toughest groups in the qualifying phase.

“The long wait is finally over. I personally believe we are in a competitive group and one of the strongest groups. Both Niger and Tanzania have had representatives in the group stages of the CAF Club competitions this season while Algeria were winners of Africa Cup of Nations in 2019 and recent winners of the FIFA Arab Cup,” he stated before adding, “Someone would look at Algeria as group favorites but in modern football there are no small teams because gaps in African football have been reduced.”

Micho is aware the three Nations pose different challenges and thus different approaches must be implemented.

Uganda Cranes Head Coach Milutin Sredojevic

“We are facing teams with different approaches including two Francophone countries in Algeria and Niger then CECAFA opponent in Tanzania. Algeria have had disappointments recently not making it out of the group stage at the last Africa Cup of Nations and conceding a late goal to miss out on qualifying for the World Cup. So these Qualifiers will be a chance to redeem themselves,” Micho stated.

“Niger is a team with so many players abroad and very competitive. They have been to three of the last five Africa Cup of Nations editions. So many Ugandans would welcome the chance of playing Tanzania but it is a tricky opponent. They will have two teams in CAF Champions League next season, Simba FC is still doing well in CAF Confederation Cup and they have good players abroad. In the 2019 Qualifiers, we only got one point from Tanzania and therefore we need to respect them.” He added.

Micho who was the helm as Uganda qualified for the 2017 AFCON edition in Gabon therefore calls upon all stakeholders to play their part in aiding the Uganda Cranes to achieving the target of returning to the continental showpiece.

Coach Micho talking to defender Bevis Mugabi.

“I’m calling upon every stakeholder, all the technical people and all of us in FUFA to have good organization and detailed strategic plan on how we shall approach these games. I’m also calling upon the players who are the producers of results that this is the chance to show that you have what it takes to go back to the Africa Cup of Nations.”

The Qualifiers for the 2023 edition that will be hosted in Ivory Coast are expected to get underway in June this year but CAF will release the fixtures and exact dates at a later date.

In the draw held on Tuesday, 19th April 2022, the Uganda Cranes have bern pitted in Group F against Algeria, Niger and neighbours Tanzania.

Algeria have won the coveted title twice with the last coming three years ago in Egypt and this will be the first time Uganda is facing the North African outfit in AFCON Qualifiers since 1999.

For neighbors Tanzania, the most recent competitive engagement came on the road to qualifying for AFCON 2019 where Uganda emerged table leaders in the group that also had Cape Verde and Lesotho.

Midfielder Moses Waiswa (left) had colourful moments on his senior national team debut against Tanzania in 2018.

The most recent encounter against Niger, the other Group F opponent came in 2018 in a friendly match that the West African Nation won 2-1.

Uganda Cranes pip Buganda Masaza Select Team in practice match

Uganda Cranes nicked a hard fought 2-1 win over Buganda Masaza Select Team on Friday in a practice game played at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium,Wakiso.

A goal in either half from Captain of the day Farouk Miya and substitute Sharif Ssaka guided the Cranes to victory.

Farouk Miya vies for the ball against Buganda Masaza Select players.

Buganda Masaza Select Team got their consolation at the start of the second half through Abdallah Ssentongo.

In a closely contested encounter, Uganda Cranes made a cautious approach at the start with the Buganda Masaza Select Team asking questions to the delight of a sizeable crowd that came out to watch the game.

However, it was the National Team that got the first attempt at goal two minutes after kickoff but Martin Kizza fired into the side net.

Joseph Marvin Youngman shields the ball away from his opponent.

On the other hand, Buganda Masaza Select Team made several inroads but lacked the much required calmness to break Uganda Cranes’ backline.

It was Miya who broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when Moses Aliro’s well delivered cross found him unmarked inside the area and he did no mistake to fire home.

Farouk Miya (in white) gave Uganda Cranes the lead.

Hakim Kiwanuka nearly doubled Uganda Cranes lead six minutes later when he beat his man for pace on the left flank but the attempt from outside the box went a few inches off target.

    Hakim Kiwanuka attempts to shoot.

There was another chance for Uganda Cranes before the break off a quick break but Kiwanuka’s cross was too early for Kizza who was arriving at the far post.

At the end of the second half, coach Milutin Sredojevic made changes bringing on a new team.

Denis Otim, Brian Mato, Derrick Ndahiro, Ronald Owing, Steven Namisi, Sabir Andama, Francis Odongo, Emmanuel Mukisa, Clinton Komugisha, Sharif Saaka and Ezra Kaye all came on.

Three minutes upon restart, Ssentongo rose high to node home a well delivered corner kick by Ben Nakibinge’s to level matters.

Substitute Saaka helped Uganda Cranes to regain their lead powering home a header off a perfect cross from Brian Mato.

Uganda Cranes made a forced substitution with goalkeeper Otim brought off after sustaining an injury. He was replaced by Jeans Wokorach.

With 4 minutes to the end of the game, midfielder Francis Odongo was sent off for a second bookable offence but the Cranes held on to win the game.

The coach was impressed with the performance of the team and indicated the Buganda Masaza Select Team gave his charges a good test.

“It was a good test for the team. We faced a team that really put up a spirited fight. There were positives picked and I hope we can keep improving. Some of the players were making their first appearance for the National Team but they showed great character.” He said.

Uganda Cranes will now shift focus to Saturday (tomorrow) where they play another build up game against the Kampala Region Select Team at St. Mbaga Major Seminary.

2022 Navruz cup: Uganda Cranes goes down fighting against Uzbekistan

    Full Time: Uzbekistan 4-2 Uganda

Uganda Cranes on Tuesday afternoon lost 4-2 against hosts Uzbekistan in the 2022 Navruz cup at the Navbahor Stadium in Namangan.

AS Roma striker Eldor Shomurodov bagged a hat trick that gunned down the Cranes despite a spirited fight.

Jaloliddin Masharipov gave Uzbekistan the lead when he scored in an empty net after Herbert Achai miscommunicated with goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi in the 34th minute to send the passionate crown wild.

Four minutes later, Masharipov turned provider when he exchanged with Shomurodov who brilliantly put the ball far beyond Alionzi’s gloves to make it 2-0.

Farouk Miya had a chance to reduce the deficit with a free kick at the stroke of halftime but his effort was well saved by the keeper.

Moments into the second half, Micho introduced Milton Karisa for Fahad Bayo.

Miya scored Uganda’s first goal from a well delivered cross by Karisa in the 52nd minute.

Three minutes later, Shomurodov restored Uzbekistan’s two goal cushion with an easy finish from a well orchestrated counter attack.

The skipper nearly made it three in the similar fashion but his effort kissed the lower post five minutes later.

Micho brought on Bobosi Byaruhanga for Moses Waiswa, Allan Okello for Steven Sserwadda and Aziz Kayondo for Achai.

Derrick Kakooza was also introduced for Marvin Youngman in the 69th minute.

Uganda kept pressing for another goal but it was Uzbekistan who scored next.

Shomurodov got enough space to fire home his third goal and Uzbekistan’s fourth of the day in the 72nd minute.

Emmanuel Okwi scored Uganda’s second goal with a sweet shot from outside the box in the 78th minute but was not enough for the Cranes to avoid defeat.

Rogers Mato the last Uganda substitute as he came on for Allan Kyambadde in the dieing minutes.

“It is a tournament that has really given us a clear picture ahead of the 2023 AFCON Qualifiers and we now know who is ready to compete and not.”

Micho briefly said in the post match press conference.

Uganda finished second while Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan came third and fourth respectively.

The Milutin Sredojevic coached side will also have to negotiate this tie without out injured inspirational midfielder Khalid Aucho who is not in shape (injury) and custodian Charles Lukwago who returned to his Ethiopian based club St. George. Fred Kajoba who handles the goalkeeping department will have to make a choice between Benjamin Ochan and Allionzi Nafian for the starting role between the posts.

The hosts Uzbekistan will put all their hopes in forward skipper Eldor Shomurodov who turns out for Italian giants AS Roma.
Shomurodov was inspirational when Uzbekistan came from a goal down to eject Kyrzstan 3-1 in the semifinal scoring one of the goals.
There will be competition for positions in the Uganda team especially the left back position between Azizi Kayondo and Herbert Achai, right back position occupied by Allan Kyambadde in the last game but UPDF’s James Begisa also stands a chance.
Both sides are using the mini tournament to prepare for the 2023 Asian cup Qualifiers (Uzbekistan) and 2023 Ivory Coast AFCON Qualifiers (Uganda).

  • Bevis Mugabi: The Uganda Cranes and Motherwell intelligent defender

Bevis Mugabi: The Uganda Cranes and Motherwell intelligent defender

The tallest player on the Uganda Cranes team is Bevis Kristofer Kizito Mugabi. He stands at 1.88m and when he lines up in the back line with other players, the chances are, a debate about his height would be ignited. It is the reality with natural stuff more so where the Almighty is the controller.

Mugabi is a Ugandan professional footballer who plies his trade in the Scottish Premier League with Motherwell FC.

Born in Harrow, England, the lanky defender started his football journey at Southampton football academy before joining now fifth division English side Yeovil Town.

After showing interest in representing his mother Country, Uganda, he was summoned for the first time by Uganda Cranes head coach Sebastien Desabre in 2018 and played in two international friendly games against Malawi and Sao Tome and Principe at Namboole stadium.

Bevis Mugabi on his international debut in 2018 at Mandela National Stadium, Nambole

In 2019, he made the final Uganda Cranes team for the AFCON tournament in Egypt and put up a decent show at the right back position.

Bevis Mugabi clears the ball during a friendly match for Uganda Cranes in Abudabhi.

It is such eye catching displays in the famous black yellow and red jersey that landed him a move to Motherwell in 2019 and has since been a main stay in the team with unforgettable shows including breaking a record that had been set by global icon Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bevis Mugabi (2nd from Right) linining up for Uganda Cranes duty

The Motherwell and Uganda defender hit a height of 262cm, beating Ronaldo’s 256cm, and also leapt 75cm off the ground compared to Ronaldo’s 71cm. In 2021, Mugabi netted for his team with a beauty of a header against Ross County. Motherwell won 1-0.

He also recently renewed his stay at the club for another three years.  He is just 26 years old.

FUFA media’s Ronnie Lusulire caught up with the towering and intelligent defender for a question and answer session. He talks about life in Scotland, favorite shirt number, toughest opponent and the kind of music his ears feed on.

Interview time: Bevis Mugabi (L) and Ronnie Lusulire

FUFA media: Why did you decide to renew your contract with Motherwell FC despite offers from other clubs?

Mugabi: I decided to stay with the club because of the loyalty they showed me when I first came to Scotland. First and foremost, they believed in my ability even when I wasn’t playing well and that is the reason why I probably decided to stay and develop further as a player and a person.

But most importantly it was about playing games consistently. I believe I made the right decision to stay at the club.

Training hard has given Bevis Mugabi a chance not to be overlooked by coaches at club and country level.

FUFA media: How did the fans receive you when you joined the Club?

The fans were really welcoming and supported me through alot of things and I am very happy to be staying honestly.

FUFA Media:  The switch from Yeovil to Motherwell in 2019, how did it change your life?

Mugabi: It was a big change moving from England to Scotland.  I left behind my family but I had to grow as a person, adapt to a different environment, culture, people and style of play. It wasn’t a very easy transition but I am happy I made that step with the aim of trying out something different and I can’t complain.

FUFA media: How did you feel breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous 8ft 5 inch leap record?

Mugabi: I honestly didn’t have an idea that I had done it until after the game when my brother called me and said I had jumped high but at that time I wasn’t really focusing on that as my aim was to get 3 points for the team. I am happy it was the winning goal and got the vital points that we needed at that time.

The thumbs up signal is not for breaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s record but winning a game in Uzbekistan

FUFA media: What are your targets now at the club going forward?

Mugabi: My main focus is to perform well for the club and play consistently well for my manager, teammates and finish in a better position on the table. All I can do is to thank God for putting me in this position and allowing me to keep on working and progressing as a player. I feel I have done well this season with my performances and I want to keep on learning as it never stops but hopefully keep on playing well and see what the future has in store for me.

This season, Mugabi has made 25 appearances out of 30 for Motherwell in 2223 minutes with two goals to his name.

FUFA Media: Who is the toughest opponent you have ever faced?

Mugabi: Senegal’s Sadio Mane during the 2019 AFCON tournament in Egypt when we lost 1-0 in the last 16 stage.

FUFA Media: What kind of music do you listen to?

Mugabi: Rap, Hip hop, RnB and Afro beats.

FUFA Media: Who is your roommate in the National team?

    Mugabi: Usually it’s Isaac Muleme.

FUFA Media: What’s your favorite shirt number?

Mugabi: It is 5 and I am happy I wear it while on the National team though at club level it is 16.

2022 Navruz cup: Lukwago cleans up early mistake to drive Cranes to finals

Custodian Charles Lukwago was the hero as Uganda Cranes knocked out Tajikistan 5-4 on penalties following a one all draw in normal time on Friday at Navbahor Stadium to sail through this year’s Navruz cup final.

Uganda started on a bright note breaking the deadlock just seven minutes into the start through skipper Emmanuel Okwi who headed in a Miya Faruku free kick from the left after left back Herbert Achai was fouled.

Make shift right back Allan Kyambadde committed a foul on the far right corner in the 15th minute the resultant free kick was squandered by the opponents.

Four minutes later, Moses Waiswa clever through Ball from the middle of the pack was picked up by Milton Karisa who unselfishly cut back to an unmarked Okwi but the keeper came to the rescue.

In a space of five minutes, Bobosi Byaruhanga had his trademark thunder bolt saved by the Tajikistan goalie after initial brilliant interplay between Karisa and Okwi.

With seven minutes to recess, Lukwago gifted Tajikistan with an equalizer as his clearance of a back pass from Bobosi fell straight to Alisher Djalilov who made no mistake to level matters.

A quarter into the second stanza, Milutin Sredojevic side made a double change introducing Fahad Bayo and Allan Okello for Miya and debutant Marvin Youngman.

Four minutes later, Alisher missed out on grabbing a brace as his shot from distance went inches out for a goal kick.

The 70th minute saw Cranes make other switches withdrawing Waiswa, Karisa and Okwi who gave the armband to Mugabi for. Steven Sserwanda, Martin Kizza and Rogers Mato.

With six minutes to play and Uganda desperate for a later winner, Lativian based forward Derrick Kakooza was introduced for Achai but nothing much was yielded until the final whistle which which meant direct spot kicks.

In the penalties, goalie Lukwago cleaned up his open play mistake saving two Penalties to drive Cranes to the finals.

Allan Kyambadde, Halid Lwaliwa, Derrick Kakooza, Rogers Mato all converted in their kicks respectively while Allan Okello had his effort saved before Bayo came through to seal it.

Milutin Sredojevic believes it was a good test for his side prior to the upcoming Ivory Coast 2023 AFCON Qualifiers.

“It wasn’t easy to play against Tajikistan given their technically gifted players, It is a very good test for us ahead of our upcoming engagements and we shall take the positives and correct the mistakes”- he said in the post match press conference.
